Yes, last year I made Lebkuchen. Melted the butter, dark brown sugar and honey, added the cocoa powder and only ginger and cinnamon. When it cooled down, added egg. Then flour, baking powder and baking soda mixed in a little bit of vinegar. It made a really hard and sticky dough, but the cookies were so delicious! It was worth it!
I have never tried to make Lebkuchen. My grandmother has a family recipe and that she made every year when she was alive. I don't think anyone else in the family has made them. I have the recipe and have been wanting to try to make them but have never done it. I remember they were so good when she made them when I was a young child.
Thanks so much for posting this. My mother-in-law, who was German-American, made this every Christmas. At Thanksgiving last week we were remaniscing about her Lebkuchan.
Hi Anja I just started making your German bread but not having American cups I converted flour and milk to mils and grams. Flour came to 408grams and milk 480. I am seeing a very liquid dough not one we have for bread but rather cake batter. Is this how it should appear? Sorry if you mentioned it and I missed it x
I'm an army brat that was born in Germany. My mom has made this for me but she says hers is not as good as in Germany. Thank you for sharing, I'm planning on making this now for her. I hope it reminds her of Germany. I love it ❤️

@@OurGabledHomeThank you for your reply! I actually added 1 egg to your reciep and used Hazel nuts instead of flour. After all your recipe even soft it was very good and my husband like it a lot. I will bake it again. Lots of honey without sugar is very good.
@@OurGabledHome just found out you’re German. Me too! My mom used to make Lebkuchen, but unfortunately I don’t have her recipe so I was glad you posted one. I like the way you take your videos … reminds me of a German kitchen …haha …you’re more natural than most of this cooking ladies. 😁
There are certain foods I wouldn't make because it was more special if my great-grandmother, grandmother, or mom made them. Well, I'm the last one standing, so it's up to me to keep the holiday menu influenced by my Prussian heritage. These and springerle were special to me. I even got the family heirloom springerle board.
I will definitely have to try this recipe. Can you possibly do a video on how to make pfeffernusse cookies? We used to be able to purchase them but I would love to know how to make them from scratch. Thanks
Hi Anja....thank you for posting this! I'll be trying it out for sure. I don't care much for the (to me) weird tasting N.A. recipes for gingerbread which use so much molasses. I was astonished to see that one of your ingredients is cocoa powder!
Hi Heather! I am so glad you like this recipe! Yes, it does have honey but no molasses and cacao powder for color and depth of taste. Happy baking 💛 ~ Anja
Hi Anja, baked it in a square pie form and it all went up in the middle and took 40 minutes more to bake. I will try again with the size glass down you have been using. Any way thanks for the recipe
Hi Anke, yes, if you bake it in a smaller dish, it will take longer. I am glad you like this recipe, though, and thank you so much for commenting 💛 ~ Anja

Hi Anja, thank you for the lovely recipe. I am a huge fan of Lebkuchen and am trying this right now. I've noticed a small discrepancy though. In the video you add 2 cups of flour but in the recipe on your website it calls for 3 cups of flour. I'm going to guess that the written recipe is correct and add 3 cups. Wish me luck.
Hi Joanne, yes, you are right about the discrepancy ... 3 cups is the correct amount! I did add a title to the video where I am adding the flour. Hope you liked your lebkuchen 💛 ~ Anja
Hello, thank you. I made it today however, instead of flour I used almond flour and it was very soft. Is this Lebkuchen supposed to be soft? My husband said Lebkuchen is hard not soft. (FYI, he is from Southern Germany).
There are so many different Lebkuchen recipes across Germany depending on where you live but this is close to my (Northern German) grandma always made ~ Anja
Hi Ainsly, I have heard that, too, from other people and they think that can happen depending on what kind of cacao powder you use. Maybe you can find another brand. That is the best answer I have but I hope it helps 😊 ~ Anja
Anything baked needs salt. I accidentally forgot the salt in some home made raised yeast bread once and it was terrible! Both the flavor and the texture were horrible, dry and nasty. The bread rose properly and had nice loft, but I never forgot salt again!

Hi, I just made it and it turned out very gummy and sticky, is that how it is supposed to be? Could it be because there's no egg? Help.
