- Which is the strongest crowbar? Cheap one, expensive one or aluminium crowbar? How many tons they can take? We are going to test that out with our 150 ton hydraulic press and 150 ton force sensor. Don't try this at home! we are professional and all people were behind really strong blast shield and had personal protection equipment.

I'm glad I could watch some Twitch from the hospital. Was discharged on Friday, but will have at least one more week off from work to continue resting and recovering at home. Still slow getting up and down and moving around with either a walker or wheelchair.

Im sure the expensive one went through a much more extensive hardening process. It chipped because it is well tempered. The soft steel ones would deform before chipping/cracking.

I highly suspect it has a treatment that gives it spring steel characteristics. I was very impressed by it's ability to return to shape. Straight hardening would make it brittle. In essence, by giving it flexibility, as a spring, it is able to resist simple ductile bending, as well as hardened shattering. By flexing naturally, it continues to put the maximum strength into the end as possible.
I think it was pretty weird how long it stayed at 0kg
@@MrSopuli3 I say the 100 Euro bar was the best value for money by a wide margin.
The other bars didn't see over 200Kg until they were severely bent.
From the standpoint of resisting force and returning to original form the 100 Euro bar was performing well above the rest in price to performance.
The cheap bars performed so poorly I'd suspect the alloy they used was really dirty.

It was super scary to do this video :D People in our twitch stream were sure that we are going to die but we had really good safety planning and shield at place so we were able to do this one safely. But it was still nerve wrecking to watch them getting bent like this

Ideally you would want the bar to deform and not shatter, for safety reasons. That being said, I wouldn't want to do this without a few layers of protection just incase.

Wow, that €100 bar didn't even permanently deform. That's actually pretty impressive, even if the end chipped.
When I think how much potential energy is welled up under compression on those bars, I become VERY happy I'm observing this in a video rather than on-site!

It looked like the expensive one returned to its normal shape much better than the others. Not only did it handle more force, it went back to close to its original shape after you pressed it. Also, you made a great rig to hold those crowbars but the table you had it on was wobbly as hell! lmao!

Tie a rope to stuff like that in case it lets loose.
Tracing the bars onto the cardboard before testing would show the deformation really well.
Perfect example of steel with different yield strength. The expensive one have probably 2-3 times higher yield strength. However the elastic stiffness is the same for all of them. Difference is that the stiffness keeps on longer for the expensive one hence higher load, while the others yields early without carrying more load.
As Lauri mentions the bigger dimensions of the expensive one also helps increasing load.

My best guess as well, but it's not quite like the tire bead breakers you see doing a google image search. When I searched "aluminium pry bar" I found almost an exact match from a company called "Hultafors". Seems they are used mainly in auto shops for adjusting alignment. The softer aluminium does not damage the surface it is used against.
We use them in machine shops to adjust parts on the machine tables.

Most steel alloys have the same approximate stiffness, but not strength. The weak steel will plastically deform at the same stress that the stronger alloys will recover from. The higher number of the good crowbar comes from the fact that it bent further without plastic deformation, not because it is stiffer.

@jon doe they both bent under pressure. But the cheap one stayed bent afterwards and the expensive one bounced back into shape

You're loading the sensor unevenly, so your pressure readings are likely inaccurate

@@mortarsquad12 But the sensor is being loaded off-kilter, at an angle. Notice how the force on the LCD seems to jump up when one of the bars make contact with the center of the press surface.
Yeah I think it is jammed due to uneven loading. There’s some serious force required to deform those bars.
Also, as the press surface gets lower the effective length of the bar (lever) becomes shorter which causes more force to be needed to bend the bar, since the leverage has been reduced. This is kind of a mess and they need to develop a press surface which exerts the effort against the bar at a fixed point instead of a variable one.

Actually, I am glad to see that they all just bend. When using these I am afraid that they will fracture and pieces fly. I seriously doubt I will put 100’s pounds of pressure on mine!

Important takeaway - the expensive one took a lot to bend, almost toppled their rig, and came back very nearly to true.

As a kid I always wanted the "titanium crowbar" in the classic size and shape (like first one tested) I'd see in Cavalry Magazine. I still do, now that I think about it.... Pritty guud!

When you were bending the crowbars, the contact point changed on the force meter head, would that not move the distance from the turning point and therefore change the amount of force needed, there was a steep increase once the bar was flat against the head. given they all went flat near enough your final measurements are probably equivalent. Lots of bendy bar fun :)
I'd like to see a load sensor on the claw end to see how much force was applied by the crowbar.

The main thing is the expensive one didn't permanently deform nearly as much as the cheaper ones did, it took a huge bend and rebounded back to where it started. Meaning its fatigue strength is going to be significantly better than the others.

The expensive one retained most shape. It also appeared to have further hardened ends. The cheap red one was also good at keeping its shape.

I’ve worked as a die setter for stamping press for years, and I’d have to say a nice crowbar/pry bar is easily my favorite tool. I do wish that this test was performed alternatively on the working end of the bar, and the anchor was at the handle. The length of the bar should have some spring to it, but the hook should be solid

For the expensive one you are paying for the steel used and the heat treat. It's pretty amazing that it pretty much sprung back to its original shape. I've had knives bend pretty bad while splitting wood only to come out straight when I was done. Nothing like a good heat treat.

If you try this again, maybe try making an outline of the bars on a sheet of cardboard before you press it to compare the changes in shape and angles of the bars that happen as you press it.

It should be pointed out that the amount of deformation after the force is taken off is an important factor in the quality as well.
All but the most expensive crowbar had quite some permanent deformation, ak plastic deformation, so they are a softer kind of steel.
The expensive one however sprung almost completely back in its initial shape, which tells that it is made from a high grade steel and well hardened and tempered to get a good combination of hardness and elasticity.
The yellow crowbar could be bent when just using human strenght without any extension.
I think the aluminium crowbar is used in montage when it is important not to scratch or damage surfaces of the parts you're working on.

I have a cheesy, cheap crow bar I bought about 20 years ago. It has been very handy over the years. I know for sure it wouldn't last long on your press but it sure does come in handy to me. Currently using it on my truck for some repairs.

You are switching the point of attack of the down-force, your lever shortens at the end. That is why the force always goes up at the end.
It's important to note that the vast majority of force applied to this is not in the downward direction, towards to sensor, it's being diverted since it's a lever, applying significant force to the join and to the cube of metal holding it in place.
a bit of analysis:
the cheap tools (#3 and #4) bend at the "elbow" where stresses are highest
tool #1 doesn't bend at the elbow because it is wider and was work hardened in the forging process, instead the steel starts flowing just above where stress is highest in the part that retained its original yield limit
tool #2 is made of stronger steel and might be heat treated. it is also shaped differently with lower stress concentration. it bends far less than the others.
#5 is a piece of alu

Cool video thanks! I think your sensor is getting 'jammed' from the unequal force on the one (left) side of the piston. Once the aluminum bar bends and starts pushing evenly and then more on the right side, the sensor reading finally kicks in, albeit a bit late. There are several ways to mitigate this, mostly just making a smaller, longer press-bit to keep the forces more to the centre of the press. We still got some very cool test data here. Product comparisons, ftw!
The pressure is concentrated at the bend of the bars so the best two places to pick up the true forces is at the bend or the pressing point on the handle.

Thor's hammer of crown bars! Wow, I have shattered so many crows in 20yrs+ of construction. I've never seen a bar take pressure like that and "bounce" back.
A good measure for quality of this tools, i think it's the return in his original shape (or near it) when the press come up.. index of nice heat treatment.. (sorry for bad english)
These tests are interesting but are imperfect as you could test both ends of the crow bar and pry bar (the aluminium T-1000 blade like thing) and finally try break the bar in a strong jig to determine its power.
Maybe 2-3 more tests would help narrow down which is the best tool.
The final number jumps up because the punch of your press is wide and the point you are pushing on gets much closer to the fulcrum. Therefore giving you less leverage at the end. You need a pointy attachment so the distance from the fulcrum doesn't change.
At first my heart broke seeing you put a Hultafors in there.. and then I watched it spring back to life and laugh it off. I had no need for a 120 prybar but I guess I'm buying one :-)

Like to see this repeated with real crow bars and/or a burke bar. Best part of this is that even the cheap crap didn't fail catastrophically. When I have my hands on one end I like knowing I can feel it give long before anything goes snap. If your numbers are even close than I can load up a long bar way more than I thought as I've bent plenty of them in my time.

I'd like to see you stack weights on top of that sensor and see if the calibration is still good, or if the sensor is borked.
