How We Busted A Taiwan Phone Scam Syndicate | Catching A Scammer | Full Episode

  • What does it take to catch a scammer?
    The first episode takes us to Taiwan - home to the some of the world’s most sophisticated phone scam syndicates. What have the police & prosecutors learnt after spending decades in a cat-and-mouse game with them?
    One syndicate is now targeting Singapore. You might even have picked up a call like that - they first impersonate staff from Ministry of Health, but later discovers that “China police” is looking for you. And once you are tricked, you’d be transferring your life savings to them for investigation.
    Police and prosecutors across Taiwan and Singapore sit down with us to share the inside story. With just the victims’ phones, how do they weed out the scam call centres hidden deep within Taiwan? And why is it a nail-biting process to prove the crooks have done it, even after catching them in the act?
    And more importantly, how do we get all that scammed money back?
    =====
    About the show: Investigators behind Asia’s biggest scam busts reveal nail-biting and unreal details of their hunt in this three-part docuseries.

      Punishment must be very very very sever, mean have evidence and do not confess, they will stay in police custody without trial for as long as it takes. Give them free food 3 times per day and let they think hard. Law must be harsh just like them, no mercy shown. Not how to crack them !!!

    As for me, once I received that call, I play the buddha chant. Then later, I forward the scam contact number from the Truecaller app to Scam Shield app or police report with the scammer's contact number. Then, I let the police handle this case. Normally, the scammer call-up is the same group but a different person only and they can be traced. At the end of the day, I did not receive any scammer calls till now (used to be every 3 days a call or two or a 1-week one-time call). We need to fight back by creating awareness or forwarding that contact to the police rather than letting them scam others. So, we can have lesser calls or no calls from them. Try to share this with others to stop them from bothering us.

    Great documentary, but I have to say, the Taiwan Police is not very good at dealing with this type of bust, the first bust, they have no intel on the building, not even sure which floor they are located on, they have done zero recon on suspects and entry points, leading to a failure busting in giving the scammers so much time to destroy evidence, here we would have first try to rent a floor to gather intel and mark the suspects, second, they knew this is a huge operation and well planned, we would have treated them like drug dealers, assuming many heavy doors and many locks, so the next best entry point would be from the windows after dropping in from the floor above, and finally when they stopped the car, every one in the car should be treated as a suspect, cuffed first and ask questions later to minimize the chance of any of them destroying evidence, we can all see they are doing their best and have worked very hard on this case, all credits to them, may be this will give them more experience for their next bust. Good luck guys.

    Scams can never be eradicated because governments around the world do not see this problem as a threat to national security and are therefore so passive to this problem. They only issue warnings to people but rarely arrest the scammers. Many politicians are friends of drug traffickers, we do not know if it is the same for scammers.

    I was a scam victim for less than a month before in Malaysia with a huge losses. Most of the scam victims they all had little or no awareness about the police standard code of conduct (like me) causing many fall to the scammer's threatening call. I personally very regret this as most of the fear and anxiety taken over in many victim's mind to a point that they can surrender everything they had to the scammers. I learnt a lot from this incident and I hope authorities could display the code of conduct via roadside notice board or a handbook so everyone can read thus understand. 99% of the scammer would be defeated this way

    Very funny. Reset phone especially iPhone, SG police from forensic science dept. should be able to retrieve destroyed data. Wondering why Taiwan police so scare of phone destroy? The data destroyed is only on phone itself, but iCloud still kept all the data. That’s why owners of iPhone are not too worried if phone get stolen or lost as another phone can be used to reset the existing phone data and new phone can download all the existing data from iCloud again.

    Many years ago(1980s-1990s), in the HongKong movies, they always have many gangsters. It is fiction but probably reflects real situations. So the Hong Kong gangsters always escape to Taiwan. There are definitely some organised crimes in Taiwan. Nowadays , the criminals are at Phillipines and Cambodia. Why because they are always associated with Casinos and Cambodia has so many Casinos. Singapore's most famous gangster was called Mr Big. operated out from Amsterdam. He wrote a book or something. His facts is in wikipedia. Now we don't know who is the biggest gangsters. Malaysia has many gangsters. This is something we have to watch for. Some violence can be expected as now they remove death penalty from the drug trafficking activities. At some point in time , crimes may increase if the Malaysian police is not strong.

      The working language in Singapore is English, hence English is spoken in all the commercial offices, government offices and retail areas. We are bilingual, and can speak Mandarin together with English in working environment and also out of it. I can’t say the same for places like Taiwan, mainland china or Hong Kong where only Mandarin or Cantonese are used and the people have trouble communicating in English which is the universal language!
