A couple of days ago I did a painting using a cool red, a cool blue and a cool yelllow. Unsurprisingly it looked like a landscape on a really cold day, with a cold looking sky and cold road. But then I added shadows and everything changed. Suddenly the sun was shining and it was a very hot day. I mention it here because it reminded me of how I read in that Jeanne Dobie book that shadows have cool colours on hot days and hot colours on cold days. It was those shadows in cool colours that warmed up the painting even though the whole painting was in cool colours. I need to go back and read the rest of that book again.

With some 25 years of watercolor experience, Jeanne Dobie's book is still my first 'go to' book on color theory, i also have Quiller's earlier book "painter's guide to color'- excellent book, and Leland is also renown for color theory. These three books are totally good choices , Teoh, well done video.

You can get a printed edition of Jan Hart's book, it's just used and the price will be a bit inflated, but if you really don't want to feel confined by a digital PDF it's still possible to get the print version. I know this because I immediately went to check out her book - I'm just blown away by the gorgeous color. Thanks for sharing your favorites. I have Making Color Sing, too. I need to dive back into it.

Thanks Teoh - a great video. I have the Jeanne Dobie book and it's jaw droopingly good. Quiller is on my wishlist and I'm glad to hear it complements Jeanne's book. As an alternative to the Jan Hart and Nita Leland books, though, I'd recommend Hazel Soan's watercolour rainbow but only for people that use Winsor & Newton watercolours - I found that book to be a lifechanger.

I have the Exploring Color Workshop book, in my oppinion a realy instructive book. I also like the Book, Color and Light from James Gurney, it is similar but deals more with lighting situations. Artwork and TH-cam Turorials about Gouache from James Gurney are also great. When you showed the last book (Urban Sketching) i had to think of your work, its realy simular, i like this style.

I have the Quiller book, and I think it's fine for beginners who are already artists in some other area. I wish I had it in the beginning. It would have saved me a lot of strife in buying the right colours.

Thank you very much for the great review, Teoh. For me, these books seem a bit too extensive right now. I'm eyeing A Field Guide to Color, it sounds like a more manageable and hands-on introduction. Has anyone used this book? If so, were you happy with it?

    - Bridgerton by Julia Quinn
    - The Joy of Art by Carolyn Schram
    - Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson

I was given a gift book on color theory for dummies. Though my background is more scientific and the programming and coding of color blending on hex RGB and CMYK models is more my thing I do know pigment mixing or RYB aswell.
I am not very good at art(s) as in painting and drawing but still the book didn't cover some things enough. For one thing different shades of blacks Gray's and whites were covered and mentioned as a means for blending and changing colors. Brown was given little reference. Grays and browns neutralize certain colors and prevent them from being too harsh on the eyes. I heard of tint tone and shade. But what is browning a color called? Grays make cleaner fresher tones and browns do make warmer dirtier and murkier colors but they are a neutralizer aswell as gray. Pink though a tint of red purple and sometimes orange or anything containing red got little reference. Brown was also not mentioned as a shade of the red orange yellow green family and shades of it were not shown a lot in that edition

I read in the comments how good Jeanne Dobbie's book is. But the paintings in it look miserable. Is the text worth it? How does it compare to James Gurney's 'Color and Light'.
