I own this phone. The camera comments from MKBHD here are not completely accurate. He is talking about 10mp auto shots. 40mp shots from this phone are insanely amazing. No over sharpening etc... I think this camera deserevs a more comprehensive review. It's the best camera I have ever used. Photos need editing and post processing yes but after you twick them they are the best and years ahead of other smart phone cameras.
Love your channel but you did forget some very important things. 1. 40 mp raw The 10mp files are ok but it's way too much on the sharpening. When you use the 40mp raw option you will be blown away. With the 40mp you can also use noise reduction afterwards. 2. Nightmode is not mentioned This is a magic mode. 4 seconds exposure without tripod that turn out loads of details and Dynamics 3. You can disable ai (which I do) 4. Huawei share Make the phone appear as a network share for easy transport between phone Mac and PC. 5. You can set the camera up for double press the volume button to just start up the camera without taking the shot. So you're in the camera mode within 0.3 seconds ready to take the shot 6. 1080p video is the smoothest I ever saw from any phone. 4k is.... Well not garbage but it's not good if you need stabilization indeed. 7. Would be nice to mention the supercharge option which can recharge the battery really fast. Much faster than my iPhone and note 8 ever did. And taking into account the battery is a lot larger. No review can be complete but I think for cameras these are very important. Don't see it as critique btw. Just adding my thoughts ;)
I totally agree, in addition the camera is really excellent. When you shoot with low light condition you have to go manual if you are a professional, and I can ensure that Huawei P20 Pro captures every detail and is far above all the other cameras I tried. Unfortunately they did not put stabilization in 4K.

Its just unfortunate that the hyper aggressive processing creates such uneven images. I wanted the P20 as a backup camera to take on the trail but found the majority of shots unusable without editing.

It's in the UK. I just bought one at Vodafone and they are deffo trying to push these models. I don't blame them it's nearly half the price monthly. It's an amazing phone I love mine. I came into the store looking for a Galaxy and even though it would make them more money they recommended this phone. When I asked the origin, they said it's a Chinese company basically trying to enter the market quickly. I welcome this lol. Apple is overated.

What they can't just take is the software and the Apple designed chip. That's understandable. Chinese users still generally regard Apple as a sign of 'premium' social status, similar to numerous MacBook users at university.
You should have talked about the "night mode" which allows long exposure without a tripod. I think this function alone puts p20 in a league of its own as No other flagships can capture this much light in total darkness

With Marques being such a fan of videography, I'm surprised he never reviewed the *LGV30.* Not just because of the 2nd camera being wide angle (much more useful than telephoto), but because it records in Log format. To my knowledge I don't think any other phone has that feature. With that kind of raw control I thought he would love it.
Thoughts: --The chipset is better than last year's snapdragon 835 - worth mentioning --The "Smart Screenshot feature" which you "disabled" (but thought it didn't turn off still) is actually a quick app launch or split screen feature which can both be disabled in Settings-Smartassistance-motioncontrol --You can choose to take pictures in 40 megapixels. --Ultra snapshot feature can be changed to only open the camera app and not take a photo immediately. --For low light pictures you did not use or even mention the (yes, AI-powered) Night Mode which is pretty incredible.
Huawei and other Chinese phone companies like to screw with other launchers. Nova isn't technically compatible with miui or emui, they want you to use their bulit in launcher, even though emui sucks.
EMUI does look pretty good - it's come a long way but imho it's better than "even" Samsung's OS now in terms of looks and definitely in terms of speed and longevity. Stock Android does look the best but lacks a few features.

Did you really say "it is u.s site"? Do you understand what the internet is? A lot of American sites and services have more traffic in other countries (especially compared to the population of said countries) and a large margin of his viewers aren't from there, certainly a lot from Asia.
marques, can you please look more into the cameramodes and talk about them. Not talking about 30s shutter options and iso settings in pro mode or mentioning nighmode is something you really really missed out on in my opinion. I'm using these modes during night and well not a single phone in the next 12 months will come close to what these modes can output very very easily. cheers!!

I absolutely adore this phone. By far the best phone I've ever owned. Night mode on the camera is absolutely insane. The video at 60fps is so, so smooth. The front camera is fantastic. The speakers are good and basey and have Dolby sound. Screen is amazing. Just a wonderful phone.

I owned one, the camera is amazing when you play around with the setting, in auto point and shoot, it's a hit and miss. But currently there is a lot of problem with the software, hopefully the next update can fixed that.
Hi Marques. Cool video, it really is a shame that you cant buy the phone in the US. You should try the Night Mode, it really is something amazing that no other phone can even come close and blows away any other photo taken at night without tripod. Keep up the awesome videos man ;)

I am on my second Huawei Phone also bought my wife a Huawei tablet (much better than the Samsung one she had before). Great value, great quality machine. I only have the P9 lite, but still think it's a great machine and in blue it looks awesome.
The Camera of P20 is still better than that of Pixel, Marques focused on fewer details of this phone and its abit disappointing given other reviews he does. People looking for a full review of Huawei phones should look somewhere else! MKBHD is abit biased on huawei phones though he is one of my best reviewers
He compared the P20 night photo with the Pixel 2 night photo, both of them were taken in auto mode. If you want to use the night mode for the P20, you gotta use Pixel 2’s HDR+ enhanced mode to make an even comparison. I can bet that pixel 2 will win by a large margin!

No mention of the incredible night mode and so much criticism towards AI which is just an option. Also, no mention of their battery charging which is pretty darn good considering massive size of the battery. And yes, the UI can make you remind of the Samsung skins but EMUI is super fast even after months of use which is very unlike Samsung's. Just my observations. But yeah, you are the man..!

theBusterben Um yeah... I think everyone knows that the branding doesn't have any functional uses. The point is that in my opinion, and the opinion of many others, the way the branding is presented gives the back of the phone a unique aesthetical appeal to it. Like the fonts they used and the way they alligned it horizontally, just looks very elegant and artistic. Personally, I found when MKBHD removed all the branding the back looked oddly empty and plain. The text overall gives a professional and elegant vibe too it, not to mention that it's placed very neatly.
This is probably the best phone i've ever owned, in terms of what it delivered in comparison to what came before or what else was available on android at the time. Things have moved on a bit but honestly the camera probably still holds up today
Actually, there is in screen fingerprint which covers half of the screen. They could've done that, but I guess it's only patented for vivo. Maybe in future they'll have one. Ps: lookup vivo apex, it's a phone without any bezels.
Kirin970 has NPU, which optimizes the performance of the phone over time, will store your biometric data and not share it with government, translates language and so on. The display is RGBW which is not addressed. The chipset has download and upload speeds way higher than any chipset. Huawei chose not to do OIS in 4K recording(not chipset's fault, don't know why people want to do 4K recording and eat up space). And its a liitle cheaper than S9+, Pixel2XL and a boring IphoneX(who is following android's trends and doing nothing special). P20 is still not perfect, but it is the best in town. Period.

I would buy this phone because of the camera. The pictures look amazing almost as good as a professional camera. I first heard about this phone when I've seen some photos taken by a professional photographer and I really could't believe that they were taken with a phone. Today, I've seen another person who posted some pictures on FB and I know she has an iPhone but these pictures she posted today looked so good I wanted to ask her what camera she used.... until I got to the last one who had the phone logo on the bottom of the picture. AMAZING PHOTOS WITHOUT A DOUBT! I wish they offered this phone in the U.S. too. I did find the international model on ebay but I'm reluctant to buy it not knowing if it will really work ok with tmobile. I'm not crazy about the no SD card and non removable battery but for a great camera in a phone, I'm willing to overlook that. Great review, thanks!
Not a chance. The sensor is far too small and the lens nowhere near the quality needed to match a "professional camera". A consumer DSLR with a kit lens is not "professional". A $2000+ body with $2000+ (or sometimes far more) lenses is "professional", and no phone will EVER match that kind of quality.
The main difference with TouchWiz and EMUI is that EMUI is optimized so much better from my experience. One problem with EMUI though is that some app compatibility is non-existant. Meaning that some apps will not even work on EMUI.

arkan qorban What a liar. Pixel 2 still has a better camera except during low-light situations. A proof is that I tried using my friends P20 against my 2nd gen Pixel (sold my 1st gen pixel and added more bucks). When zooming in, pixel 2 has much, more detail, and it feels so good and doesn't have those small parts of grains in my friend's P20. But, when it came to the low-light shots, his P20 was a bit better.
Pepe has Bleach yes you are correct, and Huawei has 3amazing cameras and less bezels. But if you buy pixel 2, none of it will matter coz it's actually the beeeest, haha. Single camera at its best, fast stock Android, pretty basic but functionality wise, it's worth it's price. Need i explain more? Just see how mkbhd goes back to pixel 2 everryyshingle time. Trip Murphy that's true. But there is barely anywhere to go from here. He has bassically hit the edge of video quality (diminishing returns and what not). Buying the robot arm has the potential to really elevate his videos.
Ivve had a P20 Pro for the past 4 months and I totally love it. The more I use it, the more I like it. I'm a Note addict, so yes, I pre-ordered the Note 9 and sold Mt Note 8, but I enjoy the P20 Pro very much.
So nothing about handheld night mode,three different focus mode,or shooting with only 40mp? I think the camera technology in this phone is one generation ahead of the others,there is so much thing going on... And RAW photos quality is much better than the competition
Very awesome video but you missed one of the best features of the camera: AIS (AI Image Stabilization) which will allow you to take a 6 second handheld exposure for in low light which will drastically improve image quality. (Oh and also you can select to shoot 40MP photos instead of 10MP if you want that)

As a Chinese, Normally I should be proud to see all the spotlight on a Chinese brand, it is actually a decent phone to be honest but I've also been disgusted by the company. Their marketing strategy which deliberately try to link buying an Huawei phone to patriotism and they refuse to apologize or make compensations after been exposed for false advertising of mixing slower memory chips in P10. But they do put a lot of investment in Chinese media, manipulating public opinions. I would choose an Xiaomi phone over Huawei, the publicity of this company is just degrading.

I feel MKBHD reviews are becoming more of a gimmick....It been more than a month P20 had been launched...Firstly..This is such a late review..I watched a lot of great reviews..about P20....MKBHD is not even going to details....The low light performance of P20 is unimaginable...It has got a night mode...which will take a long exposure shot...takes little more time...but gives details in dark even naked eye cannot see...Saw it in another review...MKBHD didn't even mention it...Also the 10x hybrid zoom...The best ever zoom possible in a smartphone...He just didn't even know it is there....The variety of modes the P20 offers...In good daylights ...pixel 2 Xl will give a natural looking image...but P20 is a photographers camera...the large number of options and control..A single P20 can give different images as we want...MKBHD reviews are becoming more of personal opinions..not even going to depths and beauty of technology...

With Marques being such a fan of videography, I'm surprised he never reviewed the *LGV30.* Not just because of the 2nd camera being wide angle (much more useful than telephoto), but because it records in Log format. To my knowledge I don't think any other phone has that feature. With that kind of raw control I thought he would love it.

--The chipset is better than last year's snapdragon 835 - worth mentioning
--The "Smart Screenshot feature" which you "disabled" (but thought it didn't turn off still) is actually a quick app launch or split screen feature which can both be disabled in Settings-Smartassistance-motioncontrol
--You can choose to take pictures in 40 megapixels.
--Ultra snapshot feature can be changed to only open the camera app and not take a photo immediately.
--For low light pictures you did not use or even mention the (yes, AI-powered) Night Mode which is pretty incredible.

Huawei and other Chinese phone companies like to screw with other launchers. Nova isn't technically compatible with miui or emui, they want you to use their bulit in launcher, even though emui sucks.
Have you looked at those themes? More of a gimmick if you ask me...
EMUI does look pretty good - it's come a long way but imho it's better than "even" Samsung's OS now in terms of looks and definitely in terms of speed and longevity. Stock Android does look the best but lacks a few features.

marques, can you please look more into the cameramodes and talk about them. Not talking about 30s shutter options and iso settings in pro mode or mentioning nighmode is something you really really missed out on in my opinion. I'm using these modes during night and well not a single phone in the next 12 months will come close to what these modes can output very very easily. cheers!!

I absolutely adore this phone. By far the best phone I've ever owned. Night mode on the camera is absolutely insane. The video at 60fps is so, so smooth. The front camera is fantastic. The speakers are good and basey and have Dolby sound. Screen is amazing.

I owned one, the camera is amazing when you play around with the setting, in auto point and shoot, it's a hit and miss. But currently there is a lot of problem with the software, hopefully the next update can fixed that.

I am on my second Huawei Phone also bought my wife a Huawei tablet (much better than the Samsung one she had before). Great value, great quality machine. I only have the P9 lite, but still think it's a great machine and in blue it looks awesome.
The Camera of P20 is still better than that of Pixel, Marques focused on fewer details of this phone and its abit disappointing given other reviews he does. People looking for a full review of Huawei phones should look somewhere else! MKBHD is abit biased on huawei phones though he is one of my best reviewers

He compared the P20 night photo with the Pixel 2 night photo, both of them were taken in auto mode. If you want to use the night mode for the P20, you gotta use Pixel 2’s HDR+ enhanced mode to make an even comparison. I can bet that pixel 2 will win by a large margin!

theBusterben Um yeah... I think everyone knows that the branding doesn't have any functional uses. The point is that in my opinion, and the opinion of many others, the way the branding is presented gives the back of the phone a unique aesthetical appeal to it. Like the fonts they used and the way they alligned it horizontally, just looks very elegant and artistic. Personally, I found when MKBHD removed all the branding the back looked oddly empty and plain. The text overall gives a professional and elegant vibe too it, not to mention that it's placed very neatly.
This is probably the best phone i've ever owned, in terms of what it delivered in comparison to what came before or what else was available on android at the time. Things have moved on a bit but honestly the camera probably still holds up today

Cos the botton of Huawei in the front not just the finger print or home button, it also has a lot of extra functions. You need to try it on your own.
Actually, there is in screen fingerprint which covers half of the screen. They could've done that, but I guess it's only patented for vivo. Maybe in future they'll have one.

not Dominic Normal P series and P Pro series phones always had a home button on the front. Only P Lite series phones have back fingerprint scanners.
Kirin970 has NPU, which optimizes the performance of the phone over time, will store your biometric data and not share it with government, translates language and so on. The display is RGBW which is not addressed. The chipset has download and upload speeds way higher than any chipset. Huawei chose not to do OIS in 4K recording(not chipset's fault, don't know why people want to do 4K recording and eat up space). And its a liitle cheaper than S9+, Pixel2XL and a boring IphoneX(who is following android's trends and doing nothing special). P20 is still not perfect, but it is the best in town. Period.

I would buy this phone because of the camera. The pictures look amazing almost as good as a professional camera. I first heard about this phone when I've seen some photos taken by a professional photographer and I really could't believe that they were taken with a phone. Today, I've seen another person who posted some pictures on FB and I know she has an iPhone but these pictures she posted today looked so good I wanted to ask her what camera she used.... until I got to the last one who had the phone logo on the bottom of the picture. AMAZING PHOTOS WITHOUT A DOUBT! I wish they offered this phone in the U.S. too. I did find the international model on ebay but I'm reluctant to buy it not knowing if it will really work ok with tmobile. I'm not crazy about the no SD card and non removable battery but for a great camera in a phone, I'm willing to overlook that. Great review, thanks!
Not a chance. The sensor is far too small and the lens nowhere near the quality needed to match a "professional camera". A consumer DSLR with a kit lens is not "professional". A $2000+ body with $2000+ (or sometimes far more) lenses is "professional", and no phone will EVER match that kind of quality.

The main difference with TouchWiz and EMUI is that EMUI is optimized so much better from my experience. One problem with EMUI though is that some app compatibility is non-existant. Meaning that some apps will not even work on EMUI.

A proof is that I tried using my friends P20 against my 2nd gen Pixel (sold my 1st gen pixel and added more bucks). When zooming in, pixel 2 has much, more detail, and it feels so good and doesn't have those small parts of grains in my friend's P20. But, when it came to the low-light shots, his P20 was a bit better.

Very awesome video but you missed one of the best features of the camera: AIS (AI Image Stabilization) which will allow you to take a 6 second handheld exposure for in low light which will drastically improve image quality.
(Oh and also you can select to shoot 40MP photos instead of 10MP if you want that)

As a Chinese, Normally I should be proud to see all the spotlight on a Chinese brand, it is actually a decent phone to be honest but I've also been disgusted by the company. Their marketing strategy which deliberately try to link buying an Huawei phone to patriotism and they refuse to apologize or make compensations after been exposed for false advertising of mixing slower memory chips in P10. But they do put a lot of investment in Chinese media, manipulating public opinions. I would choose an Xiaomi phone over Huawei, the publicity of this company is just degrading.

I feel MKBHD reviews are becoming more of a gimmick....It been more than a month P20 had been launched...Firstly..This is such a late review..I watched a lot of great reviews..about P20....MKBHD is not even going to details....The low light performance of P20 is unimaginable...It has got a night mode...which will take a long exposure shot...takes little more time...but gives details in dark even naked eye cannot see...Saw it in another review...MKBHD didn't even mention it...Also the 10x hybrid zoom...The best ever zoom possible in a smartphone...He just didn't even know it is there....The variety of modes the P20 offers...In good daylights ...pixel 2 Xl will give a natural looking image...but P20 is a photographers camera...the large number of options and control..A single P20 can give different images as we want...MKBHD reviews are becoming more of personal opinions..not even going to depths and beauty of technology...
