    Now I wanna write up a Hyborean Age Deep One hybrid who hasn’t yet made it to the second stage of his evolution and has made it his mission to resist it, via his use of this nifty field of science he “invented” and is “pioneering”. In his use of Elder Magic, he’s not even accelerating his metamorphosis, simply deluding himself into believing that he’s stopping it. A dangerous person to face, he’s growing increasingly delusional, which’ll only develop into a psychosis that’ll leave him pleasant to be around, when compared to other Deep Ones.

    I have the impression that if you put together all the lore videos you have on ghouls, vampires, ape men, serpent men, bull men, dragons, deep ones, Acheron, the gods of the hyborian age, and the different magic systems in Conan lore, it could become a book similar to the Necronomicon or the book of Skelos. What I've always loved about the deep ones and the great old ones is Lovecraft was fairly early in science fiction/weird fiction to give us fairly complex aliens that pre-date the UFO craze.
    I don't know if you've ever read "The Doom that came to Sarnath", it reads like a historical sword and sorcery lore book, but the underlying theme is the fish people are aliens that peacefully set up a colony and it's the humans that behave like savages assaulting their city and desecrate their God. In kind of a role reversal.
    And Howard runs with this theme that the deep ones have that science fiction quality to them within his fantasy/sword and sorcery setting.

      @@alack3879 Thanks! It's put my life upside down this time arround, feels like a fever, like the world already exists at the back of my mind and is just pushing to the front.
      Anyways I'm getting some of my inspiration from some theoretical proto-indo-european myths, trying to squeeze in Howardian and Lovecraftian tones where I can. I've definitely been affected by Elden Ring and super duper affected by the works of Steven Erikson (whom I must recommend wherever I go, he's gonna quietly cause a revolution in fantasy almost to the same caliber of Tolkien, Mieville or Morrisson).
      But mostly I just wanted to create a world based on an original creation myth(truth) that combines the unknowability of Lovecraft with some overall darker tones and now that myth is put down solid, I'm just letting the world development pull me along. It's an almost psychedelic journey at times.

      @@Washeek
      That's awesome
      Mine is set in kind of an earth-like world where civilization has risen to incredible heights and collapsed repeatedly due to alchemy destabilizing society and mutating people.
      A major focus of my creativity has been on adapting concepts and events from the colonial and industrial eras with a critical historical lens.
      In example the "Enlightenment" was more some nobles coming to the realization that the legends of the earlier times might be more than just stories. From there they discovered myriad ways of improving life by raiding tombs and ruins to translate whatever they could find.
      Interestingly the earlier tombs from these golden ages seem to be the best preserved, thus the more advanced discoveries of the ancients were much more difficult to translate.
      Whilst this world was low fantasy before this revolution in science through alchemy and politicing the kingdom of these nobles grew exceedingly wealthy, and despite schism in thought the idea of death became a rarity due to wondrous mixtures commonly available.
      Through a combination of bioweapons deployed in colonial wars and the imbalanced humors of a population drunk on excess only supported by technologically advancing colonial states, the empire cracked, and with it came the fall.
      The players find themselves adrift in a broken paradise, likely entering the streets of the capital of the empire in search of that once so common cure to so many ailments, but finding themselves trapped in a web of political machinations, biological horrors, and good old madness.
      A number of things about the setting i liked was the addition of historical oddities as canonical fact.
      In example mummy powder was a common cure all because it actually worked, since the dessicated remains of the Ancients are quite loaded with alchemical agents.
      Another is the names of Deities always ending with "I Am" such as Liam, Priam, Ephriam, and Calliam. This being a reference to Exodus when God said "I Am that I Am"
      It was a setting initially made for a one shot and has grown into its own beast. Rather fitting i think.
      Thank you for sharing

    • @Washeek
      @Washeek ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@alack3879 That' quite involved and dare I say inspired. Making half-obscure references to things like real-life alchemy and Torah seem to be a recipe for success, because it ignites sparks in people's brains.
      I tend to escape when I work with fiction, so couldn't go for such a "civilized" setup. I was inspired by Grimdark's videos on Conan to go more for an exploration aspect. And also having a world where I can do anachronisms and isolated nations and still have them have a common tongue and other conveniences. So now I've got a solid framework, with an interesting backstory (currently gearing up to write several false mythical versions of the original creation events to also help illustrate the major modern societies) that just goes on to inform little pieces I or the players want to put in. Also left myself quite a lot of space for players (even more than one group) to creatively explore and flesh out themselves. But also I can just throw in things I fancy without the whole thing loosing cohesion, so I went for some subverted elves trope, made humanity truly diverse to the point that different tribes of humans feel more like whole fantasy races, added some horrors into the sea and giants into the mountains and deserts and lots of truly primitive cultures dotted throughout the land. So I can have these clashes between presumed primitives and more organized, civilized nations and make it a central theme with their cultures, values and mythos coming into conflict as well. Interested to see how any player group will tip these scales.

    what do you think the Deep Ones think of Yog-Sothoth? On one hand, he is an ancestor, but on the other hand, he's somewhat... Open to giving knowledge to mortals. That seems to go against their first oath.

    • @GrimDarkHalfOff
      @GrimDarkHalfOff  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A very good question, I would argue they would view him a Titan-like figure as an outer god. Effectively being a creature that is older and stronger than their creator, but in this context being morally neutral and an aspect of the challenges of life. His value of knowledge would make him a good possible god for any deep one struggling with identity.

    I think being a deep one would be highly desirable in the conan/h.p Lovecraft universe. Not much conflict(for the most part),an almost invincible body and great genetics,great community,many riches,seafood diet(the greek diet),worshipping based powerful deities(with the benefit of not going crazy). Sure I'd shit myself if I was turning into a fish too but getting to screw a bunch of woman and passing the puffer fish around like dolphins do would make my cares go away

    The Elder thing great old one war wasn't a civil war at least not as it's presented in At the Mountians of Madness.
    Elder things came to earth first seeded it with life and terraformed it in the precambrian.
    Cuthulu and the star Spawn came latter and were invaders that decimated the thriving Elder thing civilization before being beaten back.
    Unlike great old ones the Elder things are also presented as an analog for humans not an unknowable alien lifeform but the end point and full potential of what a science based civilization like humans could achieve and how in the face of the endless march of time and endless expanse of the universe it doesn't matter.

  • @JoeMartinez18

    There is one thing I never understood with those elderbeings... Why such a hatred towards humanity? They need humans for reproduction and sacrifices
