Should have mentioned you can swap the screen for the one the most expensive deck comes with thanks to ifixit. So if you buy the cheaper one and later decide you want the coated screen, you can do it for $99. It’s a pain to do for sure, but if you were going to take it apart for a shell upgrade you might as well upgrade the screen too :)
That’s exactly what i be doing next week. I have the display already here and just wait for extremerates shell. I did the SSD mod today with an m.2 enclosure (from 64GB to 2TB) and it took me 15mins to clone and replace the SSD. It‘s absolutely worth it.
There's some new 3rd party screens in the works that are 1200p and supposedly more colour accurate. Might be a decent add-on if you're going through the trouble of changing everything in the Deck.
You can literally just get a matt finish screen protector. Probably ones out there that are better than the etched glass anyway, and much cheaper, and not risky to install. If you were to change the screen might as well upgrade to a 1200P one, but then you might as well upgrade to an Ally. The SteamDeck cannot handle 1080p.

The trackpads are extremely useful provided you know how to customize them. I use them for virtual menus in emulators or games with extra keyboard commands that a standard gamepad can't use. Also, the reason the left trackpad wasn't working consistently in the main menu is because it's not set to swipe gestures for navigating. It's set to dpad mode which means you click down in the direction you want to navigate. Your swiping was sometimes putting enough pressure to activate it.
The touchpads are absolutely amazing in games that require a lot of keybindings, I have 10 actions set to the left pad in FEAR and in Euro Truck Sim!! and they are amazing too in desktop mode

I recently replaced my 64gig to a 512gig and even tho I was a bit nervous doing it, I was super happy with the end result! For people new to this kind of stuff its actually really nice to see that Valve made it so simple, for most things anyway, to change in and out parts at will. Ya its a learning curve for a few things but man is it ever worth it in the end.
For the Recovery Image, you can put the recovery image on a MicroSD card aswell, so you don't need any special tools or things except a SD card reader to get the recovery image on the MicroSD.
So the recovery is bootable without anything on the new SSD? I am so tempted to pick up a steamdeck. How small of an image can I go? I guess a 64GB would be enough...
@@tomoprime217 Yes, recovery is bootable without anything on the SSD, The entire process can be done without a USB stick, only thing you need is a MicroSD card and "possibly" a SD card reader if you're computer doesn't have one. Valve recommends atleast 8 GB minimum of space for the recovery image, so anything higher than that should be good, and then once SteamOS is back on the SSD, you can reformat the SD for actual storage.
I had so much trouble with the recovery image. Much of it was probably old cheap thumb drives but i couldn't get it to boot properly from a micro SD either, and at one point the deck just stopped reading the SD at all. Finaly got one of the thumb drives working after re etching three times.
GOOD TIP FOR ANYONE DOING THIS MOD It is not impossible to remove all The adhesive from the old screen. I used paint thinner that I had laying around in my garage and got all the old adhesive off the screen very easily lol
Thank you for being so transparent about the shell. I have a deck coming today and almost bought a transparent shell. Seems like way too much of a hassle. I’d rather do it on my switch or something.
Oh, that phrase about trackpads really triggered me. These are really useful for lots of games - better aim, additional menus (weapon swap, special actions, macros), even mini-map navigation. If found for myself that making good control scheme for some games even more enjoyable than playing these games (maybe because I already played hundred of hours)
BIG nostalgia hit hearing Ridge Racer Type 4 music right at the beginning of the video. The song is Lucid Rhythm, but the caption calls it "calm pop music" lol.
Hey man, just discovered your channel recently and I just wanted to say I really enjoy watching your back catalogue of content! For whomever might be interested: The "2230" form factor is actually derived from its physical dimensions. It's 22mm wide and 30mm long. The most common form factor for M.2 drives is "2280", which is--you've guessed it--22mm wide and 80mm long. Other admissible lengths are 42mm, 60mm, and 110mm. There's also other admissible widths besides 22mm, which are 12mm, 16mm, and 30mm. I'll let you infer what the form factors for any combination of these would be called ;) No, this will not be on the exam :P Bonus Factoid: The connector is only rated for ~60x plug/unplug operations, so you should probably avoid needlessly unplugging those drives.
I got my Steam Deck on Saturday and a 2TB SSD from Sabrent ready to go. The first thing I did was upgrade the SSD the moment the Steam Deck was delivered. I really love the Steam Deck. I was debating or trying to justify owning one, but now I don't care. I love it.
I just used an M.2 SSD enclosure I got from Ali Express for like $5 and used the Konsole command to clone the drive. Takes like 10 minutes to run (though I only had the 64GB version) and all of your settings and downloads are good to go. As long as you follow a guide and copy one line of code you're golden. Also pro tip for musicians or people who live near a music store, a guitar pick (I use heavy picks) makes for a perfect spudger
Id love for him to make a video on it. I love the touchpads but either a "i was wrong" style turnaround on them, or "i was right" type video would both be fun watches. I want him to really try them tho.
For me it is one of the best and honest opinions on all modding and consequences after it done. I am using Nintendo Switch, but it is so nice to watch all of your videos, doesn't matter about Switch or other products. Thank you.
Honestly, hearing about how easy the SSD mod is changing my opinion on getting one. I didn't want to rely on a Micro SD for all my storage and reading with large PC games, but hearing that I could get the cheaper model and just change the amount of storage that easily, total game changer.
Lol Bob yelling at himself to wake up genuinely caught me off guard. The vibe in the videos has always one that is laid back/relaxed. He did a good job with the ad skit though.
The shell looks flimsier than the JSAUX options that are now out for both front and back plates. The threads are metal lined, the back plate has additional thermal pads, and now a place to magnetically add an external fan… maybe check that out if you go for it again?
Of those, I only did the SSD swap. That was pretty simple, although I was terrified. I didn't back up anything, didn't need to, and just used the Steam OS files provided by Valve to get it working. Easy peasy.
Having everything done does look pretty awesome. I did the SSD on mine as soon as I got my steam deck (got the 64GB model, so that was the plan going in). I do have the gullikit hall sense sticks, but they've been sitting in the box. If and when I get drift I'll go ahead and do that. For the case, I've seen a few videos now and EVERYONE said it was a pain. I think what I would do though is swap the back cover and get some matching buttons to swap in which should look pretty good and be reasonable enough to do.
I used goo gone on the adhesive when i did the shell swap on my switch lite. However, I will probably just use the DeckHD screen that will come out later this year when I do this mod to make that process so much simpler.
15:10 "The Steam Deck's useless, just, worthless touchpads" Blasphemy. They are incredibly useful, plus they make the desktop mode (or any mouse-operated application like Yuzu or any 4X games) usable, and are pretty nice in FPS's if you get your settings tuned in well. Also they have haptics, and the default steam navigation mode makes it act like a d-pad where you press it (until the haptics click) to move around, not swipe. In games with mouse control though (including shooters), they're tuned to feel like trackballs with momentum and everything which, combined with the gryo, is surprisingly very nice once you get used to it. If you play splatoon, the gyro makes it handle like that but with a (faster, more mouse-like) trackpad instead of a stick. All of that could be said about the Steam Controller too which had the trackpads in a more comfortable location. Valve pls, Steam Controller 2 with all of the Steam Deck inputs and a better trackpad location
I feel like people don't talk about the repairability enough. It's great knowing if a stick breaks, I can just replace it fairly easily. Unlike a drift-con lol.
@@GhostyOcean At the beginning everyone mentioned that, however, I have some friends that have not been following the Steam Deck, but now with the Ally being available, they were trying to decide which one to get, but most reviews don't mention that in their comparison, they only focus on the additional power of the Ally and the console like experience of the Steam Deck.
At least this and Joy-con are easier than the PSP where everything is on a different board and the D-pad is litterally a sticker applied to the plastic of the shell.
@@kotta8kritter ah, that would probably be a significant difference then. I don't watch comparisons between the handhelds since I already own and am perfectly content with my deck. Thanks Bob for suffering through this. Now I know I won't want to do this. Possibly only the buttons if anything. I won't be able to afford to get a new one if it breaks 😵

For some reason when I swapped out the SSD I had a nightmare of a time trying to flash the OS onto it. Sincerely I had a really tough time with it and it had nothing to do with the physical swap but everything to do with trying to get the data onto a thumbdrive and train SSD with that specific operating system. At one point after three late nights of working on it it actually started to install the new OS automatically. It was as though I had a mystical non-physical helping hand at the end of my extremely difficult process. I'm definitely not new to tinkering and this SSD swap was completely beguiling befuddling and ridiculously difficult for no apparent reason.
I know you won't see this as it is a year late, but I like the fact that you used Ridge Racer Type 4's "Lucid Rhythms" in the intro. This game's soundtrack is one of my favorite of all time. I appreciate it, and your good taste!
Bought a deck at the start of the sale, got a 2tb ssd to replace the 512gb one, one of the best pices of tech ive bought, its genuilly fun to tweak with settings and learn SteamOS. It's made me consider daily driving Ubunto on my regular desktop.
I did the gulikit sticks about two weeks ago and while I had it open I replaced the thermal paste with ptm7950. Got about a 7 degree drop on temps. Lowered the joystick deadzones down to 3200. I'm more than happy with these mods, maybe I'll upgrade the ssd at some point. I focus on the games I'm playing not the look of the device.
the metal backed jsaux backplate drops temps too. takes heat from the internal shield but the external metal gets hot to compensate. I haven't had an extremely loud fan like I did before playing heavy games. docked and at max GPU+CPU using power tools i don't hear it much at all
@@lolcat I'm actually more interested in the new internal heatshield some people have started to receive on their new steam decks. Saw a couple posts on reddit. Looks like a bit thicker iodized plate. Think the jsaux backplate would probably perform even better with that new shield design.
Hey just so you guys know. For that Hall effect mod, you don’t even need to worry about the button. Install them put the shell back on. Turn on go to desktop mode, search Konsole in settings, type in thumbstick_cal, enter it follow the prompts. Then when you go back on steam os your stick will be center. Just thought that would help. I didn’t even deal with the calibration. I just made sure they were installed correctly. Then I did the whole calibration after I had it back together, for the Gulikit Hall effect for the steam deck oled
Honestly wish they sold the Steam Deck without storage so I could source my own. Everyone that does the swap just has a low capacity default SSD lying around now.
i thought i would hate the touch pads but the way they are implemented with the steam deck i absolutely love them. in fact, after having used the touch pads to navigate desktop mode, my decision to purchase any future hand-helds will be affected by weather or not the device has touch-pad tech. love them.
The SSD upgrade is so worth it. I can now play Boulder gate three with mods. I wasn't able to do that before because motors gate 3 took 150 GB storage and I was almost at my limit on my previous SSD
Man Bob you crazy. The track has are the greatest thing about the steam deck and the one thing all the other handheld PCS are forgetting about. All those old games like Warcraft 2 or 3 and Dawn of War and battlefleet Gothic, that one's not really old, but all these old ass games that are really hard to do with a controller especially RTS games, the track pads come in clutch. The track pads are just amazing things that need the mouse and they're so versatile and you can even set them up to be several buttons. So games that use a shit ton of buttons and you don't have enough on the controller, you can set up a little wheel on one of the touch pads that will be several of the buttons you need
Thanks man. Brutal honesty here. Didn't even consider the old glue residue making the new new screen protrude ever so slightly. That would bug me the f**k out. I'm glad I watched this video.
I got the Sabrent 2TB from Amazon. It took about 2 weeks to arrive, but it was very expensive due to tariffs as I'm from Europe. Having 2TB SSD plus 1TB sdcard is awesome. I haven't even filled up the whole storage yet. I also bought the Gulikit joysticks and they are nice. Be careful to buy the newer version. The older version requires soldering a wire, and it doesn't have the AB switch: it only works on version A. And regarding the versions A and B: if you select the wrong one, the only feature that won't work is the ability of the joystick to detect when you touch the top of the joystick. So be careful if it *appears* to work fine. Besides being unaffected by drift, the new joysticks can reduce the "dead zone" to almost zero. The dead zone has to be reduced in the settings, but it's quite easy, and can be done in the GUI without the need to go to the desktop mode. I also bought the Jsaux backplate crystal version. It looks very cool, and improves the thermals. It achieves that by having a metal plate that gets very hot, but it doesn't bother me. I agree changing the front cover is definitely not worth it, so I didn't do it either. A lot of work and big risk of damages and imperfections. Don't do it unless you are obsessed about aesthetics and you are trying to turn your Deck into an art piece or something. I also got the Jsaux mod case. I quite like it, although it will make the metal plate dissipate less heat, worsening thermal performance by a bit. I believe there's really no other mod worth doing, and if you get all of this stuff you'll be totally fine until the Deck 2.
14:22 impossible is a strong word, it is doable. But you need tons of rubbing alcohol (%91) and you have to scrape it thoroughly while applying light heat now and then to loosen it and press it in. You could have also replaced the screen at the same time with the anti glare screen
Transparent shells are cool and all, but the steam decks shell is so satisfying to hold in that texture is just so great that I can't imagine wanting to change it. I put a spin on mine and I'm already starting to regret it because of how smooth. It doesn't have that perfect grippy feel to it
I bought the transparent green back shell from Jsaux a couple months ago. Then they announced their full transparent shells, and I really want to do it, but they don't offer the front in green 😕 I've done Switch Lite shell swaps, and they're fun to do. This looks a little more challenging, and therefore a little more fun to me, in a twisted kind of way.

funny that i go into this video with: an ssd ordered, no plans to get the hall effect joysticks but was thinking that if they need replacing, why not, and i never planned on a shell swap. lol.
Will be doing all of this in about a week... I'm a little scared but also excited. It won't be the first time I've had to remove the screen from my deck, I upgraded to the matte screen about a month into ownership. Also upping from 1TB to 2TB.
It's worth mentioning though that when swapping SSD in the Deck, it's good to look at the drive's wattage. Higher wattage 1tb 2230 drives will consume more battery and more importantly can even fry the deck if you were unlucky in silicon lottery when it came to certain chip located close to the SSD on the motherboard, and there are multiple examples of people who mounted something like the WD SN740 which has 5 watts of power causing that chip to fry itself and Deck needing it replaced to start working again. Comparably, Kingston 512GB SSD that Steam Deck can come with which only takes around 3,5W if I recall. Sabrent and Inland drives are alright though if I remember right they take around 4W.
I did the extremerate case. (Clear Blue) i opted to use the track pads as is. I luckily already had a full on electronics repair kit to the screen was simple. I also purchased the OEM steam deck screen adhesive as people said the version that comes with the kit is just slightly thicker.
Man, I'm glad to see this video. I was about to bite the bullet and try out this mod, but this just gave me flashbacks to fixing 3x faulty Vita 1000 screens. Thanks for the heads up!
I got a 512GB Steam Deck from Kogan (Aussie importer-reseller of Steam Decks amongst other things), and since I got my Logitech K840 keyboard and MX Ergo trackball the Deck is a beautiful little portable system whilst I'm unable to use my much beefier home PC's. Currently got a 128GB MicroSD in it, and when funds are a bit more free I'll be upgrading the Deck to a 2TB 2230 M.2 and 1TB MicroSD following the Clonezilla Drive Migration method as currently got a LOT of mods for Mass Effect Legendary Edition installed right now (along with the Persona games), and I have the stock MELE backups stored on the MicroSD to provide a smidge more room on the SSD.

Same I use it to map extra actions that would be more comfortable to use via virtual menu. also do you know that you can make nested virtual menu? Like, you click menu 1 and another menu shows up.
It's almost like you can bind 100 buttons if you want to!

I think the hardest part for me was moving over the heat shield on the SSD. Fiddly as hell, and I was worried it was crumble and tear apart.
@@skycloud4802 Oh ya 100%
That was weirdly the hardest thing to do out of all of this.
GOOD TIP FOR ANYONE DOING THIS MOD
It is not impossible to remove all
The adhesive from the old screen. I used paint thinner that I had laying around in my garage and got all the old adhesive off the screen very easily lol
The left touchpad in gaming mode works as a DPad. You should press on the 4 sides of the square.
Thank you for being so transparent about the shell. I have a deck coming today and almost bought a transparent shell. Seems like way too much of a hassle. I’d rather do it on my switch or something.
those blue buttons are so freaking cool.
Thank youuuuuu
Missed a prime opportunity to have a shot of Zim in a tutu.
props on the swap.
I also wanted to suggest potentially making a future video on gaming smartphones and how well they run emulators, specifically Gamecube/Wii games, Ps2 games, and 3ds games. Keep up the great work man!
For whomever might be interested:
The "2230" form factor is actually derived from its physical dimensions.
I'll let you infer what the form factors for any combination of these would be called ;)
No, this will not be on the exam :P
Bonus Factoid: The connector is only rated for ~60x plug/unplug operations, so you should probably avoid needlessly unplugging those drives.
I have never related with another content creator this hard 🤣
The slight imperfections that piss this man off speaks to my soul.
My Steam Deck is on it's way, bought it during the Summer Sale. This video came right on time, thanks!
THat R4 music in the beginning brought back some great memories
Bob's hatred of the touchpads, is so great. Never change Bob.
Thank you.
Great video, dissembling many times and not even being better than before is greatest night time stories for technicians to sleep well
Honestly, hearing about how easy the SSD mod is changing my opinion on getting one.
I definitely trust them more the back plate from them feels stock to me I'm just waiting for blue
@@lolcat I’ve ordered the purple front/back set so will see how well it’s made when it arrives. But so far looks promising.
Of those, I only did the SSD swap. That was pretty simple, although I was terrified. I didn't back up anything, didn't need to, and just used the Steam OS files provided by Valve to get it working. Easy peasy.
Thanks for the video. I think I will put a mat screen on mine and change the buttons.
1000 GB and only 73 are free? Yikes
Ye like how is this even possible xD
The new Hall effect sticks should have a physical button on the daughter board that lets you do the calibration doing the swap.
I fast forwarded the video some & I thought he was putting the steam deck in the oven for a second hahaha
I feel like people don't talk about the repairability enough. It's great knowing if a stick breaks, I can just replace it fairly easily. Unlike a drift-con lol.
What do you mean? I have heard praises since the beginning about the deck's repairability. Maybe we're getting our info from different sources.
I'll watch reviews of the other ones because I think they're cool, and the deck's repairability isn't mentioned that much in that context. But I see tons of content about people's customization of their decks all the time.
Thank you again for including the buttons I made you!
that Steam button is really cool, nice work!
@@brandon_nope Glad you dig em! I was really hyped pulling those out of the mold for the first time :D
Hi! I’m the friend who was thinking about making a cool coloured steam deck… thanks for stopping me
Thanks Bob for suffering through this. Now I know I won't want to do this. Possibly only the buttons if anything. I won't be able to afford to get a new one if it breaks 😵
I feel like each video of yours I watch the more I appreciate them. The highlight was at the 16min mark going off on the not so transparent touchpads. Convinced me to skip that mode on my own when I receive it.
9:35 You can also recalibrate it with the tiny switch on the back of the joystick modules.
The Amazon posting says this on it.
I have watched a couple of your videos and this by far is my favorite. The animation in your tone and explanation is truly relieving that I'm not the only one who has these problems.
good video moist critical, didnt know you were into steam decks!
@WULFF DEN - I'm so glad that you showed your Happy Gilmore Moment. Because even, I was thinking in my head when you were all like "What the F***K?!?" 🤣🤣🤣
@WULFF DEN -> SCAMMERS have Infiltrated your Comments ...
15:17 in the steam deck menu, the left touchpad acts like a d-pad, you click on the left and it goes left, you click on the right and it goes right. swiping does nothing
I'm so confused by that, the thing has been out for over a year and this dude has made multiple videos about it. How can you possibly get that wrong? And the gall to call the touchpads "stupid" when you don't even know the first thing about how they work...
@@aaronsiegfried7891 yep the fact that he's neglecting that part on a device for that long is amazing in itself, also show that how ignorant he is that he never used steam input at all despite it's on the first page when you click steam button during game, or he probably never use the device outside from making content.
Bob and wood and arlos sponsor sections are the only ones I genuinely dont skip because i actually enjoy them
If companies actually had good ads in wouldnt be so nettled about them on youtube
Anything that forces me to use the terminal, gets an extra point. I love working in the terminal.
Lego brick separation tools are my go to spudger for YEARS now
I'm always excited to see Bob's Ad's they're always so much fun
That classic Ridge Racer Type 4 music in the intro really set the vibe.
Hearing Bob say "YA HUNGRY" gets me through the day.
I can’t believe bob doesn’t even have a custom Wulff Den boot logo
For anyone interested in the shell, you can just replace the back one with a few screws, only the front one is difficult.
i thought i would hate the touch pads but the way they are implemented with the steam deck i absolutely love them. in fact, after having used the touch pads to navigate desktop mode, my decision to purchase any future hand-helds will be affected by weather or not the device has touch-pad tech. love them.
The SSD upgrade is so worth it. I can now play Boulder gate three with mods. I wasn't able to do that before because motors gate 3 took 150 GB storage and I was almost at my limit on my previous SSD
Important tip! From what I've heard, you will snap your Micro SD card in two if you take apart the case without removing it first.
Thanks Wolf, I was really on the fence about the shell.
I’m really happy Bob is having a good time doing the ads
This is the only guy who's ads I actually watch and enjoy.
I love the Steam Deck-themed word censoring so much. You're genius!
I did the SSD and the analogs 2 days ago. I love it. Went from 256gb to 2tb. Also get the antiglare screen protector, its worth it.
That LEGO separater really is a godsend 👌🏼
0:06 The shell is separated here
14:22 impossible is a strong word, it is doable. But you need tons of rubbing alcohol (%91) and you have to scrape it thoroughly while applying light heat now and then to loosen it and press it in. You could have also replaced the screen at the same time with the anti glare screen
Yup 100% agree. I used paint thinner and got all the old glue off pretty easily.
@@juan25amarillo I felt paint thinner might be a little bit high water content. I'd imagine it's super effective tho
I use a circular motion on the left touch pad which is makes it like a scroll wheel. It is amazing.
Transparent shells are cool and all, but the steam decks shell is so satisfying to hold in that texture is just so great that I can't imagine wanting to change it. I put a spin on mine and I'm already starting to regret it because of how smooth. It doesn't have that perfect grippy feel to it
My god watching you struggle with the touchpads made my day.
I wish Valve/Steam offered to shell swap for people i'd pay to have it done professionally lol
I’m sorry but the steam deck touch pads are great. One of its best input method, makes mouse games actually workable (eg RTS games)
Oh man he's really upgrading the lore of the ads. This guy has a dancing forensics son with his wife of which they are divorced but he can't let her go. This is the ad content I come for
funny that i go into this video with: an ssd ordered, no plans to get the hall effect joysticks but was thinking that if they need replacing, why not, and i never planned on a shell swap. lol.
i love your videos because you're the only person having an extremely rough time modding ANYTHING 😂
Will be doing all of this in about a week... I'm a little scared but also excited. It won't be the first time I've had to remove the screen from my deck, I upgraded to the matte screen about a month into ownership. Also upping from 1TB to 2TB.
15:19 It's emulating a Dpad lol, you press down in the direction u want to go, not swipe.
Someone give this man a permanent commercial job on tv
Thanks for the heads up!
that was one of the longer streams I’ve ever sat through
A nice middle ground is just replacing the back plate on the deck. Super easy and you can see the back internals.
The dock fits really well on the back of the steam deck case in the pouch!
The left trackpad in the game mode steam menu acts as a dpad, you don't swipe, you press, just like a dpad!
