    As a person who is interested in public transportation, I would say that Korea has a very unique system. I've only taken the Seoul subway once, but I know they have a huge network. Almost everywhere in the Seoul metropolitan area is included in the network. Their technology has also been crazy: Hyundai Rotem supplies trains for the Seoul Metro, which they supply not only to developing countries like Thailand, the Philippines, and Taiwan, but also to countries like the U.S. and Australia.

    I recommend you to ride an electric bicycle in the Han River. It takes 20 minutes from Yeouido to Gangnam, and the scenery is much better than walking. You are very astute about your observation of Christians in Korea. Missionaries have had a lot of impact on Korea. A friend of mine from Texas found a statistic about Koreans having one of the highest conversion rates to Christianity in the world. Almost all Koreans in Canada are Christian and I know many Korean Americans fall in the same category.
    Regarding fashion they are years ahead of North Americans (skincare, makeup, and technology too for that matter). Koreans care how they look. I'm sure I would feel a plain Jane if I visited there today. 🤣

    In most restaurants or bars, they usually sell regular soju because it’s the most popular. If you want to buy it, you can find it at large supermarkets like E-Mart or Homeplus.
    If you want to see people in their natural, unadorned state, visit neighborhoods with a lot of single-person apartments late at night. At the 24-hour convenience stores, you might see people coming in wearing slippers, caps, and pajamas. 😂 Life is the same everywhere!
    The first missionaries to Korea who established schools and hospitals were from the United States and Europe. Beyond just spreading religion, they dedicated themselves to education and healthcare. We are grateful to those who committed themselves to these causes. Many of the major hospitals and schools in Korea were originally founded as mission schools and by missionaries.

    There are some flavours of soju, but those are more for people who can't drink bitter alcohol in Korea. It is very common to mix soju with Korean beer(Cass etc.) to make So-Mec and that is the dominating soju variation in Korea which is accepted and enjoyed by the locals. It's kind of like you don't get cherry flavoured beers in local pubs in UK maybe?

    There was a time when various flavors of soju were sold as a trend, but now people are back to traditional soju so there is no variety (they sell various fruit soju at marts though).

    You guys are big fans for soju 😃
    Next time how about trying "traditional soju" which is not diluted at all.
    The renowned one, which is still great, in the blue/green bottle is acutally a manufactured one.
    But this "traditional soju" has a totally different and deeper flavor.
    Here are some recommendations.

    "MUN-BAE-JU"

    Yes, you are right of Korean Soju and most of local shops sell only classical one, which has no flavor at all. Actually, Soju with various flavors had been popular many years ago but the popularity soon fell out of favour and most of Koreans came to like the classical one with no flavor again except of very small number of women. Instead of flavor of Soju, Korean people show interest in low alcohol content (before about 25% but now around 16~17% only) or zero sugar one because of health-related concern in these days. Anyway, thanks so much for your good effort to understand other people's culture and hope you can have more affection for Korean culture.

  • @junjun671
    @junjun671 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Ok so, in my opinion, when it comes to soju, I think I can give a clearer answer than most people here. For Koreans, soju is like vodka in Russia. Koreans usually drink plain soju, similar to Vodka for Russian people. flavored version might be weird for most people here tho. It might be hard to find now, but there used to be products like plum extract product that you could mix with soju. However, they're probably discontinued. When I was a freshman in college, there was a brief trend of mixing lemon juice or syrup with soju at bars, and people called it 과일소주(fruit soju) but mostly only women drank it. Generally, people just drank plain soju. Cuz that's what soju is! Sometimes when traveling abroad, even as a Korean, I've come across soju with flavors I've never seen before. That's because soju companies focus on selling flavored soju for export since it sells better overseas than plain soju. Apart from grape-flavored soju, it's rare for me to see anything other than plain soju at convenience stores. Lastly, a fact that even Koreans often overlook is that the soju we commonly see in blue bottles at convenience stores or restaurants is actually fake soju. Real genuine soju has an alcohol content similar to vodka or gin, over 40%. Basically, Soju is essentially a distilled spirit like Gin. The common soju we see is actually made with cheap tapioca starch (tapioca isn't even grown in Korea) to make alcohol and then diluted with water. Real soju is made with sweet potato starch with special rice and has a much higher alcohol content. Plus, it's a lot more expensive than the blue bottle convenient store soju. Traditional soju is famous for being made in the Andong region, so Koreans often call it Andong soju. If you get the chance to visit Korea again, I highly recommend visiting Andong. Oh, and there's an American who learned to distill soju in Andong, and he created a soju distillery in NYC and made his own soju called TOKKI. It's gained a lot of attention in Korea for its high quality. Even though it's made by an American, it's classified as traditional soju and has even been exported back to Korea. There's also news that they've started distilling it in Korea! TOKKI soju is real soju, so be sure to try it out!

    • @junjun671
      @junjun671 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you take a look at the back of a bottle of soju, you might notice it's classified as dilution-style soju(희석식소주), which legally makes it closer to a liqueur. Essentially, it's made by distilling cheap tapioca starch, then diluting the resulting distillate with water and adding sugar and other synthetic sweeteners. Real soju, on the other hand, is simply classified as distilled spirits(증류주) under the liquor laws.

    I also think raw beef Bibimbap(Jinju(-style) Bibimbap) is better than regular or Jeonju-style bibimbap.
    And there are many different flavors of soju but Korean people rarely drinks flavored soju. Because It feels artificial flavor. Rather, drinks other soju. like 처음처럼(2nd popular soju) or local soju(대선, 한라산, 좋은데이, 맛있는 참, 잎새주 etc) or 증류식 소주(Recently, there are yet small movements of recovering ORIGINAL soju culture in Korea. 희석식 소주 products like 참이슬, 처음처럼 are a kind of mass-targeting soju.).

    To boast a bit more, Korea is known for its safety. You can walk around late at night or even in the early morning without risk. There are also stores that stay open late and 24-hour gas stations and convenience stores. Additionally, Korea has fast internet and efficient administrative processes. I live in the United States, and there’s a notable difference in the speed of processing things like passport issuance. As for healthcare, you don’t need to book appointments far in advance or wait for long periods like in the U.S.; you can just walk into a local clinic. You can also get an eye test and glasses made within an hour (20-30min) by just a walk-in. Anyway, welcome!
