@dangitjm You can also poison High Lord Wolnir by not waking him up and instead, walking up to his hand and just poison him through either the staff or pyromancy spell. I did this last playthrough and it was truly cheese. Just took a very long time with pyromancy as I didnt have the staff. Just to let you know :)

If you play a poison build, you play the long game. It's not about doing damage quickly. It's about making your opponent run out of estus before you do. It doesn't matter if they run away or stand and fight, you just poke them and retreat repeatedly until they realize that their only option is to run. I used Anri's Straight sword and resin to get bleed and poison AND passive healing. So while the opponent loses health, I gain health for every second they don't press the attack.
psh, that's lame. 45 luck, 99 hollow, as much dex and stamina you can get(attunement can be used too, though it depends on where you want to use this build) rhotten poison ghru dagger, any ability shield(and parry shield as well if you feel fancy, it won't hurt), hollow bandit knife, and poison infused notched whip or bleed infused spotted whip(can't remember which of the two can't be infused) you'll become their worst nightmare, they'll never be able to get those status effects off of them, adding in a storyteller staff for field control will just make it better if you know when to use it. the playstyle is pretty simple, use the ghru dagger till they're poisoned, change to the bandit knife to use as main, if they get close a lot, parry, dodge or use the staff to put some distance between you and him, if they use cover to try and cure themselves, use the staff and the whip to keep them on their toes, if they keep on playing defensive, just keep on hitting em with your dagger, eventually they'll succumb to either the poison or bleed. note: the ghru dagger has the sole purpose of inflicting poison, the whip serves only to make them panic seeing that it makes both statuses go up and that it goes through walls, same goes for the staff which most likely won't poison them, also being the bandit knife hollow you can buff it with whatever you like, you may also get only 40 luck and have a hollow shield in your left hand.

89 and still kicking You do realize how fucked up that sounds right? Killing new players that have no possible way to react to a tactic widely available later in the game.
Have you ever even tried invading in the High Wall? It’s password summoned gank squads the whole way. At this point, there aren’t really new people playing through the game. I have poison on my SL16 +1 build that I use at the High Wall and the poison effectively makes it so that the host doesn’t get to have any estus since it’ll all be spent recovering from poison damage. It’s also unlikely that the host bothered to buy any of the 5 poison moss clumps the shrine handmaiden sells so it’s a sure thing. I’ll poison the host and then turn my attention to the phantoms since the host is as good as dead. Loads of fun to use, but can only really be used effectively very early on when poison is actually impactful. It’s also barely even a twink thing to tech in since poison gems, the Farron coal, and the ghru weapons are all available fairly early on.
Darius Penner I invade people at mid level 60~. Plenty of people, in plenty of levels. Twinking doesn’t really matter after level 60 or so; you can get almost every item by this point. If you invade people at low level, especially twinks, you just want to be over powered and over prepared compared to your targets. Invading players that don’t even have +1 estus is just sad. Pathetic even, go play with people on an even field or don’t play at all. What about gank squads at low level? Who cares? If you need to password summon 3 friends immediately after the tutorial, you seriously need help, and me invading you at this point doesn’t really prove or help anything.
Invading at low levels is fun because of how you can min max your builds for survivability, high damage, or some sort of gimmick like a SL7 millwood greatbow build. It also makes the PvE more challenging since in setting it up your limited on both your SL and how much you can upgrade your weapon. And as I said earlier, poison at the High Wall is barely even twinking since poison is available very early on. From there it’s an elemental longsword and a high vigor stat. The amount of estus that I have or the other rings I’m using are barely even a factor once poison procs since it essentially takes away most, if not all, of the host’s estus. And get off your high horse about twinking. You act as though there’s anyone new playing the game. I did an hour of invasions with this build when I first made it and got 2 solo hosts the whole time. Everything else was gank squads. Try invading the area for once and see how pitiful your 1 or 2 base level estus are.
My favorite is poison infused spiked mace, gives you the poise to trade, has enormous poison build up (over 220), and also adds bleed build up which can be paired with other builds.
Poison works really great for me actually, the extra damage you get in when not having to hit someone. If you are aggressive and on someone you can get a couple hundred damage in on someone without making contact which is great. Pluuuus for PvE and playing solo it works out pretty damn good too. Toxic and Poison stack. PvE dont cure it. You can have blessed and Simple items to restore points over time. So if you are having trouble and are playing solo its a good choice. But playing with a friend or against an invader it helps a bit out. May not be the best damage but you can get people through walls. Its all in how you use it like any weapon or spell in this game. Nearly every thing is viable in this game. But this is just from my opinions and experience
EDIT: Toxic mist is very fun to use in Irithyll Dungeon! The tight corridors make it very effective! Try using the White Hair talisman with it for replenishment or even Tears of Denial.
if you are afraid for opening a chest or dont want fight the mimic just use the storyteller. He won't be aggressive towards you so you can sit back and watch him while he will be poisoned to death in his own chest
I lol'd when the guy rolled off the Carthus bridge. I once threw Emit Force at an Invader, and his reaction was to dodge it - By rolling off the bridge : D Poison and Toxic was fun in DS2 / SOFTS. Shocking as hell how much damage it did there!
By chance, I happened upon a storyteller staff the first time I killed one of those... (storyteller bird dudes?l) I didn't know it was an item that I should have had to grind to find. But I used that thing for the rest of my playthrough AND I used it while invading other players in the Irithyll Dungeons. The pressure I could apply to people panicking in that area was amazing.
Don't forget that Poison and Toxic are separate status effects, so you can stack them. Also, if an enemy is vulnerable to one, they're almost always vulnerable to the other as well. Storyteller Staff + Pyro Flame with Toxic Mist allows you to melt anything not outright immune to them.
Heck yeah! Love poison builds. I'm certainly on the sadistic side. Love seeing people panic roll and try to flee while poisoned. I love getting inside their head, chasing them down until they get sloppy and try to heal, or lash out in a desperate attempt to finish me before the poison finishes them.
@@DronesOverTheMoon It's honestly surprising how many people aren't ready with moss on hand. But maybe that's to be expected when they're ambushed with poison outside of the obligatory From Software poison area.
@@psycholuigiman i mean that really only works on people that is bad at pvp and are cowards. poison is very useless when the other player just chases you down. the dmg from the poison is so low that when someone does use it in a pvp i just tank the hits and out trade them to death since a poison build doesn't have great weapon ars lmao
@@ragingnep Have you ever tried an actually decent poison build? Once you proc the poison with a single combo, all you have to do is play evasively. 9 times out of 10, the other guy gets sloppy and ends up open for a couple more pokes.
@@psycholuigiman sounds like your playing with bad players. All I have to do to counter that is just put on regen items. If your just gonna play like a coward after poison is on I'll put on my regen items and negate basically all the poison damage.
Great video. Another thing i'd like to add is that i personally use a poison infused dagger. It's weapon art quickstep allows you to dodge pretty much any form of attack head on, then you can spam attack till you inflict status, this is easier since the weapon is quick and will continuously break poise and even guard of an enemy. When facing single opponents in pvp, i rely on a poison dagger and an irithyll st sword. The dagger i generally use early on to inflict poison status and then continuously apply pressure with irithyll straight sword. The lingering poison effect and the frost status inflicted can be quite a pain. Basically a dagger and a short sword will let you apply severe pressure on your opponent in a one on one fight. This doesnt work when facing multiple opponents though. Pair these weapons with armor of thorns and youve got quite a build. Just make sure you abuse quickstep weapon art and rolling s. Bonus if you equip caestus. With caped armor sets, it's not particularly visible long as you keep rolling and equip carthus milk ring for maximum effect. Keep in mind that without a decent melee damage weapon, poison builds can be difficult to pull off. All in all, a great video that highlights what i think is an underrated strategy.
Watching this video again in 2019 and remembering that at max sl invasions I recently used poison to get rid of tears. Proc poison, get enemy low on health, proc tears, profit.
I used Arstor's for a low level invader, like close to base stats almost, and it did work. I didn't have to travel into Farron Keep to get it, and leveling it up once gave it enough damage to wreck shop early. at +1, it has 18 more AR than the Ghru spear, which may not seem much, but most early level encounters have relatively weak armor and defenses to go with it. Technically you could use the Ghru stuff at even lower levels than Arstors, but as an invader, getting free HP whenever ANY enemy dies can come in handy when you have low level estus.
Contemplating infusing the Ghru Spear with Bleed, as no spear has innate bleed, the higher bleed over poison level will be handy as bleed doesn't have a timer to wait for between bleeds, and the poison comes as an effect after you've already bleed the foe and are probably on your way to bleed them again. IDK, I can't think of a better spear to infuse with bleed besides going the round of the Halberds just for higher base damage.
Did you try Anri's Straight sword with poison? You're passively healing while the enemy is passively dying. Just keep refreshing the damage over time and backing off. Eventually, the opponent runs out of estus or tries to R1 spam. But Anri's straight sword has a very fast roll attack that lets you continue attacking as a combo that they can't roll out of until the third hit. Just R1 spam them right back and they'll take extra bleed damage along with the poison. To top it all off, Anri's straight sword has a hidden luck scaling bonus so you're not sacrificing raw damage in order to get the poison/bleed working.
John Doe it has it's redeeming qualities tho, c'mon don't be a downer about the bosses and the maps, I find dark souls 2 more enjoying than 3 and 1 (2>1>3) although it's my opinion so just ignore it.
Ds2 added onto what Ds1 did.. Ds3 just copy pasted what Ds1 did.. The Devs saw all the trolls mocking Ds2 and were like.. “let’s appease the trolls and remake Ds1 with a refillable magic meter, special attacks, twice the endings and lore that is so up the originals ass that it neither adds nor expands the story. Yeah.. Ds3 is good, but Ds2 was a better sequel and is only shit on cause Ds1 was so popular.
Bloodborne was meant to be part of the souls universe, but they scrubbed it of any direct references before release cause they were too scared of the trolls backlash on the lore update.
I've found that for PvP, dueling, undead arena and 'fight clubs' it's less than useful since the fights either end before the damage becomes relevant or people carry poison curing consumables. However for invasions (especially in lower level ranges) it's phenomenal, since having slightly more damage per hit usually doesn't mean much when the host has summons or is estus healing, however if you manage to poison them they usually do not have poison curing consumables and often will waste a lot of estus on the poison if not dying to it altogether because they ran out.
Dude, the way that you go about your explainations (the partizan and aquamarine videos come to mind) makes me wish that you made videos about most if not all weapons in SoulsBorne. Sub and bell, and likes on all videos. Keep it up!
I have a poison build named Swamp Thing. It's one of my favorite builds. Poison can be very annoying for invaders. And the Storyteller's Staff damn near takes half of Gael's health throughout the course of the fight.
I like how Jim actively mentions “if anyone is still playing this game”, but even after 7 years and Elden Ring release I still find relatively good activity on almost all sl ranges
I primarily use Poison when invading lowbies. They usually haven't picked up the 6 purchaseable Clumps in Firelink Shrine and don't have access to the Miracle yet. It's fun watching them panic when they've realized there's no cure.
Limit breakers did a thing, I'm not sure if this was before or after this video, but I've found the toxic/poison/pestilent and story teller's staff to be truly amazing area control. if they give you more than 20 feet, you're taking that 20 and then the 10 feet sides as well. you don't care or you're one of the sadists that use Pest Mist to stop entire fights from mixing past what you enjoy as an arena hazard. It's enjoyable in my opinion to just use two of these in my intelligence builds along with Heysel's and the crystal drakeblood. It makes for some always unpredictable fights
Poison and toxic are fun to use against high lvl enemies when you’re a very low level. I like throwing dookies at silver knights (while invisible) find a quiet spot and wait out the duration! :P When I first played Dark Souls 1, I used dookies against the very first black knight and...killed myself and him. I didn’t know it also affected you until it was too late. Added - Toxic and Poison are a great cheese tactic to use against the slave knight at the end. You just have to be good at dodging with landing a few hits for extra damage.
Poison is awesome, Hollow Ghru Spear and Sharp Ghru Curved Sword, just slap rotten resin on both and poison is inflicted in 3-4 hits. Ghru Sword is actually beast, a little short but hits hard. Pretty good in duels but I would not recommend for invasions. I miss DS2 poison, Sanctum Mace was the best, decent damage plus poison in one hit.
I remember killing quite a few players with poison arrows and knives when i did a projectile only playtrhough of DS2. They thought they could easily dodge my arrows but I managed to hit them by switching the timing of my attacks. Most players I faced panicked after being poisoned so, it was really easy to kill them afterwards.
So did I. It took over 30 minutes to do, but Simple Crystal (mana regen) combined with Storyteller's Staff (spews poison as weapon art) was very effective. Not to mention Toxic Mist on top of that.
In Demon’s Souls when I fought a turtle, I’d use the Makoto to apply bleed (which in des is a DoT) and then just kinda walk at them. Yeah, they can cure it. Just gotta lower their shield and stop back pedaling for a second. I have loved status effects ever since.
It is incredibly useful versus Slave Knight Gael. You get a few hits in to get the proc, then back off and let it eat away at his health as you ensure you ain't losing any of yours. I used that technique to get a low level run of that DLC. Also useful when you've got a build highly reliant on one type of damage that a boss is immune to.
P.S. Mistakes and Comments

TheGameconomist so would you be interested in a poison build now?
TheGameconomist
I'm waiting for someone to make an Omae Wa mo Shindeiru comp with poison builds
Wait a minute... It's Jim? God damnit Jim.
dark souls isnt dead. at all. Still quite active. i play dark souls 2 3 and bloodborne on ps4, all active. nice video.
Still, quite active.
@@murataln2128 dark souls 2 active on ps3 last i checked.
Slightly fan boying here, but can we just give it to software for being one of the top game developers when it comes to playing how you want?
I also loved your video, great info here
Dark souls 3 is not dead at all. It's my only current souls in 2024 and i'm enjoying it a lot. Great video!! Namaste.
Not to mention that poison is the perfect counter to tears of denial, which is an almost ubiquitous miracle in pvp
For a long time I’ve been strongly against poison. Now, you make me want to try an entire build of it. Awesome video mate.
"Don't misssss-t"
U sir, are going to hell for that pun.
EDIT: Toxic mist is very fun to use in Irithyll Dungeon! The tight corridors make it very effective! Try using the White Hair talisman with it for replenishment or even Tears of Denial.
Good shit jim
People: *say the game is dead*
Me: *gets invaded within 20 seconds of playing every single time*
Me: so that was a f***in lie!.
Sounds about right, even on xbox I get invaded constantly
I think you mean fortunately, Jim.
(Really enjoyed the video! Even though I haven't play this game, it was interesting to listen to)
if you are afraid for opening a chest or dont want fight the mimic just use the storyteller. He won't be aggressive towards you so you can sit back and watch him while he will be poisoned to death in his own chest
6:24 "blocking poison damage with rolls".... ow from software you never cease to impress me with ridiculous mechanic's
well you can roll the bleed and frostbite damage
I lol'd when the guy rolled off the Carthus bridge.
I once threw Emit Force at an Invader, and his reaction was to dodge it - By rolling off the bridge : D
Poison and Toxic was fun in DS2 / SOFTS.
I gave up using poison mist to poison in DS2. Instead now I use it to obscure the field in pvp.
poison is always so underrated...
I need more poison opportunities in games
The Dark soul never dies. Let the cycle continue.
I got into souls 3 last year. Thanks for doing all the hard work for me 🙏
Really well edited and put together video. I didn't know the story teller's staff was that decent
really enjoyed this video! also, the songs you used in it are really great, i specially loved the one at the end
i havent played ds3 yet, but in ds2 I used poison in pvp to force mistakes. Some people panic when poisoned.
In DS2 poison and its bigger brother, toxin were extremely effective. Poison arrows + boss = easy win if boss isn't immune. Few were.
Song at 0:52
Don't forget that Poison and Toxic are separate status effects, so you can stack them.
Or simply be ready for poison and have a moss ready. That always breaks the pressure
Great video! I will definitely consider a poison whip build.
Poison in DS3 is the Diaz Brother style--pressure--pressure--pressure.
Hello Jim.
Perfectly paced video!
Glad I saw the Twitter post :)
Keep it up!
One of the best videos on dark souls pvp 👌
The year is 20XX and youtube is dropping this in my recommendation
I started using the Rotten Pine Resin, just with my long sword at low level and it has changed how I see poison, thank you for the break down.
Remember how fromsoft gave us a giant sword with toxic damage in DS1? That was fun.
I never get tired of the music in these videos 👍🏼
you have the quality of a really popular youtuber gg nice vid ;)
Thank you so much :)
I loved bloodbourne but never got to play dark souls these games are awesome nothing else like them ! We need more
Did you try Anri's Straight sword with poison? You're passively healing while the enemy is passively dying. Just keep refreshing the damage over time and backing off. Eventually, the opponent runs out of estus or tries to R1 spam. But Anri's straight sword has a very fast roll attack that lets you continue attacking as a combo that they can't roll out of until the third hit. Just R1 spam them right back and they'll take extra bleed damage along with the poison. To top it all off, Anri's straight sword has a hidden luck scaling bonus so you're not sacrificing raw damage in order to get the poison/bleed working.
at 7:00 I almost reached for my controller to mash B , That menu caused some mild panic.
Dark Souls 2 had the best poison imo. You could kill bosses with it.
John Doe no it isn’t. Get the fuck out.
You’re the kind of person who follows any bandwagon as long as it gets you attention
Rekt
It lets me cheese geal so it’s S tear in my book
This inspired me to make a low level poison build, great vid btw!
I would love a sequel to this video in Elden Ring with its many status effects.
5:20 the13thCalamity...Looks like the Royal Rat Vanguard sent that one.
If only I knew your channel back in the days. Now I want to build a poison character who can cure other players's cancer.
7:10 The weapons are + what? i want to make this build but i dont know this information :/
We're still playing. Nice vid
imagine poison infusing a gru weapon upgraded it to toxic
wouldve been a cool mechanic
Aye lit video but ummm what the song at the end fam???
jou beats. - brasil.
I like how Jim actively mentions “if anyone is still playing this game”, but even after 7 years and Elden Ring release I still find relatively good activity on almost all sl ranges
Stupid question
Is this viable in 2020 DS3?
I don't even play dark souls and I found this incredibly interesting
also hi from twitter
Poison and toxic are fun to use against high lvl enemies when you’re a very low level. I like throwing dookies at silver knights (while invisible) find a quiet spot and wait out the duration! :P
When I first played Dark Souls 1, I used dookies against the very first black knight and...killed myself and him.
You could also throw poison and bleed onto two broken straight swords back on DkS2 and just go to town.
My friend got spooked when I hit him with the 99 luck bleed build
Its fun in LOWWWW level invasions (15ish) to whittle off estus before they can remove the effect.
Great video man! Need to do a poison build now!
Many thanks! I'm a fan of your videos! :D
Darksouls like Kings Field will never truly die.
I want you to know that this video made me subscribe. Your awful ways speak to me, this nightmare is beautiful.
Everytime I watch these clips something funny pops up. I'm not a dark souls player but i enjoy watching these clips.
Literally said 'Do it' as soon as palpy showed up on screen XD
Poison is what I used against Slave Knight Gael, that along with frost was how I beat him as a glass cannon sorcerer.
So did I. It took over 30 minutes to do, but Simple Crystal (mana regen) combined with Storyteller's Staff (spews poison as weapon art) was very effective. Not to mention Toxic Mist on top of that.
I love using my Machiavellian poison/bleed build, with the guru dagger and bandits knife it's really good at harassing hosts and their phantoms.
Great video, man. Just got DS3 and bout to boot it up. Preciate the info!~
You forgot to mention the one of the best use of poison, it completely counters tears of denial!
now i want to do a story teller staff run of ds3
Surprisingly interesting and instructive video!
In Demon’s Souls when I fought a turtle, I’d use the Makoto to apply bleed (which in des is a DoT) and then just kinda walk at them. Yeah, they can cure it. Just gotta lower their shield and stop back pedaling for a second. I have loved status effects ever since.
I had worked once using a poison build. He used the Astor spear and the gru sword and the poison whip.
Just watching these gems of videos you make again after spending a few hours fighting against the same 3 meta weapons for 2 hours
