  • In this video I talk to Vince about why he retired in Thailand and his average monthly expenses for both he and his wife. After listening to this interview, what are your thoughts? Can you afford to live in Thailand? Keep in mind, Vince is married, he does not go out on dates or party at the bars. He and his wife eat a mixture of both Thai and Western food and travels occasionally. They also own their SUV and motorbike and Vince has health insurance through the VA.

    Budget: Chiang Mai Thailand
    10,000 rent
    10,000 car payments
(I built a new home and bought a car, so this is what I was paying previous before the house was ready and I was fully retired and paid off the car)
    1,500 electricity
    15 days pick up street food for 2 @ 200B/day (3,000 Baht)
    15 days eat out 600B/day (9,000B)
    150 water
1400 (high speed 1GB Internet, TV, 2 smartphone unlimited data)
    3,000 gas
    4,000 household goods, misc
so about 52,060B/mth ($1,460 usd or $1,900 cad)
Visa is about 7000B per year (pay an agent to do the paper work ... ) plus bank feeds of a couple hundred baht for the account printout, and maybe 100B more for a current copy of the marriage certificate.
I always transfer at least 65,000B anyway, in case I need to switch to a retirement visa ... a marriage visa only has a 40,000B requirement
(I have a Wise money transfer account that I always keep several thousand CAD in and set a trigger to convert 2000 or so to Baht when it reaches what seems to me to be a decent exchange rate rather than waiting till the end of the month and take whatever it happens to be .... so at the end of the month if the rate is good I'll do a conversion and send that money, of if it's not a good rate at the end of the month I'll send the bahts that were already converted at a decent rate earlier in the month ... I figure I come out ahead 1 or 2 thousand baht per month that way rather than just waiting till the end of the month and take whatever the echange rate happens to be.

After my last divorce, I will be retiring with a pretty modest super and pension (Aussie dollars) and the fact is, Thailand will stretch my dollar further than Australia. That plus the culture and the people makes it a no-brainer for me. Weather is much the same as where I live in Northern Queensland so it won't be a big shock, although it rains more there, which I actually don't mind because everywhere is so green. I am single and don't do bars or night life. I don't eat much. I am happy to eat more Thai food but I still like a western bowl of cornflakes in the morning, not spicy food. I need air con at night. Don't mind the heat, but I need a reprieve at night. All in all, I think its going to fit me perfectly but as yet I haven't visited. Maiden voyage next year hopefully! Maybe see you and Gift in 2023, Joe.

I'm retiring later this year. I plan to be on a plane to Thailand by December. I enjoy videos like this, that discuss the costs of living in Thailand. My plan is to live in apartments in several cities for a couple months at a time to evaluate where I would want to buy a house. My budget is $125k for house, $50k for vehicle, then $1300 for monthly living expenses, to include the required health insurance.

Sounds pretty good. You can see my post above for details on my budget living in Chiang Mai (probably around the same budget you will pay unless you decide to live in a more expensive city like Bangkok, Pattaya, or maybe Phuket.)
Some additional expenses I didn't include in my original post:
      Garbage: 20B per month
Car insurance: I pay 13,000 Baht / year
Tax: Depends, if you have less than 1 rai (about 1/4 acre there are no taxes, if I recall correctly my wife's old 1 rai home in rural Thailand was less than 100 Baht per year, and I think her small farm land of about 8 rai was 300 baht)
Visa Agent: for the original marriage visa application they charged 26,000 Baht (included all immigration fees as well) then 7000B for annual renewals (also included all fees)
Merit: About once or twice a month I go with my Thai wife to perform 'merit' some good deed which is either bringing food to the monks at the temple or buying live animals (fish, reptiles, birds) and releasing them. That's probably 500 to 1000B per month, but not necessary unless you have a Thai wife ;-)
Home Insurance: not sure since the house came with 2 years pre-paid and haven't had to go searching yet, but I imagine it's not much more than car insurance!
Generally though the owning a home & car with a income of $1300 usd per month will be plenty, depending on how this whole East/West sanctioning and inflation thing works out.

Thanks for another interesting video. In comparison, our life here in the Shenandoah Valley is very inexpensive in consideration of; home is paid for, taxes here are very low, utilities are reasonable, and food (away from the cities) is less expensive. Our "base" expense is no more than $2000/month at best which includes 1 car payment. Of course we spend more on school, projects, hobbies, dining out, charities, travel, etc..

I live in Thailand on 600 CAD per month. Luxury condo with infinity pool view of the ocean, another pool with a view of the mountains. Ocean view big modern gym. Basically a condo paradise.
To live in Thailand I bought the elite visa which works out to 150$ a month over 20 years, so the real living cost is 750 CAD a month if you include the visa.
I live what I personally feel is an upper middle class life. Love it (:

I would advice anyone who wants to come live here is to come and live on your realistic budget for 6 months before taking the leap. The cost-of-living & beauty are not in question, but it is a certain type of person who can adapt for a long term lifestyle here in Asia. Don't make the mistake of equating your Phuket/Pattaya resort holiday to a life in Thailand.

Thank you again for sharing your life with us. Sorry to appear ignorant but what is the DOD? Just to say that living in Thailand is easy and cheap, probably cheaper up here in Isaan than in the south or any tourist areas. I agree with Vince, we have a great and easy lifestyle. On a retirement visa, you only have to show that you have a minimum income from overseas of 65,000 THB a month transferred into your Thai bank account, or 40,000 if on marriage visa. Don't as me why being married is cheaper, as Thailand isn't noted for it's logic. Just go with the flow and as Thailand is so much cheaper than UK you will find that your pension will go so much further. God bless you and safe travels for Gift to Bangkok. 🙂🙏

I got married in Chiang Mai .... the hard parts were:
Getting a death certificate for my late wife from Canada, just because of the address issue (1st attempt the English version could not be deliverd so I had to have the Thai language version taped to the envolope.)
Finding the right office (you need to go to one that is in the district your Thai wife is registered in her Yellow Book House Registery. (she had 3 houses in other areas and we were renting near Chiang Mai)
When we went the first time the manager who needed to sign the documents was down in Bangkok for some Royal ceremony and would not be back for a month.
Basically though it was bring my Passport, proof of marraige status (tax form declared as 'single' and death certificate of late wife ) to the Canadian Embassy where they gave me a letter verifying I was allowed to marry.
Went to the regional office where they checked all the documents and told us to come back tomorrow.
Went back the next day and got the marriage certificae ... so basically if you do a little preparing, the part where you obtaine the marriage certificate is a breeze.

Hi, Gift and I meet up with our subscribers whenever possible. Giving our lifestyle traveling Thailand, it’s best to contact us a week in advance to ensure that we are available to meet up. We live in Mueang Prachuap Khiri Khan, about 4 hours south of Bangkok.
