I am making gingerbread cookies tomorrow and I also made pepper peppernuse cookies and I made Mexican wedding cookies they are different and fun to make and eat so happy to have my family watch how traditional german cookies are made this video brings so much joy for us thank you so much!!
@@cooking-the-world I dont know, I ate it in a restaurant and the waiter told me these 3 ingredients. So I tried my own version and my family loved it. I used 3/4 Elisen and 1/4 of Spekulatius. (Both bought in the store). I 'crumbled' it in the food processor, but fairly rough. The whipped cream I flavoured with cinnamon and vanilla. And than simply layered it.
Check the description for the lebkuchen recipe only to discover it's the recipe i have bookmarked and used a couple of years ago. Look forward to making them again this year 😁
My wife makes a Lebkuchen cookie from an old family recipe that came over from Germany over 100 years ago. The dough is stored for 2 weeks then baked and stored for another 2 weeks with an apple. They are a thin hard cookie which makes them perfect for dunking in coffee, They are my favorite cookie.
Thanks Korina, and to you too. Yes the time flies. I still hope that he will be a better sleeper when he gets older, because for the moment even sleep coaching doesn't work;) Lets see how he handles this many people around him during Christmas. We might need to g home already at 7pm :P
@@cooking-the-world thanks Marta. I bet Max will get tired of being passed around, pinched, kissed and hugged 😂… Must be really tough on you guys and Max specially if he’s also a light sleeper :/ hopefully he’ll become a better sleeper as he passes phases
I do not have your baking skills, so I will just imagine tasting your kitchen masterpieces :) Anything I attempt to bake will surely ruin everyone's holidays!
Yeah Scot, I know what you are talking about. My food tour business is also hugely affected. But I wouldn't be making all those videos if it wasn't, so this is a good side of it:)
I am making cookies with my 87 year old and 90 year old Aunts. So far we have made Snickerdoodles, Butter, Chocolate Chip, Anise, Mexican Wedding, Oreo Mice, and Coconut Cookies. They used to make up to 15 different kinds, but have not made any for many years now, so I thought it was time to renew the tradition. Now we need to find someone to eat them!
Oh Becky thats great. I would love to eat some of those! I have never heard of Anise, Mexican Wedding and Oreo Mice but they all sound delicious. Glad your aunties are doing so well at this age! Wow! This year I had to bake twice because by the second week of December they were all gone..
@@cooking-the-world Anise cookies are commonly served at Italian weddings. In Germany they are called Anisplatzschin. Mexican Wedding cookies have many names (my Mom called them Snowballs) but they are called Vanillekipferl in Germany. Oreo Mice are more for show - you take the top off an oreo cookie, using the cookie with cream topping as the base, and make a 'mouse' using a maraschino cherry with a stem dunked in chocolate for the body, a Hersheys Kiss for the head and sliced almonds for the ears (the chocolate holds the pieces together).
The best lebkuchen I ever had was from a market stall in Regensburg several years ago. It was the oblaten type, but chunkier. A nice change from the more finely-grained Nurnburger type.
'Nabend Marta, I used to love Lebeskuchen when I was a kid but not now sadly. I have three tasks dictated to me,by my family for Christmas. 1. Saure Sülze, I couldn't get a pigs head or even pigs cheeks so I'm making it with belly pork. 2. Fleisch Salat, that's easy, I have the Mortadella and the rest of the ingredients, just lots of chopping. 3. Herring salad, again easy, I have the Rollmops and Gherkins but I need to get the beetroot and find some fresh dill. I'm looking forward to Donnerstäg when I'll be busy all day. Frohe Weihnachten Marta, Mattias und baby.
I think we will be making prime rib with Yorkshire pudding on the Christmas day. I cooked almost all possible German dishes for videos, now I feel I need something different;)
@@cooking-the-world our Daughter in Law (schwiegertöchter?) is hosting us all for Christmas day Marta, though I'm sure my wife and our daughter will be in the kitchen helping.
I have traced my family surname back to 1642 and Morschbach, WNW of the intersection of 61 north and 50 west and Part of the Rhineland-Palatinate. It would be interesting to me to see what their traditional foods are. Could you see if it is possible to present food from that area? Thank you.
I've only ever had the Lebkuchen from Aldi that my German relatives eat. Even these are quite nice. I like the light texture, fluffy and coated in a white glaze, but still too sweet. There are so many in this video and they all look so much better.
Hahaha! I don’t like those store bought gingerbreads. I rather bake myself or go to bakery where I know they can bake from scratch:) but I guess there is no German bakery where you live…
No Gingerbread house?😉 A pie here I haven't had in a long time is mincemeat (doesn't have meat ) growing up we also had fruit cakes and Christmas pudding.Kinda fell out of fashion here I think though.Whishing you and your family a Merry Christmas.
I spent time in Germany as a child, on a US Army base. And nothing says "Christmas" to me, like German sweets. 😊 I was too young to learn the names of everything though... 🤔 So thank you so much, for sharing what's what, about German gingerbread. 🫡🍻
@@cooking-the-world I should have said the Snickerdoodle is an American cookie, I believe. I always use the Betty Crocker recipes out of an old cookbook my mom gave me. But the recipes are on their website. My mom and I use a mix of pecans and walnuts in the tea cakes.

What cookies are you baking this Christmas?

Soft sugar drop cookies with maple sugar sprinkled on top 😁
It's past Christmas but I will make the Elisenlebkuchen today.. If they turn out well I will make then next Christmas as presents..
I made a Gingerbread 'Tiramisu' with cinnamon cream, Spekulatius crumble and Elisen. I will do it for the christmas dinner, too.
Oh, is there a recipe online so I could have a look? This sounds wonderful

Fantastische Übersicht! Vielen Dank für die Presentation der verschiedenen Lebkuchen, sehr informativ.

That was my Christmas job, baking the lebkuchen and the nurnberger cookies over thanksgiving so they would be ready for Christmas.

Hahahaha, I also just started baking few years ago and I got better at it at some point. Is a matter of practise, like everything in life.
This has me missing visiting the Christkindlmarkt in Deutschland und Österreich when visiting me dad’s family. Darn this pandemic 😷 😢😭

Ate my package already. None left for Christmas Eve. 🥴But, that's okay, enjoyed the taste & memories. Frohe Weihnachten und Mele Kalikimaka
Thank Michael. I also had to bake twice because all the cookies where already gone in the second week of December :D Marry Christmas to you too!
Very nice video, thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching
We always get our Lebkuchen from Bäckerei Duell in Nürnberg. It takes some time until you receive them because they are made to order.
I love Lebkuchen from Düll!!! Those were my first Elisenlebkuchen that I tried!
