If you buy the latest iPhone, you should have that phone for a minimum of 3-4 years (some would say 5) to see a true upgrade. If you’re out here buying a new iPhone every year, you’re pretty much getting scammed at this point.
That's exactly what I'm doing. I've had the 8 for 5 years now, and one of the reasons I feel the need to upgrade is because my inputs are really starting to delay.
Totally disagree. the chipset in the pro max is insanely powerful pretty much the most powerful chip ever until the new s24, ultra... it's like having a console and a computer in your pocket and I love that power, and use every bit of it I can 😊
Muta, I believe the guy that does the "thumb pushing" on the phone does it to every phone he tests just for durability's sake. The reason isn't because most people try to break their phone, it's because a phone that flimsy can easily bend in the pocket. Most phones shouldn't be this easy to break even if you apply some pressure. The old iphones weren't and the new Samsung phones aren't.
Yes everyone forgot that the old iphones litterally bent in the pocket, which is why the bend test originally even existed lol. Which was more funny that this modern phone randomly failed it when it generally had a good track record for the past models
Agreed with all of this until your take on the whole back glass break test. The point of that was to show how much weaker the components have become compared to older iPhones, even other brands in general. If you drop the iphone 15 from table height its back glass has a high chance of shattering in comparison to say samsungs iPhone 15 equivalent which is far superior in terms of durability.
To be honest, I kinda impressed with their claim of iPhone 15 can run AAA games natively. But after I saw someone playing Genshin on it and still having a slight FPS drop every fast ingame camera movement, I starting to doubt it.

Another thing to consider is the material used. Titanium is reportedly 12 times as “good” at conducting heat opposed to aluminum, causing it to be so hot on the outside. Makes you wonder how the heat would be if they put these internals inside an aluminum body like the old pro models.
My black shark 5 pro has multiple copper blocks and vapour chambers with graphene sheets etc to push the heat to the frame of the phone to keep performance high, as it's a gaming phone it does start to feel quite hot to the touch but it never struggles gaming.
Where did you read that stat? If copper is considered 100% in a conductivity scale (it's the best conductor we know) then Aluminum is 62% and Titanium is 3.1%. There is usually a correlation between electrical and heat conductivity and this is true in this case as well. Titanium is not used for it's conductivity. It's one of the strongest metals and it's very light. When they need light and strong they use Titanium. They don't use Titanium for conductivity.
My iPhone 15 Pro Max 512GB went to around 20% battery charge after 4 days of lots of use for setup. So I decided to charge. The phone temperature (measured with a thermocouple on the left side at the titanium frame and the glass) peaked at 32.5°C (90.5°F) at 75% charge progress. Ambient is 24°C right now. For every Kelvin (=°C) increase of ambient temperature, the temperature of the phone will also increase by one Kelvin (=°C). This means to reach the temperatures claimed, you'd have to be in an ambient of 40.5°C (118.4°F). So yeah, not implausible but I don't think that those people were in such a hot environment. Either those are manufacturing defects that doesn't affect every iPhone 15, or people are just outright lying and spreading misinformation.
Dude, I was with you until the end. The guy that broke the IPhone 15 ProMax put the same pressure he put on all phones he has tested. The glass broke on the back and it's $200 to replace it. 😢 he said no other phone did that! It's way too fragile and not worth it.
Keep in mind that he didn't appear to have even come close to putting the maximum level of pressure he was capable of, as he stopped once the glass broke. While you won't be regularly putting much pressure on your own phone, there will come a day when you might accidentally sit on it in a way that breaks it.

I don't know what's apple's fetish with making glass phones. They want people to brake their screens super easily just to charge them more for replacements. I don't see apple entering the rugged phone game ever at all
Jerryrigeverything's "bend test" that resulted in cracking of the back glass panel does not generally involve a huge amount of force and is meant to test whether a phone will deform if, for example, you place it in a tight pocket or sit on it by accident. Most other flagship phones *including foldables* have held up fine for that part of his durability test over the years.
Well, he still applied a lot of force to it, which resulted in it breaking simple logic; it wasn’t to test if it would survive if someone sat on it by accident, which never happens unless you’re dumb. Android user cope 😭😂

I have an Iphone 8, although it still works, it is a lot slower now compared to when I first bought it, Apple is actively trying to make people buy the new iphones by slowing down the old ones
Not an iPhone, but my S10 still kicking. Had it since 2018. Still runs fast and still very much reliable. Tho the battery has taken a small hit, but then again I have only strictly charged my phone wirelessly since 2018.
7 was the worst iPhone. My phone stopped working after u get the os update. 12 pro max was when they got that flame back. 14 pro max is really good. 15 pro max is nice but more delicate.
Good point about there being no cooling. I guess that’s why I have such a ridiculous setup for my mobile gaming. It involves a bluetoothed controller, an hdmi lightning converter, an air conditioner and a 27 inch monitor 😂. Now I’m genuinely worried about getting the Vision Pro
About the phone cracking thing I think the point was to show how their glass backing is fragile but the phone itself is unbent. It’s not really unrealistic though cuz that can happen if it’s dropped
11:40 plenty of other phones and even previous iphones have survived that test just fine in jerry's videos. so its not some "unrealistic" feat to not break.
He doesn’t even apply THAT much pressure on the phones he tests, unlike some TH-camrs who run their phones over with their cars, or use hammers on the phones

The bend test makes sense, it tests the structural integrity of the device. iPhone 6 failed it and then it had massive issues with it bending in people's pockets. The 15 for example showed way less resistance in drops, which does matter. It could be for a number or reasons but the takeaway is that the 15 is significantly more brittle than past generations which might be a problem.
I'll be getting an iPhone 15 this year, but I'm upgrading from an iPhone 11, so it will be a significant upgrade for me. I was very tempted to get a 15 Pro for the titanium construction, faster USB 3.0-speed port and powerful GPU, but I've decided to get a 15 Plus instead. Like you said, I don't need to play Death Stranding or Resident Evil 4 on the bus (especially since I can play them at home, at much better quality, on my Mac Studio), and I can get a 15 Plus with a bigger screen and 256 GB of storage for the same price as a 15 Pro with 128 GB. The 15 Pro is overkill and the Plus is much better value for me.

After three years (technically four, as I bought my iPhone 11 in 2021 when the 11 range was already about a year old), I'm just at the point where I'd like a more advanced phone. Come to think of it, I predict the iPhone 15 Pro's A17 Pro chip will be in the next Apple TV, which will make it a pretty sweet little gaming console. In that case, I'll get an iPhone 15 Plus and the A17 Pro Apple TV.
Isn't the iPhone 15 Pro made of titanium too? That'll make it EVEN hotter without any cooling! The aluminium based ones _may_ be a bit better, but *not* a lot better in regard to heat. At least the aluminium ones will cool down faster, since aluminium cools down way faster than titanium.

For me I'm going from a bulky iPhone 11 that always felt like carrying a brick around in my pocket. Changing over to the 15 pro feels like a significant upgrade in numerous ways considering I am also getting all the little changes they made since the 11. Once in a half a decade upgrade I feel is decent amount of time to wait before upgrading to the newer model. Plus if there was any phone that was going to make me upgrade it was this one and for the USB C since I have a strong feeling Apple will go totally wireless next year with the 16, thus making the 15 a solid pick if you plan on keeping it for years to come.
Yeah, I’m with you. I was forced to get a new phone this week because my 5+ year old iPhone X got stomped on by my daughter’s horse. The amazing part of all that is it still worked! It was nearly in two pieces and was hanging together by a thread, but I could call, text, use almost all my apps, and generally worked so well I kept it for about a month. I held it together with those tough rubber bands that hold your broccoli stalks together at the grocery store. Anyway, I only got the 15 because it was a better deal for my data plan. It’s lighter, it has so much more battery life than my old X, and it’s much cooler to touch. I’m not playing graphic intensive games or calculating complicated statistics on my phone. I’m calling people, texting, streaming, and reading books. So I’m very happy with my purchase so far. I’m fine with buying a phone every 5-7 years. They are expensive because they are no longer a luxury but a necessity in modern life. But I’m not willing to spend my money to upgrade to the latest and greatest release every time. But hey, if people have the money and the time to go through hassle of buying the phone and transferring all their data over, I think they should do it and enjoy their purchase.
This is why I usually wait to buy “new” devices and not on day one. I don’t care how well engineered new devices are, they will always have issues no matter what on release. To make sure every little bug that’s in it is gone, the release date would be pushed further back.
CORRECTION: faster USB speeds on 15 PRO only. only the new processor has a USB3 chipset. the 15 and 15 plus have last years processor which had lightning port (USB2)
The fact the phone cracks with the force of a thumb though more just shows how fragile it is in that it won't take much to break it. Plenty of other phones can take such force without breaking. If your thumb can do it, if you end up sitting on it the phone stands no chance of surviving.

In defense to JerryRigEverything, he tested the iPhone 14 which is made of aluminum and held up better than the 15 Pro Max. If an Aluminum phone glass can hold up to bending, then so should have the glass on the 15 Pro Max.
Zack (Jerryrigeverything) mentioned in a follow up that it was likely not the glass that made the phone weaker, the flagships for apple, Samsung and google have been glass for some time now and they all have held up fine. It's most likely the way they designed it with a Titanium Frame with the rest of the body being Aluminum which leads to it breaking. Which is why the full aluminum on the other version of the 15 held up fine.

The exploding samsungs weren't really dangerous because of their power, it was the manufacturing process for the battery that made them prone to internal shorts under mechanical stress
They should let you choose through the settings how much current you allow the device to draw while charging. Sometimes I want that 30 minutes to full charge but typically overnight is fine
Well you can soet if choose by buying different watt charger. So if you have a phone with 80 watt charging you can buy a 30 watt charger or 65 watt or 5 watt ... Problem is apple, Samsung and Google only charge at 20-40 watts which is pitiful. Chinese fans charge as high as 120 watts now
I think it's very exiting what happens in the next years regarding true gaming on phones. Sure, games like death stranding are a bit overkill and I don't think phones are the place to play AAA games, but it's so perfect for indie titles. Like imagine playing Tunic or Hades on your phone while you're in public transport or at work, without needing a stable internet connection. And especially if the EU manages to force Apple to allow sideloading software from Steam etc it could get very very interesting.
Yeah but Apple and in consequence iPhones aren't phones for gaming not by a long shot. They heat a lot and the battery gets drained really fast with some games like CoD or Wild Rift, now imagine RE4 Remake on a damn iPhone, that battery isn't going to least more than a month

I use my phone daily for the UE Live Link facial capture app and that's probably reason enough for me to get the CPU upgrade but when heat is already such an issue on the 14 Pro Max, I sorta wince at how bad it might get on the new build. I bought a MagSafe heat sink for my phone at some point and it was an amazing purchase if you need that sort of thing. Highly recommend if you use your phone for high intensity tasks (i.e. if you use the cameras for extended periods of time while at home). Seems like most of them are made for older phone models but it still does a great job seemingly. Doesn't cool down the cameras themselves (i.e. they don't cool down as much as the center of the phone) but the core cooling makes a huge difference on its own in my experience
Anyway even as somebody who uses their phone's tech enough to warrant the upgrade, I can't see myself caring about it that much until they roll out their whole "GPT Siri" thing. Not enough concrete use cases for the new silicon to be worth it in my eyes yet IMO. Also, wow, man, I just need to say it: the iPhone 15 design is so ugly. Genuinely just looks like a complete downgrade from the previous model.

iphone 12 has the same camera as the iphone 14 or 15. period. well obviously, objectively they have a different camera but fir a normal human the changes are just insignificant you know. there is nothing different and you can use the features only if u are a professional or if u know a bunch of shit regarding cameras, appurture etc but at that point that person probably owns a proper camera, but nevertheless, you dont need some "tetra prism {buzzword buzzword} camera" for some pictures for instagram or whatsapp or for capturing memories itll all look the same anyways 😂

I've been getting my dad's hand-me-downs for the past few years so whatever he had is what I have. I planned on getting the 15, but hearing the heating issues and realizing that I was going to be spending $1,000 USD on only one upgrade (USB-C port), it is a waste of money. There are lots of better things I could spend that money on.
My first proper smartphone was an iphone 6S, and it was fantastic right up until about a year ago where it suddenly bricked itself for no reason. It was out of support (support goes back to iphone 7) so I bit the bullet and bought a new iphone. Eight years seems pretty good to me, the new phone is definitely *better* - especially the camera, and I'm happy with it. I'll use it until it dies, and then I'll see what the new phones on the market are like. I'll be more likely to buy an iphone if it lasts a long time again, and very likely to swap if it dies in a couple years. My philosophy with tech is, I'll stick with the company if the last product gave me good value, and I'll jump ship if it didn't.
This. I don’t even get why people are asked what others use. It’s not like we are being forced to use other people’s devices lol. I have gaming consoles, handhelds, laptops. Why do I care that my phone doesn’t turn into a laptop 😂. I think the only test phones have is saving your information. Being able to browse and watch stuff and maybe camera for those who care about photos
I can’t believe there’s actually people who change phones every year. I just upgraded from the iPhone X to the 12 base model after having the X for like 4 years. Loved that phone, it’s my favourite iphone. The only reason I changed was cause I wanted more storage, otherwise I would’ve been using that X until it exploded or something.

It’s funny because the only things they upgraded where camera features, so them downgrading the CPU overall would make it worse than the iPhone 14 with a slightly better camera.
The overheating is not a design flaw but another attempt to limit the lifetime of the phone. They got sued for virtually limiting the phone after an amount of time so they made the phone like this so it would deteriorate much faster. If its that hot just when playing now imagine if someone tries to play a game on it while its charging.
Only reason I upgraded from a 7 is because it died and I couldn’t get it to charge again. That phone went through swimming in a pond for 30 minutes and still worked like a charm. Even when I did upgrade I didn’t get the latest model 😂
The overheating thing seems to be an iOS 17 issue, and can happen even if you're not doing anything strenuous on the device. Hopefully they can fix whatever's causing it without nerfing the bew phones 😅
I'm still using iPhone 6 Plus and it's still working fine even though many apps are no longer working. Lol Yeah, I agree with your assessment regarding heating especially for CPU intensive games. I hardly play games on my iPhone/iPad anyway as I prefer to play on a bigger screen using a console/computer/Steam Deck. I'm quite surprise to see that the gaming market stats is bigger on mobile rather than on consoles/computers. I think the push for all in one devices including replacing computers won't benefit us in the long run as corporations are looking to lock users within their ecosystem. On top of increased surveillance, digital ID, etc. Time for a revolution by going back to dumb phones again; or use mobile devices that will allow users much greater control over telemetry and right to repair.
I loved my iPhone 11 but I gave it to mom cause she had the 8 and updates wouldn’t be the same. No ios 17. I got the 15 pro which did better on the durability test. Battery life isn’t a big deal since I work at home and it’s not getting hot at all. I haven’t had any issues, but I’m just using it like a normal person. 😅

I’m good with my 12 pro. Once battery starts to dip past 70% maximum capacity, I’ll just have apple put in a new battery and add extra years of life to my phone. Like muta said would probably only upgrade if there is a substantial improvement with the tech and even then I won’t upgrade anyways 😂
Sounds like most of your gripes are with the 15 Pro, not the regular 15 or Plus. Those phones use last year’s chip, and have no heat issues. With USB-C, a 48 MP camera with a pretty darn big sensor, a screen that’s more than twice as bright, etc. it’s a darn good phone.
Im still using my LGv50 and until now... people around me with newer phones still get surprised with the low light performance. its stopped at android 12 but its still an amazing screen with all around great performance from mobile games to emulators to music and reading. With the problem of a the aging battery. If this ever breaks Im jonesing to get the asus compact flagship next. Yearly Phone upgrades are really not as big compared to a decade or so ago.
I dropped my 2016 V30 in April 2021 and wound up getting a V60 on eBay to replace it. Not interested in updating any time soon but now you've got me interested in finding out what this Asus Compact Flagship is all about. I'll listen to a LG phone user over any Samsung/Google/Apple influencer any day of the week.

The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus don’t have these issues. The 15 plus in particular has insane battery life because it neither has the A17 chip or a hot titanium frame.
Hopefully this teaches you to not buy stuff on release day and wait to see if it's a dumpster-fire first. Applies to electronics, video games, and everything else.
I went from a base model iPhone 11 to a iPhone 15 Pro Max and would not at all tell people 'not to buy it'. Sure if you have anything from last 2 or 3 years it's not necessary but my phone was from 2019 and I upgraded in late 2023. The difference in that 4 year gap was certainly noticeable, especially in the chip performance. Likely won't buy again til 2028 or 2029 though.
This issue really only applies to the pro and pro max models, as those only were the only ones that got the CPU upgrade. The regular 15’s have the same processor as the 14, which seems to be a good thing in this case.

A16 is still the second fastest cpu (by far) on the market and the only discernible difference between the A16 and A17 is benchmark scores. Unless you’re a heavy mobile gamer, the only way you’ll ever know is if you look at the spec sheet.
I'd just like to point out that the Note 7's exploding was due to a battery design flaw. The internal temperature of the chip had nothing to do with it, the batteries design flaw weakened the separation between the positive and negative sides of one of the battery cells resulting in heating and short circuiting and eventually, explosions
My phone should not cost more than a car. I've never spent more than $150 on a phone, and I've felt less and less like I need to since we reached Functional Moore's Law Plateau like 5 years ago. Cheap midrange new phones are as capable and spec'd as flagships of yesteryear, and if I really want better build quality I'll buy a flagship from two years ago for a fraction of a cost of a new phone
I was really contemplating of whether to move from the 12PM to a 15PM, but it doesn’t feel like this is the one to move on. I really like the new cameras, but it looks like they are going to nerf the processor a bit, to keep children from burning themselves. Hopefully they improve the telephoto camera and get the software to play along with the 16
Yeah I would say hold off until the 16 PM (or Ultra, whatever they call it); there always seems to be more problems with the iPhone models that have bigger physical changes (i.e. the 4,6, and X)

I upgraded to the 15 from the 12, I waited out long enough. I think my purchase was justified. Plus the trade-in value for an iPhone is exponentially more than a trade-in for an android phone which offsets the price substantially. That alone makes the upgrade worthwhile.
The 15 line is great. Of course it have it flaws. But me that upgrade every year and sell the old one for higher price. I am actually impressed of all the changes. Camera, and performance. Titanium feels good in the hand as well, but I will only enjoy it a few more weeks, the slaps on a case
The USB spec is limited to 5 amps of current. The way the USB spec is able to provide up to 240 W of power is changing the voltage that it operates at, up to 48 V. Be spec, 5V USB operation and up to 3 amps of power can be provided as the default. Going to 5 amp service or to a higher voltage requires USB power delivery negotiation with certain mandated voltages supported (9V, 15V, 20V for example). This is where Apple still be 'with in spec' while simultaneously doing something custom by charging at non-standard voltages (say specifically 13.5 V) as custom values are permitted in the negotiation process. In fairness to Apple, they wouldn't be the first to do a custom voltage as I've seen 12V and 19V voltages in the wild on other equipment. High voltage, low amperage charging is relatively efficient while keeping things cool but higher voltages do need additional electronics and safety measures in place for it s circuitry. The one thing about the phone is the titanium frame which while metal, isn't the most thermally conductive or thermally capacitive metal. Radiative dissipation is based upon surface area which ironically is minimized due to having relatively flat surfaces. One thing also worth pointing out is that the display is relatively bright OLED which tends to run warm by itself. On the flip side, there are indeed plenty of internal thermal sensors internally. Battery, camera, processor etc. Apple can tune iOS keep things under a maximum thresh hold. Doing something like ray traced gaming while charging is indeed going to be an inferno. Conceptually possible to throttle charging speed or game speed or screen brightness dependent upon battery levels and temperature. Lots of knobs to tweak to keep things running cool but kranking too many of them down quickly will be noticed by users and proved a bad end user experience.

Actually JerryRigs have not put a lot of force to the back glass. It breaks because it doesn't' have that metal thing behind back glass that adds structure. They probably removed that so they can sell those replacable backs all over again.
The bendy phone thumb guy does it to test for everday usage and beyond (worded dumb, mb). He tests for if it can survive simple physical stresses, like being in your pocket, or if it drops off of a ledge. The iphone 15 is comparable to carboard.

I’m currently on iPhone 7+ and I was planning on getting myself an upgrade, going for the iPhone 15 ProMax but now after seeing that test video, I’m not so sure if I want to go after it. Kinda wanna wait a bit longer to see if they’ll even try to fix that or make the phones a bit better quality, I dunno. After seeing that and hearing about how it’s been going for people who own them, it’s kinda making me think twice about the upgrade.
tbh go for the s24 ultra, i'll be making that upgrade soon too coming from an 11 pro max. Ssecuirity is at the same level of apple now, the phone has alot more feautres, customisation, and the new galaxy AI is nice too and pretty usefull. You get QHD & 120hz refreshrate, even preforms better than iphone 15 in terms of gaming. And lastly therse flagships phones will not get laggy like they used to, these are made to last years and even have settings to allow you to prolong the battery life like maxing out charging at 80%

The Jerryrigeverything durability test is universally agreed to be a good durability test (besides the lighter one which is mostly for shits and giggles and he even acknowledges it and has for years now) unlike the "oh I ran over my iphone, dropped it 15000 times or down a flight of stairs or threw it in the middle of a lake" type videos because they have very realistic real world applications/parallels. And when Zac breaks the phone with his simple folding test that's a problem no other iphone has ever done that, no other modern phone (at least from the top brands like a Samsung or Google apple etc) has been damaged like that. And many people often put their phone in a backpocket and could easily break it when sitting down which is a far bit more force then say someone pressing it with their hands especially with some of the angles when sitting down. And with some reports it could potentially be very serious if the phone breaks a proper way and potentially punctures the battery which obviously could be dangerous to the person who has it in their back pocket sitting down. (Also a surprisingly amount of people do still use their modern 1000 dollar phones with no case or the thinnest one possible which won't exactly help the bending problem

Back when I was a kid, I saw my older sister playing Resident Evil 4 OG on her smartphone back then and it was COOKING the interior of the car on its own. I can't imagine how the 15 survives with RE4 remake even with all the downscaling to make the game work. It's a total understatement how much of a miracle Nintendo pulled to make Tears of the Kingdom function on their ancient console in handheld mode.
The Galaxy Note you couldnt take on a plane, the problem was specifically poorly manufactured batteries, not how powerful the phone was. The batteries had parts internally that were bent into eachother basically cooking them.
FWIW, it seems like there’s a bit of a “silicone lottery” scenario where some phones are really hot and some aren’t. I upgraded from an iPhone X and I haven’t noticed my 15 Pro getting very hot at all.
Was about to order it on day 1 given how I was due for a new phone. Was pretty thrilled to order it as I’ve had my XR since 2019. But figured it’s best I wait a week for the reviews and I’m glad I awaited. May just await for them to conclude what they intend to do, not like I’m in a rush for a new phone. I’d wager many are gonna take them to court given the issue with easily breakable compared to their last what, 8 generations? And of course over heating over merely using a non Apple usb (feels deliberate).
From a user 14PM to the 15PM. Only did the jump due to usb c. Did not expect anything else. But I am really impressed in both performance, camera quality and the feel of quality. I did saw the Jerryrig bend test, and yeah, I am not so keen on the change to titanium, since I loved the stainless steel phones. But I have done a bend test my self and it did not happens to my phone at least. So I am not afraid to use it, will continue to use it as I always have.

The reason isn't because most people try to break their phone, it's because a phone that flimsy can easily bend in the pocket. The point of that was to show how much weaker the components have become compared to older iPhones, even other brands in general. If you drop the iphone 15 from table height its back glass has a high chance of shattering in comparison to say samsungs iPhone 15 equivalent which is far superior in terms of durability.

Another thing to consider is the material used. Titanium is reportedly 12 times as “good” at conducting heat opposed to aluminum, causing it to be so hot on the outside. Makes you wonder how the heat would be if they put these internals inside an aluminum body like the old pro models.

My black shark 5 pro has multiple copper blocks and vapour chambers with graphene sheets etc to push the heat to the frame of the phone to keep performance high, as it's a gaming phone it does start to feel quite hot to the touch but it never struggles gaming.

Where did you read that stat? If copper is considered 100% in a conductivity scale (it's the best conductor we know) then Aluminum is 62% and Titanium is 3.1%. There is usually a correlation between electrical and heat conductivity and this is true in this case as well. Titanium is not used for it's conductivity. It's one of the strongest metals and it's very light. When they need light and strong they use Titanium. They don't use Titanium for conductivity.
My iPhone 15 Pro Max 512GB went to around 20% battery charge after 4 days of lots of use for setup. So I decided to charge. The phone temperature (measured with a thermocouple on the left side at the titanium frame and the glass) peaked at 32.5°C (90.5°F) at 75% charge progress. Ambient is 24°C right now. For every Kelvin (=°C) increase of ambient temperature, the temperature of the phone will also increase by one Kelvin (=°C). This means to reach the temperatures claimed, you'd have to be in an ambient of 40.5°C (118.4°F). So yeah, not implausible but I don't think that those people were in such a hot environment. Either those are manufacturing defects that doesn't affect every iPhone 15, or people are just outright lying and spreading misinformation.
Dude, I was with you until the end. The guy that broke the IPhone 15 ProMax put the same pressure he put on all phones he has tested. The glass broke on the back and it's $200 to replace it. 😢 he said no other phone did that! It's way too fragile and not worth it.
Keep in mind that he didn't appear to have even come close to putting the maximum level of pressure he was capable of, as he stopped once the glass broke. While you won't be regularly putting much pressure on your own phone, there will come a day when you might accidentally sit on it in a way that breaks it.

Jerryrigeverything's "bend test" that resulted in cracking of the back glass panel does not generally involve a huge amount of force and is meant to test whether a phone will deform if, for example, you place it in a tight pocket or sit on it by accident. Most other flagship phones *including foldables* have held up fine for that part of his durability test over the years.

The bend test makes sense, it tests the structural integrity of the device. iPhone 6 failed it and then it had massive issues with it bending in people's pockets. The 15 for example showed way less resistance in drops, which does matter. It could be for a number or reasons but the takeaway is that the 15 is significantly more brittle than past generations which might be a problem.
I'll be getting an iPhone 15 this year, but I'm upgrading from an iPhone 11, so it will be a significant upgrade for me. I was very tempted to get a 15 Pro for the titanium construction, faster USB 3.0-speed port and powerful GPU, but I've decided to get a 15 Plus instead. Like you said, I don't need to play Death Stranding or Resident Evil 4 on the bus (especially since I can play them at home, at much better quality, on my Mac Studio), and I can get a 15 Plus with a bigger screen and 256 GB of storage for the same price as a 15 Pro with 128 GB. The 15 Pro is overkill and the Plus is much better value for me.

I had my iPhone 11's battery replaced last year and it's running great (especially after I purged about 20 GB of clutter).
After three years (technically four, as I bought my iPhone 11 in 2021 when the 11 range was already about a year old), I'm just at the point where I'd like a more advanced phone.
Come to think of it, I predict the iPhone 15 Pro's A17 Pro chip will be in the next Apple TV, which will make it a pretty sweet little gaming console.

Isn't the iPhone 15 Pro made of titanium too? That'll make it EVEN hotter without any cooling! The aluminium based ones _may_ be a bit better, but *not* a lot better in regard to heat. At least the aluminium ones will cool down faster, since aluminium cools down way faster than titanium.

For me I'm going from a bulky iPhone 11 that always felt like carrying a brick around in my pocket. Changing over to the 15 pro feels like a significant upgrade in numerous ways considering I am also getting all the little changes they made since the 11.
Once in a half a decade upgrade I feel is decent amount of time to wait before upgrading to the newer model. Plus if there was any phone that was going to make me upgrade it was this one and for the USB C since I have a strong feeling Apple will go totally wireless next year with the 16, thus making the 15 a solid pick if you plan on keeping it for years to come.
Yeah, I’m with you. I was forced to get a new phone this week because my 5+ year old iPhone X got stomped on by my daughter’s horse. The amazing part of all that is it still worked! It was nearly in two pieces and was hanging together by a thread, but I could call, text, use almost all my apps, and generally worked so well I kept it for about a month. I held it together with those tough rubber bands that hold your broccoli stalks together at the grocery store.
Anyway, I only got the 15 because it was a better deal for my data plan. It’s lighter, it has so much more battery life than my old X, and it’s much cooler to touch. I’m not playing graphic intensive games or calculating complicated statistics on my phone. I’m calling people, texting, streaming, and reading books. So I’m very happy with my purchase so far.
I’m fine with buying a phone every 5-7 years. They are expensive because they are no longer a luxury but a necessity in modern life. But I’m not willing to spend my money to upgrade to the latest and greatest release every time. But hey, if people have the money and the time to go through hassle of buying the phone and transferring all their data over, I think they should do it and enjoy their purchase.
This is why I usually wait to buy “new” devices and not on day one. I don’t care how well engineered new devices are, they will always have issues no matter what on release. To make sure every little bug that’s in it is gone, the release date would be pushed further back.
CORRECTION: faster USB speeds on 15 PRO only. only the new processor has a USB3 chipset. the 15 and 15 plus have last years processor which had lightning port (USB2)
The fact the phone cracks with the force of a thumb though more just shows how fragile it is in that it won't take much to break it. Plenty of other phones can take such force without breaking. If your thumb can do it, if you end up sitting on it the phone stands no chance of surviving.

In defense to JerryRigEverything, he tested the iPhone 14 which is made of aluminum and held up better than the 15 Pro Max.
If an Aluminum phone glass can hold up to bending, then so should have the glass on the 15 Pro Max.

Zack (Jerryrigeverything) mentioned in a follow up that it was likely not the glass that made the phone weaker, the flagships for apple, Samsung and google have been glass for some time now and they all have held up fine. It's most likely the way they designed it with a Titanium Frame with the rest of the body being Aluminum which leads to it breaking. Which is why the full aluminum on the other version of the 15 held up fine.

There is an adaptive charging mode which charges your phone to 80%, then starts charging slowly so that it's at 100% by the time you wake up.
I think it's very exiting what happens in the next years regarding true gaming on phones. Sure, games like death stranding are a bit overkill and I don't think phones are the place to play AAA games, but it's so perfect for indie titles. Like imagine playing Tunic or Hades on your phone while you're in public transport or at work, without needing a stable internet connection. And especially if the EU manages to force Apple to allow sideloading software from Steam etc it could get very very interesting.

I use my phone daily for the UE Live Link facial capture app and that's probably reason enough for me to get the CPU upgrade but when heat is already such an issue on the 14 Pro Max, I sorta wince at how bad it might get on the new build.
I bought a MagSafe heat sink for my phone at some point and it was an amazing purchase if you need that sort of thing. Highly recommend if you use your phone for high intensity tasks (i.e. if you use the cameras for extended periods of time while at home). Seems like most of them are made for older phone models but it still does a great job seemingly. Doesn't cool down the cameras themselves (i.e. they don't cool down as much as the center of the phone) but the core cooling makes a huge difference on its own in my experience
Anyway even as somebody who uses their phone's tech enough to warrant the upgrade, I can't see myself caring about it that much until they roll out their whole "GPT Siri" thing. Not enough concrete use cases for the new silicon to be worth it in my eyes yet IMO.
Also, wow, man, I just need to say it: the iPhone 15 design is so ugly. Genuinely just looks like a complete downgrade from the previous model.

Even though I’m an iPhone user, I never immediately buy the next couple releases because I know they aren’t significant differences. I still use my XS and it runs fine.
I've been getting my dad's hand-me-downs for the past few years so whatever he had is what I have. I planned on getting the 15, but hearing the heating issues and realizing that I was going to be spending $1,000 USD on only one upgrade (USB-C port), it is a waste of money. There are lots of better things I could spend that money on.
My first proper smartphone was an iphone 6S, and it was fantastic right up until about a year ago where it suddenly bricked itself for no reason. It was out of support (support goes back to iphone 7) so I bit the bullet and bought a new iphone.
Eight years seems pretty good to me, the new phone is definitely *better* - especially the camera, and I'm happy with it. I'll use it until it dies, and then I'll see what the new phones on the market are like. I'll be more likely to buy an iphone if it lasts a long time again, and very likely to swap if it dies in a couple years.
My philosophy with tech is, I'll stick with the company if the last product gave me good value, and I'll jump ship if it didn't.
Might wanna add to that philosophy: If the current product looks like a dumpster-fire from a mile away, RUN.

I can’t believe there’s actually people who change phones every year. I just upgraded from the iPhone X to the 12 base model after having the X for like 4 years. Loved that phone, it’s my favourite iphone. The only reason I changed was cause I wanted more storage, otherwise I would’ve been using that X until it exploded or something.

The overheating is not a design flaw but another attempt to limit the lifetime of the phone. They got sued for virtually limiting the phone after an amount of time so they made the phone like this so it would deteriorate much faster.

Only reason I upgraded from a 7 is because it died and I couldn’t get it to charge again. That phone went through swimming in a pond for 30 minutes and still worked like a charm. Even when I did upgrade I didn’t get the latest model 😂
The overheating thing seems to be an iOS 17 issue, and can happen even if you're not doing anything strenuous on the device. Hopefully they can fix whatever's causing it without nerfing the bew phones 😅

Yeah, I agree with your assessment regarding heating especially for CPU intensive games. I hardly play games on my iPhone/iPad anyway as I prefer to play on a bigger screen using a console/computer/Steam Deck. I'm quite surprise to see that the gaming market stats is bigger on mobile rather than on consoles/computers.
I think the push for all in one devices including replacing computers won't benefit us in the long run as corporations are looking to lock users within their ecosystem. On top of increased surveillance, digital ID, etc. Time for a revolution by going back to dumb phones again; or use mobile devices that will allow users much greater control over telemetry and right to repair.
I loved my iPhone 11 but I gave it to mom cause she had the 8 and updates wouldn’t be the same. No ios 17. I got the 15 pro which did better on the durability test. Battery life isn’t a big deal since I work at home and it’s not getting hot at all. I haven’t had any issues, but I’m just using it like a normal person. 😅

Litterly didn’t need that much power, or not much power won’t even be used either way unless it’s 4k. But Samsung also does that and have that feature..Samsung equivalent can still do it just as apple can. All that power for what? Play games that you won’t notice that much compared to a android?

I’m good with my 12 pro. Once battery starts to dip past 70% maximum capacity, I’ll just have apple put in a new battery and add extra years of life to my phone. Like muta said would probably only upgrade if there is a substantial improvement with the tech and even then I won’t upgrade anyways 😂

Sounds like most of your gripes are with the 15 Pro, not the regular 15 or Plus. Those phones use last year’s chip, and have no heat issues. With USB-C, a 48 MP camera with a pretty darn big sensor, a screen that’s more than twice as bright, etc. it’s a darn good phone.
Im still using my LGv50 and until now... people around me with newer phones still get surprised with the low light performance. its stopped at android 12 but its still an amazing screen with all around great performance from mobile games to emulators to music and reading. With the problem of a the aging battery. If this ever breaks Im jonesing to get the asus compact flagship next. Yearly Phone upgrades are really not as big compared to a decade or so ago.

The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus don’t have these issues. The 15 plus in particular has insane battery life because it neither has the A17 chip or a hot titanium frame.
Hopefully this teaches you to not buy stuff on release day and wait to see if it's a dumpster-fire first. Applies to electronics, video games, and everything else.

I went from a base model iPhone 11 to a iPhone 15 Pro Max and would not at all tell people 'not to buy it'. Sure if you have anything from last 2 or 3 years it's not necessary but my phone was from 2019 and I upgraded in late 2023. The difference in that 4 year gap was certainly noticeable, especially in the chip performance. Likely won't buy again til 2028 or 2029 though.
Was tempted by the 14 models, but I held off and said 'one more year' and so I did and then they announced USB-C and I was like YES!

This issue really only applies to the pro and pro max models, as those only were the only ones that got the CPU upgrade. The regular 15’s have the same processor as the 14, which seems to be a good thing in this case.

A16 is still the second fastest cpu (by far) on the market and the only discernible difference between the A16 and A17 is benchmark scores. Unless you’re a heavy mobile gamer, the only way you’ll ever know is if you look at the spec sheet.

I'd just like to point out that the Note 7's exploding was due to a battery design flaw. The internal temperature of the chip had nothing to do with it, the batteries design flaw weakened the separation between the positive and negative sides of one of the battery cells resulting in heating and short circuiting and eventually, explosions
My phone should not cost more than a car. I've never spent more than $150 on a phone, and I've felt less and less like I need to since we reached Functional Moore's Law Plateau like 5 years ago. Cheap midrange new phones are as capable and spec'd as flagships of yesteryear, and if I really want better build quality I'll buy a flagship from two years ago for a fraction of a cost of a new phone

I upgraded to the 15 from the 12, I waited out long enough. I think my purchase was justified. Plus the trade-in value for an iPhone is exponentially more than a trade-in for an android phone which offsets the price substantially. That alone makes the upgrade worthwhile.
The 15 line is great. Of course it have it flaws. But me that upgrade every year and sell the old one for higher price. I am actually impressed of all the changes. Camera, and performance. Titanium feels good in the hand as well, but I will only enjoy it a few more weeks, the slaps on a case
The USB spec is limited to 5 amps of current. The way the USB spec is able to provide up to 240 W of power is changing the voltage that it operates at, up to 48 V. Be spec, 5V USB operation and up to 3 amps of power can be provided as the default. Going to 5 amp service or to a higher voltage requires USB power delivery negotiation with certain mandated voltages supported (9V, 15V, 20V for example). This is where Apple still be 'with in spec' while simultaneously doing something custom by charging at non-standard voltages (say specifically 13.5 V) as custom values are permitted in the negotiation process. In fairness to Apple, they wouldn't be the first to do a custom voltage as I've seen 12V and 19V voltages in the wild on other equipment. High voltage, low amperage charging is relatively efficient while keeping things cool but higher voltages do need additional electronics and safety measures in place for it s circuitry.
The one thing about the phone is the titanium frame which while metal, isn't the most thermally conductive or thermally capacitive metal. Radiative dissipation is based upon surface area which ironically is minimized due to having relatively flat surfaces. One thing also worth pointing out is that the display is relatively bright OLED which tends to run warm by itself.
On the flip side, there are indeed plenty of internal thermal sensors internally. Battery, camera, processor etc. Apple can tune iOS keep things under a maximum thresh hold. Doing something like ray traced gaming while charging is indeed going to be an inferno. Conceptually possible to throttle charging speed or game speed or screen brightness dependent upon battery levels and temperature. Lots of knobs to tweak to keep things running cool but kranking too many of them down quickly will be noticed by users and proved a bad end user experience.

Actually JerryRigs have not put a lot of force to the back glass. It breaks because it doesn't' have that metal thing behind back glass that adds structure. They probably removed that so they can sell those replacable backs all over again.
The bendy phone thumb guy does it to test for everday usage and beyond (worded dumb, mb). He tests for if it can survive simple physical stresses, like being in your pocket, or if it drops off of a ledge. The iphone 15 is comparable to carboard.

I’m currently on iPhone 7+ and I was planning on getting myself an upgrade, going for the iPhone 15 ProMax but now after seeing that test video, I’m not so sure if I want to go after it. Kinda wanna wait a bit longer to see if they’ll even try to fix that or make the phones a bit better quality, I dunno. After seeing that and hearing about how it’s been going for people who own them, it’s kinda making me think twice about the upgrade.
tbh go for the s24 ultra, i'll be making that upgrade soon too coming from an 11 pro max. Ssecuirity is at the same level of apple now, the phone has alot more feautres, customisation, and the new galaxy AI is nice too and pretty usefull. You get QHD & 120hz refreshrate, even preforms better than iphone 15 in terms of gaming. And lastly therse flagships phones will not get laggy like they used to, these are made to last years and even have settings to allow you to prolong the battery life like maxing out charging at 80%

And when Zac breaks the phone with his simple folding test that's a problem no other iphone has ever done that, no other modern phone (at least from the top brands like a Samsung or Google apple etc) has been damaged like that.
And many people often put their phone in a backpocket and could easily break it when sitting down which is a far bit more force then say someone pressing it with their hands especially with some of the angles when sitting down. And with some reports it could potentially be very serious if the phone breaks a proper way and potentially punctures the battery which obviously could be dangerous to the person who has it in their back pocket sitting down.
(Also a surprisingly amount of people do still use their modern 1000 dollar phones with no case or the thinnest one possible which won't exactly help the bending problem

Back when I was a kid, I saw my older sister playing Resident Evil 4 OG on her smartphone back then and it was COOKING the interior of the car on its own. I can't imagine how the 15 survives with RE4 remake even with all the downscaling to make the game work. It's a total understatement how much of a miracle Nintendo pulled to make Tears of the Kingdom function on their ancient console in handheld mode.

The Galaxy Note you couldnt take on a plane, the problem was specifically poorly manufactured batteries, not how powerful the phone was.
The batteries had parts internally that were bent into eachother basically cooking them.
FWIW, it seems like there’s a bit of a “silicone lottery” scenario where some phones are really hot and some aren’t. I upgraded from an iPhone X and I haven’t noticed my 15 Pro getting very hot at all.
Was about to order it on day 1 given how I was due for a new phone. Was pretty thrilled to order it as I’ve had my XR since 2019. But figured it’s best I wait a week for the reviews and I’m glad I awaited.
May just await for them to conclude what they intend to do, not like I’m in a rush for a new phone. I’d wager many are gonna take them to court given the issue with easily breakable compared to their last what, 8 generations? And of course over heating over merely using a non Apple usb (feels deliberate).
From a user 14PM to the 15PM. Only did the jump due to usb c. Did not expect anything else. But I am really impressed in both performance, camera quality and the feel of quality. I did saw the Jerryrig bend test, and yeah, I am not so keen on the change to titanium, since I loved the stainless steel phones. But I have done a bend test my self and it did not happens to my phone at least. So I am not afraid to use it, will continue to use it as I always have.
