How to Diagnose & Replace Any Chevy 350 Timing Chain Pt3 Double Roller Timing Chain Install

  • We will continue the timing chain service on a GM 350 by upgrading to a double roller timing chain. After the double roller timing chain installation we will bar the engine over twice so you can hear the compression difference in this hi-performance 350. Every engine we have done a chain too you can hear the compression difference. If the engine has over 200,000 miles doing a timing chain service may make other parts of the engine weak (Head Gaskets, Seals, Gaskets)

    I like to thank you guys I brought a motor off of let go everything checked out good compression I took the valve covers off everything look clean inside the motor so I put it in my truck and I couldn't get it to run right swap carburetors distributors mess with the timing and nothing was working the things backfiring had no power so tomorrow I'm going to take a look at the timing chain thanks again guys keep the videos coming

    When you're heating a torus (donut) like the crank gear, you want to heat it outside-in. Although this gear is too small to really matter, as a general rule you should always heat from the outside-in. If you heat from the inside, it's expanding and fighting against the outside. I am usually heating gears that are 4ft+ in diameter.

    Did you make sure to line up your two dots on the sprockets and I noticed that you didn't mention it. Lol. Thanks...

      We always set our dots up before removing the chain then re-check alignment with a straight edge just before installation.

    It's nice to watch a video with the exact problems you are experiencing. I also did the carb and distributor to no avail. I like the part showing the crank moving and the distributor not. Mine was alot worse than the one y'all were working on. Thanks again for a great series.

    On late model 5.7 engines you have to grind a small portion of the block behind the cam gear to installed a double row chain. If you don’t the cam gear will rub against the front of the block

      The 580, 638 cast blocks do need some clearance provisions, but I haven't had to grind any 397010 blocks for double roller use. That's not to say at some point somebody may have done the grinding already on those older 010 blocks.

    outstanding. would be good to know if you used thread lock on the 3 bolts. thougths? I see the quick note : 'optional'/ if you use... suggestions for type, brand?

    I keep an old electric hot plate for installing various press fit gears in manual transmissions and such.

      The hot plate is the only way to go for precision work like manual transmission gear installation.

    This video saved my ass. In the middle of swapping out the chain was wondering what kind of lube your soaking the chain and gears with or if I could put em on dry

      You can use moly-lube, or simple engine oil. We soak the chain for 24 hr in 10w-30 oil, then add just a little moly-lube after the chain is installed. Change the oil after 500 miles!

      So the nube that I am I probably didn't heat up the crank gear long enough and was lightly tapping it on with a finishing hammer :/ and I missed place a hit and chipped one of the teeth off (most likely when it sat flush). It's on now but I was reading a review about Cloyes timing chains and one said that some guy did the same thing. Said it still works fine with a chipped tooth. Wondering what you recommend in your experience if its worth it right now to get a new gear while its apart than have more trouble down the road. Not sure if the chip fell in the oil pan or on the ground (working on a gravel driveway). Hoping it fell on the ground.

      Yikes, I have seen cam fibrous gears missing teeth and still ran okay. As a Tech I'm going tell you that it really needs all the teeth to work right, Its worth it to correct as needed! The perfect install temp for the crank gear is about 170 degrees to 250 degrees. I use to use the BBQ to heat the crank gear up but the torch is a bit more convenient. We use a big socket to drive the crank gear the rest of the way on so we don't damage any teeth. As far as the chipped piece of metal goes, once and a while we will get some rouge shavings in the engine. In this case we will put a small hi powered magnet on the oil pan near the drain bolt, during the next oil change we will drag that small magnet down to the drain hole and hope that that rouge piece metal followed out. This may take a couple of oil changes, but rest easy knowing that the oil pick up screen is small in design for this very reason. Chevy filters the oil before it makes it to the main bearings. Use the best oil filter you can buy for time being.

    interesting to note: alignment DOTS on the new gears.... does this direction ever change w new parts? ie: dot to dot vs dot TOP and dot TOP? just curious. of course you would mess the rotation while doing - so little chance of messing up. I once did a SUBURU w 2 timing belts - which was a beast.... difficult to not be one tooth off.

    How did u get the oil pan out to clean the block surface and the pan itself. I have a 93 Sierra and its looking like the whole motor needs to be pulled or drop the 4 wheel differential just to get the pan out for a good cleaning and seal for timing cover as well .

      The square body trucks had room to remove the pan with ease. The round body years (88-98) with IFS is a different story. Round Body trucks with IFS we will unbolt the engine mounts at the frame and lift the engine up with a cherry picker just enough to gain the needed access to drop the pan out. There are some GM's out there where you must remove the engine to do an oil pan gasket or drop the front diff out to gain access. As far as cleaning goes we will use lint free Scott's Shop towels and a lot of brake cleaner. Brake cleaner does not leave a residue after its use.

      The crank gear will bottom against the crankshaft. The crank itself has a taper to stop the gear from being driven in to far.

    I have my timeing cove off and there is a little slack on both visible side of time chain should I change it. Out ? ??

      Slack isn't so much an issue from side to side, but you need to check to see if the cam catches back up the crank with each revolution. Both should turn equally at the same time, but when you have slack in the chain you will find the Cam will always catch up to the Crank late, this is the point when the timing chain should be changed. The other issue you will find with a stretched chain is base timing will jump around at least +/- 4 degrees.

    Heating the gear up with a torch will harden and forge it...really dude? C'mon. There is a method and process to hardening steel more than just getting it hot. It is very possible to weaken the temperment of steel by heating it, albeit you likely did NOT weaken it with the amount of heat you appeared to apply to it but you did NOT make the gear harder with your torch I promise you that

    How often do the head gaskets go bad after changing the timing chain?

      It depends if you had weak compression due to a bad chain and all the sudden increase compression after repair it could blow a weak head gasket. I won't do chains on engine with over 200k because it tends to cause other issues.

      Yes always. We line the engine up before we started the tear down. It might appear as we didn't line it up, but we don't remove the old timing gears till the engine is lined back up at 12/12 O'clock. Its a lot easier to get the cam and crank aligned back up with the old chain on then to try to correct the alignment with a new tight chain.

    I have a 87 k20, it hasn’t started we’ve tried everything electrical and it still won’t start now realize the chain is stretched, can the chain being over stretched prevent the truck from starting at all?

      It should start with a stretched chain unless the chain has jumped which is rare but does happen. With chain stretch you would normally have a late start and timing that would jump around which can be seen with a timing light. To test for a stretched chain simply remove the disturber cap not the rotor and rotate the crank, if that chain is stretched you will see it as the rotor will have to catch up after you rotate the crank. I have seen these engines run with as much as 8 degrees of stretch. Have you done a compression test yet?

    is about a 1/16 inch deflection ok in the chain if pushed in hard?

      All chains will have some deflection. What your looking for is how long it takes for the cam to catch up to the crank. You can test the chain by simply turning the Crank by hand to see if the Cam moves in sync or is delayed by 4 to 12 degrees. If the chain is bad you will see it expand and catch up (excessive deflection) with each rotation by hand. Other issues you may find with a stretched chain are late cold/hot starts, poor performance at times, and timing that jumps around at idle with a timing light.

    Hey guys pls tell what I'm doing wrong I changed the þiminf chain and sprockets and I still have alot of sloppy in the chain after all said and done an I doing some thing wrong ?????????? Pls help lol yours truly poncho

      What your looking for is the crank / cam correlation. When the chain is sloppy it will take 4-12 degrees of crank turn before the cam moves. If your crank and cam move at the same time the chain is not sloppy, most new chains will have some inward side to side movement.

      @@rickmantha9579 Where did you buy your chain from? (Double roller, Single Link) The problem we run into with after market parts no two are alike. We try to use Cloyes but I don't remember if they are still making double roller chains for 350 anymore.

      I have done a bunch of chains and this one is par for the course. Unfortunately dependent on the after market chain you use some are just tighter then others.
