  • Here I show you the steps to follow for setting the pump timing on a 94+ 6.5l diesel. This particular truck is a 1994, and I had already moved the pump to the correct position before recording the events on the scanner. Hopefully this video will help someone fighting timing their pump correctly.

This is a tech 2, sorry for the late reply, didn't get a notification

You answered all of the questions that I couldn't figure out with the Google and I was finally able to time the pump on my 94 6.5. Great video thanks for posting!

Hi thank you for the video, yesterday I was trying to time my pump (after replacement) at first the timing was high, like 15° and ran like crap. As I get closer to 3.5 the pump gets very hard to turn as if I was out of adjustment, is it normal that there is great resistance? Before I was able to clock it enough to 7° of timing with 0 resistance. I am scared that I might be out of adjustment before I can get to 3.5. right now I was able to get it to 5° and it runs like crap(worse than it did a 7°). I am very confused it's the first time I work on a 6.5. can you please help? Thank you!
If you prefer I would really appreciate it if we could chat over discord or e-mail or something like that

Are you turning time set on? Desired should go from 11 or 12 or whatever to 0, only when desired is 0 should you see around 3.5 degrees.
Generally speaking the pump should be straight up and down, slightly leaned toward the driver side.
You can have it too far to the passenger side and get 3.5 degrees, but it will set a positive TDC number.
Do you have any fault codes? Fault codes can lock the system and make it act odd.

@@jeremiahjackson2137 I have not taken into consideration TDC offset. I will go and see what it says. What I've done so far since I changed the injection pump is start it, let it get up to temperature. I then go into the scanner press time set on, reads that it's higher than 3.5 so I then stop the engine and rotate the pump to the passenger side try and get to 3.5. From what your saying I guess the procedure is to get the TDC between the acceeptable range then do a TDC learn or reset and then recheck the Inj timing?

@charlesmorissette8620 what scanner are you using?
It's possible you have it too far to the passenger side, once you get too far over there, then the engine tries to stall when running time set

I'm using a otofix d1 lite made by autel, I think your right I think it has to do with TDC offset, Ill try and look at it if it can stop raining 😅 gonna update you on that maybe tomorrow

@charlesmorissette8620 the TDC offset number is based on your time set number, so think of it as a way to double check your time set. I'm not familiar with your software, but I assume it's lying to you.
Try standing the pump straight up, barely leaned toward the driver side. Turn the key on, hold the throttle down for a minute, let off, shut the key off, wait a minute, then start and see if there's a TDC offset number. If it's 0 wait for it to warm up and set it's own number and see what it is.

1994 has OBD1 port. Is this the Tech 2 bidirectional scanner (from Hong Kong) with adapter?

This is a tech 2, the tech 2 can do obd1 or obd2 just depending on which adapter you use. I bought this from a California based seller on ebay, it comes with all the adapters. I was trained on a factory tech 2 unit and its very hard to tell the difference between an oe and a knock off
