Gibraltar, located in southwestern Europe at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, is a British Overseas Territory with a long and rich history. Gibraltar has been occupied by a variety of peoples since it was first settled by the Muslim Moors in 711 AD, including the Spanish, the British, and the Phoenicians. The history of Gibraltar is a fascinating and complex one, and its strategic position, surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, has made it a coveted piece of real estate throughout its history.
The earliest recorded presence of people inhabiting Gibraltar was in 711 AD, when the Muslims Moorish leader Tarik ibn-Zeyad invaded the Rock and named it Jabal Tariq, or “Mountain of Tariq”. Since then, the strategic value of Gibraltar has been obvious: it directly overlooks the Strait of Gibraltar-the gateway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. In 1462, the Spaniards conquered Gibraltar and, for the next three centuries, the Rock remained part of the Spanish Empire. Throughout this period, the British and Spanish fought several wars over the control of the territory, culminating in the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713, which ceded the area to the British Empire in perpetuity.
During the course of the 18th and 19th centuries, Gibraltar became a British military base and an important trading port. In the early 20th century, Gibraltar’s strategic importance was again highlighted as the entrance to the Mediterranean during the two world wars. During the Second World War, Gibraltar was heavily defended by the British forces, who covered the sea route to the Suez Canal.
Today, Gibraltar is a vibrant and diverse community with a population of over 30,000. It is a popular tourist destination, and is home to the iconic Rock of Gibraltar, a 426-meter-high limestone promontory, as well as several ancient sites and monuments. The history of Gibraltar is shaped by an ever-changing cast of characters and continues to be a story of peaceful co-existence today.
