I have been coming to Thailand for about 30 years and spend quite alot of time there so know what its like; can speak and read Thai, etc. If you are new to Thailand or Phillipines or anywhere else cheap and good for retirement then the best advise I could give is don't rush into anything, don't commit or over commit to anything and certainly don't spend alot of money on anything until you know where you are at and are sure you want to stay long term. At a minimum give it a couple of years before making any big investment (money, relationship, commitment, etc). If it does not work out, and you followed what I suggested, then its easy to move on and try something else. We have a house in a village near KK and its Issan and we built the house about 15 years ago.

So, IME, the Isan Region is mostly a lower cost area of Thailand. So, here, about $1,000US/ mo. Would be very tight but do/able, and $1,400 would be tight but fairly easy to live well on , and $1,800 would be comfortable. At about $2,700/ month you are wealthy here. All of this assumes a reasonable additional savings of $100,000 - $250,000 US for necessary big purchases like car, furniture, etc as per your requirements. This also assumes you’re helping in some small way a Thai woman for companionship.

You're mostly right about many farangs here running away from something. Hence the farang genepool to pick some friends from is limited .
I live in Chiang mai, just bought a home we are currently moving into . The welcome by Thai neighbours is unbelievable .
Yesterday axrerired Thai guy came over ,very helpful with garden equipment, invited me to his home, gave me a tour of his house, every nook and cranny, very open in terms of personal info and was the same with a retired lady down the street . I came across a number of business people we're buying household items who spoke English ,very fair prices and also very open about personal infos, familyvetc.
Even about Thai politics. I think the Lanna culture up here, as you said also different, and the place is very organised ,good townplanning, roads and absolutely wonderful temples unique even in Thailand . I never experienced any scams here. This is my Shangri-La. Only one draw back is 3 months of the burning season with pollution. Even the expats are better types than down south .
It's a culrured and artistic city with museums. Even a Museum of Contemporary Art. Beat that! They established that among hundreds of years of Lanna culture .
About time women ,other than scammers.. yep, impossible to go back to Western women. Thai women still maintained their femininity while many Western women became ballbusters. Excuse the generalisation.

Been to Koh Samui many times. Can’t say it’s another Pattaya. Not sure where you heard that. It may have a red light area or two but it’s definitely not in your face there. I’d even consider living there. You hear a lot about the Full Moon parties but those don’t even really take place on Koh Samui, but on Koh Pha Ngan and not very frequent. I would say Phuket in Patong is a bit more like Pattaya. Though Pattaya is in a league all it’s own when it comes to the seedy side of Thailand. If you want to head up north then go really far up north and check out Nan! Beautiful area! Heading to Da Nang for a vacation in a few weeks! First time visiting there.

But in 3 years ive knuckle down, taken huge risks with speculative trading on start up companies (in lithium lol) and ive not only restored my wealth but im set for huge growth next ten years. Stylistically, I'd prefer to "retire" in Jomtien than up North- because I'm not married, it's closer to beach, closer to Bangkok's main airport, and I'm not purchasing a home. Hua Hin would be 2nd. Re- the nonviolence, from what I sense fr. overcharging & general energy, the tourist area tuk tuk drivers and taxi guys (males, non-Grab/Bolt) seem as if they would throw hands @ the drop of a hat (or dispute of a fare w/ farang). But the country is exponentially safer than the U..S. Even in a relationship, I can't see myself living in Issan. But Bangkok is too large f/ me- I prefer a convenient middle. I have been living off and on in Thailand for 56 years and the most amazing thing I have seen was the stupidest things I have seen my fellow foreigner do with it came to Thai woman. To put it into a nutshell they would do for a Thai woman what they would have never dreamed of doing the same thing for a woman from their own country. Most common things is marry a Thai girl and paying a crazy dowry and in many cases the Thai bride came with 3 or 4 kids from her previous Thai husbands or boyfriends.
Then the second thing I often see it the family moving into the home of the foreigner and he is supporting them, now how often in America or Europe have you seen a man take in and support a wife and her family. Even a mother-in-law moving in is frowned on. Buying the brides family cars, motorcycles, loaning money to the brides family knowing it will never be paid back and one of my favorites taking the family out on the insistence of the bride to your birthday dinner at at expensive restaurant and having to pay the bill and not even a birthday card, but when it is the brides relative's birthday you are expected to pay for the dinner and provide a expensive gift (or money that is preferred)
In other words if you marry a Thai woman expect the brides family to be included for the life of the marriage.
My advise is if you come to Thailand make sure you have plenty of money. don't expect that you are going to live like a king on your Social Security. Yes you can survive but you can survive in your home country. But also keep in mind that with the American economy on the verge of collapse your pension or Social Security may also collapse, better buy a one way open airline ticket back to your home country just in case being in Thailand without money is not a good thing..
So you have money, you saved and have a lot of cash, great, I did too. First I did not even get a Thai girlfriend, I rented a nice house and I hired a maid. Made sure that the maid was ugly and married already just incase I got drunk and did something stupid (I didn't). The maid kept my house cleaned, washed my clothes, and did a lot of my shopping for me since she got a better price for things.
For companionship I did the bar scene picked up women here and there once I learned where they were at and learned what to pay. And believe me these girls cost me far less than a Thai wife would.
If you survive being single for a couple of years and then get married to a Thai girl, after a year or so add up your expenses are after a year and then what were your expenses were before you got married you might be in for shock.
My strongest advise is to pay attention to how Thai men treat their wives you might learn a thing or two.
ceremony but did not get a marriage license. You can do that too.
Now if you really are getting tired of the bar scene and want to settle down with a nice Thai girl that is educated you might look into teaching English. For some reason the best marriages that I have seen in Thailand have been the man teaching English and his wife as a student. Usually these girls are well educated and want to improve their skills for a better job.
