My guess is if you had a 14 year old son who had just taken the shotgun off the rack and loaded it and was heading out the door to "settle" something with one of his friends, that you'd just say, fine dear, have fun.

I'm a Nigerian and I'm really ashamed of our image on the global space. I'm so sorry this innocent woman is going through this problem. The hotel manager should be arrested, I'm pretty sure she's a culprit. She initially said the cctv recording is kept for a year, how come it was deleted after 4 months?

    • @tcurry1531

I agree that somehow the hotel was involved and should be investigated. The police should check into who paid for the room in Ethiopia and Hong Kong. There are very ordinary Internet Technicians who can investigate payments and internet messages.

I've had the pleasure of visiting Nigeria (Lagos, Abuja, and a quick cross border trip to Porto Novo). There are people in the world who only know how to imagine the worst about a place and its people based on the actions of a few. You do not need to feel shame for your image, because for the haters, there's nothing that can be done to change that view. The others, those that can see past the darkness that exists every country on earth, know what gracious and kind people there are in Nigeria, which is quite remarkable given the huge ethnic groupings there. My friend, who made the initial invitation to visit Nigeria, would not stop teaching me customs, language (which one of 200+ dialects!), food, and especially the warning signs of a scam heading my way. I've gone the long way around to say it, but I agree with you. The hotel manager was, in my view, certainly in on it. While I don't think he had anything to do with the actual crime, I have no doubt that he lined her pockets well to erase or otherwise dispose of the CCTV footage.

I am sorry that some of your fellow Nigerians (likely a very small percentage of the population) engage in such dishonest and cruel behavior, all for money. There are scammers everywhere, but some of your countrymen were the first to get that image as they showed up early in the online scam game. This is just a very sad story, and I agree that something is going on with that hotel manager. Peace to you.

Why not showing or donating the CCTV the first time? It was a red flag! What about the authorities, cops etc? Are they all so corrupt and I mean in both countries!!! Only a 76 years man is doing their jobs one million times better ! Her poor daughter who traveled the world just to see her mom 15 minutes must have been her worst nightmare! Some takeaways from this sad story: She was released. In the subsequent show, she says she doesn’t understand why bad things continuously happen to her. There’s a pithy answer to this, however, everyone told her not to go, she was scammed repeatedly and still couldn’t help herself. No little alarm bells went off, nor did she have any sense of self preservation going to two very difficult travel destinations. (I would never go to either place as a single woman.) There are cruel, callous, hideous people who will take advantage of your weaknesses. They are the piranhas of humankind, and they tend to reside in larger numbers in disrupted, dysfunctional countries. Two: She is freaking lucky they sent her to Hong Kong and not to Indonesia, from which there is no return for drug traffickers except in a box. Good job to the angels who rescued her from herself. May she grow wiser with each day.

I watched subsequent videos made by the television station regarding her case. She has returned safely home and is living with her daughter now. What struck me as odd, personally, was when she was meeting with the Priest, the Attorney advocate who works with him, Her personal Attorney, and the Journalist who covered her story,to say goodbye (to the Team who won her freedom) Never Once did she simply say Thank You to any of them! She did not say thank you to her daughter as she picked her up upon her arrival, who also helped her and who she now lives with either! (as she sent all of her money and money she borrowed to the scammer) She said she is disappointed by other family members who are having a hard time forgiving her. She said SHE is the ONLY Victim in all of this - she thinks her family did not suffer, only she did. She is also already dating - maybe her family would forgive her if she spent her time reconnecting with them all and getting a job to repay them and also help out her daughter too! She seems to wish to remain a perpetual child that everyone else has to take care of. She seems to expect from others without showing any gratitude. (from what was shown in the videos anyway.)

Her daughter is accepting of her behavior and she believes that because her dad, her mother's husband who passed away, always took care of the mom that now her family should as well. This is a perfect example of why families need to teach their daughters to depend on themselves instead of depending on others. This mom is obviously looking for another man to take care of her, that is why she is putting herself back on the market. As far as some of the rest of the aren't rallying around her is that she lost over $205,000.00 in a scam. This is money her husband left her an she squandered it on a man/scam. The other family members have no more money to waste on a person who is not responsible with money. By the way I also noticed she did not say thank you to all those that helped her, to late now. I hope her daughter understands that these comments are not against her but she needs to step back and expect that her mom takes some responsibility and I am sure she has a monthly income from her husbands pension and life insurance and should step up and pay something the roof over her head.

      Well, Ms. Kathy 411
you can not say that like that.
You have to put yourself into her situation to understand the full picture.
Yes, on the first sight somebody might think that what you do.
This person or gang what I assume made all of this very smart.
This person or they have choosen a persons profile of somebody she would relate to..
      a) most likely to trust..and as I recall it from my mind the first contact online was a military doctor working for the united nations.. That's a really high ranking person of trust.
That's why she trusted this person.
Beeing together before with a police officer. The contact happend to be in 2021 according to the cronical dates of this video after 2016 her husband passed away.
2020/2021 Pandemic the so called pandemic made in China. The time of the Lockdowns and quarantines and big anxiety.
And loneliness on a high scale around the Globe 🌎
And after she sended him all the money..lots of money..she lost even her home 😳😓🤦‍♀️
and had to move back to her daughter's home..
..actually this story should be over here..Normally..
But then another Person or the same person (we don't know) the person got her attention..her friend suspects it's the same person..(that's an intersting idea)
is getting her attention online while she is writing her book about the scam..
..and out of money as she is..drown out of everything..and then she gets again online and having a conversation with somebody she trusts and he is giving her a ticket for a vacation..
If she would have a single cell she could request to have the police cap and picture of her husband and family at her cell..
And her Bible. And the Constitution of her country.
That would give her some more hope and privacy.
I hope and pray that she may come out of this chinese prison one day soon.
I hope this TV Station will make another story about that particular case then again.
It was very well and professionally made.
Let's hope and pray may she be free someday soon in the future. She does not deserve to be in that chinese prison any day longer.

      There is just one thing
I do not understand. Married online??
      Since when is that possible??
      This is ridiculous.
      Who is getting married online?
There rules and laws to that.
A marriage and a divorce are a very personal thing.
Both should happen in person. As a ceremony. Eye to Eye signing also the papers of the absolutely important papers for lifetime.
Anything else I would consider as illegal.

For goodness sakes, Never say never. Seriously. In fact, of the 2.4 million scam reports in 2021, young people are still the fastest growing demographic - and more likely to report being victimized by scams. These scams grow more and more sophisticated by the day.
For example, in 2021, Gen Xers, Millennials, and Gen Z young adults (ages 18-59) were 34% more likely than older adults (ages 60+) to report losing money to fraud.
Consumers reported losing almost $8.8 billion to scams and fraud in 2022, up 30% over 2021’s losses, according to newly released numbers from the (FTC). The rising cost of these crimes is staggering, considering that in 2020 Americans lost only $3.5 billion to fraud, including identity theft.

I know I'd never have thought someone paying for my trip was doing it for nefarious reasons, well other than sex but not to hide drugs in buttons and use me as a drug mule. Granted, I'd never have accepted the free trip from someone I'd never met but that's because I tend to distrust things that are too good to be true.
I think she had a lovely marriage and was surrounded by good, honest people, and evil like this would never have entered her mind. It's horrible that monsters prey on innocent people and that people blame the victim for what happened.

I would like to give a very sincere & heartfelt “thank you” to Father John, Jane & Michael Arthur for the work that you’re doing. What a Dream Team you were for that whole family & also for all of the other families in similar circumstances. I tip my cap to all 3 of you. 🧢

Immature needy woman! What a terrible story of this 64 yo Canadian woman, but I was struck by how she was victimizing herself to her daughter. Saying things like “I don’t even want you to know what it’s like here!” I think that is worse than saying. It’s dirty crowded smelly etc. Imagination of the listener can be greater than the mother’s reality. She sounds immature and needy, the mom that is.

To be first scammed out of all your money, then put in major debt and then jail for the rest of your life in another country is unbelievable! Why won’t the court system there have some sort of investigation into these cases. Seems crazy that they are allowed to just throw people in prison and throw away the key. So sad!

I am from Addis Ababa. How can a hotel manager, who was aware of the case and who was asked to deliver and refused, have deleted the CCTV video document? It may be customer protection. But it must also be seen from the perspective of protecting the innocent and the community, which I think is more valuable. I think the money, the money that was probably found from the same business, played a big role. Regardless of whether victim is released or not, I hope that one day the truth will be served and everyone must strive for this revelation, especially the Ethiopian security and police authorities. I strongly believe that justice will be delivered.

Daughter probably did try to stop her but she cannot physically lock up her mother from doing what she wants, no matter how crazy or dumb. Unless the mom is mentally ill but she wasn’t diagnosed with anything. She was just lonely and found fake friends online. It’s easy to judge behind a screen but for families in this position, their loved one can be very stubborn and feelings can be very mixed
