    Levi was the biggest gangster on the show.
    He played both sides of the game. Got Herc to be his running boy, laughed in Stringer's faced after he got played by Clay Davis, made a ton of money while never touching a G pack, shooting a pistol, standing on a block, running from police, etc.
    He got paid enormous amounts of money from those who DID do those things. All rewards with none of the risks. Just to make it home to enjoy his wife's brisket.

  • @compromisedssh
    @compromisedssh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +222

    You really sold Levy short when you said he "only" won D'Angelo's case. Getting Marlo's case dismissed took a lot of mental chess playing to pull off. He was being blackmailed. Instead of caving in, he called Rhonda's bluff and looked out for his client. He also managed to keep Stringer out of jail and get Avon a light sentence (that he was able to get heavily reduced) when the police and district attorneys knew they were behind the killing of a witness as well as being the biggest kingpins in town. When Kima got shot, he got Savino charged with defrauding a drug dealer. He also managed to communicate threats to Orlando when he was in county jail. The man isn't a lawyer. He's a magician.

    • @AMansWorldPodcast
      @AMansWorldPodcast  2 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      I feel you but it’s true. Because every case you just named was the result of a plea bargain. I gave him props for his negotiation skills, but it was only deangelos case that he beat in trial. Which is much more impressive. Avon and marlo both have people 100% willing to fall for them, so levy’s job is not as difficult as you think.

    • @compromisedssh
      @compromisedssh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@AMansWorldPodcast Agree to disagree, I guess. I think keeping the cases out of the courtroom in the first place is more impressive than winning a trial-- especially in the cases I mentioned. Don't get me wrong. I like your videos a lot. I just found your channel and I can tell that I've finally found someone who has seen the Wire as many times as I have.

    • @compromisedssh

      @@AMansWorldPodcast hey I just wanted to follow up. Someone just liked my comment so I got a notification and I re-read your answer. You're right that Avon and Marlo both have people willing to take charges for them (most of the time). That was a good point. They did have Marlo dead to rights though. Marlo got lucky because McNulty built the case on dirty evidence. I'm still not all that impressed with Billy Murphy. It's not like he's an amazing legal mind. He just turned Clay Davis (the most blatantly corrupt politician in the show) into a cause that the jurors would get behind. He knew how to play to the crowd-- DEFINITELY. He did a good job. I just still think you're selling Levy short lol. Like I said, nothing but love. Your videos are great and I love your analysis.

    In the Wire, the city of Baltimore is riddled with corruption from top to bottom, in every institution and down to the man on the street. Baltimore is the real villain of the show. Levy is a symptom, like Marlo, Avon, Burrell, Valchek, Clay Davis, Royce and Carcetti. The city is terminally I’ll with corruption, moral laziness, dishonesty and careerism. Cops who try to do good police work get punished for it. Gangsters trying to ply their trade with anything resembling a moral compass end up dead. Guys like Levy known this and become part of the rotten system not because they are necessarily bad people but because the system itself is bad.

    I just watched the scene where DeAngelo told Wallace to go back to school, and D told Wallace how he also had a good heart. You should do a video about how Wallace and DeAngelo were just alike. Kind of seemed like DeAngelo was trying to save Wallace from what he was going through. Like he was telling Wallace to do what he wanted to do but his mom, and uncle got in the way. Remember how Avon at the family barbeque asked D's BM to "give me my little soldier", when he asked to hold D'd baby boy. Wallace and DeAngelo were basically the same person. Both had the same outcome too. Both ordered by the same person. Crazy.

      I feel what you saying bro,but the only thing deangelo and Wallace got in common is that they weren’t built to be in the game in the first place and they both snitched🤷🏿‍♂️. And Dee was only trying to save Wallace because he knew Avon and stringer were looking for him. Otherwise the subject of going back to school would’ve never came up

    Levy was the biggest pimp in baltimore. While he was a master negotiatior he was exactly what he accused Omar of being: ammoral. Being in the profession he is does require an appropriate amount of ammorality and this is what made him good at what he did. The ability to seperate his own personal feelings for the benefit of his client. One thing I liked about The Wire was the realism. Many people don't know that its estimated that 90 to 95 percent of state and federal cases in the United States end in a plea deal. Most people don't have the money or assets to be able to afford a trial. Couple that with the fear of losing and getting the higher sentence and you can see why this is the case. Levy shined behind the scenes but may have not been the best trial attorney like you mentioned. These facts is what makes having a code of honor so important. Very rarely do you see a Wee Bey take accountability and stay solid while facing the amount of time he did. Like you mentoned attorneys, prosecutors, and the entire court system in general rely on your fear and desperation in order to get convictions.
    Oh and nice touch with explaining the 8th commandment with the original Hebrew. Shalom.

    Levy was my favorite character in the whole damn show. Dude was about his bread and they ended up doing him dirt by writing him into a corner that he had to become a weasel in order to get out of. Feel like he’d had been better than to get caught up on a wire. Dude knew they were using wires to investigate Avon, so he’d know what he could and couldn’t say. They essentially had to dumb down his character in order to get him caught up and that didn’t vibe well w/ me

    One of the things I appreciate about your podcast sir is that you understand as not enough people in any life station do that attempting to understand another’s flaws and shortcomings doesn’t mean you have to excuse them. As an autistic individual who firmly believes that genuine efforts to reach out require the right balance between challenge and empathy, I have seen no other podcast on the Wire that comes as close to matching that balance as yours sir. I may not share your god (even for my interest in Brother Mouzone which I wrote about in a comment to you that might have been overlong) but I know well enough that even differing foundations have room for common ground. I’m sorry for your recent health issues and hope we will see you again here soon.

    Internet, here's how you know this channel is next level: he catches the "gonif' reference and breaks it down. It's a throwaway line, used to add texture to Levy, a Jewish character, showing him as a Yiddish speaker. Outside my tribe, I would have expected the line to just fly over the head of a viewer, but note, A Man's World catches it, and KNOWS not just the meaning of the word, but the connotations of its usage. Bravo!

    Omar is the reflection of Levy.
    Levy didn't understand Omar but the funny thing is Omar saw where Levy was weak. So while Levy thought he had Omar down and out Omar simply reflected that back on Levy which completely broke his composure.
    Levy probably didn't expect Omar to keep his composure and reflect back at him so he lets his mask down. Omar lives high pressure situation I'm which he keeps composure so seeing Levy start to get worked Omar just figured "that's your weakness, that's why you're so worked up at me".
    Omar did probably feel there's something immoral in his rip and run approach so he was initially taken aback but he's able to recover and reflect back in court as good as Levy despite no ligation training.

    I love how this show handles liminal space. Characters that have one foot in the door and one out. This video really captures that well. There's other examples - Stringer (businessman or druglord), Omar (hero or villain), etc. It's juxtaposed against the overarching themes of future and past. New school or OG.
    Love your work, my man! Your own life experience adds so much to your analysis and shows just how accurate and authentic The Wire is.

      I love that about this show as well, but I'm not sure I see it as putting the characters in liminal space so much as giving them depth and texture. That's really rare anymore... cops are always squeaky clean good guys and the robbers are always deceitful and honor-less. Boils down to lazy writing, and targeting their show for people who are playing candy crush on th3eir phones while watching.
      Simon (et al) didn't write for those people, he wrote for viewers that are willing to invest their attention and time into his stories, and in return they got complex characters with contradictions... Cops with skeletons in their closets (Lt Daniels) and Bad Guys with generous hearts (Avon, Marlo, Spiros). Put a character like that into CSI or Law and Order and you'd confuse the sh!t out of every housewife in America, LOL.

    Levy in some ways was also the main shot caller for some of the high level executions from Barksdale's crew like 2 witnesses of the court and such.
    Hope you are doing well now. Recover up soon.

    This is an awesome interpretative video essay. Reminds me of why Don Corleone made sure Tom Hagen went to law school "a lawyer can steal more in one hour than 100 men with guns." Both excellent interpretations of how much of a role that court officials can have in making or breaking the "System."
