great video and tips on putting back the timing cover: but one thing I saw that needs more explanation is when you put the new timing chain back on, I saw that your TDC dots both facing each other which is cam at 6 o'clock and crank at 12 o'clock which is set at the exhaust stroke ....but when you set your distributor back in , its off 180 degrees.... So when your off the next step is to take of the distributor and go back and set your (TDC to Intake Power stroke) cam at 12 o'clock and same with crank at 12 o'clock and now your distributor will set in at piston one... most video don't explain if what happens when your off 180 degrees on your distributor...
It should be similar depending on your timing chain cover. I know some of the new vortec motors have a different one so I'm not sure if the will work the same way so just a work of caution there. Good luck!
I've had the Chevrolet chrome timing covers and a few sets of chrome valve covers including two sets of Edelbrock chrome script valve covers they don't seal for shit!!! Only way I managed to get the new set of Edelbrock chrome script valve covers I had to seal was victor reinz cork valve cover gaskets sealed to the heads, and the valve covers.
Yeah I don't prefer the stamped steel chrome stuff either, but It kept me from spending any extra money on the project. Pretty excited it sealed up well
Harbor freight sells a 10 piece extractor set for that bolt head you snapped off. If you're really careful, you might be able to drill and spin it out without taking the cover off the engine.
Great job for guys needing info, just curious i never seen u re install the front seal?? Maybe u done it off camera??!! Hope so, u will onow soon enough
my 454 has been making a whining noise on startup, starts quick but won’t stay running, performance has been poor and jerks from first to second shift hard. u guys think this is it?
Excellent job. Thanks for sharing. Let me ask you, did the truck started right before you did this replacement? I am wondering if that chain play messed up the timing somehow?
@@RacerXGarage Sure, There is one link in the timing chain that is black so I was wondering if it goes to a certain spot in the timing process or does it have to be turned toward the engine or away from the engine for a proper fit. I had installed a motor cycle chain once that had to be turned a certain way because other wise it would not ride on the gears correctly because of a slant in the way it was made. And same with a Nissan timing chain the black links had to be in line with the timing marks only there was 3 of them.
So first, good eye! However, that is what this video covers; replacement of the timing chain. Maybe you didn't watch the whole thing, but yup, definitely needed replaced!
@RacerXGarage I thought that you were replacing it with an OEM timing chain. That's what I mean. But I see that you have a double lapped timing chain assembly.
Good Question! at 16:39 I talk about having to move it back because it moved when I was using the pully puller. Most factory small block chevys are not interference motors, so as long as I moved back to the left when I install it will be absolutely fine.

Oil pan still attached, that’s great news , I’ll be taking out the cam on my 4.3 inboard, this is motivating not having to pull the block.

Informative and like the old school trimming part. Thanks thanks I was dreading that that solved it
Awesome, glad to hear!
Bummer on the bolt, but damn chat chain looked worn out! Nice job great video!

I made a tool to press the crank sprocket on. Threaded rod to match the bolt and on the further end two nuts. No more tapping
Oh nice! This one tapped on pretty easy but that sounds like a good idea also!

This truck has moved off to a friend, but I appreciate the insight!
Reverse twist drill bits 70% it spins right out as it warms up and cutting thru releases tension of the threads .
Where did you get that socket to help turn the motor and what is it called exactly
It's called a crankshaft turning socket. I got this one from Amazon
amazing video. you fkn rock,!! you a a hero for me today. I can do this! thanks for spending the time to do his
Thank you! Good luck on your project, glad it provided some insight!
Bravo c'est très bien expliqué
Where can I find that socket with key way? Thanks!
I believe I found this one on amazon, but I don't remember offhand the exact name of the tool. I think maybe search for "Crank socket"
better drill that bolt out if your luck is anything like mine it's gonna leak. how about that black rtv it's really sticks to your fingers, good luck
I full on rolled the dice on it instead of pulling everything back off. So far so good, just got it fired up today 🤘
Great job for guys needing info, just curious i never seen u re install the front seal?? Maybe u done it off camera??!! Hope so, u will onow soon enough
I did install it, but I don't remember if i did it on camera or not. May have left if out by mistake. Thanks for the kind words!
How do you put the harmonic balancer back on?
With a rental tool, i show it in the next video of this series - th-cam.com/video/0b6uU9DkHNE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=fpJkQwE1dxO2yPKI&t=942
Nice job, fine looking truck also.
Appreciate it! Was an awesome little truck, I already want another
Excellent! Very clear...
Thanks, glad it helped!
Hi, did you loosen the front oil pan bolts? Thanks in advance.
I don't believe I did, the most important part is trimming the cover so you don't have to. Good luck!
my 454 has been making a whining noise on startup, starts quick but won’t stay running, performance has been poor and jerks from first to second shift hard. u guys think this is it?
I think its prob worth checking out if a tune-up doesn't help much. My biggest issue was sporadic and inconstant idle
Nice show and would like to see more but on Obs because is what I have but great show.
Thanks! I hope to nab an OBS in the future to work on
Excellent job. Thanks for sharing. Let me ask you, did the truck started right before you did this replacement? I am wondering if that chain play messed up the timing somehow?
Yes, it started and had a very sporadic idle and would eventually stall. Timing chain totally fixed it
what about that black link what is that for?
I'm not sure I follow, can you elaborate?

You're welcome, thanks for watching
Thanks I’m going to do minds now 350
Awesome!
That old chain was about ready to jump a sprocket.
No kiddin! It was so bad!
What pitch is the chain?
Not sure I could tell you that, it is not something I am familiar with.
Is the timing chain a part of the engine or is it separate? For instance....If i buy a new motor is there a timing chain on it?
If you buy a complete motor it should be there but if you buy a block your gonna have to pick one up
Rolando hit it right on the head. It is something that is very necessary and should come on, and be installed on most motors.
@@Officrolly thank you
Have you ever tried a SpeedMaster bouble roller timing chain? Please only real world experience.
I cant say I have tried that brand
Thanks!!
Thank you for watching
Exellent job
Thank you! Appreciate you checking it out!
Thanks.. im inspired
Glad it helped! Good Luck!
Better replace that timing chain assembly while you're at it. I see slack on it.

13:35 the gear moved a bit, is that going to cause issues? It's just a question, I'm trying to learn something

Sweet syclone/typhoon
Thanks! One is a Sonoma GT, the other is a Typhoon
Not a good idea to use an impact for those timing bolts. Otherwise good video.
I had it set to 1 which is like 10ft lbs, but still you're right! Wasn't a great idea
