    Hi Chaps! To answer some of your questions...
    1) I left it at 10 MP as this is the phones default setting, has the best stabilization and you can zoom in (you can't when in 40 MP mode), it also uses 'light fusion' aka supersampling to combine 4 MP into 1 in the default 10 MP mode. But it's good to have the option of 40MP if you prefer the look of those photos.
    2) both phones are left in Auto mode (most people use it this way), but the P20's fancy AI will auto adapt camera settings to the scene, e.g the Eiffel Tower pic is shot in auto mode, but it automatically switched to Night mode (for long exposure) and that's the pic you see in this vid @4:12
    3) all P20 selfies were shot at default 24 MP (not 12, i wrote that incorrectly) Cheers! 😊

    Wow! The difference is huge.
    P20 PRO: much better at night, great natural colours & sharper vision.
    S9+: fantastic stabilization in video & good selfie camera.
    Why P20 PRO so shaky and with bad selfie mode and awful shaky mess videos?
    Why S9+ makes colours so rubbish - too light and grey?
    SUMMARIZING:
    P20 PRO: +colours +night +-sharp vision -selfie -video on the move
    S9+: +selfie +stabilization in video -night -colours (too light, grey, unnatural)
    Hard to choose, especially taking into account much better baterry in P20 PRO.

      tbh he just used the auto mode and for the beauty effect he didn't desactivate it but put it to 0
      If you use the manual mode on the P20 you can get pictures even better in the day... same for 1080p you wouldn't get over sharpening

      1080p is great for social sharing, I agree on that but for the rest I'd always prefer 4k. Also, you always have an option to downgrade from 4k to 1080p(that's what I often do). Being able to shoot stable 4K 60fps on mobile is amazing (S9 and iPhone X takes this one for me).

    Also I've gotta say..I understand the low light capability of the S9 is impressive... however sometimes a dark image should be dark...you don't want a nighttime shot to look like it was taken in broad daylight. The Pixel is the perfect example..it exposes things well while keeping great contrast in the dark areas.

    • @fightnight14
      @fightnight14 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah the only problem of the Pixel 2 is the grain in low light other than that it's nearly perfect. If Google improves that by adding a second or third lens on the Pixel 3 for a bigger aperture and better zoom and bokeh then that would be the best camera phone to date

      Maybe i'm the minority here, i just find S9's pictures really good as well. It's not as pleasing at first look, but when you look a little longer the S9's pictures looks a lot more pleasant, very less processing and looks like it's a pic taken from the camera and you gets the image as it is, while the P20's pics looks great, it still looks very aggressively software processed. in low light too, the colors looked a lot more pleasant on the S9. But i can completely understand if someone prefer P20's pictures more though.

    honestly the s9+ for me is slight doing better overall. Like you said for instance in that last shot it shows how sharp it is being made, I don't like that.... But the s9 can be to soft!
    and that 4k video on the p20 is really horrible... That XIaomi Mi A1 is just as stable for a way lesser price.
    not sure why they removed the OIS in the first place tho...
    Either way great video!
    p.s 960fps yeah s9 for me the clear winner, not great on both (duh) but s9 much clearer en less exposure problems.

    @andyH_England 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    For photos clear winner is the p20p as it is great with moving objects where as the s9p blurs those. The rest of the issues can be sorted in post production where as a blurry picture is not helpful.
    Video and clear winner s9p unless you shoot in 1080p and most of us do that, but if you need 4K then the s9p wins.
    Selfie, well I simply don’t care who is the best as I think that craze passed me by.
    Winner is subjective, for me the p20p as I mainly take photos and when I do videos I do 1080p. However the s9p would be great for most usage patterns. We are very lucky to have such great smart phone cameras so win win.

    • @andyH_England
      @andyH_England 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jonathan Weiss I think the 5 x optical zoom is a great addition, the monochrome camera is fantastic and low light it kills the s9. Use the pro mode if you are worried about other stuff or if you are a pro then post production can sort those. You cannot do much with poor low light photos . As for video, 4K is still hardly used by anyone other than pros, it just eats too much space and to the average person isn’t much use. 1080p stable video is fine on the p20p and that is the default video mode on every smart phone. You have to be a real Samsung fan to make that statement and in any case I would easy choose the pixel 2 over the Samsung. The s9p is a very good camera, no doubt, but it is beaten by the p20p in stuff that matters, I know very few that care about selfies or 4K video! Of course if you are a selfie type of guy then the s9 could work better for you!

    Great comparison video, I only wished you had mentioned the B&W mode which is very good on the P20 Pro since it has a dedicated lens for it. I've taken B&W night shots in the rain with my P20 Pro and the results were jaw dropping coming from a phone and so much better than those from my Canon DSLR. I have some amazing colour shots taken in Paris inside Notre Dame cathedral, there again the tricky light condition was much better handled and balanced using the P20 night mode than the same shots on my Canon 24MP DSLR. I'm not a fan of the Auto Ai mode of the P20 Pro and when it is disabled it produces images that are not as sharp and therefore giving an overall natural look. I own both the P20 Pro and S9+ and I definitely prefer the overall camera package from the P20 Pro albeit some minor adjustment in the settings. For straight out of the box images and selfies the S9+ might be the best choice but for keen photographers the P20 Pro is the way to go. Thanks for an excellent video :-)

    It's pretty obvious that the P20 is the better camera. The Huskie picture proved that. The S9 Plus was a smooth mess with colours that were way off and it clearly couldn't handle the moving object very well. That is the most everyday scenario you shot, and the P20 was a champ. To say overall you prefer the S9 - well you must love your selfies! If that's your thing then... well that's your thing!

      @markbarton3233 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mohammed Yaseen “denoising”? Is this a technical term lol. We’re all entitled to our own opinion. For me, the P20 camera takes better images and gives you the choice to avoid the ‘sharpening’ by shooting in 40 megapixels. Also, to my eyes all of the P20 photos came out better particularly the huskies photo which is the most real world shot he took. The Samsung did a terrible job of it so I just found it amusing he preferred the S9 when the P20’s camera is technically more capable and often shoots better photos. But like I say for selfies the S9 is better so if that’s your bag then great.

    Hi Chap, couple questions about the slomo effect, the s9+ only have super slomo option? what if i want it slower than 960 fps? also once you recorded the video, later in the editing you cannot choose where the slomo effect will be, am i right?

      Jimmy Yao what the guy is saying is, all the shots in this video are made in auto mode, to keep the test fair and accurate, even s9 plus and other phones out there have a night mode or similar function in pro mode, but this video is all about raw image quality, all shot in auto mode, hence why he didn't use any of the other modes, plus honestly, a 4s shutter time sucks, it's good for taking stills, but otherwise, in normal use, no one likes to wait that much

      He said he uses auto mode only. If he starts using different modes the test would be not accurate anymore. You also have night mode on the S9+ and you can download a lot more modes from the store too, so that doesn't matter in testing the raw photo quality.

    Nice test. They are both great cameras that are very similar when pixel peeping shots they can both take. However the P20 wins for still photo's because of what it can do that the s9 cannot. A dedicated B&W sensor that offers nice detail (not the same as B&W effect), much bigger main camera sensor size for nicer natural bokeh, 3x optical zoom and 5x hybrid zoom that actually works very well. The night mode of the P20 (not tested here) completely blows away any other phone for night shots at the moment too.
    I have used both phones and the P20 is more fun for photography, it gets you thinking more creatively because of its flexibility.

      Ativ book it is just a lab test to see how well cameras perform. Key word being “lab test”. And while they tell us a lot about a camera the average DXO mark score may not be what you are searching for cause it has got like, 10 categories. Field test like this are much better imo.
      Look at the original pixel camera for example, i would gladly choose that over any newer samsung flagships because i think the colors are better.

    It's crazy how far smartphone cameras have come!!
    There are stark differences between the image quality between the two phones, like how can someone tell which image looks more real. They both produce great pics, but the pics of the Eiffel tower at night shows us how the same pic looks different on both smartphone, so how can someone tell which phone produces the more true to the life picture without having seen it in real life. I hope this makes sense lol.

  • @gregsimpson621

    Excellent and informative review! At my age, I'm not into selfies. Actually, I'm not into videos even. Samsung seems to always win in regards to videos so I often wonder why more Companies don't utilize the stabilization feature more. The photos all come down to personal preference. I like DSLR cameras and that's what I use. I enjoy my state of the art MSI gaming laptop. I like my SHIELD tablet for Android gaming. My Asus Flip C302C chromebook. I just want a great cellphone too. It just has to have the 845 processor. But that's just me. People, or at least one, says your bias. I think your one of the few who isn't biased but rather just lays it all out there and asks the viewers to decide. Thanks!!!

    if you notice in some pictures the time taken is different.
    For example, 04.10 on the right there is a straight line with light on S9 and P20 is off and the same goes with some buildings on the left the lights on S9 are on and P20 are off..so its not the same time..and i doubt it's a coincidence. I dont say that's a fake video or you lie or something like that..but clearly there are some differences

    • @hollymolly518
      @hollymolly518 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      it's fusing 4 pixels into 1pixel for more detail it's software that some phone use like one plus 5t use this too in low light shot
      you can't zoom in in 40mp and no stabilization, also 40mp will take up 4x space ...

    • @Tigerex966
      @Tigerex966 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks for the ifo, i thought the 40mp shots were from a 40mp sensor and not from mere software algorhytm tricks like panasonic and other use on their cameras.
      same question here the 40mp look the best by far, you dont need zoom with 40mp you can zoom in later with that much data and look better than 2x zoom, everyone wanted to see the 40mp vs samsung 12mp.
      storage might be a concern as you say if the p20 does not have a sd card slot?>
      video goes to the s9 no doubt.

    • @hollymolly518
      @hollymolly518 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      high megapixel can crop in farther and can work like telephoto lens, a 4k screen= about 8mp only
      anything higher than that you won't see the different unless you crop in, the different you're seeing is the quality of each pixel....technically fusing 4 pixel to 1 should be better, which is a heavy processing....but there's a lot need to take into consider, it's just not as simple as that..and there's also preference, everyone just have different taste of a good picture...

      was thinking same bro. I am have seen selfie of p20 pro from other youtubers and it looks nothing like he has posted. The ones in this video looks ugly as hell. Not a fair comparison in this video. P20 pro's front facing camera is 24 MP and he is shooting in 12 MP. Plus he is comparing p20 pro's 10 MP photos against s9+ 12 MP pics. Do I trust professional DXOMark or this biased amateur youtuber? One last thing, if P20 pro is adjusted to right settings and not just auto, then see how good the images look as posted by other youtubers.
