Hey Jesse! Keep up the great work! Love the videos on the 6.5's. It's a seriously underrated and underappreciated engine. I just bought a 1995 GMC Suburban 2500 with a 6.5 and your videos have been a tremendous help! I'm already at 266k miles and hope to get a lot more out of it. As a first time diesel owner, I've already learned a lot from your stuff! Many thanks!

Hey brother. I just bought a 1999 gmc Savana 3500 6.5. it was running and would stall, but I knew about the PMD issue, so for $1000, I went for it. Problem is that we started trying to relocate and didn't bring the right tools, so we were going to risk it and drive it home. But it wouldn't turn over. The accelerator wasn't doing anything at all. I figured it has to be pmd, so today I replaced and relocated it and went to start and still the same issue, but I noticed it had a 'service throttle' warning on the dash only when I pushed the accelerator most of the way down.It literally felt like it was running fine aside from the stalling so I don't know what happened. One thing I notice replacing the pmd was an unattached little tube just above the fuel pump. I tried to examine it but it was so brittle it broke instantly. So maybe that was an essential line? I think when we attempted to relocate the pmd the day before, we might have somehow broken that tube, because 20 minutes before we started doing anything, we had the truck running. Any chance you can give me some advice on what I need to do for diagnostics?

Jessie, first let me say that I appreciate what you're doing for the 6.5 community. Now I need to correct you on a couple things that are driving me crazy about this video. First the "optical bump" does NOT add more fuel. It is ONLY a timing adjustment. I would STRONGLY DISCOURAGE anyone from doing this without first knowing and adjusting the base timing if needed. Secondly, it is called an optical sensor for a reason- there are no magnets o. The tone ring. It "sees" those marks on the tone ring, hence "optical" sensor. Lastly, and this is important, BUY A TRIPOD! I have to take dramimine before watching your videos. Keep sharing your knowledge, but keep gaining new knowledge too.

Truck is looking great! Thanks for the info. From your description of how your truck operates I think the previous owner bumped the optical sensor on mine. I have the same issue going downhill
sir you have some good video's and i have learn alot on the 6.5 .. I have a 03 workhorse with a v8 gm 6.5 diesel motor in it. people are showing trucks and suv but mine is a step van... is there a differnce between a 2.5 ton pick up and a 2.5 ton package truck?
I appreciate it man thank you, just trying to help you all out where I can. As far as I know between the two there isn't too many difference, but then again I haven't worked on a whole lot of the step van platforms at all
Great job Jesse! I bumped mine about 3 years ago and totally agree with you. It really didn’t make a huge “feel it in the seat of your pants” difference. The biggest difference came with the turbo upgrades. I never have experienced that “dead pedal” symptom in my truck but have heard complaints about it from other owners. I also run a #9 chip and a 3 bar boost sensor.
Thank you man, I appreciate it. Definitely agree with you, the mod really isn't worth the risks and there are plenty of other mods to do to squeeze the power out of them 👍 I believe the symptom I'm running into is I may have bumped it a smidge too far but where I am planning to rebuild the entire truck I'm just gonna run it as is for the time being.
@@chrisgillespie7194 thank you Chris, I appreciate that. So far so good, few bumps in the road here and there but nothing that has broken the bank yet hahaha
What’s up man, love the vids. I have a 6.5 with about 87k on it. Black and gray smoke when driving, was losing power around 25-30mph, then it would kind of sort itself out. Then a couple weeks ago it just wouldn’t get much power, kinda capped at maybe 10mph. Sounds terrible too. I’ve been told it’s something along the lines of fuel delivery, but I replaced the PMD and still having the same problem.
I like how you take time to explain to your viewers about things it's nice that you take the extra time to explain I bought a 1998 gmc k2500 6.5 and it is very hard to start once it's started it runs well but every time I cold start it I have problems I had the computer on it and I get a injection pump failure how can my pump have a failure code if it's still runs
Thanks man I greatly appreciate you taking the time to watch the videos and thank you for your support of the channel. The truck still may be running fine however codes are just to let us know that it's seeing a problem when upon starting or running. With an injection pump code it could be seeing that it's not reading timing upon first start but it's able to read timing off of the crankshaft sensor which works in conjunction with the optical sensor in order to read time correctly
Thanks Jessie for so much great information. I just bought a 1998 gmc c3500 dually with a 6.5l and im working on the upgrades your recommending. I was pulling a trailer up a long hill and I've noticed the engine getting hot and all of a sudden i lost power and the engine cut off. It would crank but no start so i remembered how when the PDM gets to hot it will cause this. I ordered one while i was waiting on the side of the road from Amazon a place called badger diesel and it arived the next day. While installing it i noticed 2 of the pins on the plug were set all the way back and not making contact , would that have caused it to prematurely burn out, it ran really well with out an excessive load. The other owner mounted it on the side with a heat sink but it was super hot when it died. Last question, i moved the new one to the front of the vehicle next to the driver side headlight under the header panel. In your opinion is that a wise move and should i be concerned about it getting wet.
Thank you I bought a 96 GMC Sierra with the 6.5 and it idles high after changing the pmd after reving erratic and then shuts off so I am now going to replace the optical sensor and see if that fixes the issue so can start driving my truck. Let me know what you think please thanks 🙏🏽
No you're the one that makes the channel man because you're the one that sisters and makes the videos and lets us know what not to do or what to do so you're better at it than anybody else
I try to be as informative as possible man, I know I do miss things but I do my best. Hopefully the videos I'm making help some others in some way shape or form 👍
I had a 6.5l that must have been over-bumped... The throttle tip-in was horrendous, and using cruise control was not a good idea if it involved very low throttle input because the truck would buck hard as cruise added fuel just off off idle... EGT's were also pretty high under load... I didn't have a gauge but it pulled as well as an early dmax but would push a bit of smoke out the tailpipe if you weren't watching and run hot... When the head gasket went and I rebuilt it, several pistons had evidence of heat seizing in the cylinder.
Thanks man I appreciate it, don't get me wrong I like cummins as it is but I'm sure there are plenty of other channels out there that have a plethora of Cummins content hahaha
I'm glad I found you. I have a 95 6.5 1ton I've had 20 years. I'm having a crank but won't start issue. New pmd new fuel shut off silanoid fuel pump is pushing fuel to injector pump but not getting to the injectors. Any suggestions would be great.
Hey man I appreciate you taking the time to watch the videos, by chance when you installed the new PMD was there a resistor inside the plug? If so what size
@@JessePelkey1 it has the 9 resister same as the last 2 pmd. I've had the truck for a little over 20 years . I'm getting fuel to the injector pump but not to the Injectors
@@mikeperkins6362 I got that the first time you wrote it man, that doesn't mean the injection pump is bad but it also doesn't rule it out. I'd rather try to help ya out by finding the actual cause of your no start by asking questions, then just tell you it's the injection pump and it doesn't work. I don't want y'all to waste money on parts you don't necessarily need. 👍

Please help I have a 1996 chevy 3500 6.5l turbo that I just picked up I have no knowledge on diesels this is my first truck but i do know my way around the tool box . Truck seems to act like it wants to start , black , and some white smoke seems to be in the mix in between trying to start . I even tried jumping the glow plug solenoid it seems to want to run more when I do that , at times the starter starts to spin faster on its own and at times seem like it's gonna start but doesn't . Engine shakes as it fires but no start .. I can hear the lift pump working and the bleed screw on the top of the fuel filter does push fuel out when opened an key in the on position and smoke is coming out of the turbo like burning diesel smell so fuel has to be getting to the injector and burning some if also smoke it coming out the tail pipe and the smoke coming out the pipe is pretty decent clouds . But I just can't get the thing to start . As I said I just picked up the truck it was in pieces and I put it back together . Owner said he put a new injection pump as I can see someone has been in there because there was and old pdm still bolted to the intake on the engine which owner didn't bother remove and the current pdm installed on the truck in its factory location on the pump . I plan to relocate once I figure to get the truck started . Could the optical solenoid be out of time and so could moving it and advance it it help the engine start but ilde high ? I'm not totally ready to give up on my first diesel and certainly like the challenge to trying to figure it out . Please help I'm poor and don't have alot of money I can't really afford to take it to a shop
Can you please show, how to set the pump to number 1 cylinder? I have a truck with new pump and a fellow employee didn’t set the base timing prior to changing the injection pump. He’s since quit and dumped this project in my lap.
Great video keep up the good work! Im a new diesel owner watching your vid is a great help. Just bought a new PMD would like to know more about the resistors, like what is a stock resistor, does it come with pmd or is it something extra that I have to buy? Thanks looking forward too your next video.
Really wish you lived closer to me and or had a way to help me out with my 6.5 I want to get alitte more power outta her but no to much to where it hurts it as well as I'm having afew small issues I can't figure out with I think blow by I believe but no coolent in oil or oil in coolent or anything so idk what that is
No you need to get a hold of a new or used harness and do your research to figure out where your constant power, switched power and grounds are let me know if you can’t find a diagram I can probably figure out for you with a factory service manual
Well I'm back to being a 6-5 lover the deal on the Duramax donor truck is no deal just purchased a parts truck for $450. My 96 has 500 000km not sure what that is in miles I'm trying to get it started its bin sitting for few years it cranks over slow with some used batteries and two Duramax pickups boosting it I'm thinking the starter is dragging any thoughts ?
@@JessePelkey1 buddy said it drove under its owner power to its parking spot were it sat for years they parked it cause the transmission lost 4rth. I had it basically tuning by it self with that starter helping it and not I can't get it back to doing over that fast again.
Questions on turbos? Holset never made a hx35 with t3 flanges. All the cheap turbos to mid range all have different sizes under hx35. The exhaust housing the exhaust inlet and the turbo inlet and wheel housing along with wheel size all of this under the hx35 style. Hopefully you understand what im asking/getting to. Its stupid confusing.
I agree unless you got the money leave your optical sensor alone or you may regret it lol injection umps are expensive and a pain in the ass if you want a lot more power get a bigger turbo or get a tune like he says I’ve did it before and didn’t notice a big diff
Hi again. Regarding the optic bump. Can you factory re set after a bump has been done as I have the dead peddle also. As well as fish biting which has been my issue all along Any ideas for trying to get this repaired Thanks Bill
Best bet would be to manually reset the bump mod back to it's original location, that way it doesn't interfere or go haywire if you ever have to reset.
I got a question for you I just replaced my injection pump then my water pump went out so it's been a week but new water pump is on now while I had it off I checked the timing and it's dead on but my throttle feels slow I guess I can press the pedal all the way down and i get almost nothing
I guess my question would be how did you verify that the timing was dead nuts on. Did you use a scanner in order to read timing or did you just set it back to where it was?
@@JessePelkey1 I didn't realize I had to use a scanner I took the timing cover plate off when I did the water pump and the gears were in time but it just doesnt seem right to me
I'm just curious I have a 6.5l mechanical pump and I turned up the fuel and can loosen the pump and can rotate it to btdc and atdc and I noticed more smoke and more power and rotating the opposite noticed lagy power. is this the same for the electric pump can you do a resistor increasing fuel and advance time by rotating the pump instead of going inside the pump and running the risk of messing something up or getting dirt and stuff floating in the air in it??
How do I do a vacuum pump delete. I have a manual turbo actuator Can you advance optic sensor to much? Now keep in mind when doing this bump. It's going to create heat. You will create power. I advanced my optic eye to much, had major power, unfortunately, overheated and blew heads. Now I'm trying to get running after rebuilt heads. I went for a drive, truck stalled, would not start, smokes grey and black bad. Once started Kept stalling until I hydrolocked . Pulled all glow plugs, turned over, cleared, cylinders, put glow plugs in, started yet very rough. Trying to time injection pump now. I just can't seem to start it now. So I'm going to set optic eye to factory specs , set time at -079. I need to do a vacuum delete, since I have a manual turbo actuator. Here is what I have done: New aluminum 4 core. New heater core. Pmd kit w/9 resister. Fuel filter housing and hoses. Lift pump. Accelerator peddle. Water pump. Duel thermostats. Map sensor. Since putting the rebuilt heads on, it's not running, correctly. Something isn't right, I'm trying to figure it out. The only thing I have not replaced is the injection pump. Which I'm looking at this kit. ... 94-01 6.5L DS Performance Kit 40-50HP - Pensacola Fuel Injection pensacoladiesel.com/product/94-01-6-5l-ds-performance-kit-40-50hp/ I'm hoping I didn't damage the bottom end. I'll keep you all informed. I'm trying to get it running before I purchase the pump kit. Any advise is welcome. Or message me.
Typically I look at the description or the pump, look for flow rates, pressure tests, any amount of info they can provide, the more the better. Then I look at the reviews, and see if anyone has had any problems. Then I'd look at return policy, in the event you get a bad pump you don't want to be stuck with it. Look for common names that are talked about as far as remanufactured.
Hey Jesse , I been watching your videos for some time now and now I’m finally getting my 6.5 . It’s a 2door Tahoe about ten hours away . Seems pretty legit , 1 owner 177k miles and has most of the bulletproofing done to it due to the owner being a diesel mech. If anyone here could give me some info on how these engines do on extended drives ? As well if anyone knows the price range on these 2 door tahoes 6.5’s
Hey man, sorry it took so long to get back to you, been pretty busy. So long as everything is in sound condition they are a good long distance rig. I would trust mine to go anywhere. Price depends on condition, though the Tahoe with the 6.5l are more uncommon, if it's rusted out or has a bunch of leaks everywhere the price needs to be negotiated for sure. It will cost more out of pocket in the long run just getting the issues fixed. I've seen them go between 2k and 5k but that's just been my experience.
@@JessePelkey1 awesome to know thank you ! I FaceTimed the owners son and he showed me everything he could show me through a phone . 0 rust from what I could see ( California car) so negotiating with no leaks may be a challenge hahah . But we will see !

@@thomashardin7902 I would bet that's your issue right there. I just made a video on the vacuum pump if your interested. But if it's not smoking at idle, you get on the throttle and it's a bunch of black smoke, no power like it use to have, it's a very common issue along with the vacuum solenoid.

Dont want to get me going with optical sensors those maroons that built that pump i bought really botched that whole thing up then broke a t40 trying to tighten everything down and the top of the broken tool broke the data disc. What a nightmare. I did my own feed the beast upgrade thats about all i did to mine cause it starts to run out of fuel under load. Theres places building the db to flow as much as a duramnax 700 plus horsepower imagine if gm had never used these electronic pumps and just paid to modify the mechanical pump ! Its why theres a whole wright up on a conversion back to mechanical.
I completely agree brother, the DS4 definitely has its disadvantages as far as horse power and reliability and are incredibly easy to screw up if you fiddle with them. And the limitations that the DS4 pumps have compared to the DB2 are pretty substantial. When I build up the 929 project (spoiler alert) I do not plan on going back with a DS4 👍
please dont guess, but does anybody feel like u know the reason y this isnt set at full power from the factory? does it heighten the chances of somethin else happening?? i cant think of anything other than the obvious timing related things
Gm designed these motors to be able to run full throttle all day without issue like in heavy hummves or heavy towing up hill as long as you watch your egts and don’t beat one it when towing heavy it will last with more timing but you can blow head gaskets if you don’t watch how you drive when towing
I have 1994 gmc I have changed the fuel pump the fuel filter air filter and so far it has not changed the truck and what the truck is doing is I can start it up in the morning and it idles rough like it's missing then after it warms up I could drive down the road and the RPMs will go up down up down like like I don't know I can't stay at one Pacific speed like 50 mph stay at it jumps too much

Truck is looking great! Thanks for the info. From your description of how your truck operates I think the previous owner bumped the optical sensor on mine. I have the same issue going downhill
Weird isn't it? Seems like it more or less falls away from you while costing.
sir you have some good video's and i have learn alot on the 6.5 ..
As far as I know between the two there isn't too many difference, but then again I haven't worked on a whole lot of the step van platforms at all
@@JessePelkey1 maybe I should role by one day so you can look thru and see for future info if needed :)
Oh hey, I never congratulated you guys on the new house! Congrats! Hopefully it will serve you and momma well!
@@chrisgillespie7194 thank you Chris, I appreciate that. So far so good, few bumps in the road here and there but nothing that has broken the bank yet hahaha
better then the last one. Thanks for all the good videos.
Replace the injection pump if it has one! They last around 50k-100k miles
Good afternoon I am working on a 6.5 timing needing the Alignment dot for the timing chain
Awesome video! learned a lot ! Wish u had videos on common rail cummins .. I'd be ya best friend lol ! 😆

@@JessePelkey1 could it be the optic sensor? I've checked my grounds. It doesn't have the resister on the optic sensor wires. Wondering if maybe the new pmd is bad.
Also my glow plugs just come no for a second or to then go off . Maybe I need new glow plugs?
I would like to know more about the little harness on the optical censor

Can you please show, how to set the pump to number 1 cylinder? I have a truck with new pump and a fellow employee didn’t set the base timing prior to changing the injection pump. He’s since quit and dumped this project in my lap.
Absolutely, if you look at my tear down videos I actually show the timing very briefly 👍

Hey man, as far as removing the solenoid, are you referring to the pmd? (Little black box)
Great video keep up the good work! Im a new diesel owner watching your vid is a great help. Just bought a new PMD would like to know more about the resistors, like what is a stock resistor, does it come with pmd or is it something extra that I have to buy? Thanks looking forward too your next video.
Stock is a #5, and It will automatically default to 5 if there's no resistor.

I did the optical bump and a no.9 resistor also relocated the pmd, felt a little bit more power nothing crazy. 248K and still rolling.
Could be the starter, so long as there is nothing else wrong with the motor

Best bet would be to manually reset the bump mod back to it's original location, that way it doesn't interfere or go haywire if you ever have to reset.

Hey do you have a video of how replace that sensor
I'm just curious I have a 6.5l mechanical pump and I turned up the fuel and can loosen the pump and can rotate it to btdc and atdc and I noticed more smoke and more power and rotating the opposite noticed lagy power. is this the same for the electric pump can you do a resistor increasing fuel and advance time by rotating the pump instead of going inside the pump and running the risk of messing something up or getting dirt and stuff floating in the air in it??
The exact same man, your just advancing or retarding the timing. Just gotta be careful on how much you rotate
What was that little box you said to get rid of on the wire for the optical sensor harness?
The optical sensor filter harness. I actually made a video on the filter harness if you are interested in watching it.
did ds4 injection pump with optical sensor come exclusively in chevy/gmc diesel or did ford use it in their later 7.3 diesel?
7.3l IDI never used the DS4, only GM
How do I do a vacuum pump delete. I have a manual turbo actuator
Can you advance optic sensor to much?
Here is what I have done:
New aluminum 4 core.
Which I'm looking at this kit. ...
94-01 6.5L DS Performance Kit 40-50HP - Pensacola Fuel Injection

I'm hoping I didn't damage the bottom end. I'll keep you all informed. I'm trying to get it running before I purchase the pump kit. Any advise is welcome. Or message me.
How do you know if it is a quality injection pump?
Typically I look at the description or the pump, look for flow rates, pressure tests, any amount of info they can provide, the more the better. Then I look at the reviews, and see if anyone has had any problems. Then I'd look at return policy, in the event you get a bad pump you don't want to be stuck with it. Look for common names that are talked about as far as remanufactured.
Would rotating the IP housing do the same thing?
Hey Jesse ,
I been watching your videos for some time now and now I’m finally getting my 6.5 .
This one is pretty dam nice so yea kind of want to pull the trigger . Still bringing people to look at it with .
