Scotty Kilmer Greetings from brazil Scotty. I’ll make a video of my Fiat Palio for you some day. Thanks for the tips always, love your content!
What do you think about the toyota rav 4? I heard that they are not reliable as the other toyota cars...
Do you have any how to videos on how to fix common issues with Toyota brand vehicles?
Ey Scotty I got 2010 4.0 v6 are they very reliable and I'm having trouble with the radio keeps clicking and can't listen to music replace it 3 times no avail just got the car 1 week ago what could be wrong with radio system
Wait.. so for the Ford. Did you say to get the 6cylinder one or the V8?
they have a saying in australia, if you want to go out in the outback, ya take a landrover, if ya yanna come back, take a toyota
I have a Toyota 4runner 2004 this vehicle will leave you there with your landrover..... just rotted out....
myetey areewwe everyone is Australia generally is speaking of land cruisers and the hilux. 4runners are cute tho
lol, the heliux (tacoma in usa) and other toyota variations are popular anywhere people put them through tough and challenging conditions. Australia is truly a wild west place due to it's size.
@@oregonnich na bro the Hilux is a totally different animal if you go south of the border no one wants Tacoma's because they have a bad reputation....and also it's almost impossible to import a Hilux to the USA (mostly because of emmisions and what not) but just do a Google search and you'll see the difference...oh and they get like 40mpg which makes me wonder wtf is USA doing wrong lol
Landrovers are made by Ford, so no wonder.

Have had my Chevy for 17 years...work truck silverado....140k miles original owner. My mechanic said its great shape.
I pretty much loath how the recent f150s look up until 2018.
So trying to find one that’s wayy too old like 1990-97 is difficult.
If there is a video of him explaining which years are best some one send the link.
Joel I see 90s F-150s in my area all the time in Marketplace
"Terrorist Approved" Scotty this is why I listen to your advise most of the time.

I have been driving my 2005 GMC sierra 4.3 v8 vortec for 9 years. Bought at 125,000 miles for $5,500 now has 268,000 miles. Still runs like a super beast & the underhood design has the do it yourselfers in mind.
This is input that I like to read. Used market is huge right now when a new Tacoma is more 45k. Idk where this 29k number comes from there isn’t a dealership within 500miles of me that sells Tacoma base models even under 35k

Is it a triton v8? I hear the tritons throw spark plugs like nobody’s business. I borrowed an expedition from my dad while my wife’s car was broke and we ended up spending more money on the Ford than what it cost to fix my wife’s car. Has a lot of power though.
That's hilarious. I like it.

Pure fucking genius.
I’m a proud owner of a 1997 ford ranger with the 2.3L 5 speed manual... 309,000 miles on it and it still runs like a tank 🤘🏻
My husband has a 99 Ford Ranger he will not part with. He drives it to work and back, plus he has the F 150 Ford Platinum that is his big baby.
2.3 was great mtr
I had a black 1993 Ranger Splash with red cloth seats and a 5spd. The only vehicle I regret getting rid of. Loved that truck..
I had a 2000 Ranger with the 2.3 4 cylinder in a 2003 Ford Ranger edge with a 3 liter V6 both are damn good trucks, happy Tacoma owner now
Love my ranger but I want a f150
My grandpa has a Tacoma from 97’ and that thing has been running well since he got it. Love that thing so much, I’d buy a Tacoma over anything
As a used auto rebuilder and dealer for the past 23 years , my # 1 pick is Toyota Tundra . We rebuilt and sold hundreds of trucks and there is nothing that comes close to the Tundra in durability . Very solid and almost trouble free truck and a pease of mind. Never had a Customer in the past 15 years with any mechanical issues with a Tundra . The worst truck is Titan, almost every truck had multiple issues . The second best truck is Tacoma . Only one truck that had transmission problem out of over 120 sold . # 3 is the Silverado, and # 4 is RAM and F150 5.4L. These trucks are very hot sellers but they require you to leave your truck at the mechanic shop for long time to fix problems that don’t happen in Toyota trucks.
Thank you for sharing CK!!
Thank you fir your input. Any thoughts on which Silverado’s to stay away from?
@@19993gt The Silverado 1500 is a good truck for everyday use but not for construction work and pulling heavy equipment ! The Silverado 2500 is more reliable.
Totally true, there's no way an F-150 is a more reliable truck than a Tundra or Tacoma.

I grew with Scotty on the old 1970-1980s Toyota pickups that terrorists drive in Iraq and Afghanistan. I had two deployments to Iraq and can tell you the U.S. military trucks would be broken all of the time. The Toyota's with .50 cal machine guns or mortars in the pickup bed were virtually indestructible.

@@Fifthcell We must have got a lemon. In 1 yr into owning a 2004, the repairs are:
replaced failed evap
replaced failed distributor (a "won't start")
bad ABS sensors fixed (evidently was a bad/DIY mechanic prior to us owning)
engine oil pressure failed - $4.5k to replace the whole damn engine!
1997 Tacoma 4x4 ..V6...manual 240k ..engine compartment looks like it came right off the factory line. Had headers, better exhaust and k&n installed back in 2001. Still runs very strong. No internal work ever. Reg maintenance and replaced the clutch, water pump, timing belt. Replaced the undercarriage bushings with better urethane ones and install beilsstein shocks. Corners like a civic. Had to replace the air conditioning compressor which at the first fan setting will freeze you out of the truck. Replaced the fuel pump at 220k just because. Love this truck. New Ford Ranger 4cyl turbo and toooo expensive no thanks. Have a 94 Ranger 245000 miles said I'm gonna keep till the wheels fall off but it just keeps on going, love the truck.
If it ain't broke don't fix it. Those Rangers are good trucks. The only issue I had was my feet are size 14 and hitting the clutch was the park brake pedal was in the way.
Yeah, my 2005 Ford Ranger has 250,000 miles and it runs like a champion.
I consistently see Rangers for sell in my area with 350,000 miles.
I had a 97 that ran great. It failed emissions test and I got pissed and sold it. Big mistake I should have just had it repaired. It never left me stranded. I was so excited to hear Ford was bringing back the ranger, then I saw only one engine choice and one transmission choice and the price. I’ll just keep my 93 Toyota as long as I can.

The Ford Ranger is damn near immortal, especially the 90s Rangers. You simply cannot kill them (believe me I’ve tried).
In Taiwan, I saw the newer Ford Ranger everywhere. I am biased to Toyota but the 2018 Ford Ranger looked pretty sweet.
Justin Lui Saw a decked out one at a dealership. $38,000 for a little truck? Time we all get together and boycott boats, trucks, cars, and houses. Inflation ain’t around, and all this stuff is priced thru the roof, and us dummies keep going Into debt deeper and deeper..... just realized, your in Taiwan. Bet the prices are just as asinine there also. ( from U. S.).

@@ronleigh4061 Actually the Ranger and Mazda B-2300/B-3000 were pretty much the same truck.
Great advice scotty! I just replaced my 2000 frontier with a 2013 frontier. My 2000 is still going strong. Regular maintenance and 200k miles it will serve its new owner for an easy 100k more. Good truck. Best Value.
I Dailey my 94 gmc sierra and it has 416 thousand miles. Good truck
I really wish they had small trucks still like the old s10s and stuff now they got the Colorado and there huge I just miss the 90s truck scene
I am keeping my 2000 S10 ZR2 pickup. Easy to fix when it needs it and parts are cheap and plentiful.
Dude I agree. I had a Ranger that I sold last year. Was a great reliable truck. Although I drive a huge truck now, it would be nice in the future to have a small truck like the S-10 or Ranger to haul stuff around on the weekends.
my 91 S10 wasn''t the best, bad computer and leaky gas tank, done with chevy
My dad had a 1991 Chevy Blazer S10
My 93 s10 still running. Its ugly as sin but has proven to be a mostly reliable and easy to work on truck. Especially considering I paid $900 for it 12 years ago!!!!
Almost any truck will last and serve you well as long as you take care of it. I have a 2002 Ram and 264,000 miles later the original v8 and transmission are still going strong!
I bought an 01 ram a few years ago and I love it. Sure, I've replaced some things. What I love is how simple and mechanical everything is. Parts are easy to find and cheap.

Thats what i say
I’m still stuck with Toyota Tacoma 2005 and already 300 thousand miles and the dealer charged the chasis and paint body for free, and the only problem is it’s never dies,
Scotty really knows his stuff, mentioning the problems with the retainers on Toyota trucks. Common problem.
I have always loved the old Rangers - bought an ‘09 brand new with the intent of keeping it forever! The thing I love about it the most is it’s basic simplicity - no high tech gizmos to break down just as the warranty expires and drive you nuts as you’re driving down the road!
Rangers have great engines but the frames often rust and crack before the engine goes.
My absolute favorite trucks ever are the 1970-1986 Ford F-150s and F-250s. My mom even had a couple in the past, so I've got a bit of a soft spot for them.
I guess almost all of us younger folks won't have the HIGH ENERGY as much as this YOUNG MAN (SCOT) when we get to his age. Love it!!
Ford should bring back the good ole straight six 300.
I agree, had a friend who converted one to a turbo diesel for a pulling tractor
Nah bring bck the 350
My buddy had one in his '95 F150
I plan on buying one this summer! I can find for for not even $1000 and just fix some of the stuff.
That's not gonna happen they were well too good. Same reason they changed the 5.0 in the mustang starting in 96 cause the 5.0 would not blow. Me and a couple of buddies tried to blow ours up so we had an excuse to buy the GT40 crate motors and put in them. Drained the oil and redlined them all day and night. Still ran perfect.
Ranger Nation where y'all at? Love my old 4.0 pushrod 5 speed manual 4x4. 300k miles and it's still going.
The42car 2011 4.0 5spd 4x4 113k and only the passenger wheel bearing needing repair.
Ford Ranger...had head gasket issues with both my 1994 and 2000. leaf spring shackles in the back busted loose on both trucks and that was not an inexpensive fix. The rear section of the frame then broke after having the leaf spring shackles repaired...busted frame ended it for the 2000. Had a rebuilt Jasper Engine put in the 2000 after a valve went bad and the Jasper engine had a valve go bad also, fortunately was still under warranty. Lot of nagging little issue with the 2000. Bottom line, not impressed with reliability of either of my Rangers.
Seriously looking at a 2010 Ford Ranger worth it?
@@itsyaboimat2393 what engine is in it?
Used to work for state parks, we had frontiers, ford rangers, and 2 sonoma/s10. The frontier got hit by a falling tree, beat up, and ran good, the 2wd turned like a school bus,the 4x4 though was great. The ranger was solid build and you can go up narrow logging roads with 4x4 no problems.
Those GM trucks we had, the doors didnt even lock up, we have to hold the door shut as we drove
then repair it and boom, better than the other two right away

I recently bought a 2011 Ford F150 with the 5.0L V8 4X4 in February of this year. It only had 65K miles on it when I bought it and now it has 66K miles on it. Being a mechanic myself, I bought it because I know that you're absolutely right. It's the best, most dependable truck on the road. Everything works perfectly on it and it rides like a dream. My wife loves riding in it (she owns a 2018 Ford Escape that i bought for her and she loves it). I have to say I love your content sir. Being a Houstonian myself, I can really appreciate taking the family down to Galveston once in a while myself. Keep up the good work sir. It's nice to see an honest and trustworthy mechanic putting out such good quality advice.
Thank you very much.
@Ted Roth , This is great to hear. I'm currently looking at a 2011 FX4 with the 5.0 with about 76K on it. I'm a little nervous about buying a 9 year old car since I have a 6 year old lemon at the moment. Everything that I am reading says that the 5.0 is bulletproof. Glad to hear that it is mechanic approved.
I wish my 2011 had your engine and not the shitty 1st gen ecoboost
I just bought a 2011 Ford f150 SuperCrew with a 5.0 coyote. I love it. Even though the EcoBoost version would have gotten me better gas mileage, I'm just glad I don't have to worry about turbos or anything. Best part is they're easy to work on for the most part.
I completely agree, less parts to fail and a descent track record.
You made the right choice, 5.0 is a great engine

Yup Galveston is dirty
First let me say I love Scotty's videos, and really respect his views on cars. That having been said, I almost agree with this list. I think 1 & 2 should be switched. The reliability of Toyota Tundra outweighs Fords ability to be repaired easily. Also, if the day should ever come that you'd want to sell your Tundra(God knows why!!!) Tundra has always had a higher resale value. I think Tundra should have been the #1 choice. The F-150 is a great 1-3 year ownership, But Tundra is a lifetime truck!
Yeah, but that starter issue he mentioned on the Tundra seem pretty pricey to repair. Starters going bad is pretty common.
In another Scotty video the Tundra IS... #1.
Earlier videos were on the mark, but Scotty, like many others have saturated their info market, and now it's just another Car and Driver rodeo, having to play to a different audience to keep from being repetitive.
I don’t know why but I trust this guy.
I have 2000 Nissan frontier (V6 gasoline Automatic transmission 2wd) and it has done great works so far.
I got a 03 Ford Ranger 4x4 4.0 liter..No problems with the trans and motor..I just put ball joints and front and back brakes..With new rotors..I will be another 200 k out of it..It now has 190,000.. I am 62 I will die before it stops..
My ranger is a '94 4x4 4.0 L, it has 600,000 and still pumping ugly.. dam good truck!

GuyBelmont as a frontier owner, I was anxiously waiting for his opinion
@@antitheist5567 Great trucks, hard to find used at a reasonable price because people buy them and never sell them because they are awesome.
I love the Frontier especially that 4.0 liter engine and it has better room than the Tacoma and Ranger.
AttentionJunkie I know I don’t see myself selling mine anytime soon
GuyBelmont I love the torquey feeling of the 4.0. And the mpg isn’t worse than competitors. I’m pulling off 19-20 mpg combined.
My 2007 Tacoma is proof of how durable they are. It drove a couple thousand miles with low gear oil in the rear diff. A few hundred miles with a dying or dead alternator on just a new battery. It even drove with a shot wheel bearing and broken strut. I also hooked the wrong battery up on opposite posts and it only blew the 140 main fuse. Even when parts were broken, it got me where I needed to be. By the way, it's an offroad only rig these days and runs maybe about a month every year. It doesn't quit and impresses my neighbors when it fires up without hesitation.
I’m thinking about buying a Ford F-150 2007 and this video reassured me that it will be good
Yes you are correct; every Technician knows how to work on a 5.4 F150 spark plugs, timing chain, exhaust manifolds, camshaft phasers and
ECT.
It's because techs get so much practice on broken down Fords!! LOL!
I love how you put a land field to represent Galveston’s ocean 😂😂
If you're in the market for a Tundra I would recommend one with a V6 engine. You still get plenty of power and decent gas mileage. Before I moved overseas I drove one for years and never had a single problem with it with regular oil changes.
Unless you use it for work projects and tow often
I love mine I have the 8' bed which is great for using it to haul concrete and lumber.
my 2005 tundra, is still going strong 4.0 v6 6 on floor.. love these trucks
Scotty, being a mechanic you should warn ppl of what issues Ford has with F150s. Triton spark plug issues, cam phaser and timing chain issues. Very expensive and common problems.
Yeah those tritons were nightmares. I specifically searched for a older Windsor when buying our van. Not impressed with the AOD but the 302 runs like a top.
@S M tritons suck end of story lmao
@Troy Simoneau were talking about used trucks, so what?
I have a 2002 Ford F-150 XLT with a 4.6L Triton v8, I replaced the spark plugs no problem. The Triton engines do have issues but if you take care of them and do regular maintenance on them they can last for quite a long time. My truck only has 120,000 miles on it but I have seen some trucks last up to 600,000 miles without issue.
If you use the right oil and change it often those problems will never happen
got a 2008 f150 with a standard 5 speed, towed a 5000+ pound trailer over 1/3 of its life and got 116k off first clutch before it started slipping in reveres. 400 bucks and good as new. almost 180k on it and it drives like the day i bought it. its got the 4.2l v6

2nd gen Dodge dakota V6 is pretty durable truck that's very easy to work on. Most any vehicle will last a long time if you take care of them......
Dakotas got terrible gas mileage. I knew a Dakota fanatic who bought a new Dakota every two years since they launched, always with the 318. The 3.9 is closely derived from this block, even sharing the same bore and stroke. He bought a 96 Ram with a 318 and never bought another Dakota again. He got an additional 2 mpg with the bigger truck and it didn't squat or sway when he pulled trailers. Mechanically, I have no issue with their reliability. That generation of Dodge trucks was pretty solid.
The latest models 2008 and up Ram Dakotas have a really powerful 4.7, theyre towing capacity destroys tacomas. I was looking the other day and they are not cheap and hard to find.

Surprised to see that the old 1988-1998 K1500 Silverados were not on the list. Those things with the 5.7L V8 will run forever (and I speak from experience). Yep... I have a 88 GMC with a V6 standard... not as much power but I get 25 mpg imperial! Gets me around ... don't tow anything heavy...that's where the V8 is needed...pretty reliable vehicle !
My 97 K1500 has 240,000 miles. I have installed 2 fuel pumps in that time. It is still my daily driver.
As a Ford technician, if you want an F-150, get either the 3.5l EcoBoost, or the 5.0l V8. They're much easier to work on than the 2.7 EcoBoost. We haven't had any diesel F-150s in the shop yet, but from what I hear from other shops, they're also pretty easy to work on. The 5.0l V8 is a many times proven bulletproof engine, and it gets decent MpG. The 3.5l EcoBoost is the one you want if you REALLY want them MpG. The diesels also get pretty good MpG, all in all, the Ford F series line gets good fuel economy. This is due, in part, to most of them weighing less than 5,000lbs. They also have really good aerodynamics, the engines are well designed and have literal millions of dollars spent on the engineering of them, we have had a few newer year F-150s come in with upwards of 250,000 miles (fleet trucks, cabs, daily drivers, what have you) and they still ran strong with all of the engine options that I recommended and have worked on (3.5 EcoBoost, 5.0l V8). As for Rangers, I own one myself, it has nearly 300,000 miles. Still runs pretty good. I have to fix a few things on it, but it's a strong runner. If you want one, the manuals are the better option, as well as the manual crank windows. Although, we had one come in for a headlight bulb the other day and it was an automatic with power windows, and it had 430,000 miles. But don't listen to Scotty on these trucks. The 4 cylinder ones are not nearly as reliable as the 3.0l V6 or the beefy 4.0l V6. But the two Ford trucks on the list I can say from experience are extremely reliable, easy to work on, and inexpensive. They're also really fun to drive. We haven't worked on any new Rangers yet, though. From other Ford guys, I've heard they're very similar to the F-150s. I dislike the newer ones because they don't have a manual option, but still. They're pretty good. I'd like to hear the experiences from you guys about the other trucks on this list, or even the two I mentioned.
I'm in the process of getting a 2018 Supercab F-150 3.3L V6 Naturally Aspirated 6 spd Automatic, do you have any comments or concerns on these?
@Luis Villalobos honestly if your gonna keep it for a while your better off with the naturally aspirated one. The turbo just wears it out faster. Trust me I’ve already seen 3 of those trucks go out that have turbos and they aren’t cheap to fix. Plus most people just go to the dealership to get warranty stuff done they hardly ever get their hands dirty. By the time that truck actually breaks down it’s gonna be well out of warranty. Which is why this Ford technician hasn’t seen them. Scotty is actually a real mechanic that knows what he’s talking about
For a European, driving a car that drives more than 50 miles on a gallon, it is ridiculous to see someone claim that the Pickup trucks from Ford have good fuel economy. And have good aerodynamics, haha. Sorry to laugh. But I cannot understand it.
@@ronaldderooij1774 they do in fact have good fuel economy for a pick up truck.
Ronald de Rooij In the class of pickup trucks, Ford gets the best fuel efficiency. In America, we pay a lot less for gas than Europeans do. This is why we’re ok with less fuel efficiency. Where I live, I can get gas/petrol for $2.09-$2.39/gal. You guys pay that much for a liter of the same fuel. We have some vehicles that get 60-75mpg highway, but they’re just not necessary here. At least in some states, we don’t have a super heavy gas tax. My state included. So while I understand why you drive a vehicle that gets 60mpg, understand that it’s not necessary in America.
I just bought a used '13 F150 XLT today, got a good deal too, and I can already tell it was a good choice

1999 and older Chevy Silverados. Easy to work on and last for ever, cheap to fix and upgrade if needed. I would recommend the 5.7 engine but they all have there place. Fords not bad but you have to go with the 5.0 coyote nothing else lasts unfortunately.

I know this video has been around awhile but it still holds true. Great video and great advice as always. Sometimes those foreign trucks outshine our U.S. models especially in smaller trucks because they are made for the international market and sometimes U.S. companies cut corners on what they produce for trucks sold only here. I had a Datsun years ago that is currently Nissan and it was made well. That was when all the mini trucks were sub contracted out of country before they were made here and then the U.S companies would have them produce trucks that were not as good as the trucks they made themselves for the international market. Examples being Chevy Luv and the Ford Courier. Both inferior to the trucks made in those foreign plants that sold internationally.
Gary tru, I had a Mazda (Currier) for 19 years and would be surprised to learn its not still on the road. I didn't know about you're reason for it being was so reliable , but it makes sense!
Ford definitely has improved over the years. My dad would never consider owning one recalling how rough they were when he was younger.
