I rewatch this analysis at least twice every year. It’s scary how relevant this continues to become, and I wish I could broadcast this video everywhere
Catching Fire was great. My only issue was that in the books Katniss and Peeta go through all of the old tapes to see how past victors won. Readers got to see the beautiful deadly world that Haymitch competed in and we got to see how he won (It was down to him and a chick from District 2. His entrails were spilling out. She was missing an eye. He headed to the edge of the arena and threw his ax. It bounced off the forcefield and hit the girl chasing him in the forehead.) It reflects Katniss's destruction of the arena and explains why the Capital killed Haymitch's family, friends, and girlfriend. He exploited their weakness. I really wanted to see him win :(
A. Clancularius Lol yeah that's why he's drunk all the time. He has no one to open up to and knew he couldn't seek vengeance or even confront them. Alcohol is the only way to escape the pain. I wanted to see a flashback with teenage Haymitch :( He was supposed to be really chill and nonchalant about fighting to the death.
I think many people don't watch this video because they don't care about the future, like many people in this world. They don't care about their problems until they happen. But it's nice to have people realize what genius this video is,and those people still give this earth hope.
The biggest problem with The Hunger Game movies is they make Katniss too sympathetic. In the book she's that girl that nobody likes, even before the games. She's painfully narcissistic and cruel. When talking with Pita he asks:"Did you like kissing me" K: "sometimes". P "What about Gale?" K: "He's not a bad kisser either" G: "And it was OK with both of us? You kissing the other?" K: "No it wasn't OK with either of you. But I wasn't asking your permission." Katness finally realizes that Peeta exposed her when she says "Finally he can see me for who I really am. Violent. Distrustful. Manipulative. Deadly...And I hate him for it."
Here is an interesting article that corresponds with a lot of the claims we made in our Catching Fire Epic Review. "NASA-funded study: industrial civilization headed for 'irreversible collapse": www.theguardian.com/environment/earth-insight/2014/mar/14/nasa-civilisation-irreversible-collapse-study-scientists
Bravo CBG19. I love this video and think it is your best work yet. You did forget one even older book that warned us of this coming, the Bible. Great video and God bless.
formless777 We can just stop destroying the environment at an ever accelerating rate.- Terraforming other worlds (Mars arguably the best candidate) is far more harder than going to Mars (which we never got close to in the 70s). takes centuries minimum (if not thousands of years) to terraform. We dont have the technology/resources/time. - Realisticly: its not too late to save the civilization. We need to stop spreading greenhouse gasses, switch to clean energy among other things (eating less meat or producing sustainable meat for ex). It is actually possible to do these things. We just lack the political will. Not resources, technology, time (not yet). Easier than colonizing the Galaxy, Star Wars Style or darkening the sky to block the sunlight, Matrix Style Sci-fi ideas.
I really appreciate your pop culture thought, and I have enjoyed your show almost from it's beginning, but you come off as completely undisciplined in philosophy or political science. You don't see a logical inconsistency in your largely "take down the man" arguments being made while you support the vast expansion of government power? If only I had a nickel for every-time someone blamed the remnants of the free market and the liberty of individuals, for the tragedies created by these monopolies of aggression...
Everything that was mentioned in this video scared me. but it was interesting to know all of this stuff. This video should be shared on social media and get people to open their eyes and wake up.
Absolutely a wonderful documentary. I can honestly say nothing on TH-cam has made me think and get a little emotional as this piece did. This piece should have nominated for an award.
i have no idea why i clicked on this video. i just did. i have to say though that i'm glad i did. i use to work for my local Hot Topic and man oh man there was a crazy amount of young people raving about this movie/book. i never did any research on it because it all seemed like the kind of fan base that Twilight had but with a Battle Royal "twist" i guess i would say. there is a lot more here than i thought and now that i have watched this, i think i might have to give the movies or books a shot. thanks for posting this video. it was very well thought out and well produced. i also really like how you say "my opinion" instead of just saying something and making it seem as a fact. many people get carried away (myself included) sometimes when talking about something they are or can be passionate about so its easy to forget that. needless to say i have subscribed and am going to watch more of your more recent uploads!
CBG I became a vegetarian about a month ago because I felt a strong disconnect from the animals I was eating. I just started questioning how can burger king sell 1 euro hamburgers? The answer was simple they treat animals with as little care as possible to maximize profit. The animals are just kept alive and treated as money machines. Corporate companies treat their employees with the same amount of respect. We are not people to them, we are just machines manipulated into making their money. I really admire your work and I feel that its a important message to send. You go girl!!
Never stop doing this. You open my eyes to themes I never noticed before. This was simply superb and all your passion and hard work comes through in spades. Keep doing you CBG19!
If I would have known the video was going to be this well made, I would have paid for it when you initially released it a while back. I will 100% purchase ANY documentary-type things you make. Wow. Awesome job, seriously.
This video is awesome! As a History teacher from Mexico, this video pretty much sums up what every single revolution in History is about. Thank you for bringing it up and giving a fresh face to History. I'll be definitely using this video in my classes.
Hey, I'm from Mexico and I can see that this whole idea is sprending everywhere. Thanks for giving us your point of view and help to rise up awareness of what's happening. Absolutely loved it. Keep moving forward.
I generally enjoy watching your reviews of movies and was not expecting such a thoughtful and artfully composed message. Thank you for not just being pop-culture nerd but also engaging in and contributing to our future.
This is everything that was going through my mind when I saw Catching Fire. I tried to verbalize it but I wasn't successful. This is absolutely brilliant. I have said, " Stop falling for the left/right paradigm" for a long time now. It is a divide and conquere technique used by the government for social engineering. We cannot truly change for the better until people wake up and realize that the polarization between left and right is intentional and meant to divide us so that we don't see the real problems, the real enemy, and demand significant change. We identify ourselves as left or right and as long as people fall for this simple trick, we will continue to lose our country one bill or one court decision at a time. Catching fire is more than a silly movie, it is strong social commentary and I saw it as a warning. This is Maybe the best TH-cam video I've ever seen. Pay special attention to (16:45-18:27)
Thank you for making this video. I love that you talk about more than just the pop culture of the movie. You brought out the meaning and symbolism of the story forward.
I've watched this video so many times and shared it with almost everyone I know. The level of thought you put into how the movie relates to the current situations that the global community faces is incredibly impressive. I think that this review is the definitive analysis of the movie and the metaphors of it. Keep up the good work. I love all your videos and can't wait to see what you have planned next. I'd love to see some more retro reviews too.
When I saw the first HG I really detested the style this dystopian society had been presented in (-this is a genre I'm a huge fan of btw! Even helped host a pre-screening event for its debut) However, your analysis changed my stance on the series. I noticed a lot of the themes you mentioned during first viewing, but your documentary actually made me want to watch the movies again & to re-assess. Hunger Games DOES helps acknowledge how a controlling society effects its people, and provides a powerful platform for new viewers of the genre. Awesome channel! You turned me into a subscriber!
That is a frakking awesome documentary, D. Your motivation is contagious and I totally admire your commitment to encourage people to educate themselves and to be aware of what our society is going through. Keep up the great work.
Wow, this is one of the best videos i have ever seen. A very comprehensive look at a movie's theme and its parallels to our society. These are all toughs ideas i have entertained myself for the past decade. BTW. 3D Printers are on the verge of becoming replicators
I really, REALLY, LOVED what you did here. At first I was extremely impressed and excited about the symbolism and lore you dug out and linked to the book, along with the scene breakdowns. It was so well-researched, -informed and -presented I could hardly believe I finally saw someone go to such lengths for it. And then I saw the political and environmental angle you took and how you expanded on that and I was really mind blown. I never hoped I would see it be done for "non-classical" books yet, not with such seriousness, at least. Very, very impressive work.
I must admit, this really did make me think. For a long time I stayed ignorant of these problems, but these days I've been finding it harder and harder to keep my mind in this comfortable little bubble of ignorance. Ignorance is bliss, but I guess we all must wake up someday (._.)
What i find ironic is that the gossip rags like E!, who gush over 'The Hunger Games' as much as they gushed over 'Twilight' (Because it's a book written by a woman about a young female antagonist) fail to realize that it's a satire ON THEM, and their 'reality show' culture. If Ryan Seacrest ever figured that out, he would've sued Suzann Collins for liable, and slander because he can't handle the possibility that Americans will get tired of watching 'American Idol', and 'The Kardashians' demanding for something better.
I really liked this video. You gave me a lot of things to think about. You should do more videos like this! I also appreciate that you put links in the description.
Hey ComicGirl19! I totally LOVED your work on this one! Not only I 100% concur with your interpretation of THG, but also find inspiring your last cry for taking these conclussions to one's life and attitude towards things. I've been on the spanish Occupy (15M) since 2011, but sometimes one feels tired and alone in this world, and I find artworks such as THG to be a fresh breeze. I already loved your GOT pieces, but I'm totally amazed on this. Thanks for your work!
A very impressive and informative doc, really enjoyed it. Its nice to know there are still people who see and (most importantly) do something to fix the problem. I live in SF and everyday i see the upper class slowly pushing the working class out of the city, soon it will be impossible to live here. Keep up the great work CBG19!
This was amazing! I thoroughly enjoyed this documentary - you guys put so much time and effort and it really shows! Thank you so much for this amazing video - keep up the amazing work!! :D
Wow, I came here expecting a full on scene-for-scene review of the movie, but instead it was so much more than that and you completely blew my mind. I don't get why this hasn't hit more views, that was amazing. So eye-opening, so well thought out. Thank you for this.
CB19 confuses dictatorship with Fascism. There is a difference, All Fascist leaders are dictators, not all dictators are Fascists. Fascism has the following characterises; 1. Social Darwinism 2. Militarism 3. Nationalism - Racism can come in here, but not always. 4. Cult of personality 5. Incoherent economics (this is a personal opinion) 6. Gender Roles and other forms of strict social ideals 7. Totalitarism Many of these things are interlinked and Fascism is a bit more complex than just that. I could do a whole essay on why Fascism is not Communism. However, one thing can be said for sure, not all dictators are Fascist, and to say that they are deprives the word of its meaning. Neither Stalin, Kim Jong il or President Snow can accurately be described as Fascist and whether Saddam Hussein and Bashar-Al-Assad (both Ba'athists) can be described as Fascist is debatable. President Snow doesn't espouse Social Darwinism, Militarism, Nationalism, Racism, Sexism or even Totalitarianism really. Snow doesn't seem to have any actual ideology behind his dictatorship, beyond just 'do what I tell you to do, I'm great'. This is one of my biggest criticisms of the series, dictatorship and Fascism happen in real life partly because they are persuasive. Collins is annoying simplistic when it comes to the politics of Panem...
The entanglement of the position of a dictator and "fascism" is historic. The Fasci was *the* symbol of *state authority* throughout the Roman Republic, even before there was the first dictator (e.g. Gaius Julius Caesar). In order to emphasise legislation put into execution the decrees were presented to the public (lat. populus: "the mob") by men bearing a bundle of sticks with a hatchet, the Fasci. Fascism has none whatsoever to do with racist segregation or discrimination, eugenics, militarism or the other things you pointed out. Fascism is *superior state authority*, be it the House of Representatives ( with two giant Fasci behind the rostum ) or a single dictatorship somewhere in western Asia. In modern days corporations have infiltrated and taken over the legislative process and are about to capture the executive branch ( i.e. private police and military contractors: watch "War, Inc." for a sarcastic/cynical approach to that issue). *They* -- being legal entities -- have now more or less power over the state, therefore power over the government, hence "corporate fascism". So, from an historical viewpoint -- and that is the only point that really counts at the end of the day -- the government described in "Hunger Games" is flat out fascist, meaning *superior state authority*, with all the baggage that comes with it eventually. Oh, and before the Hitlertainment is about to hit the fan: The NSDAP regime in Germany from 1933-1945 was a *national socialist (counter-)revolution* which ended up in a dictatorship. Of course it did. That's what socialist revolutions generally do because they're not *evolutions* but always end where they've started.
If to you, Facism just means 'superior state authority' then what is the difference between Facism and Totalitarianism? We already have a million and one ways to describe tyrannical governments, reducing fascism to a vague catch-all term is both unhelpful and inaccurate. Mussolini, Hitler and Franco all share ideological similarities beyond just being dictators and practicing totalitarianism. By eliminating any meaningful word for this ideology, all you're doing is making it difficult to study, compare and contrast. I study Political Ideologies at Degree level, so believe me, it's useful to have meaningful words. Yes, you're right, the Fasci was a symbol of *Roman* state authority. That's why Mussolini chose it as a personal symbol and named the ideology after it. Mussolini, a proud Italian, wanted to re-build the Roman Empire. It had less to do with what the symbol meant and more to do with the fact it was Roman. One of the defining characteristics of Fascism is militarism. It's justified by nationalism and itself justifies tight social and moral control over the state. I never said that a Fascism state is inherently racist, its not. But, if you're espousing that you're nation is almost mystically superior to every other nation, and the your country is ethnically homogenous, then obviously ethnicity comes into it. Your nationality and your ethnicity can be very, very closely linked especially if 'your people' have inhabited a region since antiquity.
That's the thing with origins and their "isms" that are named after them. The "isms" are seldomly that what the original intended to be. Let's put it the following way: If the corporate and roman definitions of fascism apply (which they do ;) ), the European Union is a fascist construct because it claims *superior authority* over its "provinces" ... that'd be the member nations. To top it all off, its legislation is dominated by corporations. I wouldn't go so far and call the EU militaristic toward its member citizens but nonetheless it is a fascist construct, and I have to live in it whether I like it or not. The only thing it is not (yet) is a dictatorship, although the chairman of the EU-commission is rather close to the real thing but w/o the personality cult. More like a spider in the web.
Fascism, as an ideology, was coined and invented by Mussolini, not by corporations and not by the Romans. He may of drawn upon previous ideas, but as a whole Fascism is his ideology which Hitler and other Fascists later admired and adopted. I'm not going to get into specific examples, and believe me we have very different opinions of the EU, this is a matter of the definition of words. *Fascism does not mean superior authority* Fascism means the complex ideology adopted by Hitler, Mussolini and Franco. It does not just mean claiming superior authority over somewhere. If you reject that meaning of the word Fascist. Please tell me an alternative word that describes that *type* of dictator? A specific word, that would exclude people like Stalin or Ayatollah Ali Kha or even Idi Amin. The direct word for what you're describing is probably *Hegemony* which, according to the Oxford English dictionary, means; 'Leadership or dominance, especially by one state or social group over others:' Other, more specific, words may also describe what you mean, including; Authoritarianism Despotism Plutocracy Imperialism Frankly, for a state to exist it must claim superior authority. Otherwise all law would be invalid. Even in a democracy, the state, with the backing of the collective, claims superior authority over individuals and regions. But, that is unrelated to an argument over the definition of Fascism.
I couldn't agree more. Also, stating that this series of books and movies somehow relate to the decline and fall of the Roman Empire is a bit of a stretch in my opinion. Furthermore, while the causes she gives are a valid point, I believe she oversimplifies the decline and fall of Rome.
This was amazing, thank you and everybody who had a hand in creating this video. This gave me a lot to think about. As a species if we don't wake up to the problems knocking on our door, when everyhthing goes to shit, we'll only have ourselves to blame. Things need to change..I need to change. Thank you.
I'm one of those people whose main goal in life is to be happy. . . and people look at me like I'm a loser for prioritising my happiness over an education and a job that pays good money.
I don't think that happiness I'd a valid goal in life, but I don't think money is either. As long as there are those in this world who suffer without the basic necessities of life then we have a responsibility to them. At the very least, don't take from society, there are people who need that money who never even had the opportunity to work.
Funny... just wrote an exam essay today and I brought up the majority of the issues you brought out in this video. As a Hunger Games fan, I am proud to say I have made a lot of these connections already, but you really shined a new light on the Roman Empire and how the book, and our society relates to it. I just wanted to say thanks for always speaking your mind and not be afraid :)
This video truly was "Epic." I know some people don't like social commentaries because they're uncomfortable, but the way you present history and comment on society in relation to popular culture is refreshing. Great job, CBG19 team!
Wow, this was amazing. At first I was like 'Uh 40 minutes? No thanks. TTLY.' but then I just got sucked in and all of your points really hit hard. We have to write persuasive essays and do a speech over it in my English class. I wasn't sure about my topic, but after watching this I know what I want to do. I want to persuade my generation to face destiny, stop thinking about themselves, put two feet forward, and make sacrifices for the good of humanity.
You disect Catching Fire and relate it to our world splendidly! I'm aware to the themes used in the book, but this video had me think our situation over and over again in depth and every possible angle. Great job!
This is why I love you CBG19, not only are you a comicbook & movie nerd like myself but your also waking people up to what's going on in our world, I bring up a all of these topics up to people all the time but some are such in a narcoleptic state of mind there just rude too you are they just deny that it's happening & it's also due too lack of information but see that's the point, because there so programmed by the T.V. (& other forms programming) they don't CARE! to research, there to busy trying to obtain all the things the T.V. & the government tells them is important !!! (Can't wait for the Gravity! Review, it was my fav movie too for 2013 & probably my fav movie in a long time !!!)
best thing i've ever seen. I love listening to you dissect things. If this were all you did i couldn't get enough! this video moved me so much i had to pause. seriously. i haven't read the books or seen the second movie, but the minute this video is over, im starting the books.
Best video I've seen from you! You are not the only one thinking about this and it's good to see that you are doing something about it. You got me thinking. .........
1984 is a great book, but the ending is kind of depressing. I also am love the use James Newton Howard's score in this video. The score is so beautiful
Me to, it's nice to think in depth about this movie, and how it relates to the past, present, and possible future. At the moment, I don't have anyone in my life, to discuss these things. I don't know what thoughts came up for you, but I'd love to spend some time with someone life yourself. As for "Bread, and Circuses," I'm an aspiring songwriter, but I can't stand watching American Idol, The Voice, or any of them. I've always felt that we all need to look at the big picture, and if you can see it, it's time to take the red pill.
Jaime Flor I feel the same. When I try to talk about these subjects people look blankly at me as if I'm talking in a foreign language, which I suspect I am. Even when I do find someone who will talk about big issues all they seem to just want to blow off steam, great but I'm passed that now and I want to start working towards actually solving these problems and liberating people. (And anyone who says I can't do that can go fuck themselves) I don't know who to turn to or where to get advice from. First thing is to break this bullshit taboo that you shouldn't talk about religion or politics, I wonder whose benefit that social custom is for, hmm.
This turned out to be so concerning yet so inspirational, I congratulate you CBG19, you have done a great documentary, this deserves MANY more views, people need to realize and start changing so the world can change. The future is in our hands. I'm happy I watched this.
It's interesting you start the video saying that the Hunger Games is a possibility of a future we should avoid, yet, if you think about it, the radical laws and rules of Panem are disturbingly similar to North Korea. I actually wondered at first if the Hunger Games books were a metaphor for the north Korean regime. It's crazy that level of evil is allowed to exist. I thought the world wouldn't let another evil person like Hitler to rule, but hence, it's happening in North Korea. But Panem isn't an unimaginable state that our future world could mirror. As for north America, well if we keep moving in the direction we are: protect and empower the rich to get richer, and oppress the poor and minorities, then we aren't too far from the world they live in if you ask me.
Three years might have passed from the release of this video and it is still relevant (and so it still will be in years to come, I suspect). Amazing job CBG19, keep at it! (ou
Okay the reasons Rome fell can not be outlined in 5 short little notes. Rome fell for so many reasons. Entire books have been written about it's rise and fall and how it fell. And I would say that one of the many reasons it fell was it's LACK of military spending they came to rely on barbarian hordes to much and giving them the best weapons and armor in the world at the time. Then the barbarian hordes just turned on the Romans which directly lead to their fall.
I love the music at the end. I may actually watch a Hunger Games movie now because of you. Thank you for your care and effort you put into these videos.
These video is amazing. I can't believe I have only just now found it. Your insights are spot on. I don't often run across people who were able to see the deeper meanings and connections that the Hunger Games has to both our past and our future. Brava!
***** Remeber when calling someone a Troll had actual meaning? Probably not. Now it's just "Oh, you left a slightly mean comment, your such a troll." um, no. That's not what a fucking trolling is,
I dont undestand the poin of your complaints. If you knew it, or you dont are interested, so just dont fucking see the complete 42 minutes. Case closed.
Girl, this review is top notch. Found you a month ago or so, just watched and read all of the books/movies (most of them for a second time) and you have done your work. I shall now go poke around to try and find a mockingjay review :P
I wasn't expecting such a well thought out depiction of our government in a Hunger Games vlog. I do want to touch on some points you made. Yes, our government is obviously ruled by corporations. When having insurance is law, it should at least make you wonder who is making this 'law'. Fascism, though, is where most people don't have a good grasp of history. Yes, it did have a single dictator in charge, at least that is what we perceived from the outside looking in. They had a similar structure of government to what we have today. The people elected Hitler. They nationalized their banks, whereas, we have the Federal Reserve make our banking policy. And what history will overlook, due to the horror of the concentration camps and the fact they were the bad guys, is how corporations really ran the show in Germany. BMW was manufacturing the war machine and making tons of money doing so. They were profiting off of war very much like America is doing today. Fascism is better described as a merger of corporation and government as the ruling establishment. Thus, America can be seen as the Fourth Reich, if we don't change our ways. Love your shit, Danika.
+L Dub III Great diagnosis, but there is one more question: Are governments always going to end up being run by corporations? (that is, is it inevitable, no matter how honest are the supposedly new politiicians we elect) If you answer YES, then probably you might be a potential libertarian. If you answer NO, go do some political activism and come back to me when you realise the answers seemed to be yes
+Juan Andrés Ramírez Corporations wouldn't be corporations if they didn't try to maximize their profit, and making laws to help with this greed is the easiest way to do so. But let's just say I read a lot. Since Syria is on everyone's radar recently, let's start there. They are not owned by corporations. They have mostly nationalized business with mostly large state enterprises and private owned small business. They are socialist, whereas the leaders can take what they feel like taking. This differs greatly from corporations taking what they can get away with. And this is why America has a presence in Syria. We want to make them slaves to the banks, the corporation. I'd say half of the world is socialist in a similar aspect to Syria, counting Russia and China. I am a libertarian, Juan, and an economics major with a worldly view. All conflict on this planet can come down to one thing - possession. The romantic might write a story about love, but we fight wars for land and resources. The point you're trying to make is false. All governments are not ruled by corporations. There is a line drawn, and sides have been taken.
L Dub III I agree, we do fight for resources but -and you know this as an economics major- corporations wouldn't be "corporations" withtout first having a State ruling the economy. I'm not necessarily advocating for anarchocapitalism but definitely limited subsidiary government. We all want resources, but we can either obtain them by bargaining with others in voluntary free market transactions or we can use governmente -that is, the aparatus for coercion- to force others into surrendering their stuff over to us. And btw, you're seriously going to call yourself libertarian while saying that "political leaders can only achieve what they convince people to give by talking"? Really? And believe me, no socialist government ever needed US intervention to go bankrupt, alienate their citizens and deplete their resources while leaving an intrincate web of corruption in its place
+Juan Andrés Ramírez I don't believe you understand what a libertarian is. We believe in the Constitution. Our current government doesn't. What you said I said: "political leaders can only achieve what they convince people to give by talking"? Really?" I suppose that came out of your magic hat. You're still wrong though, corporations are owned by shareholders and have actual rights given to them by the 14th Amendment. Socialist nationalized businesses do not have such rights. Corporations are also above the state, as any well read American should now. Many corporations move their entity overseas to avoid paying taxes. Ultimately, socialist states are large in number and are not owned by corporations.
+L Dub III That is one form of libertarianism; Constitutionalism. Alas, that isn't a singular concept, either. And good on your for pointing out that the 14th Amendment, while laying the groundwork for ending the second citizenhood of blacks, also unchained for the corporate predators. Lastly, there are few "socialist states" in the world, if any; Scandinavia is a favoured target amongst US talk-show hosts and various foolish pundits to label as such, though it is not. It is a (number of ) mixed-market economic societ(ies) with extensive social safety nets. You could of course call it "Socialist-Capitalism", but that's foolish, isn't it?
The ideas, research, writing, music and editing are so good in this video that I think this is the standard by which other videos CBG19 and her crew do in the future. This shows the ability to broaden out the analysis and tackle more than just the analysis of a movie, or a standard movie review. That is to make many of these analyses so much more. Also the evidence with respect to the science, the social analysis, etc.. is really on target. It is quite well researched and whoever is doing this research, be it CBG19 herself or her staff can really be proud of this work. I am also quite surprised that such a small outfit is capable of such smooth, compelling and impressive audio and video editing.
I agree with everything you said .....your really right...when I talk to people about this stuff they dont care ..i mean we can learn so much from this series without actually going through any of the traumatic events ..im glad you have a following who is listening and understanding this ! thank you for this documentary !
Love, love, love this video, so well done!! I showed this to my parents and my mother literally exclaimed "this is awesome!" I work with LGBTQ youth and college students in my community and will be giving this out as recommended viewing to my students. Applying a critical lens to US politics by use of fiction and historical reference is really quite effective, quite lovely. It's so well researched, I really hope you make another one when they finish the Mockingjay movies, there's so much more you could talk about in that book. Your other movie reviews were what convinced me to finally read the books, thank you. :)
One little edit, not really important, you know what you're talking about when you describe this issue, you just use the wrong word. Deficit is just how much more the US spends in a year than is allotted in the annual budget, the debt is how much the US owes collectively.
The acronym changes as we attempt to account for the poeple we forgot, before it was LGBTQ we had the G go first; GLBT, but then we switched the GL in order to center the Lesbian community and help shift away from sexist views in the overarching community.
Also with the name "Panem", consider the concept of Pan slavism. It gives the idea that they are unified, forcibly, into a rather unstable whole. This is similar to satellite states in the Soviet Union being forced by the Union to get along and pretend everything is good. When you say Panem it can also be considered as "Pan AM" meaning pan America and the forced cohesion and yet the obvious dissention between districts with the unifying coefficient being the centralized power.
This video is thought provoking and AWESOME. I wish you could make more videos like this. Because of your documentary video, I now think the Hunger Games movies are great and have a much deeper appreciation for them. With the exception of 1 or 2 points, I agree with all the points you make. I already knew most of the things you mention in the Video. Yet, you put them together, along with a few other things I previously did not know about, in a coherent easy-to-understand way. Once the Mockingjay Part 2 is available on DVD, I will buy all the Hunger Games DVDs using your Amazon Weblink.
The Hunger Games series is maybe the most inspirational film series of all time because in Thailand and HongKong people protesting against their oppressive government used the Mockingjay finger symbol and using the Mockingjay symbol was prohibited and protesters arrested for using it. I have been watching your channel for while Comic book girl 19 and this video really hit home for me. Thank you so much for using your platform to draw comparisons from what we all love in fantasy to what we all know in reality. Please keep it up! Sincerely, A big fan of change.
This video needs to be shown everywhere!. It's the cold, hard truth that us as the next generation needs to know. I support this video 500%. If she goes down for this, I am going down with her. Well Done.
This analysis gets more and more relevant every year...
yes it does
Indeed
Yep
I rewatch this analysis at least twice every year. It’s scary how relevant this continues to become, and I wish I could broadcast this video everywhere
And now with the 2020 black lives movement going on... oh boy!
I really wanted to see him win :(
Update: Haymitch's opponent was from D1. And it was she who threw the ax which rebounded and hit her in the forehead,
I was hoping for the scene to come -n;
Zikomo7 great insight ; I loved the movies and feel like I wanna read the books to really nerd out on it. These characters are so moving
This was more epic, than most professional documentaries in the last 10 years.
And yet, so very few views.
I think many people don't watch this video because they don't care about the future, like many people in this world. They don't care about their problems until they happen. But it's nice to have people realize what genius this video is,and those people still give this earth hope.
Still come back to this video every year. Such a phenomenal video and everything is still highly relevant
my favorite line from catching fire is "it must be a pretty fragile system if it be brought down by a few berries"
But I wasn't asking your permission."
Katness finally realizes that Peeta exposed her when she says "Finally he can see me for who I really am. Violent. Distrustful. Manipulative. Deadly...And I hate him for it."
I agree, she was a very realistic character, with a powerful dark side.
You're totally right, bro!
Frozen
I’m watching this in 2021 and the world seems to be getting closer and closer to a nightmare than it was in 2014 when Danika made it 😞😞
_"You ain't seen nothing yet"_ Expect a global hunger crisis in 2023. Throughout history, famine was most often the reason for war.
Here is an interesting article that corresponds with a lot of the claims we made in our Catching Fire Epic Review. "NASA-funded study: industrial civilization headed for 'irreversible collapse":
www.theguardian.com/environment/earth-insight/2014/mar/14/nasa-civilisation-irreversible-collapse-study-scientists
Such a smartie comicbookgirl19 xoxoxox
If only I had a nickel for every-time someone blamed the remnants of the free market and the liberty of individuals, for the tragedies created by these monopolies of aggression...
formless777 very true
Everything that was mentioned in this video scared me. but it was interesting to know all of this stuff. This video should be shared on social media and get people to open their eyes and wake up.
Revisiting this analysis year after year. Thank you for keeping it up! It's relevance ceases to fade.
When Mockinjay comes out on DVD and Blu Ray, you really need to do another one of these epic reviews.
Never stop doing this. You open my eyes to themes I never noticed before. This was simply superb and all your passion and hard work comes through in spades. Keep doing you CBG19!
In my opinion, that's the best work you've ever done! You can be really proud and I am very happy that you are a part of the evolution.
Thank you for putting in so much time and effort into this video! Just loved it!
If I would have known the video was going to be this well made, I would have paid for it when you initially released it a while back. I will 100% purchase ANY documentary-type things you make. Wow. Awesome job, seriously.
This was 9 years ago, nothing is better today...
This video is awesome! As a History teacher from Mexico, this video pretty much sums up what every single revolution in History is about. Thank you for bringing it up and giving a fresh face to History. I'll be definitely using this video in my classes.
I had to take out a pen and paper for notes because this is so insightful. Great job!
Hey, I'm from Mexico and I can see that this whole idea is sprending everywhere. Thanks for giving us your point of view and help to rise up awareness of what's happening. Absolutely loved it. Keep moving forward.
It's not the 75th Quarter Quell, it's the 75th Hunger Games and 3rd Quarter Quell
You are very correct.
If it was the 75th Quarter Quell, it would be the 1,875th annual Hunger Games Lol
@@Blodreina45maphs
I never would have known there is so much to this movie. Very compelling as well as eye catching. I am numb.
The whole world needs to see this , that was amazing, thank you for opening my eyes
Singlehandedly the most enthralling and motivating documentary i've seen in my whole life.
Great work you've caught my attention
When I saw the first HG I really detested the style this dystopian society had been presented in (-this is a genre I'm a huge fan of btw! Even helped host a pre-screening event for its debut)
However, your analysis changed my stance on the series.
Cbg19 you're my favorite person on youtube. Your show is really well done and nobody goes so in depth with their reviews.
I really liked this video. You gave me a lot of things to think about. You should do more videos like this! I also appreciate that you put links in the description.
This is so amazing! Really well made and I can see how well you did your research on everything. Mind blown.
This video needs to be in more places and needs to be viewed by a lot more people.
Thank you CB19, thank you for creating compelling content that never ceases to inspire me. You truly are a role model for this generation.
Again, one of the best videos on TH-cam.
every once in a while I come back to this video and I'm always as afraid that it's always relevant
Amazing review/Doc as always. You've really out done yourself 19!
This was amazing! I thoroughly enjoyed this documentary - you guys put so much time and effort and it really shows! Thank you so much for this amazing video - keep up the amazing work!! :D
another great documentary by cbg19.
more please :-)
even great can't describe that awesome documentary
Wow, I came here expecting a full on scene-for-scene review of the movie, but instead it was so much more than that and you completely blew my mind. I don't get why this hasn't hit more views, that was amazing. So eye-opening, so well thought out. Thank you for this.
How 'bout a House Baratheon: Epic Docu-Review. FULL 42min Documentary?
I'd buy THAT for THREE dollars!
CB19 confuses dictatorship with Fascism. There is a difference,
All Fascist leaders are dictators, not all dictators are Fascists.
Fascism has the following characterises;
1. Social Darwinism
2. Militarism
3. Nationalism - Racism can come in here, but not always.
4. Cult of personality
5. Incoherent economics (this is a personal opinion)
6. Gender Roles and other forms of strict social ideals
7. Totalitarism
Many of these things are interlinked and Fascism is a bit more complex than just that.
Oh, and before the Hitlertainment is about to hit the fan:
The NSDAP regime in Germany from 1933-1945 was a *national socialist (counter-)revolution* which ended up in a dictatorship.
Let's put it the following way:
If the corporate and roman definitions of fascism apply (which they do ;) ), the European Union is a fascist construct because it claims *superior authority* over its "provinces" ... that'd be the member nations.
*Fascism does not mean superior authority*
Fascism means the complex ideology adopted by Hitler, Mussolini and Franco. It does not just mean claiming superior authority over somewhere.
If you reject that meaning of the word Fascist. Please tell me an alternative word that describes that *type* of dictator? A specific word, that would exclude people like Stalin or Ayatollah Ali Kha or even Idi Amin.
The direct word for what you're describing is probably *Hegemony* which, according to the Oxford English dictionary, means;
'Leadership or dominance, especially by one state or social group over others:'
Other, more specific, words may also describe what you mean, including;
Authoritarianism
Despotism
Plutocracy
Imperialism
Frankly, for a state to exist it must claim superior authority.
Thank you.
That video was so mind blowing I still think about it. So good!
Mike Hunt to me happiness is a goal. I would appreciate that you didn't talk to me like I'm stupid though :)
Funny... just wrote an exam essay today and I brought up the majority of the issues you brought out in this video. As a Hunger Games fan, I am proud to say I have made a lot of these connections already, but you really shined a new light on the Roman Empire and how the book, and our society relates to it. I just wanted to say thanks for always speaking your mind and not be afraid :)
I had no idea Comicbookgirl 19 was so deep and aware on the geo-political spectrum. I am now even a bigger fan now!
This video truly was "Epic." I know some people don't like social commentaries because they're uncomfortable, but the way you present history and comment on society in relation to popular culture is refreshing. Great job, CBG19 team!
So I decided to rewatch this today and it’s even scarier now... 🤔
Thank you so much to go through all this effort not just to review a movie but also send a real message! Keep going, you are awesome!
Love your discourses! Very well-thought out and always explains so much of the hidden symbolisms!
Now in 2020 and with the way things are currently going we're heading for the full on apocalypse.
May the odds be ever in your favour.
PSA: The comment above was made before the coronavirus pandemic began.
I love this type of videos. I hope they come back soon.
This is awesome! It got me thinking
Jaime Flor
I feel the same.

Still, such a relevant video. Please make more like this.

These video is amazing. I can't believe I have only just now found it. Your insights are spot on. I don't often run across people who were able to see the deeper meanings and connections that the Hunger Games has to both our past and our future. Brava!

+L Dub III Great diagnosis, but there is one more question:
Are governments always going to end up being run by corporations? (that is, is it inevitable, no matter how honest are the supposedly new politiicians we elect)
If you answer YES, then probably you might be a potential libertarian.
This got deep...
***** Do you people just keep putting letters on? I remember when it was "Lesbian and Gay = LG". Now its LGBTQ.
Frederik Sørensen LG is a company in case you didn't know.
MadSwedishGamer No shit Einstein.
The acronym changes as we attempt to account for the poeple we forgot, before it was LGBTQ we had the G go first; GLBT, but then we switched the GL in order to center the Lesbian community and help shift away from sexist views in the overarching community.
Of all of the videos you have done, this one has been my fav! Well done! Cheers!!!
You are really smart. You opened my eyes about things I did'nt even pick up, during the film. Very insightful.
thanks for this awesome review
This video is thought provoking and AWESOME. I wish you could make more videos like this. Because of your documentary video, I now think the Hunger Games movies are great and have a much deeper appreciation for them.
With the exception of 1 or 2 points, I agree with all the points you make. I already knew most of the things you mention in the Video. Yet, you put them together, along with a few other things I previously did not know about, in a coherent easy-to-understand way.
Once the Mockingjay Part 2 is available on DVD, I will buy all the Hunger Games DVDs using your Amazon Weblink.
your analysis is beyond relevant right now
The Hunger Games series is maybe the most inspirational film series of all time because in Thailand and HongKong people protesting against their oppressive government used the Mockingjay finger symbol and using the Mockingjay symbol was prohibited and protesters arrested for using it. Life is imitating art in these countries.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the prequel book!
I have been watching your channel for while Comic book girl 19 and this video really hit home for me. Thank you so much for using your platform to draw comparisons from what we all love in fantasy to what we all know in reality. Please keep it up! Sincerely, A big fan of change.
I wish more people watched this documentary before the election.
Should've went with Sanders.
This video needs to be shown everywhere!. It's the cold, hard truth that us as the next generation needs to know. I support this video 500%. If she goes down for this, I am going down with her. Well Done.
30:25 Never knew CBG was part of the millions... AND MILLIONS... of The Rock's fans
I got a good chuckle out of that part too lol
In my opinion, this is the best catching fire review I have ever heard and seen. Good job!
Are you saying we need a real life Mockingjay? HOLY SHIIIIIT
