    Who knew that old popup could turn into a usable hard side camper? So many ideas watching this. That back splash looks great. Glad you were able to reuse the stove and sink. The level was a smart addition. Happy to see you gel coated those outside walls and the decal turned out nice. Great job.

      Thank you! I love hearing from everyone. It’s really me, I love it more than a new one. Colors and decals are much different than what’s for sale. The gel coat I think is a game changer. Permanent paint job basically I am hoping for with out mildew sticking. Just wash it like a car or metal camper. Stay tuned I keep adding more details. If you haven’t already subscribed please do so. Thanks again :)

    My mom used to have a camper just like that. We went on a 10-day camping trip. On about day 8, it rained heavy one night, and because it was an older camper, the rain puddle in the canvas over my bed. The rotting thread gave way, and I ended up under a waterfall of cold water. Luckily, a friend had room for me to sleep in their house for the last couple of nights of the event we were at. So it was good to see that you couldn't save the canvas, I would never have a trailer with canvas pull outs after what happened to me. Just a suggestion, in the recess under your Murphy bed, build a fold down table, and/or a book rack, maybe both.

    • @Jeep-Creep
      @Jeep-Creep  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Oh no! That’s awful! I couldn’t imagine how cold that must have been. I’ve had many days tent camping in the rain storms, blizzards, with tent failures so I know how that must of felt. Having a hardside camper that is cozy is so nice for me. That is a great idea with the fold out table under the Murphy bed. I will work on a design. I also really like the bookshelf idea to keep some books I travel with in. Maybe above the Murphy bed what do you think? Anyways thank you for the story and please subscribe if you haven’t already. @Jeep-Creep The other thing that concerned me was when you put your clogs next to your heater box. Will it get too warm to possibly melt your clogs? You may want to put a smoke detector in there too.

      @@judyherman1249 The Chinese Diesel heater doesn’t get super hot on the plastic casing. It does project heat via fan over 100f but not much more than that. To be safer I would push them back in a little farther if I store them there. I do have a Carbon Dioxide/monoxide detector which I think covers smoke.

    what impressed me seriously with this build as opposed to all the others I have watched is that you didn’t have 79 million power tools a huge garage with every possible convenient accessory needed to build this little beauty.
    it is so rare to see a person do something like this on TH-cam. That doesn’t have every imaginable power tool available.
    just a simple guy (said with deep respect) making do with brains and adaptabilities.
    thank you so much for a video that shows the average person can do this with the average amount of household tools. 👍🏻

    • @Jeep-Creep
      @Jeep-Creep  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

      Thank you for that very correct observation. I am just one guy, minimal tools, minimal budget, minimal experience. If you stick at something anyone can do this. I am helping others get into camper conversions because I love this hobby so much now. It’s very wasteful what happens to older campers that all can have a second life and probably a longer second life. I actually had an RV shop that did my bearings say, these home built campers like your are actually better built and more durable than when it was new. Lots of them have leaking issues within a few years. Rodents get inside too because they are not sealed. All very true statements. I used to have a mouse problem until I improved the insulation. If you like this build I do other projects as well. I am also still adding to my camper. Thank you for the comment and if you haven’t already, please subscribe.

      I am glad I brought back some happy memories! I think some people grew up handy and others grew up something else... For example I have zero interest in sports and I am not good at any of them, which is typically a men thing. Also societal norms are changing a bit, I know a lot of women from my Wife's Jeep club, that are very into off-roading. Girls never did this when I grew up. Do I think the majority of men over women are more into tools and construction, yes... but it's not a definitive thing, its just the majority or norm. Also being a Craftsmen and knowing the things I do is a hobby I have had for 30 years or so, that I learned little by little. The trick is to just do it, do not fear failure or reticule. Honestly anyone can learn this stuff if they have a little fortitude and keep at it. Thank you again for your great comment and if you need help I can also give you great advice on how to do anything. I am helping a few of my other subscribers build one right now too. Great video. The first thing you noticed besides the sheer nastiness inside was how incredibly good condition the outer shell was relatively. No rust, 1 hole and no major scratches. To a man with your skills (and patience) you saw the possibilities. After seeing those ants and animals, there is no way I could have kept those bug infested, urine drenched wood sub panels! I know you sealed them perfectly, but they are THERE…underneath everything…

      So if you check out my episodic videos of this build which go into much more detail the floor was covered in carpet and linoleum, which I cleaned with an industrial cleaner/degreaser. It was a concern of mine until I took it on a few trips.. I have a bigger tow vehicle which I think helps, 2015 Tahoe. It pulls at 70mph all day long and barely uses much extra MPG as well. I have been in a cross wind as well, and it pulls straight and true like butter. I have towed a lot of big boats and trailers and this honestly tows with the best of them. New Tires helps I think, and I had the wheel bearings repacked, and axle ends cleaned. Please Subscribe if you haven't already.

      Honestly anyone can learn this. The one thing to keep in mind is, can't get much worse. I took my time and slowly worked on this for about a year, I used it too before finalizing it to see what I think camping comforts I might need... It's hard to plan for everything, so I left it customizable to my needs as I went. I am helping a couple of my Subscribers as well do their campers. I can give you all the help you want. I can even draw plans in 3d CAD to help visualize your goal. Maybe one day you will get another one for free.... I considered it... One of my primary goals was to get a full length, 10" thick, Memory foam mattress in my tiny camper. The mattress actually is wider than the lower walls and rests on top of the original slides, buying me around about 6" of needed length. My goal was to have a perfectly comfortable bed vs the folding mattresses other wise I totally would have done it that way. Plus I have actually slept 2 in my camper, one on the floor under me perpendicular to me since the floor layout is 6x6 I can accommodate this when my brother wants to sleep in the camper vs a tent, like in high heat or cold nights. I actually would like to do another popup, maybe 12' in length vs my 6' so I can do a micro wet bath, and a fixed bench seat with 2 beds. Thanks for the idea, Please Subscribe

    • @Jeep-Creep
      @Jeep-Creep  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don’t think it’s highly flammable. Something highly flammable would be like gasoline. The vapors are not strong at all. It’s also pressed between wood, foam board, aluminum, and rubber coating. So I am pretty sure it’s safe. Some people also worried about fumes. There never have been any. It’s sealed up nice. I think the wood ceiling and counter is more flammable. So I need to be careful what I should put on my counter top. Probably avoiding polyurethane and using a seed oil instead. No insulation on the walls.

    • @Jeep-Creep
      @Jeep-Creep  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is intentional and by design. Insulation costs a lot, takes up internal dimensions, and really is not needed. I use a Chinese diesel heater that makes it too hot inside even in sub zero temps. I have camped in the summer in 100f plus weather and a good cross breeze and fan works wonders, also the AC is nice at night. The camper is near as air tight as possible with a small vent to allow pressure balance between inside and out. I personally believe insulation is a bit unnecessary. I’ve tent camped in a blizzard in -30f tent with just a sleeping bag. This thing is 100 times more insulated than a tent and is plenty toasty not even heating it on cold nights. Also part of having a small camper is to spend more time outside not in. Please Subscribe, let me know what you think.

    I have a Rockwood popup that was taken over by ants and termites (& didn't know). Had it all open...was using it to watch football and hang out with my buddies. We had a freak snow storm while I was at work and my kid happened to drive by and saw that the upright supports had gone thru the roof 😮😮.
    None of the camper repair places wanted to work on it, and one of the managers I know told me that there's very little expectation for the longevity of a pop-up, and recommended I turn it into a utility trailer 😂. It's been sitting in the yard, covered with a tarp bcs I didn't even know where to begin; - like someone else said, almost all of the TH-cam videos about rehab'ing popups the guys have huge garages and every power tool imaginable, and unlimited resources, professional skills and knowledge. I started building this in the fall and worked on it straight through winter in subzero temps. No shelter, no garage to work in, no heat, nada. You can see how bundled up I was for a lot of the video. I have watched other TH-camrs with big garages and insane budgets do less than I have. So I’m pretty proud of that. It was a labor of love and determination. Now I am hooked and want to try something else. I am still working on this camper too. My goal is to get all amenities in a mini camper. It's what I was missing for sure. All my videos are a little too detailed and not as fun to watch. This one flows nicely. I hope I blow up like all these other camper builders. I haven't got as many views as them. I follow BlackSpruce and he has 1million views on his build, I would be happy with a 1/10th of that lol. The stringing of videos is because this has been a 2 year project, some people will film each video and wait until done and make 1 awesome video instead of installments, while that is awesome for getting a million views its hard because it means a TON of work and remembering what you did when and a very organized format. When we film videos for TH-cams even though they seem like they run long at times, they are edited a ton. I usually film like 20 hours and it compresses usually to 20min. So its an art for sure, there is easily often more time spent filming and editing than the actual work, which really adds a ton of time invested.

Honestly it’s very rewarding to get this kind of feedback from my viewers. I do really enjoy this kind of work and I hope to inspire and give others vision of a fun project like this, that can be done by anyone on a minimal budget. I have been also complemented by an RV Trailer Repair shop for my build quality when I had them double check the suspension and repack and inspect axle. So that meant a lot too. He states that even new trailers leak because they are so thin and cheap on materials and only goal is to build as fast as possible and cheap as possible. He says more and more 2 year old trailers leak and then have major rotting issues. I kept this in mind when I built and understand how seams fail over time. I used all stainless steel, aluminum, rubber coat, and gel coat (for boat hulls) when building so this camper lasts as long as possible. Stay tuned I do have more work to do on it. Stays straight even in a 50mph cross wind. I use a 2015 Tahoe 5.3l to tow and it pulls with ease. Trailer only weights 1660lbs. Please Subscribe I got a bunch of camper updates.

    • @Jeep-Creep
      @Jeep-Creep  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@davidwalesby2426 yes for sure. Since room is tight I would have loved having a hard slide out. Only issue for one is weight, I’m at 1660lbs now axle rated for 2000lbs. Second issue, structural integrity, the slides use plastic wheels on a aluminum frame. They also need to be supported from the bottom. Third, room inside, slides have to go somewhere when in travel. So your inside has to fold up to make room. Another plan is to have permanent slide out bunks. But again it’s not a strong design. If you want bunks on the ends you should just stick to a longer trailer and the box design. I have considered building a bigger trailer. Mi e is 6x6 I was thinking doing a 6x12 just for beds and bathroom. Anyways if you haven’t please subscribe

      Thank you for the sub! Michigan is a beautiful state it's hard to find an area that isn't nice. That being said I would highly recommend any campground on the water. Middle of Michigan and higher is beautiful. All of the Great Lakes campgrounds are pretty nice. I think Michigan's upper west side is probably the most beauty geo-graphically, you get more rolling hills. I just stayed at the North Higgins lake campground this summer and I like that lake a TON. It is crystal clear water, with a huge sandy shelf that goes out into the lake probably 200-300 yards. It's a fantastic water sports lake. We have 1000s of rivers as well, its hard to pick a bad one. I do highly recommend the Au Sable River. It dumps into small lakes along the way. It has high cliffs in parts that you swear you were in a mountainous state. It stretches all the way across Michigan and dumps into Lake Huron. Along the river you can disperse camp, I think in a lot of spots for free as well. On the upper west side I highly recommend Interlochen campground, and put in on Platte Lake, follow the Platte River all the way into Lake Michigan. It is a sandy lake/river trip, warm water, until Lake Huron, and when it exits into Lake Huron, you will be on the Largest Sand Dunes I think in any fresh water lake. On the Sleeping Bear Dunes, you swear you were in the middle of the desert the sand dunes are so high and massive. It is one of the most popular off road parks in the United States, people come from all over to visit them. I highly recommend visiting the Sleeping Bears Dunes Park as well, lots of family activities and they rent a pretty wide assortment of off road vehicles. The ONLY thing I cannot stress enough, BOOK NOW for the summer, it fills up FAST! Checking the DNR Website for campground rentals it works quite well. midnrreservations.com Let me know how your travels go. I am always interested in swapping stories. I have never been to Nebraska, any recommendations? I am hoping to see more of the US with my newly built camper. Also stay tuned, I think I have done a couple updates to my camper since that video... I got my water system figured out for example.

    how well does this tow? I have a feeling you will have issues with it wanting to sway very badly and be unstable because these popup trailer frames, axles and tires are not meant to handle that high center of gravity when towing they are meant to be low center of gravity . also you have added an extremely large amount of weight compared to what this was designed for by having the hard sides. this looks unsafe to me.

      Tows as smooth as butter. New tires, repacked bearings. Axle is 1.75” diameter which is rated to 2,200lbs. Weighed trailer fully loaded with gear on a CAT scale at 1,660lbs. I have towed this in storms with 60mph crosswinds @ 70mph and no sway. I usually tow at 65mph in my Tahoe to achieve 14mpg. Longest tow was about 3 hours so far and I’ve towed it maybe 7 times now no issues. Lots of people concerned with drag. With a Tahoe which is tall not much drag. I used a 3” drop down hitch and I keep it level towing. I’ve had zero issues.

      Yeah, lots of campers wind up in this very similar situation. It's good to let things go if you are not going to use them. Sell them while they still have value. It's hard to let stuff go, I know I am one of them sometimes. Hopefully it's repairable, often these need more work than its worth to pay someone to fix it up, and people often give them away for next to nothing, or even free, like how I got mine. I hope you decide to fix it up, and if so keep me posted. I will be adding more updates to mine and I do camping videos too, so Please Subscribe and follow me on my adventures 😃

      @Jeep-Creep  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much! What is your definition of creep? Just wondering. Yeah I know it’s usually a creepy male that might wig out females but it’s not the definition I care about. I use it bc I like Halloween for one, a creeper or spooky guy. Notice my logo is a Jeep grill inside a tombstone. My old opening used to include horror movie quotes. Two double meaning: a “creeper” gear on a Jeep or 4x4 is a low range gear for off-roading. Third Webster main definition is to move slowly. Which I do and is kind of a joke. I know for better marketing to a broader audience using politically correct vernacular a potential derogatory double entendre like “creep” is not wise. I love the idea. But there is no isolation, no toilett and where do you sleep? It seema to be too smal. It was realeaseable once, that gave doubled space. Now its so small.
    And I have the strong feeling it is not rainproof. I guess it will fall apart soon. Saw a straight rift in the frame down there lower right backside.
    But you propably learned a lot through this project and will come up with another cool idea soon. Thanks for sharing

    • @Jeep-Creep
      @Jeep-Creep  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Insolation is not needed, I have 27,000 BTUs to 36sqft, or 750BTUs per sqft, if you have a small house say 1500sqft with a standard furnace 100,000 BTUs thats only 66BTUs per sqft. I have enough heat to generate a sauna in -20f and I have! Insulation is costly and eats up space. I have 3/4" plywood walls, most home barely have that with insulation. Toilet I have not shown is a porti potti... It's a small camper.. most small campers do not have toilets or bathrooms... Look up Tear Drop trailers. It is extremely tight, but that is the point, I am Solo camping, I do not need a queen mattress... I have a twin / 10" memory foam mattress with 2 bench seats and I am installing a Table soon. I have more head space than a Tear Drop, I have about 6'5" of space, more than enough for my 5'11" body. Why did I remove the doubled space of the Tents? Because 1. Tent trailers are not good in cold weather. 2. they are a pain to setup, this trailer I back in and I'm done, I don't even unhitch if its level. 3. To replace a tent on a 6x6 trailer costs about $1,400 if I did it myself... I have under $400 in this and its warmer, and cooler (I have an AC). 4. It tows awesome! The added weight makes it tow straighter believe it or not, high wind does not bother it.
      It is extremely rain proof, I have had it in torrential down pours, and a hurricane already. No leaks, more importantly no damage. In the winter I have been buried in a snow drift I had to dig out of. 1' of snow on roof. It's never come close to a failure or even being slightly cold. In the summer I have been to a campground and we had a spike in heat of 110f during the day and 95f at night, running the AC I was cold and slept under a comforter. The base where you saw a split, I don't think I captured it in that video, I spray foamed insulated the entire base of the camper. Originally there was just 1/2" loose pieces of Styrofoam in there from Coleman manufacturing. I am no at all denying that its small, its tiny, but by design. Like I said though the floor is only a 6x6... I might do a bigger one if I can find another Free Camper, and I would like a 6x12 doubling the size. I have drawn some designs already in CAD with a wet bathroom, a queen bed, and a twin bunk. I might do that soon. Or optionally I like to 4wheel offroad, I might build a toyhauler so I can camp and offroad. I learned a ton, and some of it honestly, I overbuilt, some things I want to do different too, mostly for weight reduction. I have a 1660lbs loaded camper riding on a 2,000lbs rated axle. I would like to get a 3,500lbs axle on a 6x12 base, and work from that. A lot of people don't like the box look, no aerodynamics. Like I said earlier it tows AMAZING, straight line, even in high cross winds... I tow at 65mph and I only loose maybe 4 MPG in my Chevy Tahoe 5.3l v8 using the cruise control, however, small elevation changes in Michigan.
      I am all ears and love this kind of feedback because its a check list for me for the next one. Anyways stay tuned Subscribe and Follow, I have more editions coming to this camper, things like toilet and shower are coming soon when it warms up. Also check out this tour video of the inside so you can see it better.

    The Wabasto heater will run you out of a camper that size even on the coldest night, as long as you have some insulation. I've used them in my truck for the last 15 years, you wouldn't think something that small could put out that much heat. I set mine on 70 degrees and it does a good job keeping an even temp.

    • @Jeep-Creep
      @Jeep-Creep  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is some great news to hear! I have only used mine while building my camper in the winter. I am planning on doing some cold weather camping trips. The only thing I need to do is find a way to quiet down the fuel pump. I haven't made a video yet on my attempts as I have not successfully found a solution. I so far put it in a 6x6 electrical watertight box, and filled it with expanding foam and then mounted it to the underside of my camper. I had no idea that it would actually I think make it louder like a drum. So I am probably going to relocate it to the front of the trailer tongue. I know some people use Rock Wool to deaden the noise, but that stuff is super expensive and only comes in large quantities. I have searched on FB Marketplace with no luck so far. I am guessing on a low setting the ticking will slow down but its still loud, more so with the fan low. Have you addressed the sound? If so what worked for you? Anyways stay subscribed if you haven't already subbed... Thank you Happy Holidays!

    Im interested to know if this plywood warps at all with moisture? Big panels and moisture normally dont mix? The end result looks amazing however.

    • @Jeep-Creep
      @Jeep-Creep  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So firstly. Don’t use partial board. That being said. Also don’t use pressure treated plywood. Yes it’s more waterproof. However it off gasses the chemicals in the wood and will kill you or make you sick.
      Plywood if used correctly shouldn’t warp or at least noticeably warp. It needs to be treated with some sort of topcoat. On the outside of mine is boat gel coat. Which boats have, that’s a thick acrylic that’s waterproof indefinitely. On the inside that stays pretty much dry with no humidity anyway is painted with Killz which is an outdoor anti molding paint. Wood is funny and its small edge will work like a straw and pull up water like a straw through the siphon effect. Again it’s treated there as well. Plus I have overlap to prevent moisture. So not saying it will last forever but it will probably outlive me though. I have seen people just throw wood up and call it a day. Yeah that will rot, and within a year gray. It will become brittle and start to delaminate and decompose. So while a ton of people use foam board, and fiberglass coatings. I don’t honestly believe it lasts much longer. It does make it perfectly smooth on the shell and can be polished to a high shine. Which I didn’t really care about. Cost and durability was my main factors. I spent hundreds. I know people that spent over $1,000 just on the outer layer. So I am happy the route I took. If I do another one. I might try to do that more expensive harder route but only to learn it. Not because I believe it’s any more durable than mine. Please Subscribe and Follow to see some of my new updates.

      Thank you! Yeah I used all sorts of materials to keep the costs down while building a super durable air tight build. I am so super happy with the way it came out, the only thing is now is I wish I went a little bigger, so I can do a bathroom and a shower. I could just do a outdoor shower setup though. I do like that it is super light weight about 1600lbs and it tows so easily. Saves me a ton on MPG I barely notice an increase in fuel usage at 65mph. I get attention in campgrounds, people always love to come check it out. It was so much fun to build.
