As someone on Disability that doesn't have disposable income, and is an avid Nintendo lover since childhood, scalping is something that has always, ALWAYS made me furious, but... I couldn't tell you why, because I just didn't understand the logistics of it. This video actually helped me understand and now I've got things to look into further and I've got argument points now. And I really do appreciate it. Now go take your meds Muta, we worry bout you lol.

I just sold my switch to a riding buddy of mine for this exact reason. His daughter wanted one and he couldn't fine one for cheap. I have one that I haven't used in a year, so I sold mine to him for super cheap.

I saved for so long to try and get a switch so I could play smash with my brothers and my mom and I only managed to get enough money for one right after the shortages started happening. Yeah, Nintendo Switches have been hard to find ever since launch... I got mine about 3 years ago (a few months after launch) and thought the hype died down. I only found out I was wrong when my friend recently tried to get a switch lite for her birthday, and all of them sold for $300+ which was insane.

this video really resonates with me, because the switch was the very first big purchase that i ever put any effort into saving up for in my life, I bought it like a year and a half ago, and I guess, knowing that this stuff happens more frequently than I thought, I was pretty lucky that the store I was working for had like 4 of them on shelves. I enjoy every chance I get to use it because I was genuinely proud of my self for learning how to commit and save up for something. so learning that these scalpers actually do this shit all the time is crazy. also idk too much about stuff like that but the idea of a company purposefully making less consoles so that theres higher demand sounds awful.

Yeah, Nintendo doesn't believe in depreciation. I waited an entire year to get my Switch expecting it to be cheaper, but nope, still as expensive as it was when it first came out.
They believe in analyzing sales trends and adjusting accordingly. Switches are still selling at that price, demand has only increased. They were thriving before the pandemic and are on track to continue that pattern.

Yeah they don't. The games online don't get cheaper. Neither does the darn subscription service. Only plus is Nintendo Online is cheaper than your PS plus. I got a sub for my girlfriend on her birthday, that's when I found this out.
Paid $360 for a switch with mario kart 8 in February and now they cost over $420 just for the console.

My story with scalpers! I was one of the poorer few who kind of found out late about the ACNH switch and well too late for preorders so I had set out to search for one and had been looking for almost two months. When I had gotten close to actually buying one from my local Target that showed they had a stock of them in... I had learned from an employee that let me in on the fact that a local hacker had managed to buy up ENTIRE PALLETS and STOCKS before street date. I was absolutely heartbroken and flabbergasted. The employee said nothing could be done about the stock as it technically belonged to them. I couldn't do anything else either about trying to get one. I just felt defeated and it was all too expensive for me - the Switch was a stretch. So yeah, that's my story and it sucks. I wish something could've been done.

T thats not what “the market” means, the market regulates itself means you buy a playstation instead of a nintendo, making the demand for playstation higher and the switch lower, but when you get fanboys into the mix, who would give their asshole to get a switch, this happens
Man O' War Except the reason “fanboys” are willing to pay that much is because the Switch and PlayStation are inherently different in the experiences they provide. Your analogy is correct in cases like different couch brands competing with each other, however the Switch and PlayStation both offer unique experiences that you can only get from one. There are console exclusives, some games aren’t cross-platform and you can only play with friends on their chosen platform, and also you can play the Switch anywhere as long you have battery. So if someone wants the unique experiences provided by the Switch, it’s not as simple as “Just buy a PlayStation.”
retailers put their high dollar stuff in the back for two reasons:
1. to deter shoplifters
2. to hopefully convince you to impulse buy something on the walk there and back
So around Black Friday I’ve been wanting a switch and saved money. I was at Walmart waiting in the Nintendo switch line and was the first in line. A employee said that there’s only 5 switches and the first five people would get them so I was lucky to get one. There were 4 people anyways and we were all gonna get one but then it was getting close for Black Friday to start but then the employee came back said that they’ve “lost” the switches so we couldn’t purchase them. Luckily I had a family member at another Walmart go buy one for me but I checked the gaming section and there were 2 switches that were on the shelf and I thought hmmm didn’t they say they “lost” them so why is there 2 new switches on these shelves even tho I didn’t see them earlier that day when I can for the list of stuff for Black Friday
I'm not defending what that Walmart did, but they actually do lose stuff all the time during black friday. The walmart near me last year found some xbox one s's from black friday in june and then had to sell them cheap because they weren't supposed to have them anymore, and they were selling them for $90. I imagine they were that cheap because they probably reported that they sold them already and some other shit.

I tried to get a Switch when Animal Crossing came out. My wal-fart had 11 of them in stock. I couldn't decide if I should get it that day (not knowing about the impending shortage), and ended up waiting til the next day to decide to get it. I go back and they're all gone!
Cue a wild goose chase of checking every walfart and target around. Funny thing? Every place I went to said the same thing: "some asian guy came in and bought them all", i was so butthurt lol
Then on top of that, I end up being able to buy one on Target, online, through their "site to store" kinda thing. So my Switch was all paid for and checked in, ready to be picked up. I go there the next day, a 2 hour drive, and they can't find my Switch. Like WTF, it's like they pulled it back out of their lockup and sold it to someone else, i swear they got bribed or something lol

I bought the switch lite a few months after it came out. Put it on layaway and slowly paid it off. I wanted it only because I wanted to play Pokemon sword and sheild. Also, I figured it would be cheaper and better for me to get the lite since, I don't think I would ever hook it up to the TV to play it. That would be extra for a feature I wouldn't use. I've always been a hand held kind of person when it comes to consoles.

It won't remain like this. It's artificial scarcity, especially at the moment. You could sell your Switch, make some extra money, then buy another later. Or don't, because it's not really worth the effort.

We went from my home province all the way to Prince George BC on a family road trip stopping at nearly every stop and we didn't find a normal switch until we went in some random towns Walmart and they had 2 left. Sold out literally everywhere else these things are becoming insanely rare.

Actually, resellers use collectible when listing items on amazon because these prices are way higher than normal. If they list it as used condition, they would get a high pricing error on the listing. Collectible listings do not have a price limit.

I remember this exact thing happening to me, it was early in quarantine so I got lucky but all the switches were bought besides the lights. Luckily I managed to get one of them which I’m glad as I had to sacrifice a Christmas gift and some Birthday Money to get that Switch.

Bird bot actually helped me fight scalpers and get a switch last month. In the 3 minutes I got put it in my cart it was sold but somehow a minute later it somehow magically came back and I actually got a switch.

Kyle Markinson it’s a program made solely for US that helps search the internet for the Nintendo switch. It basically refreshes retailer websites like bestbuy/Walmart and automatically purchases it for you whenever it’s restocked. Essentially ensuring you get one. But resellers are using this to buy them up as well.

@@Noredlac_ I got it for around 230 or 245 new a few years ago. I've played everything that I want to on it and the only reason I go on it is to sometimes play Smash or Mario Maker online levels. The hours I spent on the latter are wild. Don't care about Animal Crossing and nothing coming out this year has my attention. The last game I cared about was Luigis Mansion 3 but I rented that and completed it. So now it kind of sits there and my PS4 is on way more often.
There are some amazing games like Breath Of The Wild but once you play through them, there's not much else unless you're into indie side scrolling stuff. It's not worth $500.
If Nintendo would just sell directly this wouldn’t be a problem, I don’t understand why they don’t want to do that.

I'm just gonna say, I'm so lucky that I got my Switch the way I did, literally in early 2020, y'know, when the chip shortage happened and they were super expensive out of nowhere and still are? I luckily got it from a contest, that you could enter and win without paying a dime, you basically had to do the best work you could at your job (It was a job event), the person who could complete the most orders and handle emails within a certain amount of time (From December 2019 - January 2020) would be able to pick from a variety of prizes, but most sucked, except two Switches sitting right there, and I was lucky enough to work my ASS off to get one, without paying a dime, and I'm still very happy about that.
I've had a lot of great experiences with it so far, and I've poured lots and lots of hours into many games. Boy, I got lucky.

this is so interesting to me, because in my country there was never any supply problem, even when AC or BOTW just came out. Sure, you might have to wait a week, but then it was back in stock.
I've been trying to find a decently priced switch for the past 4 months, I caught a restock on Amazon once and by the time I got to checkout, shit was already gone.
It’s because they have a bot that buys the Switches as soon as they restock, idk if he said that in the vid as I haven’t finished it.
Luckily I bought mine right before the pandemic got going, because we know we'd be holed up at home
Watch for Best Buy. They seem to stock them fairly frequently.

It was readily available in the summer of 2018. The prices were way lower and most major retailers had bundle deals. Not much has really changed since outside of a few more games. I don' t get it but I'm not an Animal Crossing fan.
They didn't say mid to late august. Everywhere I seen (which was well over a month ago), they said their production rates had "fully recovered" and that everything would "be normalized in the summer". You'd think after a month of them running production at full capacity it would've recovered but it hasn't. Don't expect the prices of these things to dip before September at best, price gougers know they're getting absurd prices for these things; mostly because of COVID-19, the massive unemployment payouts people are getting in the US, and the stimulus checks.

Last year of my Birthday, I had the chance to get a switch, but I wanted to wait till Christmas...My Mother was broke by Christmas, so she ended up saving up for me to get the Switch...And sure enough by the time she gives me the money, the pandemic happens...thus Switch Scalpers and Switch Drought happens...Sad Timez.. :(
This is honestly wild. As a switch owner, I would’ve never expected it to become this difficult to buy a switch after so many months of the console being out.
I actually managed to get a switch about a month ago after searching for a week and i bought it from GameStop for retail price (300 USD) But i still ended up spending an extra 400 more on games and a micro sd card since i prefer to have all the games digitally and the storage on the switch is only 32 GB. The moral of the story is don't give in to these scalpers and do the searching. My best advice is to call gamestop daily to check in on supply.
A tip for anyone who doesn't own a switch but is looking to buy one: DONT get the lite it will drift after a few months and become useless spend your money on a actual switch and make sure to have joycons ready
Or if you're handy with a screw driver, fix it yourself. Or get Nintendo to fix it.
Or just buy a computer and emulate Switch games instead of giving money to Nintendo for their poorly-built consoles.

speaking as a person that has dated a reseller before, they really just want money. they don't care about the fact that the product may be more available in the future, if they can sell it straight away for the highest price then they will make software to buy out as much stock as possible.
i find it....horrible tbh. i see people saving up for a certain electronic, clothing piece or concert ticket just in the end not being able to buy it because resellers have bought it all and are selling it double or more of the price it originally was at.
they make a big profit out of this which is why people get into doing it. i think my ex made about 90,000 in one year, which is impressive for being only 19 but horrible to think he made it from ripping people off.

I was lucky to find one at Walmart recently I got there when they were restocking stuff and one of them was the neon switch. I talked to a guy at EBgames and they can get PS4 and Xbox’s products no problem but Nintendo stuff is hard to get to stores, even the cases and screen protectors were sold out like what? Nintendo very small pp for this
I'm serious everytime I look in the other sections they have full shells not a single game out of place in fact there's even more just sitting in the bottom, but everytime I get to that red corner Nintendo so much of this stuff is missing I remember one point you couldn't even get joy cons for full month let alone screen protectors. In fact when he said he couldn't find a switch anywhere that was the first time it really had me thinking the only time I actually saw it switch at Walmart was the one on display, heck I found a classic NES next to a couple of lites.

I saw my local Walmart had a restock of switches the other day. I went 45 minutes after they opened and they were gone. The electronics section employee said there was a line for them before the store opened.

Sorry. I wasn’t clear on the math. He did spend 1200 to get 4 switches at 300 each. He took three of those switches and flipped them for 400 each. One hundred dollars extra per switch to pay off his own.
And this was when the switch first released. They were hard to come by then too.
We have had a mayor issue at the company I am working for with people complaining about Switch cases with no games inside. Turns out somebody at the warehouse (maybe the shipper?) was making very gentle cuts on the outer wrapping, to open the case just enough so the game card could slide out. Wouldn't be surprised to see many people selling games with no cases xD
A month ago Best Buy would put out Nintendo Switches for $300 plus shipping and tax. So basically normal price. But that was literally for 5 hours, I think you can still check it out.

I remember the amibo insanity. I worked at walmart and whenever we got fresh stock ( meaning ONE box that came with FOUR) someone would be waiting right at the shelf to get all of them. Nintendo has done this for everything especially if its successful.
Now capitalism has its upsides. But not like this....America....not like this.
Right as quarantine started the main circuit board of my switch shorted after only a year and a few months of having it leaving it bricked and unfixable. Ever since I've been trying to find a replacement switch for a normal price. Its bad enough that I have to go out and buy another switch because my old one decided to quite right after the warranty ended. Now if I want one I have to buy it for around twice as much.

On a smaller scale, this is happening with the valve index vr sets. They're already expensive, $999.99 for the whole set, and you have to wait a minimum of 8 weeks for them to ship. People are reselling headsets and controllers alone for over $1000+.
This happened to me. I managed to find a few at my target and I bought it 15 minutes after the store opened.
