  • I Was spearfishing with a buddy of mine when a wave pushed a Portuguese Man O’ War right over my head. I didn’t even see it, but immediately felt the tentacles on my neck and it sent me into a world of pain. Soon as I lifted my head out of the water I felt it push up against my lips and cheeks and the tentacles latched on to my mask and neck. Luckily my boy managed to grab it off of my face (you can still see it floating in the background) and i was still able to swim to shore where paramedics soon met me and sprayed me down with vinegar. Never dive alone!

I got really badly stung by one when I was a little kid. Wrapped around one of my ankles and sprawled over most of my torso. I legitly thought I was gonna die. Right before I graduated from Texas A&M with my MS in Geophysics I went to Australia with my neighbor who was working on his Doctorate in Zoological Toxinolgy. We were at a Beach that had sting nets to keep jellyfish out. When I see people in panic mode bringing a young woman on shore. She had almost drowned after being stung by a very small Box Jellyfish that had managed to get through the nets. Not from the physiological effects of the venom mind you, but from passing out fr the actual pain induced by the small Box Jelly. We spoke with a Man that had been bitten by an adult Coastal Taipan 3rd most venomous snake on Earth. (Of course at that level of toxicity it’s really kind of pointless to compare 1-3 as that’s like asking which would you rather be shot in the head with? A 50BMG or a 44 magnum?) It just doesn’t matter at that point. But the man still survived. But the woman stung by a Jellyfish no bigger than a golfball is the one that almost died. Quite remarkable really, as had it not been for the copious amount of lifeguard and EMS working those beaches she wouldn’t have survived that incident.

In this video though its just a manowar which most beach going aussies get stung multiple times a year and you almost never hear of serious illness or deaths. Box jellies and irakunjis on the other hand as you say are extremely dangerous and the more surface area of your skin touches it the more likely you are to die. You can touch the ones (box jellies) that wash up with the tip of your finger and the pain will last for 5 minutes but if you wrapped it around your arm youd likely die and have extreme pain.
