And Omar well he ain’t care about him being gay in his mind Omar was a straight Gee with an old school mentality. Keep up the good work, I’ll be watching 💯💯💯💯💯✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾

      Prop Joe was perfectly slick. You don't get to be Grandpa of the drug game in a major city without being perfectly slick. The theme of season 4 and season 5 is changing of the guard. The ways that were established in the '80s and '90s are over and a young kids are new breed and that's what Marlo represents, along with Michael, Namond and Dookie.

    The wire is the best show I ve ever seen. You can re-watch the show so many times and catch small intentions behind people's discussions. Prop Joe was the best example of it. Always a card in hand until he faced a player who didn't play by his rules

  • @SantomPh
    @SantomPh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +105

    Avon is also more cultured than we are led to believe. He makes references to the Civil War era book 'Man Without A Country' , the 'Day of the Jackal' and other things a gang boss wouldn't normally talk about. Stringer by contrast prefers boring management type books like the one in the meets he has and economics journals. Avon is a listener of RnB and gangsta rap, Stringer has nothing in his car but his own voice. Although he is brutal and undoubtedly a villain, Avon is still one of the people, whereas Stringer is remote and as foreign as Idris Elba himself is.
    In Marlo's organization it's the opposite- Michael is the remote, aloof one with a smart brain while Chris and Snoop are the cheery assassins with a professional rep and music always in the car. Yet Michael is the one we can relate to, the other two are psychos.

    Prop Joe was highly intelligent, but the thing is he started to trust the wrong people in Marlo an didn’t see his nephew as a potential liability fast enough which also was the case with Marlo. Prop Joe got too comfortable. Can never get too comfortable in the drug game or in life period. Always got to be at least two steps ahead in life . Great breakdown of Proposition Joe . Keep up the good work 👍🏽

    • @eribric5556

      I don't think he ever trusted Marlo.
      He simply couldn't find a way around him, so he used his only card, which was mentoring him.
      He couldn't extinguish the uncomfortability Marlo brought him.
      Too dangerous and relentless
      Marlo was a hybrid of the game. He embodied ALL of the different traits it makes to make a boss.
      His brilliance allowed him to manifest those different traits in different measures at different times....at will.
      It had to be this way.
      I look at it like this...it took the best of the best to end him.
      Says something about Prop.

      @Rayon Johnson if you are uneducated and you haven’t read many books. Then you wouldn’t understand the nuances in this conversation. And you won’t understand why everything you said is wrong. For example. How would the co-op take on marlo and his empire. When they couldn’t even handle a bunch of New York niggas from out of town? They needed marlo to come clean up that mess for them. If you can’t run out of towners off your corners and out your city. Then you won’t win a war against the most ruthless organization in Baltimore! Prop joe jumped in too deep of waters when he fucked with marlo. We must come to terms that when it comes to this street shit marlo reigns supreme! He’s unmatched intellectually and emotionally!

  • @FloRizzle138
    @FloRizzle138 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    The interesting thing I found about Prop Joe is how skilled he was at manipulating how others perceived him. He told Omar in his first encounter with him during the peace talks between Stringer that 'if you ever robbed from me, I'd kill your whole family'.
    Similarly, in S2 when Sergei brings Nicky to explain what Cheese had done to Ziggy he comes across considerably more intimidating than he did during his talks with Stringer, Marlo and even Omar later on.
    I think it was his understanding of social psychology that kept him ahead of the game for so long. He always knew exactly what to say to anyone.
    However his downfall was still adhering to the old school ways and practices and codes of conduct and respect and not realising that Marlo and even his own kin Cheese belonged to the new breed.

    I think an aspect of Prop-Joes personality that gets downplayed vastly is his genius level intellect, because Prop-Joe hands down was the smartest of all the players on The Wire. For Prop-Joe to maneuver through that under-world the way that he did by manipulating ALL of the major players in order to benefit himself, takes a high level of intelligence to a point where his instincts borders clairvoyance. If Prop-Joe would’ve kept the schematic of being cerebral in place, he would’ve cut his losses with Cheese, who eventually was the sole reason for his downfall, though of course Marlo (another character who’s intellect gets downplayed tremendously) had a hand in it as well.

      I think Marlo and Avon had him beat on pure instinct. Omar to me was the smartest on the whole show, then Daniels/Freemon. Prop was smarter than most of the other smart characters other than maybe Levy and The Greek but his inability to read Marlo correct just like String takes him down. They both made the same mistake and it got them killed.

    What an amazing show. I loved the character Prop Joe - such a rich character in a show full of rich characters. Omar, Stringer, Avon, Bodie, McNulty, Bunk, Jay, etc. - you could make a list as long as your arm. Any one of those characters is more real than probably the single-most real character on any other show.
    Great video, and I appreciated your insights on Joe, I think they are 100% correct.

  • @jamaalmoses8821
    @jamaalmoses8821 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Stringer lacked empathy because he has no family..he seems like he learned lessons about the game later than Wee Bey and Avon..hence why they were alive in Season 5,and not him.

    • @thedoveston6781
      @thedoveston6781 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good point. It never actually occured to me that Bell’s family history is never mentioned. I’m guessing the Barkdales raised him as one of their own as he and Avon were best friends. Would explain why Avon was #1 and Stringer was #2. Stringer never struck me as the kind of person to submit to authority.

    Joe kept everybody afloat and moving along far longer than they would've. Helped Omar get a shot he would've never gotten against Avon, helped Stringer and Avon keep their money coming in when they were vulnerable with his good dope. Kept about 4 people in business with the co-op when they were displaced by development, kept Cheese alive long enough to be his undoing and basically gave the crown to Marlo through his coaching.
    Dude was the only dude that the Greeks liked even though they didn't care about the street. His character gets better with every watch. Dude was old school and you can tell by his 'mistakes' or soft moments that they were due to him following a code of family first and could even see someone like Marlo in a fatherly way. When he told Marlo he saw him as a son he wasn't lying, which is why Marlo didn't call him a liar and pointed out that he wasn't mean to play the son acknowledging that Joe did shit for him he didn't do for anyone else.
    He was also a master manipulator and was willier than a fox. Dude is the uncle everybody needs. Fuck Cheese

      his business relies on territory. He was likening the drug trade to shoe stores or Starbucks, but his business takes corners by force. And that always leads to beef. Stringer was the one who put essentially one hired gun against another (Omar vs Brother) and screwed Avon over in the process.

    Joe abided by the 48 laws of power… and he played his position to the T his only mess up was not getting rid of Marlo before he got too powerful and before he had no use for joe anymore.
