I'm a Lifeguard. What's even more disturbing is that the swimmer Pearce, never even bothered to get out of the water. When the shark was first spotted. And that kayaker would have had zero chance in saving her. [ that was a big shark ] I'm just glad that I don't have people like this protecting me, indeed. Do not ever - ever go head to head with a big shark. [EVER] again!
Without noticing.. being in open ocean for 20hrs, she probably passed a dozen sharks... At her age and size, that's an impressive swim! Respect! I'm half her age and wouldn't last an hour out there.
No I don't think she passed any sharks like great whites and bull sharks other wise she would have been dead , she was lucky in this video that she had someone out there with her to save her from that shark.
Only serious attacks in the Hawaiian islands have been from tiger sharks. No bulls here, and when whites pass through between Japan and the west coast they seem uninterested in biting humans.
Yeah idk if anyone else is ridiculous enough to do this, but sometimes I'm just laying there in the bath and I imagine at water at my feed to be a lot deeper than it really is, and imagine that some creature has somehow managed to appear in there. And I panic. Lol.
Was a lifeguard from age 16-26 off and on until I got into IT. I remember going to the Coast Guard and Navy recruiter with hopes of becoming a rescue swimmer (of course "The Guardian) shaped those prospects. No matter how strong of a swimmer you are, the Ocean IS a different beast! The fear of the unknown 😫😫 Shark attacks are so prevalent...I can't even enter the beach without thinking of them. When I go jet skiing and everyone jump into the water mid tour...NOPE. Not me! Big ups to this brave woman. I wish her nothing nothing but longevity. Hope she stays safe
Thank you service as a lifeguard and for your comment. Shark attacks ARE prevalent. People have to remember that the data on shark attacks are REPORTED attacks and the majority of that data is collected from the U.S. and Australia. This video proves that sharks actively hunt and stalk humans. There is a CLEAR pattern of them singling people out who are alone and/or in small groups. The same predatory way they do to their usual sea prey.
This woman has balls of steel. I mean can you imagine? With her head down she is literally staring into miles of blue water beneath her and in every direction. A vast open ocean where at any second a shark could swim up from the bottom to try and breach and you couldnt get away fast enough?!?!?!?! I cant even imagine jumping off a boat for one second into the ocean! even snorkeling and scuba diving sounds so scary to me and here she is swimming like its a walk in the park on a Saturday afternoon! man oh man.

Sonya Scott tapping the shark with the ore would most likely scare the shark off. They don’t want to work harder for their food if they don’t need to. The moment something starts to put up a fight it is no longer worth it for it then to engage. And forget it if they’re curious about something they’ll just leave it alone if it starts stabbing them lol.

ET -yeah it is kinda creepy swimming in the deep blue open ocean but I love it the most! You feel so small and insignificant when all you can see are the suns rays, deep blue and the bottom is thousands of feet below. The water out there is so clear and looks super clean.

Shark week 2018 I missed because of prepping for school. I was so disappointed. I got a shark week box it was glorious. She's crazy. I've been in the waters of Hawaii. They are really warm and feel great while swimming but there are a lot of bull sharks and they are not allowed to kill sharks. Sharks are sacred to Hawaii.
those sharks can also charge from the bottom and tip the boats over and then they eat you. There was a recent incident where a shark jumped into the boat and grabbed the person into the water. I wish they'd stop using those small boats.
@@an-cx1ho She’s obviously in great shape if she can swim something like that so maybe get some help to clear the misogyny in your tiny brain and realize women don’t exist to be attractive to men
If a GW saw her on the surface, all the back up in the world, wouldn't stop her being bitten in half and consumed, if it came straight up, like they do when they breach and hit a seal. If they see a fin in the water, they can get to her, and get her on the boat, if it hits from below, they can't help at all.

She is a Real Woman. They purposely eat a lot of calories beforehand, she would need to burn it for fuel. I met a guy that swam the English Channel and he ate lots of Chocolate ice cream to pack on fuel for the swim. They lose a lot of weight during the swim sometimes as much as 10kg
Also fat is buoyant so will help with streamlining and floatation. It's why women are better long distance swimmers than men. More far deposits round the hips means they don't drag their body though the water as inefficiency as men
@@chrisguygeezer I know i was thinking the same thing lol. This brave soul is not an average woman as Silvia put it. Maybe in Hawaii i guess if you are just counting locals.
Those talking bad about her weight and body shape need shut up. Because they obviously don't know what they are talking about when it comes to long distance swimming. She's actually in really great shape. She's just prepared for the large amount of calories (about 14,000 cal or more), carbs and fat she's about to burn. This isn't just like running 25-30 miles or swimming in a pool. When you include the current, waves, and temperature, she is burning more calories than most of you ever will in one day. She needs to stock up on carbs and body fat while training so she can complete the long distance swim. Otherwise a slender person would've passed out from exhaustion and a muscular person would've struggled to stay a float. Shes definitely gonna drop some serious weight by the end of her swim. This is all about endurance and technique.
No, she will not drop that much weight. Her weight (fat) gives her updrift, at the cost of more restistance in the water. She is heavier than she needs to be, which makes it more admireable. Trying to claim she will lose 40 lbs of fat in a day is not admireable.
I would feel uncomfortable in a kayak in open water like that let alone free swimming. Walking into the water from the beach and just keep swimming out deeper and deeper makes me feel sick! One brave lady mentally
Wow. First of all huge congrats. This is an amazing feet. It just feels good for once to see a team who know exactly what they are doing with spotters, protocols etc. Also putting her life first and making sure she could jump into the kayak if things got worse. Poor inexperienced young shark was just asking the human where is the best place to hunt seals, and human screamed in its face like that. How RUDE! XD 😂😂😂😂
Or the one where the guy was deep sea fishing on a kayak and a hammerhead got a little curious and was swimming around him, and the guy just *paddled* him over and over.
And what’s with cage diving? Those sharks are just trying to help the trapped human break out of prison. They know we can’t breathe underwater and just want to help so we don’t drown! And people freak out. So rude!😂
Absolutely phenomenal endurance, strength and stamina to take on such a long open water swim. Shame about the shark but I was so relieved when she got out.

What is she trying to prove? Why she swimming in ocean when she knows there is a shark out there? She"s lucky because when shark deside to attact he will eat the kayak first and then the stupid women too!
Use your brain before you type please... What would you have done just nothing? The kayaker further deterred the shark from getting closer.. Its pretty fucking simple.

Took too long to leave the water. Why on earth would I be waiting for the shark to leave? They're very curious creatures and the ocean is it's home. It was probably swimming for hours or days without seeing anything. Its unlikely its just gonna leave. I'd be scared shitless of another one or two sharks close by that have yet to be seen.
white people for you
I am sure this shark came across many sea creatures including fish in the hours or days it was swimming around.
I was wondering the same thing... Why did it take so long for her to decide to go on that boat? How far away was the boat any way? It seemed like it took a bit of them for the boat to come to them... But in any case, I would have jumped right into the boat at the first chance possible.. ESPECIALLY if it was a tiger shark... Im definitely not going to just wait to see if he'll go away. They should be thanking every deity out there that nothing happened.
Josie Farnam I was wondering why she didn't push dude out the kayak and let him take his chance with the shark...oh well

Great video. It was amazing how much they were able to spot the shark in the drone footage. I suppose people have pointed out that she is now more famous because of this video, than if she had successfully made the swim without a shark. Well done, and after this, I would totally take the safe option!

If you set out to swim 28 miles in the Pacific ocean, you've got to expect it. But having said that, what a brave & adventurous woman. Full respect & hats off to YOU.
I mean, I don't want to offend anyone, but is it brave or more just stupid to do such long swims in open ocean waters? Couldn't also be the case that there are one or even more white sharks coming and just make a fast attacks or bites instead of observing for minutes, giving the swimmer time to react? I don't know man, but you could never get me into that water.
yea people like you are straight idiots for thinking this is some kind of brave deed. Unless it's a beach with minimal riptide, people should NEVER swim in the ocean EVER..

I remember going to the Coast Guard and Navy recruiter with hopes of becoming a rescue swimmer (of course "The Guardian) shaped those prospects. No matter how strong of a swimmer you are, the Ocean IS a different beast! The fear of the unknown 😫😫
Shark attacks are so prevalent...I can't even enter the beach without thinking of them.
Wtf?? How did a shark get into the ocean????? That's crazy
Someone probably released a pet shark into the sewers.

Why would you say that? Who asked that question?
And so deep into the ocean...

Best comment ❤
Your talking utter bollocks
she's right body shape is muscle!
No, she will not drop that much weight. Her weight (fat) gives her updrift, at the cost of more restistance in the water. She is heavier than she needs to be, which makes it more admireable. Trying to claim she will lose 40 lbs of fat in a day is not admireable.
