    No access to the fuel pump without dropping the tank or cutting your own access hole. Gotta love those American engineers...

    Just a suggestion, you could just change the pump motor.

    Use Environmental splices. Heat shrink tubing in not water proof. So over time the water will get in there and after a few years the wires will rot and you will be back in there again. Environmental Splices are cheap on line. If you are intent on using heat shrink put some RTV on the wire, slide the heat shrink over it and shrink it. Also use non-corrosive RTV on it, corrosive RTV Smells like vinegar. So use automotive gasket RTV like Permatex Ultra Black. Only use RTV on wiring external to the tank as gasoline dissolves RTV. Thanks for sharing. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

    A hole on the floor just to change the fuel pump?
    That's GM for you, at least we should be grateful they make anything RWD that isn't a truck or sport car (I'm looking at you Ford)

    If it has timing belts then it's a 3.2L, which means it's an '03 or '04. Same engine as used in the Saturn L200. It's a different engine than the 3.6L timing chain eaters.Good luck with it. Those cars make me cringe.

    Maybe crimping the wires near the fuel tank is a safer option than soldering and heat shrinking. Just saying.....

    If its the v6 motor, beware of timing chain issues, it is an interference motor, but they have slack issues due to plastic tensioners snapping under-load causing the timing to skip and well you know.

    • @commodore665
      @commodore665 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's true , for some reason on some models , the chains were not manufactured to specifications , and could stretch , Holden Commodore 3.6 V6 engines had the same problem on some cars too .

    Did the same thing on an 03 Taurus Wagon that was basically given to me. Had a dead fuel pump. I went to drop the tank only to discover that it had a full tank of gas which was still relatively fresh. Cut a hole in the floor instead and replaced it that way then sealed the hole back up. Dropping an empty or almost empty tank seemed like a PITA, I wasn't about to go dropping a full one especially when the gas was still good.

      @janeames1513 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      bigbob..i had to do something like that on my 01 sable..future advice for you ..put a small piece of plywood on top of a floor jack and use that to lower the tank instead of ripping holes in the floor pan

    Jay Smart, if you see this, I hope you can help me. My husband installed an aftermarket pump in a 2003 CTS, but I cannot figure out the wiring harness hookups. The pump I bought came with no instructions on the wires, and they are very different from the harness. Anyone reading this help us? Thanks.

    • @leebarnes655
      @leebarnes655 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wiring harness should be 1 mm grey as 12 volt power to pump, 1 mm black or pink is pump ground. 0.35 mm purple is fuel level sender and 0.35 mm black is sender ground. You didn't tell us what color/size of wires you have from the new jack they supplied so can't help there.

    Be very very careful with those lights or anything u use when dealing with gas or gas tank or anything at all I seen and heard too that a garage was using one of those lights while dropping a gas tank in the bulb busted blew up the car in the garage because of the fumes and everything so strong I just wanted to say that's all I hate dealing with gas at all especially when having to drop and one the whole gas tank

    Not impressed with your hack job, you should have found center from underneath with a screw driver and then cut a circular hole with a cut-off wheel.........then use a piece of sheet-metal from a car that's larger than the whole you made...and use old-school threaded fender fasteners that look like large versions of speaker fasteners. You took a lot of torsional strength from the body-shell the way you hacked-it up Jay. You should have thought it out before you hacked it up Jay. If you had taken your time, your "one-off" access cover to the fuel-pump housing would have looked very Professional.

    • @lucidmind4205
      @lucidmind4205 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      D McNamara how is the way he cut it bad ? Would like to know

    • @dmcnamara9859
      @dmcnamara9859 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      6Raqq RAMBO:
      The corners should have been rounded with a large drill bit, hole-saw,cut-off wheel, or a hole punch kit...and then he should have used universal "clip-on" fender nuts and bolts to cinch-down an over-size sheet-metal cover. End result? little loss of torsional rigidity of the body-shell and a guarantee of weather,grime NOT finding its way into the car. Corners that are not rounded have very little strength....and tend to begin stress cracks that just grow with time.
      To start with,Jay should have found approximate center from underneath and used a screw driver,etc. and punched a reference mark with a hammer if other stamped reference points could not be found and used as a guide for the center of the fuel pump from above under the seat.
      Jay made the hole way too big than it needed to be. I should know....I made a fuel-pump access panel for my Yukon XL...unless you knew GM never made a access panel.....the access panel I made looks "factory"original.
      FYI....all hardware stores carry fender "clip-on" nuts.....as they have a wide variety of uses. Don't even need to go to a junkyard to get some off cars...if going to the junkyard is not your thing.
      From experience of making multiple access panels over the years on various cars....after you make the general shape of your oversize cover....draw it out (with a magic marker) on the car 1st while you are holding it down.... and check you have enough metal for the clip-on fender nuts (both car and cover) then;1 at a time drill thru the cover and car,insert fender nut and bolt and work your way around. It should take about 1 hour to mark, drill,install fender nuts on car and bolt down....Why 1 hour ish long? you'll want to primer and paint (allow to dry both steps) the edges of the car and new cover you made. 4-6 fender nuts should suffice for reasonable size access panel.
      Remember, your fender nut clips have only so much adjustment inward...so make sure the fender nuts center with holes you drilled for both cover and car....that's why it's important to draw your cover dimensions on the car 1st before drilling ;so you have a general reference point of where you need to drill. it's a patient one at a time deal....get sloppy and impatient....it will look like shit and none of holes will line-up to each other or with the clip-on fender nuts.
      To guarantee the hole and fender nut clips center where they need to be.....transfer the inner edges of the hole on the car to the access-cover...with one finger holding down on those reference lines draw out the fender nut....then drill sightly off center towards the cars hole on each one.

Edit...if you owe mortgage then you don't own that house the bank does
