Lalo Salamanca is probably one of my favorite characters in the whole show, despite only showing up more than halfway through. Just the sheer charisma he wields makes him both terrifying and fascinating to watch.

At 1:11:50, Mike uncovers the body not to get Hector into hot water (this never comes back to bite him), but to give the family of the "good Samaritan" closure. In his scene right before at the grief counseling, his love interest (Anita) talks about how her and her daughter never found her husbands body/what happened to him: "They found our car, but they never found him. And even after all these years, not knowing how he passed, or where he is- I wish it didn't matter. But it does."
Also important because this is the fate that Mike's family will eventually experience in BB. They'll never know what happened to him once he went "missing".

1:41:25 Lalo doesn't knock out the money transfer guy, he kills him. This is important as later down the line, it's what he's arrested and awaiting trial for
This show absolutely nailed two completely different types of villains. Chuck is a love-to-hate type of villain, where he's being so despicable in ways that aren't criminal but are still very infuriating and heartbreaking, and you can't wait for everything to implode back on him. Lalo, in contrast, is a hate-to-love villain, he's so charming and sociable that you can't help but smile back at him, but you don't want to because you know he will kill you if you smile slightly wrong.
@@Howesenberg That's also very true, the show still doesn't paint him as a cartoon supervillain and instead makes his antagonism understandable. Personally I still find his fall very satisfying, but I also do feel sorry for Chuck in many ways.

A lot of people sleep on the first few seasons, expecting it to just be Breaking Bad again. In my opinion, the show suffers writing-wise when it does become that, introducing contrivances and plot armor where otherwise there's no flaws in the writing.

I like the way the show puts the suffering of Howard into a second storyline that is treated like a kid brother or kind of a “stepbrotheresque” side story. Howard truly suffered from Jimmy’s attacks and the writers did a wonderful thing in keeping the after effects of all of those terrible pranks from the viewer so when he finally snaps it left us with examining our own guilt for not really recognizing the real world problems all those pranks would cause. That’s why I keep Howard in a warmer place in my heart than any other character on the show.
17:36 it is funny to me that chuck, the super lawyer, doesn't know that you DON'T ANSWER THE DOOR if cops knock. If they have a reason to come in, they will do so. Anything else is you creating evidence (fake or otherwise) against yourself
As for my opinion on why Kim reacted so strongly to Chuck's letter, I don't think it was the letter itself that made her upset, I think it was the lack of any emotion from Jimmy which he uses as a coping mechanism. During the scene you can notice how she focuses on Jimmy while he reads it, as well as recommending therapy.
It’s wild Chuck really said “no, I refuse to believe you got better, so I’m going to force you back into crime by making it hard for you to get a regular job”.
For me, Jimmy's decision to help Mrs Landry in S3E10 'Lantern', was a reminder that at this point he still is empathetic and altruistic at heart, qualities that are gone by the time he becomes Saul Goodman full time. Further to that, Jimmy choosing to do the right thing is juxtaposed with the blow of being told he doesn't matter to Chuck, which I imagine adds to his 'no good deed goes unpunished' transformation into Saul. This was such a good video, been a fan since your Breaking Bad one, thank you for taking the time and effort to make this thoroughly entertaining breakdown!
In the last episodes it also helps show how different the Saul persona is from Jimmy. Saul was ready to strangle Marrion with the lifealert cord, where as Jimmy spent time helping elders with wills, went dumpster diving to expose that sandpiper was scamming the elders. And that Jimmy couldnt do all that to Mrs Landry, he had fix the problem he caused. Jimmy chose to help Mrs Landry over the settlement money, Saul was ready to strangle a old Lady in a mobility scooter just to escape.
Werner was like Gale. He knew he was deeply involved in a vast criminal enterprise but was extremely naive. Mike killed Werner because he knew very well that Gus, Tyrus, and Victor would've also murdered his wife too.
@@flightofthebumblebee9529i didnt feel as bad for gale but i think that cause werners final moment was telling his wife no to come to him but to stay home unable too tell her why
Took me a while to watch the whole thing but that’s just because I’m a busy guy. Really great way to unwind after work or while I’m making dinner, great commentary as always!
SPOILERS: When I saw the part with jimmy ruining this old lady's life, I genuinely broke into tears. It's such a cruel thing to do. I was on his side during the sandpiper case because i hate seeing old people being taken advantage of, but seeing him do what he did to this old lady was the inverse of that. I genuinely hated Jimmy for a couple episodes after.
I know you probably spent a lot of time setting this up so I will say, I appreciate the episode intro segments you put inbetween each episode with a reference to each one. It's the little things
Awesome thanks very much! I was no way expecting you to donate again! Very touched. I liked Mr Robot but I fell out of watching it shortly after the big reveal of his relationship with his Dad. I might pick it up again one day for a review
The conversation between nachos dad and mike also was kinda of a contrast of their characters where mike took revenge for his sons death but nachos dad knew better and that it would only lead to worse things happening
fun fact: Bob Odenkirk (Jimmy/Saul) had issues with his heart while filming S6E08 and its scary to think some of the acting he did that ended up on tv was of him having those issues thanks to being scared of Lalo
Minor nitpick but at 1:33:05. It's not Something Stupid by Frank and Nancy Sinatra, it's a cover by Lola Marsh. The song wasn't actually even first recorded by Sinatra, but by Carson and Gaille.
Absolutely perfect commentary video. Isn’t that long for an entire show analysis but still has time to go over details. I see many improvements from the breaking bad video. Once again great work man I know that this channel will one day get the attention it deserves!
As always, fantastic job on this video, I have no idea what compelled me to watch this recap after I practically just binge watched the series, but some how, I’m glad I did.
Both, Mike and Saul were great characters in Baking Bread but they're backstory and initial connection and development is just on another level. Saul by himself would still have made it a good series but with Mike also getting so much attention, is nearly blew Baking Bread out of the water, at least for me personally
2:32:46 I will defend Kim and Jesse meeting with my life. Kim's soul is already broken down by Jimmy, Jesse's soul is about to be broken down by Walter. Jesse is clearly full of life at this point in the timeline, and it's off putting, knowing how much he's going to be destroyed all because of Saul (and Walt), just like Kim already has been. Her lifelessness in that conversation says everything. She's an unsettling reflection of who Jesse is going to become. Also RIP Mark Margolis. Familia es todo
a very important thing you should consider about the breaking bad cameos is they first parallel black and white sauls response to sink deeper into crime, and secondly highlight just how saul jumped on working with Walter White despite Mike warning him on otherwise and being kidnapped, giving vital context for finale (especially for those who haven't watched breaking bad and wouldn't have know just how much the silly saul character helped walter)
I guess I was going with the assumption that people watching Better Call Saul would have seen Breaking Bad. If they hadn't seen it, I think this episode would be enough to connect the two timelines personally.
@@Howesenberg i feel the episode is about recontextualizing what saul did in breaking bad through what he does again as gene. in that episode he sees the opportunity to steal from a vulnerable man with cancer and is advised not to do it several times, but he does it anyway. he took advantage of a cancer patient for money twice now. this episode shows how morally bankrupt jimmy is at the core after everything happened. he saw the consequences of his first time stealing from a cancer patient and he did it again anyway just because he could.
@@Howesenberg The RV flashback is also meant to show us how being kidnapped was from Jimmy's perspective, especially after we know who Lalo is now. The scene is more intense when he's kneeling in front of the grave and Jesse's question of who Lalo is shows how traumatised he still is to believe he came back again.
I found Walter and Jesses scenes mainly exist to A) in the Walter/Jesse scene, to give more context to that scene. It feels like a very solid continuation of what happened as the Ignacio/Lalo convo is pretty believable, especially considering that BB episode is the basis for a good chunk of BCS. B) In Jesses scene, it definitely feels like the passing the torch scene, of people lives ruined in part by Saul Goodman, and the story as a whole. C) Walters scene just feels sad to the viewer, as Jimmy was a decent guy, but all people will ever see is the scum that is Saul Goodman, even Walter White. They are all very heavily fan service no doubt, but they all feel good to have in the story. Also I feel like Jimmy hiring Bill as his lawyer was just to troll him honestly lmao, good video bro.
I agree, Walter white is practically the sole reason Saul ends up like he does in the last episodes. Not acknowledging that would be weird and I think the rv flashback helps remind us where it all started.
You're right, idk why he complains about it being forced but can't remember that Walt and Jesse were a major impact on Jimmy's life, but since everyone is a media critic and its cool to have hot takes then we do not have to use our brains to connect themes ourselves. I understand making a point and backing it up with evidence but blowing complaining about something important just because you do not like it is a major bird-brain moment.
@@user-pp2tz9br1g Walt was a major impact. Jesse was not. All of Walt's family was just there to create conflict. This includes Jesse. Jesse being there makes it feel like a cameo from Brian Cranston and Aaron Paul instead of Walt and Jesse showing up in a flashback. Edit: This said before watching that far in this video.
I didn't really feel that any of the Walt/Jesse cameos were pointless. They each meant something very important. 1) Their shared scene was Saul's introduction to them, and it's important for Saul's role in Walt's demise, which adds more to Breaking Bad's story, but also strengthens the connective tissue between the main events of this show, and the Gene timeline, by exploring what went wrong for Saul after Kim left. 2) Kim and Jesse's scene was a shared moment where one character escapes Saul and another begins a partnership. The two had a lot in common and I think it worked for that reason. 3) Walt's scene made a lot of sense as he was one of the three 'ghosts' in Saul's time machine discussions along with Mike and Chuck. They obviously had some more fan servicey elements but I think they were handled extremely well for what they were.

Micheal McKean should have won an Emmy. He was perfect. I literally just rewatches Spinal Tap a few nights ago and my wife and I still laugh like it’s the first time. He’s so underrated.
Great video as always. Just a note: Jimmy wasn't excluded from the Sandpiper money after messing with Irene. The main motivation (at first) behind Kim and Jimmy's scheme to take down Howard is the Sandpiper money, since ruining Howards reputation will cause HHM to settle sooner and can fast track Kim and Jimmy's individual law practices. Then it's revealed that the settlement money wasn't Kim's main motivation after she received the offer from Cliff for her pro bono practice, which she blew off in order to fix the Howard scam. The settlement money is also how Jimmy was able to become full Saul Goodman so soon.
2:32:27 The important scene with this interaction is that Kim let's Jesse use her lighter for a smoke, which is supposed to represent a passing of the torch, from one ruined life to another.
Wow, BRAVO! The way you took what I’m sure was several thousand man hours of writing, directing, acting, etc. and boiled it down to a summary absolutely amazes me! You’ve re-told the story in such a way that I almost feel as if I just binged watched the series again. You even filled in a few holes for me. You’ve done a peerless job on two of the three greatest TV series of all time. I do hope you’ll take on the remaining one of the three. You may be the only writer that could summarize The Sopranos in a fitting manner. Great work! Peace, DrRick
At 1:17:30, Jimmy reveals he's the one behind getting her to settle and all the things he did to trick the other women into hating her so that they stop ostracizing her. He feels terrible that this sweet old lady who trusts him has had her life ruined, and that the other women are going to keep treating her like shit even though she agreed to settle (it was setup in scene with Kim before that he thought they'd accept her one she agreed to settle)
I understand why he did it, it just feels out of character for him as his affection for them was always driven by his desire to make money and keep himself afloat. It wasn't a big deal for me, just wanted to mention that a part of my brain noticed it.
@@Howesenberg I dont think his affection to the old people was just for the money. If one of them didnt have all the money, he still does the will for them and tells them to pay him when they can, if he only cared about money he would not to do that. Same thing later when one of those clients dies and their nephew calls him and Jimmy remembers everyone in their families name and what items they should be receiving. I think season 4 (or 5 i forget lol) is when he is edging closer to losing his morals and he tries the settlement thing with the old lady and then ends up feeling bad bc he cares about them.
Damn this explanation was amazing, watched it after the breaking bad one which was also great. The cinematography, character development and violence is all on point with this show. When people say this series does better than its prequel, as any show or movie should, it surely does show that with its title and its presentation. I got confused with this show as if it's actually before or after breaking bad cause they shows scenes where Saul, Walter and Jesse discussed and other scenes that perplexed me but then I got the message and finally understood after awhile and also clearer to me after watching this video, especially the last season explanation you've done. Thank you.

Play Far Cry 3. He's one of the main villains. Best villain performance.
@@MonkeyKingsformerroomateI second this, his performance as Vaas was nothing short of perfect, Vaas still remains in my mind as one of the greatest video game villains of all time
Funnily enough they wanted to make a Farcry 2 type villain (they kinda did with Hoyt) but Mando stole the show so much they wrote a whole character + live action trailer for him.
@@nouhorni3229 I honestly forgot about Hoyt for the most part, I remember the boss battle somewhat only because of the poker scene, Vaas/Mando was really the face of FC3.
Giancarlo Esposito done an amazing job as Gus through both shows. His dedication to the cold, sociopathaic character was amazing and I truely believe the shows wouldn't be nearly as good as they are without him.
Never seen Gus as sociopath but more on the psychopath scale. He literally had a boyfriend and flirts on the Gentleman's bar. He even listens to Mike.
@kta_0187 exactly. He can feel things, unlike a psychopath. He knows he is doing wrong but continues doing it. Unlike a psychopath which wouldn't have the capability to know he is doing wrong.

maybe Lalo knocked Fred out before lighting the building on fire but knowing Lalo...
Those between-episode transitions were fucking brilliant! Perfectly matched the show’s themes.

At first he appeared like the villain, but over time I felt like you understood why he was so mentally ill and had it in for Jimmy
@@Howesenberg That's also very true, the show still doesn't paint him as a cartoon supervillain and instead makes his antagonism understandable. Personally I still find his fall very satisfying, but I also do feel sorry for Chuck in many ways.

this show is so awesome man, at first I thought it was kinda dull and meaningless but as it goes on it all starts to fall into place just perfectly

I think it was pretty unambiguous that those pranks really really hurt Howard, mentally and financially and eventually lead to his death
17:36 it is funny to me that chuck, the super lawyer, doesn't know that you DON'T ANSWER THE DOOR if cops knock.
If they have a reason to come in, they will do so.

Well it’s 2:00 in the morning but I’ve seen this video to the end and it was absolutely worth it! Amazing video
Excellent work! Its really nice to have 6 years of show condensed into two hours. Helps put the whole thing into perspective.
I just wanna give props to whoever made this video… this is some seriously solid content… especially being over 2 and a half hours
Props received and appreciated
It’s wild Chuck really said “no, I refuse to believe you got better, so I’m going to force you back into crime by making it hard for you to get a regular job”.
the amount of editing and production gone into this video is impressive!! great vid
Thank you, I appreciate the feedback!
@@smpk9667 God yes I love that comparison! She even calls him either Saul or Gene, there is literally no Jimmy in that scene.
Werner was such a gentle and kind soul, he didn't deserve what happened and just the short clip of his death always makes me tear up :(
The Irene bingo scene and Werner’s death scene have been the most heartbreaking scenes for me so far
Werner was like Gale. He knew he was deeply involved in a vast criminal enterprise but was extremely naive. Mike killed Werner because he knew very well that Gus, Tyrus, and Victor would've also murdered his wife too.

When I saw the part with jimmy ruining this old lady's life, I genuinely broke into tears. It's such a cruel thing to do. Nice recap! The E.T. dying bit cracked me up!
fun fact: Bob Odenkirk (Jimmy/Saul) had issues with his heart while filming S6E08 and its scary to think some of the acting he did that ended up on tv was of him having those issues thanks to being scared of Lalo

Minor nitpick but at 1:33:05. It's not Something Stupid by Frank and Nancy Sinatra, it's a cover by Lola Marsh. The song wasn't actually even first recorded by Sinatra, but by Carson and Gaille.

@@chefaylmao3926Might want to get that schizophrenia checked out
2:32:46 I will defend Kim and Jesse meeting with my life.
I could say so many things. In a nutshell this is the best show Ive ever watched. It will always stick with me. There are so many moments. Great video
a very important thing you should consider about the breaking bad cameos is they first parallel black and white sauls response to sink deeper into crime, and secondly highlight just how saul jumped on working with Walter White despite Mike warning him on otherwise and being kidnapped, giving vital context for finale (especially for those who haven't watched breaking bad and wouldn't have know just how much the silly saul character helped walter)
I never found any of the BrBa cameos to be forced. They always served the plot beautifully.

You're so good at this I'm going to watch it twice
Thanks very much!
Thank you.
I appreciate the well thought out comments 💪
