My copies of Overlord and The Ruins came in. Haven't watched Overlords yet, but did watch The Ruins at a friend's house last night who's big into horror movies, and she liked it quiet a bit, so big thank you on her behalf.
As an Indian, thanks for covering these movies Cecil. I would recommend Bramayugam (2023) and Bhoothakaalam (2022). both are excellent psychological horror movies.
Thanks for the list, Cecil. I haven't seen many Bollywood films, so it's nice to have a list to work from. I remember seeing a "Bollywood slasher" that was 2 hours and 40 minutes long. I think it was a TV mini-series edited down. I swear you could have cut 90 minutes, and it wouldn't have affected the plot or kill count.
About 15 years ago when I first was getting into Bollywood, I was working with a girl from there who explained it to me. Essentially (this is the super short version) couples in India don't go to the movies often, so when they do they want a full experience. This is why the movies usually have these lavish dance numbers and a big run time. Its a cultural thing where they want the longer productions, while outside of there audiences want tighter edits and aren't super big with musicals. Some of them are so good that they cross the cultural boundries and become hits outside of there but its not the norm. (and it shouldn't be) One of the things I like about Bollywood films is they are trying to please their audience first and foremost. I think too many American films suffer because they try to please everyone and end up pleasing no one.
@@GoodBadFlicks Thanks for the recap, Cecil. I agree that trying to make films that appeal to everyone on the planet usually doesn't work. Bollywood is its own culturally unique thing and that is what makes it special.
Thank you for showcasing these Bollywood gems for those of us who've not seen them and/or only have a small familiarity with Bollywood/Indian flicks! I have yet to see any horror from Bollywood. Only stuff I've seen is more of the action flicks like Singham and Sooryavanshi (can't wait to see the rest of those Indian Police flicks too...if I can find them streaming or something somewhere..)

Cecil, thanks for these Bollywood horror recommendations. I haven't seen a lot of Bollywood films, but I'm glad to find they have a thriving horror movie industry. Hope to see some of these come to US streaming so we can enjoy them over here!

Great video Cecil. As someone who has recently been getting into Bollywood this has been a refreshing video for me. Also may I add "Shhh!" to your list?
Nice to see such variation Cecil, it's appreciated. I see Indians answering in the comments, I do wonder if anyone can suggest horrors with having as subjects beings more strictly related to their culture, if any of these movies exist (I would be surprised if none existed).
I worked in a cinema for about 13 years. We played Bollywood on semi regular basis. Mainly we shown the traditional song and dance ones, but did show the, how do I word it, the more normal type of films. These never seem to go down well. The traditional films would sell out, every time. When we showed a more normal style film, maybe as few a ten would see them.
When cinema reached masses in India somewhere around 1950s, there were no theatres in towns and villages. There was something called "Touring Talkies" like circus. A small crew with a projector and the film reel would come once in 3-4 months hopping villages and announce the screening time, put up posters. They would tie a white cloth in an open field and people would sit on both sides. People would really get into the movie and wished it would last as long as it can, because nobody knew when the Talkies would come next to their village. With enough songs and dance numbers, the audiences would get their fill. Song and dance evolved, but it remained a permanent fixture in Indian movies. (I say Indian because there are a minimum of 18 official languages and 7 different major film industries).
It was funny in Stree when they were trying to figure out the spirit. She’s educated since she knows how to read but stupid because she believes what she reads. I would add Bhediya to the list of Indian horror. A man gets attacked by a wolf and, well, you can figure it out.
Tumbbad flopped very hard when it first released in India, but it gained a cult following over the years which prompted its re-release last month and they are making a sequel slated for 2025. Fingers crossed it doesn't catch sequalitis 🤞🤞
Since "Bollywood" is usually referred to commercial Hindi cinema, Tumbbad doesn't qualify as a Bollywood film but is an independent production. Maybe he will mention Tumbbad in some other video.
I have to admit I love the straight rip offs of American films. I also like seeing their attempts to replicate scenes and practical special effects, the lower the budget the better. If you haven't seen it yet the Bollywood Thriller video clip a real treat.
It's so refreshing to see an American acknowledging anything that isn't American-made. I wish more of your countrymen realised there's a whole world out there.
A few people in my audience watched this and are going to give them a go but overall, most are skipping sadly. I'm always trying to expand people's horizons but sometimes, they just want the same old, same old.
@GoodBadFlicks Yeah, that closed mindedness is a huge shame. Not only will those people miss out on some great stuff, but those brilliant films won't be seen as widely as they deserve.
Only seen a few Bollywood films, and I love each one I have seen. Singham is great, and what got me in with some of the meme clips I've seen of it. That lead me to Action Jackson, which I adore and is a great movie of the genre. Ek Villian is a very interesting "love story with no heroes" as it puts it. Krrish 3 is... An X-men/Superman knock off that is wild.
