    Thank you for the very instructive video. I’m 75 years old and ride a 750GS. Had a very bad experience in “sugar sand” and thereafter was terrified of sand.
    Began to practice on a sand road close to home. Your tips were very helpful, particularly using second gear, building and keeping momentum - changed everything. Now I enjoy “defeating” the sand road that previously intimidated me.
    Thank you

    I was just on a steep uphill climb on an FSR, I was in 3rd going about 45-50 kph. I came around a bend where there was a dry sand hill wash out on the road. It was a surprise to start swimming all over the road, but keeping up the speed and staying committed made all the difference. of course it was intimidating when I came back down, but I had no other choice than to commit and maintain. Fear is our own worst enemy.

    I really liked that you described and rode this on a bike equipped with typical ADV tires that many/most of us will have on our bikes - a 50/50 tire. Many other videos on this topic are done with off-road biased (full knobby tires). I realize that those could be of significant help to running in the sand, but the average ADV rider will probably have something more akin to a 50/50 tire if they plan to be anywhere near sand. Thanks!

    Great tips here, living in AZ plenty of sand to contend with, I’d add that its super important to make sure your traction control plays into the throttle control, I had to keep mine at the lowest level, level 1 to keep it from taking the power away which robs your momentum in sand, momentum is key and I’ve had my fair share of dumping the bike but I’ve learned a lot from just getting out there & doing it, great instructions brother.

    This is all excellent advice as are your other videos and is normal practice for riding off-road in general. What would be a good companion video is to see you riding that sand with a loaded ADV bike with 40-60lbs of gear, and full riding gear. That is a completely different animal compared to a naked bike with just a rider.

    S U P E R B ... component elements breakdown. I especially like what you pointed out regarding tall(er) gearing. With all the talk about specialty tires for EACH surface, I notice (with a smile) that most instructors appear on heavy bikes with ~50:50 or 70:30 tires! Maybe that's just 'good' for business? 😋
    One topic about which I've seen NO guidance is: when to bail out i.e. when/HOW to get AWAY from a bike going down?

    This is a very good video for sand riding i use to have this natural habit of slowing down on hard pack before accelerating as soon as im coming into softsand and now im re learning these skills for my trip to africa next year.
    Also you say 50/50 Tires now I know the Africa twin adventure sport in ireland comes with karoo Street but I prefer the karoo 3 now they are karoo 4 .and I don't do offroad on tires unless they are 80/20 offroad/onroad . So when I buy my African adventure bike next year I'm pulled between the tenere world raid or Africa twin adventure sport 1100

    • @SedlakOffroadSchool
      @SedlakOffroadSchool  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, same techniques apply on the lighter bike. On the 250, leaning back when riding through deep sand will have a bigger impact because the bike is lighter, so riding with your hips a littler further back will be beneficial.

    Coming from Trials the only point I don’t agree with is holding/pressing the bike with the legs. I keep them open, let the bike play and steer with foot pressure on the pegs.

    • @waynejohnstone3685
      @waynejohnstone3685 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’m a new rider, half the vids say grip the bike w knees, other half say stay loose. Personally staying loose was much easier for me through rocks and mud, have to try the sand trail near me. Is there a rule about gripping w knees on different terrain? I’m on a wr250 so a bit different.

    •  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@waynejohnstone3685 Not really. The bike will move with obstacles (rocks, sand, mud, steps, whatever) while you are stable. If you try to hold it down with your legs, knees or hands, you will move with the bike and will have to compensate to regain equilibrium and stance. You will be all over the place. If instead, you steer with your feet and stay loose, you will be very stable while the bike leans, jumps, moves downward or upward. Practice leaning the bike in turns while you stay vertical, make figure eights. Then do it in an easy incline with no obstacles, this is harder. Increase the gradient of the slope. You can also practice on obstacles on a straight line, let the bike come up and down while you remain centered and relaxed. Take your time, breathe, enjoy and relax. See how the bike has better traction when you are centered. Push or let your ankles down, this will relax your calves and give you more traction and control. Once you've managed that, concentrate on your eyesight, look ahead, where you want to go. Try it and let us know.
