  • Nick very kindly bought me these two books, yay! They are Color Mixing Recipes by William Powell. These two each have 450 colour combinations, but there is also an omnibus book as well with watercolour, oil and acrylics combined, and 1500 colour mixing recipes. I will list them all below!
    There seems to be a few different editions, so I have listed the ones I have, but they might be slightly different depending where you are.

    As a lovely viewer has kindly pointed out (and I was clearly "asleep at the wheel" when I filmed this), the oil paint I used is Viridian Hue, not actual Viridian, so no wonder the colour mix is different! Sadly YT doesn't allow re-uploads for edits, and I'd have to delete the whole video and republish it, and erm....no, lol. So I'll have to live with it! 😂 Note to all: mixing Viridian Hue results in a slightly different mix to the one in the book. Bear this in mind when making your cabbage-y colours, heheh.

    OMG Such a complicated way to mix colors....I learnt the old school way ie learn the color wheel and how to color match...For beginners perhaps do a color grid of the color wheel or all your paints that will get you in the ball park so to speek then look to see if its to light /dark, to blue to green or what ever then adjust with complimentary if needed or add subtract the harmony if needed ie for highlights low lights , thin or dilute for intensity. These books remind me of those old complicated cook books which made cooking a headache. lol A Burnard King of the paint world...Was an interesting video Thanks. Love painting flesh tones in oils not as hard as you may think.

      Haha yes anything with numbers is always difficult for me, as I am not mathematically minded at all. It took me a ridiculously long time to figure out how to explain the watercolour sheet! 🤣

    Hmm... thank goodness I saw this video before buying this book. You saved me time and money - thank you! The idea of mixing on these plastic sheets honestly makes no sense. Back to the reliable method of trial, error and learning by practice, I guess.

      Haha yes, I think in this case the idea was better than the outcome. I made such a mess with the plastic sheets! 😂

    Okay, so I’m no good at color mixing with paints and these books seem like they’re made for me😂 brownie points for Nick! the colors in the cabbage were fun regardless of what happened with the Viridian😂

      Luckily for me I have a husband who supports my obsession, lmao! The books are fun to use as long as one doesn't get hung up on matching the swatches exactly, and use them more as a "guide". ☺️

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@artbydrbee Oil paints are actually pretty forgiving because they can be layered, they take ages to dry and mistakes can be fixed easily, lol. I think my painting will take a solid few months to fully dry. Most info I have read is to not paint sealer over oil paintings until a year later if possible! 😂

    I am so glad, that you did this review because I saw these books in another video last week and almost bought them. Now I know they are not really for me. It even stresses me out when I have to follow a tutorial, let alone to mix 10% of this colour with 35% of that colour. I rather mix until I get it right.
    I think it would have been helpful to let us know the pigment numbers instead of the paint names.
    But as always thumbs up for a imformative but also entertaining video!

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, in hindsight the pigment numbers would be really great to know! I am the same in that I just mix by eye and don't "do numbers", but I like the books for their pretty colour swatches. 😁

    impulse buys are dangerous when artist's are involved lol (ok you didnt buy these but it still applies 😝) colour mixing books can be pretty handy when you need help with colours and not too mention looking at all that colour is relaxing 😀

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's because my paint is Viridian Hue and not actually Viridian and of course I didn't think to say that and how I wish I could edit the video to put that bit in, LOL!

  • @MirandaWatsonArt
    @MirandaWatsonArt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, these books sure are cool! I can see how the watercolor one might be more useful than the acrylic and oil one, because how much paint *exactly* are you supposed to squeeze out for those? Right? Anyway, fun video and the Viridian mix-up is absolutely no big deal. Most serious people will read your pinned comment, so all should be good. Thanks for another fun video, Becky!

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha yes the watercolour mixing sheet was a lot easier to use! I just figured I'd pin a comment since I had made a few errors that ideally I'd fix if I hadn't gone and edited/uploaded everything already. Meh, no big deal...I tell myself...😂

  • @LindsayKitson

    Great video. I suspect the reason you're getting unpredictable results is your "viridian" is probably really phthalo green blue shade - PG7, and not genuine viridian - PG18. Phthalo green is often labelled viridian or viridian hue, so it can lead to confusion, and people buying paint that turns out to be not what they were expecting. Phthalo green blue shade has way more tinting strength than genuine viridian, so you couldn't replace it 1 for 1 in a colour mixing recipe and expect the same colour to come out. I'm disappointed to see those colour lists didn't include pigment numbers so that you can make sure you're actually getting the colour that's going to give you the textbook results. The other thing that will introduce variablity in results is when paints have white already added to them, which would mess up your ratios in the colour recipes, so something like this is probably a great learning tool, but could potentially be frustrating for novice artists, when they follow instructions to the letter and the instructions don't work.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course, it was Viridian Hue! 😂
      Ahh, how I wish I could do a second take on that one, lol. Thanks for pointing it out because I'd completely missed that while doing the experiment. I generally only have student grade oils because it's not something I do a lot of, in order to invest in pro level paints. Haha oops! 😁

    • @LindsayKitson
      @LindsayKitson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BeckyTregear that's okay, lol, but that totally goes to show the limitations of those colour recipes; a novice painter would probably have no idea there was a difference between viridian and viridian hue. I have the same georgian set, but in water mixable oils, so I figured the pigments used would probably be the same :P I'm still just a beginner with oils too :D

      Yes it was! Watching this reminds me of the frustration I went through with a colour mixing book when I was a beginner. I had student grade colours and I remember my mixes never turning out quite right, and then not really understanding how to fix them.

    • @LindsayKitson
      @LindsayKitson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chaosinca I bet; and the vast majority of the book's target audience will be beginners with beginner starter sets, and not this list of the most expensive pigments on the market that the author could decide beginners need to work with :P
