  • ‘Nana’ lost more than S$64,000 to a pig-butchering scam - a mash-up of romance and investment schemes run by Asia-based online scam syndicates. Their victims include a significant number of Mandarin speakers. (Are you the victim of a scam? Email us with your story: cnainsider@mediacorp.com.sg)
It started when she posted a TikTok video of her dog. A man who claimed to be a widower and business owner from China left a comment, and they started to converse over WhatsApp, He’d send her photos of his investments, and claimed he got insider information from his uncle who worked at a cryptocurrency exchange. She asked him how she could learn to invest.
In retrospect, Nana said she trusted him because he seemed well-off and ran his own company. She refused to believe it was a scam even when her husband tried to convince her otherwise. The impact on her family was devastating.
Here’s what she wants you to know.

It’s frustrating and I’m honestly at a loss for what to do next before it gets worse. Lucky she’s in the trust building stage and he hasn’t asked for money yet (as far as I know). I spotted this from a mile away, the whole family did and we’re trying to get her to cut the communication, but she will not listen. She trust every single word that comes out of his mouth. I hope we can save her before it’s too late.

      3) scammer may ask for financial help citing family problems as another way to get money

The longer you watch this lady, the more angry you get at her.
I'm gonna be blunt: this lady is too pretentious. Till the filming of this, she still seems to be in denial.
I can't believe she said what she did at the end; that she would confiscate all the $, etc if her friend was a victim.
Basically, she's faulting her husband and family for not confiscating things from her, implying they enabled her. Wow.
    She's all "I don't like him.
I was only interested in making friends, he was CEO of ceramics, I thought it's interesting. &
It was me who asked him to show me how to invest" 🙄😒
Seems to be making excuses for everything.
A lot of people like to make interesting "acquaintances". But we don't text & speak to them daily, many times a day. These scammers chat/talk on phone with victims for MONTHS before even bringing up investments.
This woman isn't honest to her husband.
Her husband is a very very good husband.

She downloaded an app through a recommendation of a friend
The friend was innocent though, all of them downloaded an app which allegedly will let them earn money through crypto investments
They got to know the app from other friends
Initially they did earn some money, that’s why my friend also recommended her own brother to use the app

After many years of running the business together, I realized that I was being cheated all along. Lesson learned: you can be cheated not just by a stranger, but also by a friend, even relatives. Singapore as a small country should take steps to prevent loss of individual money to scam especially using digital currency. Perhaps we can use some of the traditional security like the trusted "serial number" on old printed notes. This can be elevated to encrypted "serial number" for each digital denomination and if stolen or lost can be rendered void by issuing a new "encrypted" serial number for the specific individual digital denomination. This should be workable if the ASEAN country decides to adopt enhanced security measures for digital currency usage.

Singapore is targeted because there's a lot of loopholes in our laws and legal system ...
For example the maximum punishment for some scam cases, a person who scammed MILLIONS of dollars are only liable to be imprisoned for only up to about 7 years and/or fined something like $15k .... of course its still a good deal for the scammer as they come away still enriched by millions of dollars after serving those punishment !
Look at the case of the chinaman who took millions of dollars from an elderly and stashed much of those money into his China connections .... anther case is the CEO who swindled many millions of dollars with fake wine investment and return to sg only to face fines of a much lower amount, even with imprisonment of 7 years he still gets to live luxuriously on the surplus scammed money that he stash away elsewhere when he gets out ....

Finally, No surprise here. With all the evidence it's crystal clear who was the helper. *Charge backtools* must be taken seriously and hopefully this case improves others for the best. There are a lot of good people like this man in there. Justice has been served today, not only to me, but to all the people who have gone through the same thing that I have

SGD300k.. Thats the same ampunt my mum got scammed about 20 years back. Was by a singaporean scammer, a divorcee with a daughter attending polytechnic. If I see her again, I will really take my revenge. Her crime tore my family apart. My mum has post trauma and her personality took a 180 degree turn. I was a teenager back then and witnessed my dad sank into depression and my siblings and I grew up feeling insecure. Took time for our family to recover. That scammer that scammed my mum, got the easy sentence of serving a short time. Spent every thing she scammed off from my mum and my mum didnt get back a single cent from what she had been cheated of.

I experienced the same method used on me. She a CEO of her company telling me her uncle have insider tip on some Chinese stocks and crypto. She would response right away whenever I massage. Why would some CEO be response to me no body like me. So strange and keep insisting we stay on the topic of investing. So I told her all my stocks are in oils (before the war. Haha)... in the end she unfriended me on wechat. Lol... advice to never fall for a pretty face. 🤣

Don't be surprised !!! Even though the company name is listed in the Investor Alert List in MAS and also in other countries authorities' websites, people still choose to believe it.'
Classic story: XXX invested in this fund and now was retired now, because the fund is generating enough passive income monthly.
