This death affects me way more than Aerith in FF7. And I think it has to do with the combination of it coming out of nowhere, the fact that the art style is much more capable of emoting, and the music that's absolutely hand-crafted to stab you RIGHT in the heart.
Also the fact that Alys is MUCH more important (since it was Rika's second experience of death with someone close to her, Chaz losing his mother-figure and Rune losing someone very precious to him) that Aeris in FFVII.
100% agree. I played PSIV when it first came out and man this hit me so hard. The music just made this scene so perfect. Not to say the latter wasn't sad but this game was just so great, it really stuck with me.
@@baho5523 also, the way FF7 is, Aeris is more of a martyr/necessary sacrifice because of the whole Holy/Lifestream thing. This feels a lot more organic and natural.
IMO Alys's death hits harder because she actually sacrificed herself trying to protect Chaz, and it all happens so quickly and suddenly. She doesn't die immediately, making you hope that maybe Rune can do something about it with his powers. And then it turns out she can't be saved, and she dies... just like that.
I played this as a kid. When she died I figured If my party was higher in level it wouldn't have happened so I continued from the last save and slowly gained like 10 levels only have her die again. Hit me hard.
This is a great example of one of the(if not the best)most beautiful soundtracks on not only Sega but in any video game period. So much emotion and feelings ...
I think why this scene is so moving is the lack of words...once she dies...you feel the silence in the room. Powerful imagery too (the pics of chaz and rune). Sometimes to give the effect you need, you gotta take out dialouge.
Also the picture of Alys' head upside in the dark...it has a surreal quality to it. I have to wonder what the psychology behind it's emotional impact is. It's very morbid.
The first death scene I ever saw in a video game, before FF7 was released. It fairly seemed to trigger a more emotional angle to my writing. Emotion can be important, though these days emotion is rare in games and in much of the media.
i still have this game. sadly this is still the most moving part for me :) this is the game that started me on Rpgs, and i will always remember the fact that this is what has got me to were i am :) the worst part is i still have the genesis and the cartridge to this game lawl nice vid man (or hun based on yourself) :)
This game was a huge step in terms of presentation. But as a whole, it was a good balance compared to other rpgs. Music was different, the designs were a bit more old fashion, the sci fi. The beginning of the clip was funny and the end sad but not depressing. But Zio making it personal probably made him a step up as a character as well.

Even to this day, just listening to "Her Last Breath" brings tears to my eyes... Current day game studios do not typically write good enough stories for me to actually feel much when characters die... There are exceptions but they are rare.

This death destroyed me in my youth, I love Alys- and then... Zio was slain. First time in my life I fought for vengenance.
