What makes it a classic is that it’s great no matter how many times you watch it. The story, the characters, and the dialogue are all among cinema’s best. It also has enough secret behind-the-scenes details to fill up an entire book. Having Andre the Giant on set made every day more interesting. He was a gentle giant who loved to socialize. Everything about him was massive, from his drinks to his flatulence.
Billy Crystal’s small part was dangerously funny. No one could hold their laughter thanks to his ridiculous appearances and expert ad-libs. His costars suffered bruised ribs and nausea or were banished from the set during his scenes. Every actor and crew member was dedicated to making the film the best it could be. They practiced so long for a difficult sword-fighting scene that they did it too well. It was over in only a minute, and they had to rechoreograph it to make it longer. A close inspection will also let you see that they also suffered for their art. You’ll notice a scene where Westley favors his left leg after an injury. There’s another where Inigo is actually knocked out by a bonk on the head from a sword.
The suffering never made them want to stop. They asked for as many takes of the final kiss as possible just so they didn’t have to go home. Many of them consider it their favorite work. Even Pope John Paul II and John Gaudi are fans! Like and subscribe to FactsVerse for more on Hollywood’s most universally beloved films. My husband and I were heading to our hometown to get married. I was a nervous wreck. We were packing up everything and I was terrified I'd forget something important; this was it. Our friend took Doug (the guy...) aside and said "I just saw a great movie. Let's kidnap Barb and get her over to the theater." So they literally each got on one of my arms and dragged me to a movie to get me some space. And it was The Princess Bride. Watching this here hit all the feels, in all the ways you can possibly imagine. For almost 37 years, through kids, and moving, and education and breast cancer, I cannot count the times we have said to each other, either word for word, or with love and in deed: "As you wish."

That sword fight really is one of the greatest ever. Jill Bearup, a stage combat enthusiast has a great analysis of it on her channel, but gist is that a fight is only as good as the people doing the fighting, and Mandy and Carey may have started off novices, but they were dedicated to that fight and worked really hard.

The first time I saw it was in sixth grade, back in the late 80's. Our teacher told us in advance, "We'll be watching a movie on Friday," to which the classroom responded with cheers. When he then revealed that the film would be called _The Princess Bride,_ we all groaned softly in unison. In spite of the lack of enthusiasm, that weekend, it became, and has remained ever since, perhaps my favorite movie.
Now an adult, the irony (that I was/am the disinterested little boy) does not escape me. So, do I think I've learned to remain receptive to new experiences?

We knew the film so well we acted out the rest of the scene without a hitch and laughed through it the whole time. VHS? You could have sticky-taped it back together! You'd have to have taped up both sides of the magnetic strip, but that would be enough to hold it for another 60 viewings! I have no idea how many times I've seen the movie, but it must be at least 20 times for the full movie. The movie is entertainment "comfort food". Like a warm blanket and a cup of hot cocoa while sitting by the fireplace on a cool evening. A timeless story with fantasy, love, action, humor, redemption, mystery, suspense. Reiner did a great job directing. It's clear the actors loved their characters and poured their heart and soul into their performances. The cinematography is gorgeous. The editing could be a master-class, with the pacing being near perfect. Wrap it all up in the beautiful soundtrack by Mark Knopfler. What's not to love about the movie?

Reminds me of how, during the pandemic, a large group of celebrities collaborated, where various people recreated a scene at home, for charity. There were a lot of annoying rich-people shenanigans going on, but that was not one of them--it was quite endearing. The person who had the idea put the whole thing on TH-cam for free, which, last I saw, was still there.

This movie totally changed my mind about Andre, I was just a kid and I kind of believed that he wasn't a nice guy, because he was a heel on WWF. But when I saw him in this movie, I realized that to play Fezzik the way that he did, with such warmth and humor, he had to be an amazing person. He really was at that. I was and still am a huge fan of his, because he was such a sweetheart of a guy, a giant, with a giant heart. Now I'm a short lady, 4'7" tall, but what I wouldn't give for just 1 hug from him.

One of the most charming, beautiful, wholesome films of all time that is absolute perfection in every way. To change anything…one line of script, one glance, one note of music (nod in homage to another movie masterpiece Amadeus) would take away from all that is extraordinary about The Princess Bride♥️🥹♥️. I’ve long lost count of how many times I’ve seen it and I could turn it on again any day, any time and I would be instantly engrossed. These characters and the lines they speak have become woven into our hearts and minds; part of the fabric of our culture. It’s a treasure for which I honor every single person who contributed to this work of artistic genius ♥️🥰♥️🥰♥️🥰♥️♥️🥰🥰. Thank you all xoxo

Thank you so much FactsVerse!! I feel honored for the ask and your reply♥️. I am an avid lover of all things related to movies and the stories behind the films that lend so much to my deep appreciation for every aspect of the process. The cinematography, music and score, the costumes and perspective. I could go on and on. I love the focus on the greats, the so called classics “Gone With the Wind”, the “Godfather” and another of my personal favorites “To Kill a Mockingbird” which is a work of art; but never to forget those films that are brilliant in their own right but may not fall under the traditional idea of a ‘classic’ such as Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom” which is precious or the incredibly clever and brilliantly voiced “The Emperor’s New Groove”; or the forgotten genius of “Ragtime” a brilliant, tragic, magnificently acted and executed film. I think you’re doing a fine job but I will definitely post if I think of anything I’d love to see! Thank you so much for your content which is wonderful! And for reaching out☺️🫶🕊️.

I won a free drink once in a bar when I answered the trivia question: Who composed the music for The Princess Bride? My cousin wrote to William Goldman and asked him if there would be a sequel. Mr. Goldman said there was a problem with getting "Buttercup's Baby" off the ground. I don't remember why, but he did say it would most likely not happen. He said to look at The Princess Bride characters like REAL people where good endings are only for the moment. I won't repeat what he said about the most likely future of the characters. To be honest, it was like he had given up on life and wanted to pass his sorrow downstream.

Apparently Andre scared all the passengers and attendants on the plane because he let out a massive fart. The fart apparently shook the plane slightly and made everyone think the big BOOM sound of his fart was one of the plain Engines exploding!😹 From what I remember of the interview Hulk had to apologize to everyone with Andre and they had to calm everyone down and tell them it’s ok Andre just farted that’s all! we aren’t going to die it’s fine! We are OK! 😹😹😹 if I could find and link the clip from that interview I would lol😹

Best story though... I was getting new tires at a tire shop when the cashier casually threw out an off the cuff remark that reminded my kids with me (and me as well) of the movie. One of my kids said something to him about it and he chirped back at them (10 yrs old and younger) that he LOVED that movie and we all started riffing on various lines from the movie. Great fun! Eventually, the guy had to get back to work though. But my kids were much happier and easier to manage the rest of the time we were waiting there. ❤
Years later we drove past the store and one of my kids was like "Hey! Isn't that where that Princess Bride guy works?" 😂

It's almost inconceivable that I have watched The Princess Bride between 1 and 2 times a year every year since it released on video in '88.

Cary was at the height of his beauty in this film.
    No equal.

I have watched this movie since I was little, it's been one of my favorites. I even named my imaginary dragon Buttercup because I love the name so much

I couldn't even tell you how many times I have watched this movie. I never gets old, and it never will get old in my mind. This movie is 100X better than 99% of entertainment even today.

I bought 2 Videos and watch it at least ones a year. Better then The Wizard of Oz. I once asked my Grandson Marine Friends a Groupe of about 12 . "have you seen The Princess Bride" all got a very big smile on their faces. Aloha, Annie
