    ARRI has been making great digital cameras since 2010. Canon is finally catching up. There was no Canon C200 shooting RAW video in 2010. ARRI still has a very organic look to it. Once Canon enters the 8K arena for under 10k, it'll have Red and ARRI by the collar. Some film makers really want that room to reframe the shot and to stabilize the shot in post production. It's going to happen within 10 years. Great video. This is a good review. It's fair. Both companies have excellent colour science.

    I love that when exposed correctly the C200 can have a similar image to the ARRI. I'm wondering if the dynamic range difference is due to the sensors, or due to Canon's RAW light is not being entirely true RAW. Great job!

      Each bit can only capture 1 stop of dynamic range so in reality the 12 bit craw can only capture 12 full stops of data. The LOG format attempts to squeeze 16 bits of linear into 12 bits, but if you want to color grade heavily RED is still your choice

      Mike Honcho right, but you can match cameras colors in post and he has made a lut to match to Sony A7iii with his Canon C200. Colors are such a personal preference and get edited depending on the feel people are going for so I don’t understand the hate of the Sony colors. Sure they aren’t Canon or Fuji, but I think they did a good job with the colors out of the A7iii and A6400. At the end of the day most people end up tweaking the colors in post so I just don’t understand I guess, but I guess people need to hate on something from Sony because they are doing a lot of things right.

  • @cmnewcombe
    @cmnewcombe 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great to see the comparison - I intercut C300 II footage with ALEXA quite often, and it’s amazing how close you can get them. Canon really do have some of the best colour in the business.
    I would however like to point out a few things mentioned / not mentioned in your comparison which I think are important when asking the question “why is the Mini so much more expensive” as I have watched a few of these comparison videos now:
    - The Mini is referred to as a 2.8K camera both in this video and the subsequent colouring link. The Mini actually has a 3.4K sensor - it uses 2.8K when shooting in HD and 2K, 3.2K when shooting 3.2K or up-ressed UHD ProRes, and 3.4K when shooting Open Gate. It can also display what *isn’t* being recorded when not in Open Gate, allowing you to frame out lighting stands and mic booms easily.
    - The Mini sensor is larger than the C200 (28.25mm x 18.17mm compared with 24.6mm x 13.8mm) allowing it to use anamorphic lenses with no cropping (unlike the RED for example). It also has a higher pixel pitch (8.25μm v 6.4µm) - essentially ‘bigger’ photosites - resulting in cleaner images and better low light performance.
    - The Mini records ARRIRAW internally, which is an uncompressed RAW codec unlike pretty much everything else out there. This allows for tack-sharp green screen keys.
    - The Mini is able to record 200fps ProRes 4444 with no loss of quality and no sensor cropping at HD / 2K. Phantoms aside, this is almost entirely unique to the AMIRA and Mini cameras. I shoot a lot of food and we are constantly changing frame rates depending on the ingredient, and not having to change camera position due to cropping, or lose fidelity in the image is fantastic. On a side note it also changes frame rates instantly with a simple push of a button.
    - The mount can be swapped from PL to EF in about 60 seconds - no need to send it off to the factory.
    - The Mini effectively has an ARRI UMC built into it - allowing control of lenses through a wireless focus unit - you just need to plug the motor into the LBUS on the PL mount. That’s a $5K piece of equipment thrown in right there!
    - In the other grading video the EVF is mentioned as being subpar. I am going to have to contest that - have you ever used the viewfinder that comes with an F5/F55/FS7, or a RED? The ARRI EVF is clearly the best 1st party EVF on the market! Also nobody wants to use a big touchscreen outside in bright daylight :P
    There are cameras out there with *some* of the features above, but to have ALL of them in one, reliable, precision-engineered package - that’s the reason you pay so much for ARRI. That, and the fantastic image of course!

    • @mondobytes
      @mondobytes  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Funny you say that because that's how film is. You get more dynamic range with film but in Hollywood it's a trade-off for the convenience and cost. I feel that's the same here, I'd rather trade a few stops for cheaper, smaller and lighter form factor.

  • @scottsimmons6814
    @scottsimmons6814 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice to see this comparison, but I think you are looking at two completely different markets. Why not compare it to the Canon EOS C700 FF? The C700 has a far superior dynamic range to the C200.. Also ProResRAW support is becoming an issue where you can very easily over/under expose and recover in edit.

  • @ZenGeekDad
    @ZenGeekDad 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    You skipped explaining WHY (/how) the ARRI can better recover over/under exposure. That's a classic bit depth issue. The latest C200 records in up to 12 bit. ARRI exceeds that at 16 bit (fudged into 12-bit somehow). That's 16 times the levels, to retain variations in luminance when your subject's lighting goes to either extreme. This extra recovery ability is stupid-familiar to every photographer who shoots in RAW. I notice you show the +2EV ARRI but not the +2EV C200, instead going right to the -4EV C200, which looks a little flat, *but* for a fair comparison, you *should* have graded that to that same luminance distribution (contrast, etc.) as you did the ARRI, and then judge the IQ on things like posterization & banding. I'm actually quite impressed with the IQ from the C200's -4EV footage, but would like very much to have seen the results at +4EV too.

I can only suggest for big budget movies ARRI can handle difficult situation in cinematic scenes ,color science and depth is more real,the bigger sensor size can provide the moving image more real,the dynamic range is beyond comparison ,the rental is pretty ok .on the other hand for TH-cam video or small tv serial canon system is fine. It depends what you want to produce. lastly you can choose some more interesting topic to run your TH-cam channel.views are personal

    I grabbed some footage online from the two, and Realized that Chromatic aberration on c200 is more apparent specially at spot where there are repetitive patterns such as plants leaves, water reflection from sunlight, also there are some visible aliasing artifacts when its not in 100%focus and when exposure plays a big part and its pretty hard to do some intense color grading on c200 in davinci resolve, it produced some unwanted noise, specially on shot that were really underexposed or overexposed, on the other hand alexa does fine even if you boost contrast and exposure like crazy, you can play with it like crazy and can achieved the look you want no matter what without destroying it, well just my 2 cents as a noob colourist. hehe

    The Arri alexa footages are always easier for the colorist to processing.And time is money,especially when a film has thousands of shots.
    For the individuals,Arii Alexa is way more expensive than C200,because $75000 is a lot of money.

    Man you know, up until the middle of the vid, I preferred the c200 over the Alexa most of the times which is a hell of a thing to say given that price gap, but when the extreme stuff kicks in there's just no comparison.

    Very nice piece, particularly the dynamic range compare. More interesting (to me) would be Ursa Mini Pro/4.6K vs Alexa. Blackmagic is claiming 15 stops. And for $5K.

    What ISO are you using for the dynamic range test - it's known that the low ISOs will clip the highlight details. You waveform looks very familiar - as you won't be able to expose anything higher than about IRE 80 at ISO100

    And you forgot to mention, even in ideal conditions, comparison between both may appear similar, but the discerning eye like mine sees that the Canon is much sharper, which isn't necessarily what you want especially for cinematic-style shoots. The ARRI blends the skin tones better, making the beautiful model you hired (where the heck do you find an actor that beautiful!) even more beautiful. I can almost always spot the ARRI when compared to another camera solely based on sharpness or detail, as well as dynamic range. It's even better than the Red, as shown in Potato Jet's comparison between the ARRI and Red.
    But heck, I'll take a Canon for my business any day! I heard the C300 is even better than the 200.

    When viewing in motion, for some reason the C200 looks a little flatter and the Arri looks more three-dimensional, no idea why, I guess it is a result of many tiny differences.

  • @ryankanefitzgerald

    The real thing here is that REC709 basically removes color information to meet broadcast standards. I don't know anyone who drops a REC709 correction LUT on the footgate. I know some drop on a film mimic lut but if not, you'd do a basic color correct then, if you wanted a creative lut, drop one on. Color correction is one of the MOST OVERLOOKED and UNDERRATED processes in a "digital negative" workflow. So by dropping a rec709 on it out of the gate, you are losing a ton of dynamic range. I've read that the original REC709 spec only allows for about 5-7 stops of dynamic range (depends on the source). Now consider the Arri Alexa has 14+ stops of dynamic range. You just dwindled the camera's capability to 1/3 of its total abilities. Now, Cannon claims the C200 gets 13 stops but I think you can tell from your own test where it falls short.
    C200 is a great camera but it's no Arri Alexa. Will anyone watching an amazing story told using a C200 notice any difference let alone care if you shot an Arri Alexa instead? I'd bet no. I'd almost guarantee it.
    Cool review.

    Maybe it's just the lower resolution making the image slightly soft or something, but it almost looks like the Arri is somehow smoothing the skin, especially on India. But honestly, I would have a tough time telling them apart if they weren't literally side-by-side.

    Very cool! But, what about a Sony venice?

  • @darksword1
    @darksword1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd like to see a Venice vs Arri Alexa comparison. The Arri Alexa has a Dynamic range advantage over all other cameras because it amplifies the analog sensor data into two different signals. One "low" and one "normal". the "low" is what gives the Alexa an advantage in highlights. And then the two signals are merged into one final signal that has a larger combined dynamic range than what each signal had. It's like taking two exposures to form a HDR picture, sort of. All other cameras do not do this, probably because this processing is patented by Arri. Cameras like the Panasonic Varicam do something similar but only one signal at a time, either low or high. The Arri Alexa is also only 2.8K vs 4k for something like a C200. That's 30% larger photosites. So all of these reasons form the basis for why the Arri Alexa is THE STANDARD in cinema. The widest dynamic range and great color.

  • @eformance
    @eformance 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    What codec were you using for the C200 and ARRI? AFAIK the ARRI is a 16bit raw, was the C200 RAW too? The C200 produces 10 or 12bit RAW, 2 stops of under or over exposure is hard at 10bits and a little less challenging with 12bits of color depth. At 16bits I'm not surprised that 4 stops is recoverable, since on a 5D2 at 14bits 2 stops under isn't terribly challenging. When shooting with my 5D2 I try to expose under by at least a stop in bright environments, since with ~11stops of DR you only have 2 stops above and 9 stops below the optimal exposure. By underexposing 1 or 2 stops you are gaining about 2 stops of headroom to recover highlights, without totally losing your shadows. Yes the ARRI is a phenomenal camera, but if you designed some tests that were a little less biased towards the ARRIs 16bit color depth, the C200 will look pretty good.

  • @AdamKuzniar
    @AdamKuzniar 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I see what you mean about the highlights being blown out, but... don't most people normally avoid shots like that in the first place? Doesn't seem to be worth the extra price for most people-- unless you're renting and can afford the bit extra for the rental...?

    C200 you need to treat and expose as film stock, where Alexa surpasses film DR. Buy lighting and control exposure like shooting film and C200 will do you well. Oh you can buy low hour use C200 for 1900 or less. Then buy illumination with the savings.

  • @momchilminkov5722
    @momchilminkov5722 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Well, it's logical. It's like that in every field. Take an athlete for example. I guy who is running the 100m sprint in 11.0 seconds is next to nobody among the pros. There are hundreds, if not thousands like him. "Just" 10% faster is 10.0 seconds. That is fast enough to qualify for the medal run at the Olympics, among the top 8 in the world. And the professionalism, talent, effort, money and time spent to obtain these "only" 10% are like the difference between a $7500 camera and a $75'000 camera. All the top pros in cinema industry use this Arri thing for a reason. And it's not only about the DR. If you look at the footage of the black girl with the blue eyes, you can see right away Arri is better. It made her look like a movie star. While the Canon, seemingly sharper, was exposing every imperfection in her skin.

    C200 is great camera BUTT its ia not a 98% match bot even a 90% percent match may be 80 or 85 at best, one cant tell due to YT compression but the Color on c200 is flatter and less rich the gradients on the Alexa is better ofc. This choice of compromise over quality should be treated as the creators preference only.

    In Daylight there’s no comparison, the Alexa shows better colors and greater DR. I’m going to buy a Canon C200 most likely, because that’s what I can afford, but I’ll only use it for personal work or small paying shoots. If I’m going to shoot a Tv Series or a Feature film, I’ll use an Alexa or a Red Camera, like I always do. This cameras are not competing with each other.

  • @frederickreed4604

    Great Item. The C200 is only 8 bit so the C log footage is always going to be compromised. But if you can learn how to properly expose a shot, you are away and it looks great. I would like to think that most people on a film set with an Arri can do this and may even have a meter in their bag just in case !

    So, the real difference is the dynamic range.
    That would make me wonder how the Alexa would compare to a full-frame beast like the Sony a7S III or Panasonic S1H, which are actually less expensive than the C200. You could try a Sony FX6 or FX9 or a Canon C500 if you want more of an apples-to-apples comparison.

    i don't know, maybe it's just me. it seems that arri has that feel, it has that film imperfection not so digital-ish.and when it comes into colour grading session,arri would be the easiest thing to start with.
