Art Studio Tidy Up Ep 3: Ugly Storage Box Makeovers!

- The tidy up and declutter of my messy art studio continues! In today's episode, I did some makeovers of some really ugly storage boxes that I didn't want to throw out, but they were too hideous to be on display. I used some cheap solutions to upcycle my existing furniture, and now they look a lot better! Watch to see what I did to fix these up.

Fluffy britches made me laugh. Lost track of how many times my furry helper has walked on my paint pallet or sat on my wet painting. Nice job Becky!

Haha yes I was quite surprised at myself for not losing my temper with the vinyl! 😂 It was a lot easier than I expected, but quite time consuming so it took me a number of separate days to cover everything. I had to take breaks, lol.
This is my kind of studio. I love eclectic. My studio is all thrift store, yard sale and side of the road finds. ❤

Love the makeover!! Them shelves looked awesome with all the handmade items on it, we don't get things like that around here, I'd love to just walk down the road picking things up to recycle!! Them vinyl shelves really worked out a treat! Great video! :D
Thank you! I'm still thinking the black shelves need something on the back to hide the flaws in the paint, but it's ok for now. For some reason in our neighbourhood, people frequently chuck out good pieces of furniture and other treasures. I find things on a regular basis, which is partly why my studio's so cluttered, lol! 😂
I adore the vintage wooden tool chest. It's a gem! My studio is mostly made up of vintage wooden desks, cabinets and tables. Your studio is lovely.
Thank you! I love vintage furniture. We found the tool chest at a vintage market quite a few years ago; it was all scuffed and sad looking, so Nick sanded it back and we painted varnish on it and it looks so beautiful now!

@@Chris-wn6sc We fixed it up; it was very shabby and scuffed when we first found it in an antique store, but with sanding and varnish she looks wonderful again!
That vintage tool chest is awesome. My studio is a mish-mash of new and old, and most of it is repurposed. Only my drawing table and office desk were purchased for the specific purposes. My drawing table was a gift from my hubby some years ago, and my desk was to replace this hand-me-down, GIANT desk and credenza that equaled in weight to a large elephant. Well, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but not by much! I had to literally break it apart to get it out of the house (the movers put it there for me on the second floor). Man I hated that thing. Oh, another thing that is awesome are those vinyl rolls for $2 each! Those were quite pretty and I liked how your pieces turned out. Well done!
@@TracieWho Thank you! Ah, the adventures with large and awkward furniture. We had an old upright piano which we sold to a dealer, and the drama getting that thing out of the house...thankfully they had all the right gear to move it but it was still really difficult! 😂
@@BeckyTregear I take it no large hammers were used to move the piano...haha....large hammers can be quite a satisfying tool against a hated piece of furniture. 🤣

All my furniture is secondhand but I have a horror of bedbugs so I am verrrry careful. I love old-fashioned wood. Your studio is so relatable I love it.
@@riverAmazonNZ I think when it comes to a bed, I'm going new all the way, but everything else can be second hand and mismatched. 😄

It's funny that I bought those 3 drawer bamboo units from Kmart too because I couldn't find those plastic ones you put your markers in. I bought 4 of the 2 drawer units and they hold pens, pencils and leads, 3 different sized half pans, all my different sized bulldog clips, business cards, tools and computer cables and flash drives/storage drives. Also with a spare drawer for later use. I also bought the wider, lower 2 drawer ones too, they can hold A4 sized stuff. I bought 3 of the 2 drawer units and they hold my watercolor tubes, gouache tubes, washi tapes, watercolor sticks and empty palettes, with one drawer spare for future expansion. I haven't decorated mine, I just put printed labels on the drawers so I can find things. I thought I might paint images of the drawer contents and stick that on the front instead of the labels eventually. I'm still waiting for hubby to build my shelf unit to put these all on. I'm hoping he might also make a paper storage shelf and a box for my big acrylic paint tubes sometime in the future.
@@zenlife1200 They're really handy little drawer units! They're also half the price of the ones in Officeworks, lol. I've never seen those marker drawer units again; we had another look in TKMaxx and they were all gone. A one-off find, it seems! Sounds like you've made great use of your units and painting on them is a great idea. 😊

I like Betsy (?) The Telefone and her silver friend 🙂 Using the vinyl is a great idea. It doesn't have to look perfect, it's not made in a factory but you personalized it.

Loved your vinyl up cycling of the storage units, it looks really nice. I also love upcycling things, I’ve done a few small storage I got in charity shops. Super fun!

With the hard rubbish, anything still in good shape, gets sold in the council's tip store I believe. It doesn't get destroyed or put into landfill. The money the store makes goes to the community. In saying all that, anything that's actually still in the pile by Monday's is usually trash anyway. All the good stuff is already taken. I literally have to do my hard rubbish today.
@@lozantoninocreations The truck that comes around our streets crushes stuff up. We put a coffee table out once, thinking it would go somewhere like you mentioned, and they crushed it to smithereens while I stood there watching! 😱

Beautiful Becky up hear in Townsville we have the same thing with council kerbside pick up.. it’s a good idea as we gotta pay to dump rubbish and stuff at the dump but green waste is free as they turn it into wood chip for gardens thank you for sharing ❤❤❤😊😊😊xxx
@@kyliescolouringindownunder3098 Yes, same here. We get two free hard rubbish pickups a year, which have to be booked in our suburb, so someone always has rubbish out, lol.

I’m in awe of your spray painting ability. I have a small cupboard about the same size as your shelves and I am on can three of spray paint. I am absolutely horrible at it.
I love the idea of finding and up cycling furniture and stuff but i learned i dont have the patience for it. Or energy or focus. That small cupboard i mentioned, i started in may and am still maybe halfway done. I am better at shopping for the items needed to upgrade the stuff… just not the actual work.
@@lisagoetsch I hate spray painting so much! 😂 My first attempts on other items were terrible, so I've improved a bit since then but I'll never enjoy it. The stench! 🤢

you are doing such a fantastic job Becky it is brillo .lovely ....you made me laugh about buying more.....just like me hahahahah my man brought me the full set of Prismacolor pencils 150 set on Saturday (yesterday) I am blown way and very happy hahahha. Happy swatching
Oh I just replied late to your other question, and now I release you have the Prismacolor set, lol! 😂 To follow up, I think you'll be happy with them and yay for your man buying them! I'd recommend the Dahle 133 sharpener (off Amazon) for sharpening them, as it has rubber grips and doesn't destroy pencils like other hand crank sharpeners often do.
@@BeckyTregear had a Green Dahle 133 sharpener and it broke ...the crank arm fell out and wouldn't fit in the holder any more …..use a KUM Bullet Brass one. going to order a 2 hole KUM hand one I have a Pritty saucer for it ( got in charity shop) hahahahahahahahah

I have no idea what's in it, haha! But it's used to clean walls before painting them, and it takes off dirt and oils to have a clean surface. Found in hardware stores. 😄
