  • This video shows low light performance of both Sony a7siii and Sony a7iii.
    Observation:
    1. On base ISO Sony a7siii looks cleaner
    2. Shadows look cleaner on a7iii till ISO 6400 but starting 12800 Sony a7siii footage looks really clean in shadows as well compared to a7iii. So a7siii does have a dual native iso it seems :)
    3. In this test I feel a7iii was more consistent in terms of low light performance (ignore the color banding as that's a side effect of 8 bit footage I think)
Note: Sony A7Siii seems to have a crop in 4k as compared to A7iii.
    Lens Used: Samyang 85mm f1.4 at f/1.4
    Shot in XAVCS 4k 24p, PP9 (Slog3) Ungraded
    WB: Daylight
    Sony A7Siii - footage is 4:2:2 10 bit and Sony A7iii footage is 4:2:0 8 bit
PS: Guys, Let me know if you need the SOC footage, if I see enough interest, will share it.

Very nice Ankit! Keep that A7SIII content coming. I have my A7SIII preordered and I can't wait to test it side by side with my A7III and A7RIV! 😀

Thanks Paul and congratulations on the new A7SIII, I can guarantee you will love it. I am bad at color correction and grading but the footage is so easy to work with , just loving it.

why would you use slog3 in lowlight environment? and why would you compare it to a standard profile?

Hey John..both cams are set to slog3 and not to a standard PP. Slog3 is supposed to have more lattitude than the standard PP that's why I prefer it over the standard PP

I did a side by side test and noticed that the a7III is better than the a7S3 in image quality until about 8000-10000. After that the a7S3 is better and with 10 bit it's the right tool for low light. If you do no grading then the a7iii is your camera up to 8000 iso and save $1500.

Oh ..I have had this camera only for two days and could play with slog3 only. And in that profile I definitely saw some improvements in a7s3 starting 12800 ISO. And in the description I have also mentioned Sony a73 looked more consistent if you ignore the artifacts. And I wouldn't advice anyone to go for a7s3 just based on the low light performance.
Having said that I tried color correction and basic grade with a7s3 slog3 footage and coming from a73 I could feel the value of 10bit. It's so easy to do and feels like you can do more. Auto focussing is much improved. I still need to try slow motion but so far loving sony a7siii.

@whole27 ya I know ...as I focus more on videos and timelapses and sony a73 that I have is more than enough for timelaps but in video I always felt I couldn't make the colors look good. With a7s3 with my limited grasp on color grading I feel I am able to do more and the footage is a good starter for learning color grading as well. Other than 10 bit ..4k 120 was the other feature that made me get it. Low light capabilities are at par with a73 and probably a slightly better because of the dual ISO.
Having said that if you're looking for a real hybrid camera This wouldn't be the best choice. And I have sold 3 sony bodies till date and could never get more than half of the original price in india. So the re sale value is not that great and I think A74 would be a much better hybrid option and the compromise could be ..not having 4k 120.

I think getting 24-105 would be the best option if you're looking for a zoom lens. It's very sharp ..I've used it for almost a year and never had any issue. Getting it as a kit with sony a7s3 ..you'll get it much cheaper as well.
And for your use case I feel a7s3 would be more than enough even for photos. It lacks only if you want to get bigger prints but for social media..home albums it would be more than enough. Unless you like to crop your image a lot.
For audio I would say just get rode video mic ..the smaller one..it's cheap, light and audio is of good quality. Camera mic would never sound good.

Ya I get it ..the idea behind this video was to have different areas in one scene in terms of exposure so it is easier to judge how the camera is handling different areas on high and low iso. But will be making a video soon with low light in the scene.
