I know...they should've listened to Rune. In my mind I always blamed Gryz for pressuring the party into facing Zio when they weren't prepared, but then again Alys instinctively protected Chaz from the black wave. She was such a great heroine!
Well... Alys is the favorite character for many humans who played SEGA's games. I cry every time I hear this music. So strong, sad and spirited... It is wonderful!
Sega doesn't get enough credit for pioneering a lot of the more adult style of story telling that didn't show up till much later installments of FF series. Everyone seems to skip over the Phantasy Star series and it's really good story telling and willingness to kill about any character off LOL
I know this is 13 years too late, but Alys' death was definitely foreshadowed.. you just had to talk to the gravedigger and Mito the Foretuneteller in Aiedo to find it.
Such a sad moment... Alys' death could have been averted if the party knew what was going on, but it was also necessary for them to realise what was going on.
I think its because the art style with its indicative panels coneyed so much more character than the sprites could, so to me PS stands over FF in terms of characters because I can 'see' character, i will always ALWAYS remeber the panel of Alys leaning/sitting in the windowsill while Hahn tell her of a new dilemma and she quotes him a price to deal with it "My-my wedding fund!"
Totally agree. Comics style narration was really great step for PS series. They took you out from the flat isometric surface and shown you character expression, or other perspectives of the world around. They were still 2D images but they gave you some hints you could bind together with your imagination. In addition personally I like PS because of the sci-fi post apocalyptic setting. Fun stuff is that Algol solar system really exists and it is a triple star system where the third star has really huge orbit (around 600 years). Not sure if the story is based on that or its just coincidence.
@GiveMeTheApple me as well, I think this was a scarring and never forgetablle moment for me as a kid. I still remember her fondly and wish I could set things right. The moment when you talked to her elderly neighbour and they asked if they could return some dishes because Alys had cooked her up some food, 'and was such a good cook.' small stab in the chest.
RIP Alys, the last descendant of Alis Landale, the very first Phantasy Star protagonist and the first truly progressive woman in gaming. She died like her great-grandmother of 2000 years past, putting everything on the line to save those she cared for. An entire bloodline of true heroes and heroines.
This is an amazing arrangement. I'm so glad they lowered the key a whole step from the original track. To my ear it's more somber and powerful this way.
@omarhjawaid Exactly, we never saw it coming, shows how quickly tragedy can strike. Just like in the original LUNAR, when the Grindery shot down Vane from all the way in the Frontier. Again, they never saw it coming.
Agreed with you totally. I think it is because of all the emotions the characters show during cutscenes that made them grow on me. In FFVII there were no facial expressions, and in the CGI segments the characters still looked like Lego people. Plus Aeris had a shallow personality anyways, and the way she died didn't really make sense.
I think the game version is sadder, along with the scene it made me cry several time's but the arranged version didn't even once make me cry but still, they did a great job!
For a long time it was a classic JRPG tradision. You either lose somethign you care VERY deeply for (family, mentor, lover) or you had to sacrfise yourself.
I don't know how I feel about this collection of redone music. It's better than just taking 16 bit music and making it with a full orchestra. But I'unno.
I remember downloading this track from Napster back in the early 2000s and thought it was lovely (never played Phantasy Star Genesis games--still haven't in 2022), but this track always stuck with me.
@@TitaRussellTrails I kinda wish they kept that aspect in the other games, especially since there was a pic of PSIV that had that part (which sadly never made into the game).
I don't know what's more depressing, Alys' death or the fake Alys fight later on in the Anger Tower
I know...they should've listened to Rune. In my mind I always blamed Gryz for pressuring the party into facing Zio when they weren't prepared, but then again Alys instinctively protected Chaz from the black wave. She was such a great heroine!
7 years late, but i read heroine as homie lmaoo
Well... Alys is the favorite character for many humans who played SEGA's games. I cry every time I hear this music. So strong, sad and spirited... It is wonderful!
Couldn't agree with you more. . .
One of the saddest songs ever made. . .Even my girlfriend really loves this song.
This is really beautiful...
When Alys died it made me cry. And the song was so sad that it really heightened the moment.
I love it when it becomes a rock ballad toward the end. Simply beautiful AND it carries the emotions much better than the genesis version
Alys Brangwin was one of the greatest heroines from the sega generation. Thanks 4 the upload!
I'm an hour late but it has been exactly 10 years since this video was first posted.. I love this song so much..
This song still makes me cry...
Aeris's death was foreshadowed. Alys's death was not. It just kind of punched you in the throat.
Kinda like real life.
The difference (along with Nei as well) is you were supposed to die! She saved your life!

There was some foreshadowing such as with the fortune teller in Aiedo, but the game didn't do it all that much in thr main story.
I know this is 13 years too late, but Alys' death was definitely foreshadowed.. you just had to talk to the gravedigger and Mito the Foretuneteller in Aiedo to find it.
This arranged version always summon "The Onion Ninjas" near me... :/, like "Sorrow Long Day", ending theme of Evilzone game (Eretzvaju)
Such a sad moment... Alys' death could have been averted if the party knew what was going on, but it was also necessary for them to realise what was going on.
When I heard the news of Reiko Kodama's passing, my mind immediately came to think of this music.
Just hearing that guitar reminds me of the 90s and that style was in re1 when Rebecca saves Chris.

@@baumkuchen6543 It's name means "Demon Star". Lovecraft also wrote a story about it called "Beyond The Wall Of Sleep".
It's also very close to us so that makes it that much scarier!
I DL'ed the game for Wii recently. Thanks to the internet, I knew it was going to happen but still I felt pretty depressed when it did.

Goosebumps!!
man this game is underrated

@Trapster2 Oddly enough it sounds sadder in it's original 16 bit format.
This one has a lot more warmth to it, I think it better reflects her passing. It's still sad, but in her heart she was a very warm person.
@omarhjawaid

Her Last Breath covered by Whitesnake. Heh that's what it sounds like to me anyway. Fucking amazing.

Beautiful
the beginning reminds me of the "save room theme" of resident evil :)
heh by the time Aeris' death happened i was all ready jaded form Nei and especially Alys... she was the big sister i never had ;_;
What about big sister Kyra?
@@robertramsey8871 Kyra can go to hell for using a Boomerang/Slicer just like Alys.
always reminded me of Hotel California
Wow that's a great rendition.
Wow, didn't see this coming, good one
Her outfit reminds me of the Ramarl from PSO
Just wonderful :)
What is it with Phantasy Star and dead protagonists.

Even the first one, apparently he knew Odin.
From the first Phantasy Star game to Online huh?
Where can I buy this track 👂👍
@SyriusBelsferg Or Neal Schon of Journey loves PS4, their guitar styles are very similar.
@millgiass
Indeed, this one is more like starway to heavenish than sad
Epic.

😭😭😭😭😭
@GiveMeTheApple Hey don't get me wrong but I missed both
What CD was this from?
Sounds like Etrian odyssey
A dungeon crawler with a first person view like in Phantasy Star 1?
@@ikagura yes

._. this isn't bad but the game music was bettah.
I'm sorry.
