    I’m a 30 yr old man and a naturally very strong swimmer, and I take my hat off to this lady completely. My fear of sharks (probably irrational) is such that I can barely swim a few metres outside the buoys even in the Mediterranean Sea without imagining a huge set of jaws flying at me from out of nowhere! 😂 Absolutely paralysing, never in a million years would I have the bottle to do this.

      Same or in my lake. There is catfish and bass and other creature fish. There was a slimy big scary black fish with teeth and I saw it graze past my foot. I'm so scared now, especially cause I don't know what that was.

    Great video. It was amazing how much they were able to spot the shark in the drone footage. I suppose people have pointed out that she is now more famous because of this video, than if she had successfully made the swim without a shark. Well done, and after this, I would totally take the safe option!

    It's incredible to me that when I hear stories of distance swimming feats it's not usually a genetic super freak, but usually an unassuming woman, 40's or older, even into their 70's, and they just smash it like a boss. Incredible feat of endurance. Much respect.

    Wow. First of all huge congrats. This is an amazing feet. It just feels good for once to see a team who know exactly what they are doing with spotters, protocols etc. Also putting her life first and making sure she could jump into the kayak if things got worse. It is just too often we see professionals not really as well prepared as they should be. And then people blaming sharks... Congrats to the team, awesome job!

    Was a lifeguard from age 16-26 off and on until I got into IT. I remember going to the Coast Guard and Navy recruiter with hopes of becoming a rescue swimmer (of course "The Guardian) shaped those prospects. No matter how strong of a swimmer you are, the Ocean IS a different beast! The fear of the unknown 😫😫
    Shark attacks are so prevalent...I can't even enter the beach without thinking of them. When I go jet skiing and everyone jump into the water mid tour...NOPE. Not me! Big ups to this brave woman. I wish her nothing nothing but longevity. Hope she stays safe

      Thank you service as a lifeguard and for your comment. Shark attacks ARE prevalent. People have to remember that the data on shark attacks are REPORTED attacks and the majority of that data is collected from the U.S. and Australia. This video proves that sharks actively hunt and stalk humans. There is a CLEAR pattern of them singling people out who are alone and/or in small groups. The same predatory way they do to their usual sea prey.

    I saw Jaws in the theater when it released in theaters in 1975. I was 5 years old. My older brother snuck us in. We lived on a lake in Michigan at the time and after watching that movie, I would barely go in above my ankles for about a year 😂

    Ok, I can’t swim 15-20 SECONDS in the ocean. I swam 50 meters in a pool I couldn’t reach the floor in, and I thought I was gonna drown. I respect anyone that can do this. ✊

    This is a very tough swim. Eddie Akau lost his life (presumably) trying to swim for help on a surfboard on the first journey of the Hokule'a. George Helm was lost at sea with a companion coming back from Kahoolawe. One of my friends lost a swimmer friend who was attacked by a tiger shark out there. It ain't disneyland. Good thing she had such great backup. Congrats to Ranie for what she did do.

    Superb athlete. I cannot imagine the channel swimmers who venture into the water at night. These are the insanely committed swimmers. It is amazing to they never get attacked (except for the cookie cutter bites). I would be telegraphing fear to the lateral lines and ampullae of Lorenzini the entire swim with a rapid heartbeat and other stress indicators!! Kudos to all of these men and women!

    I'm a Lifeguard. What's even more disturbing is that the swimmer Pearce, never even bothered to get out of the water. When the shark was first spotted.
    And that kayaker would have had zero chance in saving her. [ that was a big shark ] I'm just glad that I don't have people like this protecting me, indeed.
    Do not ever - ever go head to head with a big shark. [EVER] again!

    I give this lady credit. She seems to be a senior and doesn't look in great shape. But boy she has amazing strength, courage and endurance to tackle this feat. I know someone that swam this. But she was in tip top shape, was young and trained for many years to tackle this. So thumbs up for Ranie for trying such a heroic feat.

      She's crazy. I've been in the waters of Hawaii. They are really warm and feel great while swimming but there are a lot of bull sharks and they are not allowed to kill sharks. Sharks are sacred to Hawaii.

      those sharks can also charge from the bottom and tip the boats over and then they eat you. There was a recent incident where a shark jumped into the boat and grabbed the person into the water. I wish they'd stop using those small boats.

      ET -yeah it is kinda creepy swimming in the deep blue open ocean but I love it the most! You feel so small and insignificant when all you can see are the suns rays, deep blue and the bottom is thousands of feet below. The water out there is so clear and looks super clean.

    Took too long to leave the water. Why on earth would I be waiting for the shark to leave? They're very curious creatures and the ocean is it's home. It was probably swimming for hours or days without seeing anything. Its unlikely its just gonna leave. I'd be scared shitless of another one or two sharks close by that have yet to be seen.

      I was wondering the same thing... Why did it take so long for her to decide to go on that boat? How far away was the boat any way? It seemed like it took a bit of them for the boat to come to them... But in any case, I would have jumped right into the boat at the first chance possible.. ESPECIALLY if it was a tiger shark... Im definitely not going to just wait to see if he'll go away. They should be thanking every deity out there that nothing happened.

    I've seen shark attack footage and that shark displayed the same behavior.
    Basically sizing up the prey and preparing an angle. There is footage somewhere here on YT of the attack. The diver lost their entire calf muscle.
    What pissed me off is there were other divers all around just casually watching this shark puffing up , circling .

      Same like the guy spearfishing in south africa with a go-pro and encountering a great white who curiously swam up to him. Dude screamed and panicked. Poor inexperienced young shark was just asking the human where is the best place to hunt seals, and human screamed in its face like that. How RUDE! XD 😂😂😂😂

      Surprising how well he was able to track the shark from the boat. And let's be honest, being in the water with a shark around is much scarier, but I wouldn't want to be near one in a tiny kayak either.

      Indeed. Sharks are dangerous creatures when provoked. Fascinating, respectable and spawned one of the greatest television events in the first week of August. Shark week 2018 I missed because of prepping for school. I was so disappointed. I got a shark week box it was glorious. I love shark week...I love sharks...my nickname was sharkbait in middle school...Respect the shark. Protect the shark. Watch Shark Week and marvel at the beautiful species of sharks.

    This, this lady is sooooo brave & a great swimmer. I’m terrified of the ocean and I don’t even go far in. And then seeing the shark, oh no. My soul would’ve left my body. Soooo much respect for this lady and the crew that was with her!

      If a GW saw her on the surface, all the back up in the world, wouldn't stop her being bitten in half and consumed, if it came straight up, like they do when they breach and hit a seal. If they see a fin in the water, they can get to her, and get her on the boat, if it hits from below, they can't help at all.

      @@lutherblissett7873 well statistically great white sharks aren't a huge danger to humans. And molokai is a well known (albeit difficult) marathon swim that many attempt and complete with the right training
