  • A touching behind-the-scenes look at the man behind the myth: Andre the Giant Roussimoff, in his iconic role as Fezzik, the lumbering behemoth with the heart of gold in Rob Reiner's The Princess Bride. Cast and crew members look back on their time on and off set with Andre.

It was apparently his favorite role because the role of Fezzick emphasized his humanity rather than a monster. Also as seen in this video, everyone loved him and that helped with his insecurities about his body.
So this was probably one of his favorite moments in his life that didn’t involve his wrestling career.

I think Andre even said it in this video...the world just isn’t meant for tall people. It’s so much easier for me to get around than somebody who’s your size or taller. It’s easier for me to get in and out of cars. I can sit in the back seat without any problems. Airplanes aren’t an issue. Airplane bathrooms aren’t an issue. I can fit anywhere basically. So, even though like I said, if I had my choice, I would prefer to be a little taller, my life as a short person is easy.

My grandpa would always make sure I was at the shop when Andre was due to pick up his shoes so that I could visit. I loved this movie and Andre's part in it. Those people critical of Andre from his "heel" wrestling days forget that those characters and story lines were handed down to the wrestlers from the bosses. There was an element of acting in professional wrestling that had nothing to do with the wrestler's true character.

Also, J.K. Rowling explicitly stated that all actors had to be British. At one time Robin Williams himself was interested on playing Hagrid (props given to Robbie Coltrane but how awesome may have been that) but couldn't.

Foodiecutie well. The character is English. So surely an Englishmen would be the best person for the job no? Plus can you really think of a better actor for the role than Coltrane?

Not saying it's completely possible, since Rowling would prefer British actors. However, at the same time I think Rowling would consider it. I can say this, he would scare the crap out of Dursley more since he probably could bend that shotgun for real.

I worked with a friend in high school whose dad was a construction superintendent who needed 2 people as clean up crew on weekends. While we were working, Tony Sanger showed up to install carpet in the finished apts. To those who don't know , Tony Sanger was at the time was the Canadian Super Heavyweight Arm Wrestling Champion. Tony showed up in his work van. When Tony opened up the side door, out stepped Andre the giant. Tony & Andre were really good friends & apparently Andre told Tony he would come & help him. I watched him carry 4 rolls of carpet like they were a child's toy. He was unbelievably strong! Very quiet & a nice person. Still remember that incident 44 years ago to this day!
