So happy to see Overlord and The Ruins getting some love! The Ruins has been stuck in my head ever since some friends and I picked it on a whim for a horror movie marathon night (that also included House of the Dead, so you know we were going into the films blind)
I love Overlord so much, I managed to pick up the blu ray new for £1 the month it was released because my local One Below (like a UK version of a Dollar Tree) somehow had tonnes of stock of it 😂. I’m also fond of the Ruins. Touristas was called Paradise Lost over here which I prefer
I was pleasantly surprised by Dead Silence. Pretty solid horror movie. Overlord was exactly what I thought it would be and it's amazing.

Thank you for calling attention to The Ruins. Every time I say it's good, when talking horror with people that haven't seen it, they look at me funny. What a hidden gem.
I love Dead Silence! Actually a scary premise and the execution on the story is really good. No clue why why no one went out to see it. It had a pretty big marketing campaign and even its own house at Halloween Horror Nights Orlando the year it came out. Glad to hear you talk about it on here.
Loved Overlord. I worked at a cinema when that was released. We had digital posters, which looped posters and trailers every 15-25 minutes. In the run up to it release, we had the digital posters of the film that also played the trailer under it. It had the scene of the German commanded with face all ripped up. I had to tell the manager that it should be removed as could upset the younger children who visited the cinema. It did, but only after about a 2 weeks. Luckily we didn't get any complaints about it.
I saw My Soul To Take in 3D and I was blown away. The 3D (from memory) impressed me, as it wasn’t the bs gimmick stuff, it added depth to the film. I loved it regardless
Dude, The Ruins is a master piece. I've always loved it. I recently showed it to my girlfriend and it straight up traumatized her and her 15 year old kid.
This actually has a great aesthetic and intriguing premise. Rumor has it that Gore Verbinski (Rango, Pirates of the Caribbean) made it purposefully because the studio didn't approved to let him direct a Bioshock adaptation and this was his response.
@ yeah I heard the same thing, that this is basically his George Lucas’s Star Wars… You won’t give me the rights to the thing I want, well fine I’ll make my own thing
Its weird The Ruins flopped, because when it came out ALL i heard was how great it was. I went and saw it and LOVED it, even bought the book right after. This is actually the first ive heard of it not doing well, i just assumed it did decent.
This film is like an evil spin-off from Captain America: The First Avenger. I was surprised serious screenwriter Billy Ray (Breach, State Of Play) worked on it.
Great video, Cecil! I’ve seen all of these movies except for Dead Silence. I'm glad you're showing them some love especially The Ruins and My Soul to Take. My Soul to Take is a good, entertaining movie I don’t care what anybody says otherwise❤
This just might be one of the few times I've already seeen two of the films featured on your show... probably because its the mainstream one.Good call on The Ruins and Turistas I am honestly surprised to hear they were flops!
Haha...Turistas reminds me of my old roommate going to South America and getting his shoes stolen...TWICE! On two different trips, these little kids ran off with his shoes, and he had to walk through the jungle. I think he took them off really quickly to do something, and they just ran up out of nowhere and stole them. Pretty funny stuff.
i think somebody should make "The Hunt" justice. it was buried by a terrible promotion and its an incredibly fun movie. i consider it part of a theoretical quadrilogy together with "Raze" "you're next" and "ready or not". plus Betty Gilpin as Crystal is hands down my favorite female action lead since The Bride
it was a movie that poked fun at Right and mostly left ppl in my opinion , and i loved it also... i'm sure the politics of it meant that both sides didn't took the time to watch it... worst idea ...
I enjoyed the ruins when I rented it years ago (rental store era). If I remember correctly from the DVD features, Ben Stiller was heavily involved in the production including writing and assisting in directing but refused anything more than executive producer credit because his name was associated with comedy.
Darn it, I was hoping you we're going to talk about Rockula. Oh well, there's always next year. Although you may not make it if you don't talk about Invasion USA this Christmas.🧔
It remember my friend and I seeing Overlord in the cinema, didn’t know anything about it, just saw the poster and said “why not”. We had a great time!! Definitely surprised no one was talking about it.
Again you've picked excellent movies to review that have been overlooked! Dead Silence 2007 I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the film, so as I do with many horror classics I converted it to Black & White for an even more atmospheric experience and boy it's very creepy with the shadows. I love the Ruins 2008 a bypassed but excellent take on environmental horror. Turistas 2006 very good. A piece of trivia director John Stockwell who directed that film co starred as the character ''Dennis'' in Stephen King's Christine 1983. Overlord just a wild over the top ride. And personally I really enjoyed Wes Craven's My Soul To Take, being that I am a fan of his. Thank's again for the reviews Cecil.
Well, if this is anything to go by, you're not alone; plenty of other horror-TH-camrs have made videos expressing how underrated 'Overlord' was. And yes, they've also compared it to 'Wolfenstein' and 'Resident Evil'. =)
Dead silence was actually really good, and it was good to see the lad from 'home and away' in a bigger project..... And the Ruins was absolutely crazy awesomeness.....❤
Good list. We saw all of these in the theater except Overlord. Ironically, it might be my favorite movie on this particular list. Between Overlord and The Ruins. I LOVED The Ruins upon first watch. I'm a gore hound but this was definitely a little more aggressive than I thought it would be. I liked Dead Silence but it just wasn't quite what I expected. Lots of good atmosphere. Touristas wasn't quite as good as I had hoped but I'd give it a thumbs up. It feels more realistic than the Hostel movies though I must admit, I'd have to say I enjoyed the first two Hostel movies more than Touristas. My Soul To Take... I dunno. I love Craven so I hate to hate on any of his movies. I think the general idea was pretty decent and it looked pretty good, but the most of the acting is just pretty sub par and the pacing wasn't and I figured it out pretty early. There were some moments with decent emotion. I hated reading some of the reviews when it was released. It is definitely better than the reviews. Craven had an enviable career but... I wish My Soul To Take was better. Having said that, I'd still recommend giving it a watch. I'd just put it in a distant last place on this list.
"Turistas" under the title of "Paradise Lost" is widely available in the UK on Amazon Prime. I watched it only recently: an excellent film. I recognised the film from the clips you played but had not heard of the title "Turistas" and so figured it was under a different title.
Last one... I proudly saw Overlord in the theater with some friends and it was baller! One of the last movies i saw in the theater by choice and not dragged to. Amazing movie and so much fun!
I didn't know these were overlooked back then. Watched all of these (except My Soul to Take) with my friends. Though we tended to only watch horror movies in theatres.
I loved Overlord! When I first saw the trailer in theaters, I actually thought it was Wolfenstein until I saw the title. One factor that led to it flopping was that they released it in November, AFTER HALLOWEEN!!! When everyone was now focusing on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
"Overlord" was an absolute blast, which reminds me that I'll definitely go and re-watch it. It's also, for me, a great example of a film that looks way more expensive than it actually is. Without knowing the budget, if you'd asked me how much it cost, I would've guessed somewhere in the $80-100 million range. But nope -- just $38 million, a great cast and excellent filmmaking.
I loved Turistas. When Far Cry 3 came out, as I was playing, a lot of the story reminded me of this movie and its premise. I wish I could watch it because I haven't seen it since it came out.
I remember hearing about most of these around their releases, except for My Soul To Take. I think The Cobwebs Channel recently covered Dead Silence, but I might be confusing the reviewer, can't remember exactly. I remember when Blade Runner 2049 released and did the same as the first, earning just less than its cost. While that may sound disappointing, I read at the time that the repeat performance could very well secure the film as better than a blockbuster because it would become a cult classic. I think the same can be said of any mainstream film that doesn't become a smash hit, because a film doesn't need to be a monetary success to be enjoyable, and people watch films to be entertained.
Thanks for a great list of films, Cecil. I've seen all five of them and I agree that they were better than their box office result. I especially loved "Dead Silence". While I am sure the change of pace from Saw was a turnoff for audiences, I loved the "classic Universal look" that James Wan seemed to be going for. It clearly showed that James Wan was anything but a one-trick pony filmmaker.
I imagine Wan was paniking at the time because he broke in with Saw and then Dead Slience was a pretty big flop. Thankfully it didn't hurt his career in the long run.
I think what also hurt Turistas was that it was a bit similar to Hostel with the difference being that the characters were not killed by wealthy elites for the fun of it, but so their organs could be sold on the black market.
Dead Silence has one of the most human lines in Horror of recent memory: "Don't make me chase you, I'm almost out of gas!" I noticed that most of these titles have absurd release dates for Horror: April, November, December. What were they thinking?
I really enjoyed The Ruins. My family and I had no idea what to expect and we were shocked, in a good way. The way the plants tricked the group into thinking they are hearing the cellphone was icing on the cake. I was also surprised that it was based on a novel, and that Ben Stiller produced it. i really enjoyed it at the time, but unfortunately, it still had some naysayers at that point. One user I used to watch a lot, Phelous, really didn't like it, but his review was funny.
Have you ever reviewed Mansion of Madness? I think it was filmed in the late 70s and I found it to be very creepy and well done when I watched it on a nice projector. Santa Sangre is also a crzy movie if you can do Jodorowsky
Thanks for reminding me of My Soul To Take, I have had the film on Blu Ray for years. I should probably watch it since I love Nightmare on Elm Street, The New Nightmare and The Hills Have Eyes.
Great video some cool movies in there :) For anyone interested in 'Turistas' its a great movie and is available under another title 'Paradise Lost' on Region 2 DVD for pretty cheap. Well worth a watch.
I remember reading an interview with Wes Craven done after My Soul to Take had come out. He said they didn't have a trailer for it till a week before release. That probably didn't help. I saw Overlord on the day it came out and thoroughly enjoyed it. Didn't get much publicity beforehand though. I don't recall a trailer appearing till about two months before the release. And that was the first I'd heard of it. With 3d; I chose to see Avatar in 2d. I saw Alice in Wonderland in 3d because it was the only option on the day I went to it. I loved the experience. Then in due course I saw clash of the Titans. Which I think was a conversion. And that put me off. It doesn't help that I'm short sighted and colour blind so I don't think the whole thing really worked with my eyesight. I put the glasses on over my normal glasses. I know someone else who wears glasses and they tried them after taking their glasses off. And didn't like the experience either. I recall watching the first Captain America in 2011 in 2d and seeing some bits that had clearly been set up to be effective in 3d. Had to see Dredd in 3d as it didn't get a 2d release. Which is probably one reason it didn't do well enough for a sequel. I saw Gravity for the second time in 2014 in an extreme experience. Which was big screen stereo sound 3rd. The sound was amazing but even so, never bothered with 3d since. Of all I did see in 3d, I never saw one where the 3d enhanced the story. So it just seemed pointless to me.
Hey, Cecil. I've seen all five films on the list, and the only one I didn't care for was Turistas. I should give it a rewatch and see if my opinion has changed after almost two decades. The Ruins is hands-down the best on the list, and if anyone hasn't read the book, they should. It's equally as good. Lastly, I want to point out that My Soul To Take has Frank Grillo and Danai Gurira as the detectives. This is before they blew up in the MCU and The Purge franchise, and The Waking Dead and Black Panther, respectively.
Out of these, I've only seen Dead Silence, but me and my sister loved that film. I get that people expecting another Saw were dissapointed, but it's a solid film in its own right. Love the music as well! I think I bought My Soul To Take at some point, so I need to find it and watch it as well. :)
it's hard to believe the first two on this list were considered flops. They sure gave me the creeps with their concepts (especially The Ruins) which made me appreciate them more.
Most of the listings for it on ebay that are around $5 are for the disk only, or "pre-owned". If you want it brand new, Turistas can be had for a little under $10. Personally, if something isn't rare or overpriced, I'll spend the extra money for something that hasn't been manhandled by a stranger.
Saw The Ruins on cable without knowing anything about it and it was a very nice surprise when the plot unfolded
Also, Wilde was pretty famous before Tron because of House.
Turistas is currently streaming on Prime under it's UK title 'Paradise Lost' it's the Unrated version too. For anyone interested in watching it 🙂
Thanks for the warning. I will steer clear of Prime for at least two months.
Cheers was gonna say same lol

The Ruins actually freaked me out, it was actually creepy and gross.
I loved that movie. I actually went out and got the book the day after seeing it, and it was even better.
The body horror was great. Loved the film. Need to read the book.

I rented it from Netflix back in the day when they still did that

While I am sure the change of pace from Saw was a turnoff for audiences, I loved the "classic Universal look" that James Wan seemed to be going for. It clearly showed that James Wan was anything but a one-trick pony filmmaker.
I imagine Wan was paniking at the time because he broke in with Saw and then Dead Slience was a pretty big flop. Thankfully it didn't hurt his career in the long run.
Think I saw every one of these in theaters except My Soul to Take. Enjoyed all of them
My Soul To Take is such a fun movie, I wish I would’ve caught it in theaters. Really loved it.
finally some lover fo MSTT. i saw it when it came out, i think i was a teenager XD went to the movies with a friend and we had a blast
I think what also hurt Turistas was that it was a bit similar to Hostel with the difference being that the characters were not killed by wealthy elites for the fun of it, but so their organs could be sold on the black market.
"Overlord" is a genuinly hidden gem in my opinion. It looks great and it's very entertaining.
Dead Silence has one of the most human lines in Horror of recent memory: "Don't make me chase you, I'm almost out of gas!"
I noticed that most of these titles have absurd release dates for Horror: April, November, December. What were they thinking?
The Ruins concept reminds me of that GI JOE episode with killer vines.
Overlord was the only one of these I have seen and I was honestly surprised at how good it was.
I heard about the ruins, and given the plot, I was wondering why the locals don't just spray the plants with weed killer.
I'd use a flamethrower, personally.
They cover this in the movie
Thanks for reminding me about Dead Silence - I saw it upon release and did not think much of it. Will give it another shot - IMDB says it's on TUBI
Definitely check out Touristas. Very underrated.
At the very least, Turistas is a very pretty movie that gets really disturbing. Hope you enjoy it more on a rewatch.
Out of these, I've only seen Dead Silence, but me and my sister loved that film. I get that people expecting another Saw were dissapointed, but it's a solid film in its own right. Love the music as well! I think I bought My Soul To Take at some point, so I need to find it and watch it as well. :)
Overload is the only one I haven’t seen, have added it to my watchlist. Love the other 4 and own all of them 😊 💿
Overlrod is really good and the ruins is another good one. need to see the other ones :O
Overlord, The Ruins and Turistas have always been in favorite movies list. I rewatch Turistas every few months. 😊
I love all these movies especially The Ruins and Overlord, Wyatt Russell is doing his Sci-Fi/Horror/Action roots proud
The indigenous people speaking Mayan dialect in the Ruins is a nice immersive touch.
Overlord was amazing! Definately worth the watch.
I thought Overlord was kinda crap, but found Frankenstein's Army just delightful!
it's hard to believe the first two on this list were considered flops. They sure gave me the creeps with their concepts (especially The Ruins) which made me appreciate them more.
God, Overlord was SO FUCKING GOOD! Freaky, funny, and bloody as hell. First film I saw Wyatt Russel in, and he's indeed his fathers son.
Yes! He's really good
Just checked, Turistas is cheap ($ 5) on DVD on eBay. However, Tourist Trap is like $ 100.
Great video Cecil
Thanks!
The Ruins is so great. I got it on a lark from a redbox and REALLY enjoyed it. I rewatch it every now and then.
Overlord is fucking fantastic. I was lucky enough to see it in the theatre, and loved every minute of it.
