    18:00 the reason why walt punched the paper dispenser in the toilet is because he was angry that he might actually live. He has done terrible things, he wanted to get money for the family and die. The longer he lives, the more damage he caused.

      The whole plan only works if he's going out on his shield. Now he's just a criminal who had a period of health issues. Can totally show up to a trial and go to prison. Gosh I so remember when this was all speculation. This is exactly like the conversations we had when it was airing. I almost prefer not knowing what is going to happen to Walt. That's how intriguing they made the journey. Nobody really wondered how it was going to end, we just wanted to see what would happen NEXT. Perfect writing.

    • @CODA96
      @CODA96 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. Walt never cared for the things he had done. He used his cancer as an excuse to cook meth and earn money for his family. With his cancer being gone, he had no excuse to cook meth anymore. After that, he only did it for himself. Thats why he punched it. Not because he thought he was doing terrible things.

      @@jamsya493 Thanks for succinctly explaining that the hatred for Skylar is rooted in misogynistic bullshit. You literally couldn't have put it better.
      Serious answer time: If you actually watched the show, you'll notice that Walter got an offer from his former colleagues/friends to pay off his medical bills VERY early on. It was a genuine offer, with no strings attached. He got into the drug trade after he turned them down for no other reason than pride. He did it for himself. He literally says it in the end, "I did it for me. I liked it." The writers make sure to make it VERY clear that Walter is not under any kind of REAL pressure to keep cooking drugs to get his family out of bankruptcy, that it's all his desire to feel important. It's kind of a major point. (Smh, fake fanboys...)
      Skylar's reaction in season 2 is in fact the reasonable way to react to your life partner lying to your face and gaslighting you. If you think she was being a 'bitch', please be sure to tell your take on this to any women in your life who know Breaking Bad, so they know to stay away from you.

    To quote: "We look straight down on Walt, as he tumbles into frame, lying flat on his back on the floor. His eyes stare up at us, lifeless. And yet, his final expression is one of faint satisfaction.
    Police officers approach him now. Four, six, eight of them. They approach him carefully, their guns drawn and aimed.

    39:55 I think the biggest reason that Gus killed Victor is what Walter brought up later on in the series --- Victor's action of learning how to cook was out of his place. Gus's empire consists of two major components: the knowledge behind making the product; and the brute force to secure and sell it. It was never Victor's job to cook meth for Gus but rather be the security force and part of the distribution process whereas Walter and Gale are cooks that should not have any connections to Gus's dealers. As a ruler, it's better to divide your subordinates with different skillsets, best if they are not aware of each other's existence. Because once Victor, a distributor and hitman, truly grasps the science behind the cooking, he can get rid of Gus whenever he pleases. This is demonstrated later on in the series as well. Once Todd's gang knows how to reliably produce the blue meth, they had no problem killing Walter. In a volatile organization such as this, having knowledge makes you an asset, having too much knowledge truly makes you a threat to the top dog and effectively a death sentence for yourself. This reminds me of Ancient China, namely the Qing Dynasty, princes and other royalties were stranded in the capital and not allowed to meet with major local authorities such as governors and generals.

    • @alexandertheok9610
      @alexandertheok9610 2 ปีที่แล้ว +68

      you make a good couple of points, but as far as I remember, Victor also checks to see if Gale is dead, right? I think another big reason for killing Victor was that some people saw him and the police got an accurate description of his face, so police finding and following Victor was just too big of a risk for Gus to take, thus he had to get rid of him.

    The reason the taped confession never comes back up is that it's not meant as a way to eliminate Hank, but to blackmail him into silence. It's a tool to ensure that if Walt goes down, he will take Hank with him, and as long as Hank doesn't turn him in, he won't release it.
    Hank needs Jesse and the buried money to prove that Walt was the mastermind behind the operation.

    I'm not sure if anyone has said this already but I finally understand why Jessie comes to the conclusion that Huell lifted the Ricin off of Jesse. As Jesse is waiting to be picked up, he realizes the dope he brought with him is gone. This is mentioned by Saul when Jesse attacks him saying, "I had Huell lift your dope. I told you I couldn't risk the guy not taking you." So Jesse puts it together that if Huell could swipe the dope off of him, he could have done the same with the Ricin. Now I will agree its still a leap for him to come up with that, but I don't think it's completely out of the blue.

    1:11:10 Actually Jesse realized that Walter poisoned Brock because Huell lifted his weed. So he made the connection with when he searched him before. That it could’ve been possible that given more time in his pockets he could’ve stolen the ricin cigarette when it went missing in season 4. That possibility was greater than any possibility of how Brock was mysteriously poisoned, especially seeing what Walter has been capable up till that point in time. So he realized Huell was a pickpocket basically and tied it to Walter.

      @pyropulse I disagree

    • @Predated2
      @Predated2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @pyropulse Except its not an inconsistency, nor a contradiction:
      Gus didnt directly kill a kid, he probably didnt even make the order to kill the kid. Odds are that he ordered his men to tie up loose ends. The difference is that up untill that point, Jesse thinks Walter was actually willing to kill a kid himself through ricin(when it was not). Gus wouldnt have cared about the difference, but Jesse did.
      Lets look back at the earlier time where he visits the meth junkies. Their kid was basically going to die, just like many other potential kids, because of meth that Walter and Jesse made. But that child's death would have been direct. Even if Walter's product was the direct cause for child neglect and heavy addicts maybe even killing their kids. It wasnt Walter who killed the kids. Neither did Gus. In both cases, it was their business that killed the kid.
      Giving the kid a poisoned cigarette with Ricin(from Jesse's perspective, Jesse never learns the truth), was Walter directly killing a kid. Let alone killing a kid just to get Jesse on his side, while the kid that died because of Gus was actively dealing drugs.
      So in short:
      Gus didnt directly cause the death
      The kid that died due to Gus was actively dealing
      Walter "killed" a kid to frame someone else, just to get Jesse back
      Jesse was established to not blame the death of kids on the original cause, but on the people who actually did the killing.
      Is it illogical from your POV? Sure, but from Jesse's character? It fits in line with his own morality.

    • @sullystpatrick
      @sullystpatrick 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @pyropulse It's easy to imagine how Jesse snapped over that.
      He's triggered from the last kid that was killed by Todd and at the time he was disturbed by how Walter shrugged it off.
      (you remember Walt was happily whistling the next day and it occurred to Jesse that Walt is basically a psychopath but he let himself deny it)
      And it was a mind fuck for Jesse to realize Walt was lying because think about how emotional and self-punishing Jesse was over the fact that he was originally about to kill Walter over Brock.
      Even we didn't know Walter was deceiving Jesse when it happened. For him to realize he'd been psychologically bamboozled and naive enough to trust Walt showed that he'd been just a fool/pawn the entire time, yet there he was about to be sent off to the sunset like a good little boy..
      That's the biggest slap in the face he received in the whole show.
      Well, up until Walt told him he let Jane die then called for his enslavement... That was a pretty big slap in the face too....

      that's the main theme. dealing / making drugs might feel victimless, because all you see is the money & economic opportunity. What you don't see is the harms in the worst offenders, the associated violence, etc.
      Kind of an archaic representation of the drug world these days (more of a 60s-80s take), but with meth & harder drugs like heroin, crack, cocaine possibly, the violence and downstream harms are quite real

    1:11:53 Hank never forgot about the confession tape, tho Walter making that tape was a mega brain play. But Hank realized he’d need some damn good evidence to refute the video if he ever wanted to get ahead of it and go to the DEA. And Jesse and his confessions were the perfect pieces of evidence for this, so he essentially was going to use Jesse to corner Walt and catch him before his DEA days inevitably ended. Not sure if someone else has already clarified this in the comments but I didn’t see it so I typed it out real quick. This video is awesome btw!

    1:11:15 - I also had a similar problem, but once I've seen this a few weeks ago I got it. When he's at Saul's talking about disappearing Huel is staring at him while he smokes a blunt, then Saul mentions that he can't be high or the whole operation will be for nothing and Jesse shows that he has some weed in his pocket. While getting out of Saul's office Huel (known for his fast hands) bumps into him (again, just as with the cigarette some time earlier). From all the things that Jesse forgets he always remembers to take his drugs (as a typical junkie) and when he doesn't see them in his pockets he knows that something fishy is up. The only person that could have taken it was probably someone in Saul's place, someone who bumped into him on his way out.
    Ps: As for the junkie thing I mentioned above, I know it because for a quarter of my life I was in a few bands etc with some junkies on board or as friends. They could forget their own birthdays, but always remembered where they stashed their weed.

    In season 5, Jesse remembered that the cigarette had disappeared, and only he and Walt knew about it.

    Watched this in increments every time I finished an episode of the show (my first viewing; just finished it all like a week ago). Such a phenomenal journey I had with this amazing piece of television, and it's a tad bittersweet that I'll never get to watch it again with anticipation of what would happen next. Glad I knew about this video at the right time, and I loved your funny and thorough breakdown.

      Yeah it was a little uneven and even weak at times in the first couple seasons. By the 3rd season they started to really hit their stride. It's also a beautiful character arc. So few shows have broken with tv tradition and stuck with the plan after becoming a hit. Most shows just try to milk every last dollar like that horrible Walking Dead franchise.

      @@slick3996 I mean I guess there's nothing wrong with it if they keep the show fresh, but I severely lost interest after Negan showed up and killed two of my favorite characters. Also the show went woke right around the same time and it was annoying as fuck.

    When you talked about the confession video, I think the main reason why Hank somehow stopped going after Walt was because Marie accepted payments to his medical treatment. It would have been easy for ABQ PD or DEA to look into the records and having the treatment being paid in full amounts. It would have made it seem like Hank did know of the money and there would loose his credibility to showcase he had no idea. Plus having Marie unable to literally explain things rationally would still have a red flag since she has a history of lying such as when she was caught stealing items and shoplifting. It would have been seen as a liability. Amazing video always listen to it when I’m running or biking !🙌🏽

      I felt that Hank realized he was dealing with someone with a genius IQ and nothing left to lose, truly diabolical and felt he may not be able to outsmart him but rather prove he did it by evidence.

    I would not consider Walt a hero by any stretch. We sympathize with him in the beginning, but he's generally not a good guy. I just finished my like 8th re-watch and I was surprised at how I viewed Walt this run. I actually sympathized with Skylar this time too. She really isn't as bad as people make her out to be (at least until the IFT fiasco).

      Walts main problem is his superiority complex. If his ego werent so massive and in constant need of satisfaction his entire life would be diffrent.

      Walter is a bad egg from the beginning. Like you say, he is sympathetic, as a relatively ordinary man forced to live a degrading and fulfilling life for his family, only to be threatened with cancer. But, the more you learn about his character and his backstory, the more you realize that not only is he an egotistical, selfish asshole, but that his pride and ego have always been what held him back. His spit from Gray Matter was almost certainly his own doing, some fight he couldn't let go of, and as a result he sold his shares for nothing. Even his family, which he claims to cherish above all else, isn't the family he wants; Skyler isn't the woman of his dreams, he wanted Gretchen; His son is disabled, and aloof; his daughter was both unexpected, and will probably never meet him, because of his cancer.
      I think one of the most interesting scenes is the scene where he talks to Walt Jr about his father. The trauma of seeing his father being so feeble and helpless, and of that being the only memory he has of him, motivates everything he does. He wants desperately to be seen as powerful, successful, enviable. He fears and detests the idea of being not in control of himself, or his own destiny, like his father. And when the idea of chemotherapy comes up, he thinks of his father, and rejects it outright. I think people often overlook how key that scene is to understanding who Walter White truly is as a person.
