    Lower psi on tyres
    Read the dunes; look at the lowest elevation on drops by know which side to land on
    Keep body positioning towards the rear more
    Last when you land jumps always land with momentum as the sand is softer than dirt and this will keep the bike straight and steady

    Dune riding(on a good bike) is like medicine for the soul! Someone at Little Sahara, OK made me a flag mount first time i took a real bike, He took a piece of strap metal, 12 to 14 inch or so of 1/8 inch thick stock. put it in a vice and twisted around 90 degrees on one end using a big crescent wrench, and drilled a hole on twisted end just big enough for flag mounting bolt. 2 hose clamps to wheel side of silencer, a wala , a perfect flag mount . Best 10 bucks i ever spent at the dunes. That design is what I still use to this day. Made a bout 7 to 10 over the years to fit each bike specific. Just checked dimensions of latest one i made. 15" by 1.75" by .175 with a .5" hole. Obviously you want no sharp edges, so fillet the hell out of it. Rides on inside side of silencer(tire side) held on by 2 or3 hose clamps. I run an 8ft flag with a spring. You will drop your bike, so the last thing you're going to need to worry about is flag setup at that point. Video is great, but that set up with the axle is my least favorite design, pretty sure I would be kicking flag pole and mount all day while riding, not to mention it's not high enough to get into park I go to, Flag has to hit top end of gate to be allowed. Drilling a hole in rear fender works in a pinch, but don't put flag in center, it will bonk you in the head all day long. Do your homework before you go to the dunes. That's about the last place you want to be fixin shit. One last tip, no such thing as too much power or traction in the dunes. Deep sand robs about 50 percent of your power. My favorite setup was a 95 cr500 with 10 paddle, but 450r with 10 paddle is close second(in some ways far superior, easier starting, better suspension and smoother motor) . Remember, if you can't be careful, have fun! Cheers and good luck;)

    My tip: FIRM UP YOUR SUSPENSION. If you ride trails and sand like I do, you’ll need to ramp up a lot of your clickers to make the handling respond better in soft/dry conditions! Wet sand is a whole different story.

    250 two strokes work amazing at the dunes with a paddle. 450s work so much better with sand knobbies, you get way more feel in corners and overall better handling. Sure, you might be not be able to beat the guys with paddles in a uphill drag race, but I think it is worth it.

    FUEL! And LOTS of it! I have a separate chain and sprockets for the dunes for my bikes, (KTM 525sx currently). Expect to run a longer chain to clear swing arm with a paddle and have an extra shock mudguard as it will be eaten by the paddle. Dune chain is a DID ert2 that is barely lubed and well cleaned before sand ride. STIFF suspension set up is key. Run an 8 paddle for 125s and 250f bikes and 10 for built 250s and 450f.

    Watch out for the crest of a dune. A dune that looks 6 feet high can have a 30 foot drop that you won't see until you launch into space😎. I was driving past some dunes and I saw a man trying to load up his quadrunner but he kept falling so I helped him. Then he said he rode off a big crest and was worried about his back. He got in his pickup and I led him to our fire department "tiny town". They put him on a board and took him to a hospital because they thought he broke his back!! I had someone watch his stuff and the ambulance hauled him away. I never knew how that turned out. My point is if you don't know what you're doing simply learn to read the dunes and don't push your luck. 😎

    Read the dunes. I can't stress this enough watch for sudden dips or even shadows. and don't go fanging around an area ur not familiar with.
    my first time riding in the dunes me and mate hit a sudden wash out we didn't see till we were right on it. I went over in the shallow part and managed to stay on the bike while my mate on the other hand hit it in the deep part and stacked. he ended up having to be airlifted to hospital with a broken collar bone, 4 shattered ribs and potential internal bleeding.
    Also another tip watch out for vehicles I'm not sure what it's like in the states but here in AUS we have 4wds tearing up the dunes aswell. and most of them do the right thing and use a sand flag ETC but you get the cocks who just gun it up the dunes with no flag or anything and the only time u see them Is when they pop over the dune. so watch out for the Dick heads aswell.

    About the tires and what bike you ride. A lower power or 2 stroke maybe go with a tire that has less paddles so that a 2 smoker or smaller 4 stroke can spin it to get to the power range better. I ride a built 450 so I really like a 10 paddle Dunatic. It has all the power to spin more grip with more paddles. I good one also is an 8 paddle Kings turbo .
    Throttle is your friend ! Sand is really squirrelly like pea gravel on a street bike. When your moving good and on top the sand is good, half ass the throttle and that front will dig in and move the bike everywhere under you. If you can ride bike on sand then you can ride anything.
    Be in shape. Riding casually on sand is more physically demanding than practice on a track or a day on the trails. It's more rewarding though. Have fun and be safe.

    My tip for riding at the sand dunes... Avoid other people. You can't concentrate on the sand if you are constantly looking out for all the jack-wagons around you. It goes with "don't ride alone". Have your buddy or small group, but when you see others or other groups, move away.

    Hey I’m new to biking and want to be a beast in the dunes, what’s the best beginner bike and setup to feel great in the dunes

  • @aw9680
    @aw9680 ปีที่แล้ว

    The most important thing about riding at the sand dunes is learning how to read the sand. Find a veteran who has been riding sand for a long time and ask for advise. Best is to have a ride-along. It takes time and lots of stopping and taking about where you are and what you see, but in the long run, it's totally worth the education.
    Sand can be extremely dangerous on a bike. I've been riding for several decades now and still get caught off guard and surprised by the constantly changing nature of the dunes.
    I was almost killed once by someone who was not paying attention and trying to do something he thought was cool. I didn't see them until the last second and their spotter wasn't doing their job. Sand rail vs motorcycle means that the sand rail wins. I walked home but my bike didn't.

      Just like riding any type of sand, momentum and speed my friend, the more of that you have the better and easier it is. Lots of wide open throttle especially if you do not have a paddle tire. I also use my clutch more than other terrain, rather than down shifting when I know I need to be in that gear I'll slip the clutch for more power rather than downshift. Find your flow, be consistent with your speed, only brake if it's actually needed, the more you can flow in the dunes the more enjoyable it is.

      Gearing down means to change the sprockets so that your bike has less top speed but better acceleration. To do this you want to change to less teeth in the front sprocket and more teeth in the rear sprocket. Usually just one tooth less in the front and two or three more in the rear.

If you ever get a chance, try out a 350 in the dunes, because that motor revs so high you don't have to shift as much and I actually really liked the 350 at the dunes. There was one jump in particular I was having to shift a gear higher on the 450 and I noticed my friend on the 350 was somehow clearing it better than I was, so I swapped bikes and figured out he was able to do the same jump with one less shift and just revving her out.

    Don't mount the flag on your bike! If you do be prepared to get frustrated I've tried it for years. Zip tie it to your backpack or chest protector.

      Jake Jones I've rode the dunes a for years on a 450 mounted to my axle, made a guide for it that I mounted to the fender. I had a flag last 3 years until I had a pretty big crash and it finally broke

      I also don't like having the flag on the bike because is makes it harder to get on and off the bike, but having the flag on your person completely eliminates this struggle for short guys. I always thought it was super dorky to have the flag mounted to a back pack, but now that I have tried it I will never go back. You do you but im completely done messing with the axle or rear fender.

      Legally, at Glamis anyway, the flag has to be on the bike, not the rider.

    I don't think a paddle is a must I ride in coos bay Winchester Florence etc. And there sand can get really soft and deep and ovbisly u don't get and instant start but it makes it so ur bike don't bog out and it's way better wit a nobbies for cornering the a paddle is this all just my opinion

    You missed the single most important tip there is to riding dirt bikes in the dunes; TAKE MOST OF THE AIR OUT OF YOUR TIRES!

      Not with a paddle tire paddles are run at about 30 psi

    Don't even ride a 2 stroke in the dunes not worth it, also don't use this whip setup he has it's terrible just breaks off or gets caught in the wheel and it sits to low to be helpful. Drill a hole in a old side panel by the seat above the exhaust pipe and mount it in there with washers. Also a huge riding tip lean back alot in the sand and ride loose.

    Flags on bikes was another dumb idea by people that do not ride. No mater how you mount them, when moving the flag is always lower than the riders head. Add in lean angle, bumps, etc and they are useless. Would have been better to mandate orange helmets.

      Andrew Barada true but having a paddle tire gives you a lot more traction.

    • @5axmachine167
      @5axmachine167 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not necessary, but it's a much better experience when you have a paddle tire.
