I’d say those who brought from scalpers are part of the problem themselves. There’s absolutely no reason why you need a PS5 that urgently and have to support the scalpers. Sony also needs to do better, they can just set anti-bot measures and put people on waitlist if they can’t meet the crazy demand.

When I worked in the electronics department these same group of scalpers would come in as soon as we had a fresh stock of PS5s
They’d each buy one and then demand I accept their tax exempt cards. So they wouldn’t have to pay the sales tax.
I tried so hard to deny sales to them, pretend we didn’t have any or stock them later in the day so regular people had a chance of being able to buy them.
I got into several arguments with them and had my store manager turn them away. They made my life miserable.

The middleman excuse only comes into play if there is a barrier other than people buying them to scalp them. Like, if someone was selling them in a rural area with no stores that would sell them and it was a pain to get things delivered (or pre-internet days), then it’s at least an excuse.

    • @SCIFIguy64
      @SCIFIguy64 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Even then the locals who wanted a product they couldn’t get would just drive to a larger town. My folks grew up in small farming towns in Iowa, if they wanted a top of the line TV or VCR they would just go to Des Moines and buy it at MSRP in a Sears. Most towns would have appliance shops you could order limited products in anyways, with few markups except maybe a delivery fee.

  • @ToastyFruitcake
    @ToastyFruitcake ปีที่แล้ว +9

Retailers in my town completely shut down online orders for PS5s during the scalper plague. Only way to get them was to call up, check for stock and then go in and order face to face. They took note of you and enforced the one per customer rule. The scalpers would have to have recruited a LOT of people to get stock lmao. One store even put up fake stock online and took note of every inhumanly fast order and blocked them from further purchase attempts, alledgedly the scalper responsible whinged about that on instagram later that day (story from a friend, accuracy may vary).

A simple solution is for retailers to not sell online for the until the supply stabilizes and limit the number of consoles to 1 per person and record the state ID for each purchase. It won't stop someone from getting 2 or 3 with the help of non gamer friends but it will stop large groups from driving up the prices.
The manufacturer could also charge more for the first few months and bring the prices down over time so that it is clear to scalpers that they need to have a quick turnover or suffer a loss.

The store manager would come up to us and show us a text message from the district manager communicating to other store managers telling them to give the customer (scalper) whatever he wanted as he is spending loads of money on the items. He pulled me and the dept manager to the back room and had us load everything onto a cart and when the guy showed up he bought our entire inventory of 3ds's and the games that came out that day. Same thing happened with switches. Whenever I asked them what he needed all the consoles for they would respond with "oh im donating them to a shelter for kids" mhm yeah okay buddy.

@seth - Depends if there's a shortage and if there's more stuff in place to prevent buying many units. - I'd sooner think that a "pro" version would be more interesting for both consumers and thus scalpers. - A "slim" version would usually come later, towards the end of a console's life-cycle, so you could be waiting years anyway.

At first, they had supposedly limited stock for the sets, which were near-instantly snatched up by scalpers and instantly put on ebay for like twice the price (these sets were already like $200 as a base price). And then, after being "out-of-stock" for a while, suddenly the game sets all became made-to-order.

I don’t remember how I ended up there but I noticed that they had some in stock on the website (MW2 bundle) and I added it to my cart and I second guessed myself before actually ordering it.
A week or two later I was back on the website and everything was sold out and I was regretting not buying it the first time… that’s when I noticed there was something in the cart.
Click on it and sure enough, the PS5 was still there… go through the process and get a confirmation expecting it to bounce back at some point and throughout the next week or two I was constantly checking the tracker and it never updated and I thought for sure they canceled it and that follow-up was coming.
The morning it was supposed to be here at home in Illinois, I was in North Carolina for work in my way back when I check my email and it was shipped like 20 minutes before i checked it. I have never been in a bigger hurry to get home before in my life.
By the time I got home it was sitting in my garage. Those couple weeks were like an M. Night Shyamalan movie I swear…

Microsoft and Walmart had a good system going. I can’t remember how it worked, but basically they would contact you when a small shipment would come in and then you could only buy one Xbox and then you had to go into the store you shipped it to and have them scan your phone to verify your purchase. They made it so inconvenient for someone trying to get multiple consoles to resell but perfect for an average consumer. Through that system I was able to get a console about 7 months after release for $500.

I still have no interest in PS5 partially due to scalpers, partially due to the limited release, partially due to: the console's lineup just isn't impressive enough to justify buying it.
Back when all the scalping was going on, I'd go on craigslist and flag every single scalped ps5 I saw - because fuck em. I did this nightly for a few months just because it was a fun little game to play before bed: scroll through 3000+ listings, flag the ones in my area, flag ones in other areas nearby, flag ones in random states, just generally be a nuisance to the garbage.

His plan was to sell them at cost price plus whatever it would cost to ship them, or free for collection (as we both hate scaplers due to event tickets etc).
Anyway, he listed them for sale at retail price, explaining why he was doing it and also included the receipts with them.

Then, some time later, i remember a video talking about scalpers getting into issues with a buttload of those GPUs. They couldn't test every single one of them, stores would refuse to replace those and a majority of official market sites (eBay for example) would basically make them pay extra if cards they sold would turn out to be faulty and they would have to pay back the whole cost of the card to any customer who would have purchased by using their site.

The thing about scalping for PS5s or other consoles is that there's no real demand for it. There's a *desire* to be sure, but not really a demand amongst the casual gaming community - which makes up like 99% of gamers.
Why would anyone pay markup for a PS5 when they can still play the same games on a PS4 that they've already paid for? That seems to be a concept that scalpers didn't understand when they assumed cornering the market would allow them to control the price of the console. I don't have Xbox or PS products, but I do have Nintendo and for as long as they continue to make products for the Switch I'm not going to buy their new console.
I think the same can be said for most of the community, and it usually takes about a year (sometimes up to three) for games to finally be sold exclusively on a new console.

That's a step in the right direction at least. Now if only the consumers would stop purchasing pre-orders and full priced betas. Day one purchases are worthless at this point. Nothing ever works right out the gate. Looking forward to Street Fighter 6 in six months to a year from release💪. Unless I can find a physical copy for cheap sooner. Which usually ya can. Gamers gotta take back gaming!

It’s almost as if the market would inevitably catch up to demand and deem the hoarders’ collection to be a huge L.

Not meaning to be inflammatory to this harmless comment but some people do this to baby formula and people don't have a choice not to pay for it lol. It's evil

I still remember that day during the thick of the PS5 scarcity, I walked into this small EB Games(Canadian GameStop) at a mall.
The conversation about the scapling was sprung up when I was talking about to my brother. Then one of the employees asked if we were looking for one cause they have a few on the shelf and several in the back.
We said, "No thanks, but that is amazing."
After that, whenever we were in the area, I always walked back in there, and they always had ps5s in stock.
I gotta respect that. So now that place is my first go-to when I wanna buy something.

I didn’t get a series x on launch day due to scalpers so I waited a year until the series x Halo Edition was announced so I immediately drove to my nearest GameStop and pre-ordered.

I managed to get mine the day all those stores suddenly put them up online for preorder. Still shocked I managed it, but once they were out, the scalpers got them all. It was almost better the way it happened at first. Randomly open for preorder without prior warning.
