This only let you know your getting no fuel to the motor. It does not tell if your fuel pump is bad or not. Just that the issue is in the fuel delivery system.which is the ecm, fuel pump relay, inertia switch, tank switch in some vehicles , fuel pump(s), fuel line fuel filter, fuel pump regulated, and fuel injectors
@@kennethcheesbrough6855 don’t forget to check for fuel even, heck that’s the first thing I’d check, I’ve seen many gm products float malfunction and get stuck on about 1/4 of a tank or even 3/4 of a tank and obviously the gauge quit…..

@@karitunes1 he did it to create content a bad fuel pump can be a number of things and it’s common sense to start with the cheapest things (relay and fuses) cause they’re cheaper then a new fuel pump if you don’t understand that you should be going to a mechanic lol this was a good video
I’m on the same page with you, but how does this verify It’s the fuel pump and not like a fuel filter or wiring? Because I recently within the last year or so change the fuel pump. Now I know that doesn’t matter. I just have a 99 ram 1500 and don’t wanna drop the tank if I don’t have to. I’d like to eliminate all other possibilities first. And yes it popped off starting fluid. Thanks 😊
this is right , as a matter of a fact when my truck stopped running and had ford garage check it a mechanic sprayed starting fluid in it almost the same way and it started , it was the fuel pump that was bad , the truck started after the starter spray was sprayed in . the fuel pump was replaced and runs good now. the reason maybe the guy unhooked the relay was to keep the truck from starting on purpose to show an example of what happens if no fuel is going to the engine , and that spraying starter fluid will help you check this type of situation. he is correct . .
I had a broken relay on a Chevy truck and didn't know it at the time and had to use starter fluid to start it up every time, almost replaced the fuel pump until I found out the relay was broke, so what I'm saying is that without the relay in when I sprayed starter fluid the truck would start and run and wouldn't cut out.
I would clarify that this only confirms a fuel starvation situation. This could be from a clogged fuel filter with a functional pump. One would have to test the pressure of the pump to verify the pump is the issue.
This doesn't always mean it's a fuel pump or fuel filter I thought the same thing but after replacing everything to do with fuel the pump filter pressure regulator pump relay fuses still doesn't wanna start but wants to start on starting fluid so I'm down to either fuel injectors aren't getting a pulse or their clogged but also something else is bothering me when I test the fuel pump relay and try to hear the fuel pump prime when key is turned to the on position relay doesn't click or fuel pump doesn't prime now If I use a jump wire on relay my fuel pump runs constantly but with that jump wire with fuel pump running I checked fuel pressure from valve after the pressure regulator fuel spits out very fast so its getting fuel pressure with jump wire but won't start still so back to injectors either not getting power to pulse which since my fuel pump relay won't click when I turn key is making me think it's electrical not getting power to the relay and what powers the relay pcm or ecu are next in line for electrical problems maybe I had an electrical problem this whole time and only thought I had a fuel related problem because I did this test spraying starting fluid so just because it wants to run on fluid doesn't always mean it's fuel related and in some cases on econiline vans have are bad grounds also saw a video of a guy who showed a bad ground but mine looks good from the bottom but I lift up the plastic above where the ground lead is attached underneath van and I see a bunch of rust so I'm wondering if I have a bad ground because of all the rust
@@cheeseburgers82 did you fix fuel problem. Electrical maybe camshaft or crankshaft position sensor(s). Used the starter fluid engine did start. Thinking fuel pump bad but gas leaking around fuel pump (flange)bad o ring/ gasket.
Did you ever find out what it was? It appears to me you have a problem with the connection of your ignition circuit to the fuel pump. Usually they don’t run together but might be closely related to the dependence of the crank shaft position sensor

Thisw 2works ok as an early test. It proves that you have spark. It eliminates that entire system. How ever it only proves that the fuel system is not working. Mor4e testing needs to be done to prove what fuel component is the malf. Many things can cause the pump not to run.
Yes but the first thing you check is the relay/fuses start the cheapest is that doesn’t fix it then you replace the fuel pump assembly it’s cheaper and easier

Solution One!! You’re absolutely right. Ford Junk! If you miss treat a Toyota or Honda or Nissan... it’ll be awhile before it starts to give you trouble but even if you treat a Ford good it’ll still find away to mess up on you.. That’s just my experience...
Be careful not to use too much starter fluid, especially when the engine is not cranking while spraying the fluid. My son literally blew up his intake manifold.
Your not 100% right, what you have determined is that you have a fuel delivery problem. Corroded injector harness, blown fuse controlling injector, harness at fuel pump and a few others. Describing it this way may lead DYI’s on the wrong path and pull tank , put new pump in and still no start. Starting fluid , as others have said may not be good if used incorrectly, get air intake cleaner or injection cleaner, less volatile but still combustible to achieve what your describing and greatly reduces accidents
This is the most helpful video I've ever watched with a truck different than mine. Have an 88 f250 with this issue and this video told me exactly what I need to know
A CRANK NO START does not always mean a bad pump, you also have to check the basics SPARK, FUEL, AIR COMPRESSION as well, short to ground is the ecm commanding the fuel pump on when the key switch is turned on.
But, this video is about fuel related causes, not the others... Even though this method does verify spark and compression (If it fires with starting fluid)
Well he obviously ruled spark and air if it starts but does his video mean its the fuel pump not necessarily i like to think of it of starting the investigation in the right direction ruling spark and air and focusing on fuel like pump relay short in the wire to the pump etc…
I use this process as well but it's really just a start to the Diag process as many other parts on the Fuel side or could be the issue, I wouldn't just say Bad Pump, but sometimes it is just that.
Brake cleaner works great too. Ss long as you buy the brake clean that says "Extremely Flammable " on the label. Not a lot needed and I usually crack the throttle about half way or a bit less so the spray gets by the butterfly in the throttle body.
Can fuel pumps intermittently fail? Like sometimes they work sometimes they don’t? My ranger wasn’t starting and I couldn’t hear it priming when I turned the key, the next day i heard it prime and then it started. Would that be an electrical issue or fuel pump still
Had an 89 nustang thar would shut down sometimes and just wait 20 minutes, and it would start again. Swapped out the pump, and no more issues. I think it was getting hot and waiting and gave it time to cool down.
My problem is intermittent and occurs when I shut the car off between 30 seconds and 5 minutes. After 5 minutes it always starts. How do you know the difference between a bad fuel pump and a bad fuel pump relay?
Good video👌May I suggest that Some cars (usually diesel) have so-called fuel pump pressure regulator control valve or "suction control valves" on the "high pressure" pump. It may be worth checking these as well to ascertain it is these, and not the main pump itself, that are faulty. They can be just as expensive-- if not more -than the pump itself, as I found out on my old Nissan Primera YD22dti which needed a pair of them rather than one.😪
I use this method as a diagnostic tool on a petrol engine to check if the ignition system is working, it 'could' help in diagnosing a bad fuel pump ? But it's not a hard and fast diagnosis that 'you have a bad fuel pump' there's a few more variables of what could be wrong ..... great video though 👍👍
What if the 25.00 cam sensor is bad. The cam sensor is the main input for the injectors. A fuel pump module can run 3 to 400.00. Using starting fluid only tells you if you are or aren't getting fuel in the cylinders. Remove timing and compression questions. I use starting fluid as one diagnostic tool. Not the only one.
Pick up if the cam sensor is working? Short answer ...yes. cam sensor codes are P034x or on the 0340 to 345 range. So if there is a fault, it might. Yes, there is a BUT. Sometimes the sensor is intermittent or barely within parameters and it won't set a code. So the diagnostic steps I use are 1. Starting fluid 2. Pressure test fuel system 3. Noid light to check injector circuit. These steps will give you a picture of what's happening.
So what does it mean when you do this and it actually runs but then stops running after you turn it off and let it sit? Then doesn't even start running after you try this again?
ok here is a good one....same scenario same symptoms almost dropped the tank off my truck (2001 f150) to replace fuel pump. problem..................I was using a spare aftermarket key that the truck would not recognize so it would cut off the fuel system. The kicker is that sometimes it would work fine it just would not always accept the key.
That sucks but very good that you figured it out! That could have got real expensive if you replace parts as a form of troubleshooting like some ppl do. 👍
Im surprised no one has said anything about the possibility of a clogged fuel filter? In most cars you can hear the fuel pump prime once the key is turned into the accessory position. If you have a bad relay/fuse the pump wont kick in and you wont hear it prime at all. A good indicator of a bad or clogged filter is if you can still hear the pump trying to prime but makes an other than 'normal' sound for your particular vehicle. An extremely clogged filter will cause a fuel feed issue bad enough to prevent your car from not only starting but continuing to run (even if you kickstart the motor with starting fluid).
Diesel truck yes gas not so much In fact I have never seen a car with a filter so plugged it would not at least start. & pumps do not run in the ACC position.
How would i check fuel filter on chrysler sebring 2004 cause its doing what you said i can hear pump trying to prime but its not as strong or loud as usual its more weak and quiet does that mean its just clogged or fuel pump bad or going bad but either way car wont start now it just shut off while driving at 60 mph
Good video very educational. Here's my situation my car wouldn't start. Use starting fluid CPL times started then died. Tried one more time fired up I let car run to engines temp. Now starts again I have a manual aswell. Any help I appreciate fuel pump going bad?
Is it a carb cleaner. Normally id just buy 1 liter of diesel,disconn3vt the fuel pump and soak it inside rhe diesel for a day..viola the engine cranks.....however id check the fuel pump relay.cos when i disconn3cted the hose from the assembly.no fuel gushing out
Before I change the fuel pump..... I have followed all your trouble shooting advice (short of using a pressure gage). I can hear the fuel pump when the key is turned over to accessory it sounds strong and when my wife turns the key over it does not sound as strong. To be sure, should I spend the money on a pressure gage? Thanks for a great video.
Men obviously can just turn the key strongly and given that universal fact pump runs strong, unlike women using machine causing dainty pumping by dainty key turning with feminine energy contaminating manly machine.
I just had this problem. I pulled the fuel pump fuse, and it was good. This is the first thing you should do. Then check voltage at the relay terminals which were good for me. Then I changed my relay and everything started working. Then I plugged my old relay back in everything worked. The connection between the relay and the housing pins oxidized. Just had to pull and reset the relay.
I tapped on the fuel tank a few times with a small hammer and my dodge fired right back up. And used a LITTLE started fluid, reason being I've heard of engines getting ruint if you spray to much
Starting fluid should only be used in dire situations. It removes the oil from your rings and your cylinders are not lubricated while cranking. A better way to check for fuel is to turn on key to AC, which will start the pump. By pressing in the Schrader Valve by the carb/injection sys which looks like bike tire valve you should get fuel coming out. If not you have a bad relay, broke positive or ground wire, clogged line or filter and lastly a bad fuel pump,. I do not recommend this method.
@@n8eman then loosen then fuel line at the throttle-body or carb. If no fuel is flowing when key/power is on, out of that line then you need to work backward and check all the wiring including grounds. I always look for positive power connections first. If you have power, whatever you are trying to fix needs a replacement. IE, relay, fuse, breaker, motor, box, board or control unit. Many time I find a corroded ground to be the culprit.
This! Using ether just shows that you have no restrictions from the TB/carb and you have spark. Nothing more he’ll you could do this and start the engine and just be out of gas lol
that describes my 2001 ranger to a T. When the weather is warm, it starts just fine. Once we get cold temps, it will only start if I use starting fluid. but once it starts, it runs just fine. Is my fuel pump really the problem? The fuel pump must be pumping fuel once it starts running because it doesn't die.... Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! FYI, I have replaced the fuel filter.
This test just tells you if the problem is ignition or fuel, that's it. You still have to prove out the rest of the fuel system before you condemn the fuel pump it's self. If it doesn't run on a can of fuel pump you can start to look for ignition problems.
Like supply Voltage to Injectors, Tripped Inertia Switch, Bad Ground to Fuel Pump, Heck even a Bad ECM not triggering the Injectors, I wish it was always that simple but does give you a small start in the Diagnostic Quest. I used it all the time to save time.
@@dustinbowls8887 unplug the bad relay, get a small jumper wire or paperclip and jump the two connections. for my car, it's the top two on the left of the plug my fuel pump relay just died on me again so I've had to do that a few times
Easy way to check as suggested by ATG & me: 1. Required two people. 2. Open the gas cap 3. Turn key to #2 but do not start the car 4. Place ear next to gas lid & listen to the fuel pump making a sound 5. If you can hear the hum sounds, then rule that pump is good. 6. You replaced that Fuel Filter ever 3 years? Open output hose & input into 1 gal milk & start
Have someone prime it and see if relay clicks. Test relay with power and ground, or swap a known good relay in to test. Like if the AC relay is the same swap them.
Just to clarify, the FUEL PUMP RELAY has to be removed FIRST? Before doing this test? My situation, I have spark, turns over fine, but spraying starting fluid like you show gets nothing. I'll try removing the relay tomorrow and see what happens. EDIT: Turns out it was the MAF sensor that was dirty. I removed it, blew it out with compressed air, reinstalled and my truck started right up.
kinda just proves the vehicle has fire don't wont some one to replace a $300 fuel pump over a relay or ground or bad injectors this is a great diagnostic tool but before replacing your pump test the pump with a meter /test light to see if you have good power and ground if you don't have power it could be due to relay fuse ground etc.
He didnt say it wad definitively a bad fuel pump. He said bad fuel pump or no fuel situation. You just made a really long explanation of what he said/did in a nuttshell. Diagnose a bad fuel pump or no fuel situation. If it fires you no its in the fuel delivery. If it dont, your looking elsewhere, like no spark. Exactly what was shown here/said here
WD-40 a bit safer than starting fluid. to my surprise it works well on 4 stroke gas engines. Diesel? not so much on cold start, but it helps & leaves a little lube that ether [starting fluid] removes.
Would this also verify bad injectors? My fuel pump is new and fuel pressure is normal. Crank no start situation, replace crankshaft position sensor, checked, put new spark plug wires, test light shows power to the spark plugs. Soon replacing temp sensor and cleaning injects I guess.
I had a bad fuel injector in cylinder 5. I got that taken care of. Before that I had the fuel filter changed. After the fuel filter was changed, the car started sputtering and will die out once it warms up. Is this caused by the fuel pump?

While there is some useful information here, there is more to be done to prove that the fuel pump is bad and need to be replaced. It could be the relay, or a blockage in the line. It would be a shame of somebody replaced a working pump based on this video.
So what if mine cranks no starts. But starts with starting fluid as this one did, but mine will stay running once started with starting fluid. What’s your thoughts on that? It’s a foxbody mustang 5.0.
91PHS10 The spray bypasses the complete fuel system to show it has a spark and will start with fuel. Could be the relay still, since it doesn't need the relay to start, with the spray.
@@91PHS10 he took the relay out to simulate a bad pump dude. If you did this with the relay in then it could be the relay or something else like injectors

@@matthewtoomer2181 you're wrong... And you've been wrong several times basically for the same reason... So I replaced the fuel pump its in the gas tank along with the filter and regulator, its an assembly. It still stalls after about 25 minutes. It will start back up after a 30 minute cool down and run another 25 minutes. Any help? So with the starting fluid it will start for a few seconds. My guess is the ecm is not sending a signal to the fuel pump after it warms up.
It can be multiple things actually. Mine is doing that right now but my fuel pulp turns on and my car will run until you shut it off then there is no power to it anymore. Last time my car wouldnt start and wasnt getting any fuel it was because of my egr. It can be many problems, it can also be getting vapor locked from the canister.
Just to add on to this, make sure no fuel line is touching anything hot. If you you can use a hanger to space it off of the heat. It can make it vapor lock. Check all sensors not just the relay. Make sure your fuel filter is not clogged as well and that there are no tears in your wiring.
I am having the same problem with my 2011 Hyundai Sonata it turns over but want start I was told it could be the fuel pump relay are the crank shaft position sensor . Does this sound right to you?
Vietnam Vet Could be... if it tries to fire with this method it's not getting fuel for some reason... Some computer may use the crank sensor signal as an input to fire injectors when it knows engine is turning.

Thanks 😊
this is right , as a matter of a fact when my truck stopped running and had ford garage check it a mechanic sprayed starting fluid in it almost the same way and it started , it was the fuel pump that was bad , the truck started after the starter spray was sprayed in . the fuel pump was replaced and runs good now. the reason maybe the guy unhooked the relay was to keep the truck from starting on purpose to show an example of what happens if no fuel is going to the engine , and that spraying starter fluid will help you check this type of situation. he is correct . .
How much did the fuel pump replacement cost at the mechanic? I'm thinking about pulling the bed off of my ford and replacing the pump myself.

Great to hear!
I would clarify that this only confirms a fuel starvation situation. This could be from a clogged fuel filter with a functional pump. One would have to test the pressure of the pump to verify the pump is the issue.
Most people try and replace the fuel filter before they test this.

Starting fluid should come with a predominant warning label on the can.

🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
I use this process as well but it's really just a start to the Diag process as many other parts on the Fuel side or could be the issue, I wouldn't just say Bad Pump, but sometimes it is just that.
Brake cleaner works great too. Ss long as you buy the brake clean that says "Extremely Flammable " on the label. Not a lot needed and I usually crack the throttle about half way or a bit less so the spray gets by the butterfly in the throttle body.
Be very careful using brake clean. This will and can create phosgene gas which amounts to nerve Gas!
Can fuel pumps intermittently fail? Like sometimes they work sometimes they don’t? My ranger wasn’t starting and I couldn’t hear it priming when I turned the key, the next day i heard it prime and then it started. Would that be an electrical issue or fuel pump still

So what about no start but starts with starting fluid and will continue to run fine until shut off?
Paul Parsons Correct. A good indicator engine is not getting fuel. Thanks for watching.
Will an OBD reader pick that up?
Pick up if the cam sensor is working?
Short answer ...yes. cam sensor codes are P034x or on the 0340 to 345 range. So if there is a fault, it might.
Yes, there is a BUT.
Sometimes the sensor is intermittent or barely within parameters and it won't set a code. So the diagnostic steps I use are
1. Starting fluid
2. Pressure test fuel system
3. Noid light to check injector circuit.
These steps will give you a picture of what's happening.
I have check the relays or fuses On the open road it runs beautiful like a new vehicle Problems develop at low speed under 40 mph.
Mine have same problem what did you do?
So what does it mean when you do this and it actually runs but then stops running after you turn it off and let it sit? Then doesn't even start running after you try this again?
There's a lot more it could be besides the pump. Filter, pressure regulator to make a couple
ok here is a good one....same scenario same symptoms almost dropped the tank off my truck (2001 f150) to replace fuel pump. problem..................I was using a spare aftermarket key that the truck would not recognize so it would cut off the fuel system.

Probably you had a light engine flood situation. The starter fluid helped starting once. So problem "solved". ;-) EGR has nothing to do with it.

By gally this guy is A genius!
The video is old, but I only needed yesterday. One spray was enough to start the engine . Now I confirmed that I have fuel pump problem.
Or it could be injection, pressure regulator, fuel filter, pinched or broken fuel line. Or you could just be out of fuel.
I do not recommend this method.
what if there is no schraeder valve?
@@n8eman then loosen then fuel line at the throttle-body or carb. If no fuel is flowing when key/power is on, out of that line then you need to work backward and check all the wiring including grounds. I always look for positive power connections first. If you have power, whatever you are trying to fix needs a replacement. IE, relay, fuse, breaker, motor, box, board or control unit. Many time I find a corroded ground to be the culprit.

that describes my 2001 ranger to a T.

It will start back up after a 30 minute cool down and run another 25 minutes. Any help? So with the starting fluid it will start for a few seconds. My guess is the ecm is not sending a signal to the fuel pump after it warms up.
Just parly soak the air filter with gas. Reasemble and crank. Itll run a bit longer that way.
