- Come along as we look at 1500 Color Mixing Recipes for Oil, Acrylic and Watercolor by William F. Powell. Its a fabulous book and one any artist will find of value because these mixes can extend to other mediums as well.
Oh and within the video, I referenced Art Sherpa, who recently streamed a short video on Value Studies. I think it will help until we take a good look at those and how learn how to take a black and white photo and compare that grey scale image to our colour pigment mixes. Here's the video:

Oh I'm so glad the review was of help, Keni !!! I love that book as it covers all the mediums. On my website blog of last week, I have links to the watercolour pigment charts on the major brands to help connect yours to the charts within the book.

Anyone who gets this book, I wan to remind you in the book it says the names may be different for some of the colors. Additionally, I'd like to share that what I did was look up the paints number. So PV19, then I'll look up the color with that information. Its worth it. She's completely right to google the colors. It's helped me to understand colors better.
I own the `Color Mixing Recipes For Portraits', `Color Mixing Recipes For Oils and Acrylics' and` Color Mixing Recipes For Landscapes' and have found them to be fantastic in terms of helping me with better understanding basic color mixes and incorporating them into my acrylic portraits. Having these books at my fingertips makes me wonder how I ever got by without them.

Thanks for the terrific review. I'm trying to figure out if I would be able to use this guide with Golden high flow paints that would not work well with the color mixing grids as the points are just like liquid. Thanks again
Thank you Jamie. While the book doesn’t include that specific brand of paint, the colour theory and mixing principles would also apply to that acrylic paint as well.

Thank your for the great review! Do you know how this compares to the Color Mixing Bible by Ian Sidaway. Have been eying both books and would love to know which one you recommend. Does this book also show what the individual single pigments look like instead of only the mixes?
I only use acrylics and oils, so would it make more sense to go with Color Mixing Recipes for Oil & Acrylic?
EDIT: From what I understand, this book (1500 Color Mixing Recipes for Oil, Acrylic and Watercolor) is a combination of all the smaller books, correct?
Hello Wijkert! First, no, this book doesn’t show the individual pigments as they don’t, or shouldn’t, change across the mediums. It does, however, at the very back, show a conversion chart of base colours between oil and acrylic such as in oil, cerulean blue hue doesn’t have an exact acrylic equivalent so it would require one mesasure of cerulean blue with one speck of phthalo blue.
Now, having said that, I know for a fact that in watercolour, some of the base pigments can and do look very different. 🤷🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
Each manufacturer has its own colour chart on their website, so do take a look at the ones I’ve linked, ok? (Hopefully those still work - it’s been a while.)
I took a look at the book you referred to and oh my goodness that’s a pretty extensive and all inclusive mixing guide. I’m going to get one as I also work in gouache and colour pencil! ❤️

I bought this book a few days ago, and found some of the colour names a bit confusing. I goggled for equivalent names under different brands, but became more confused and overwhelmed by the details. Is there a chart to show the names used by different manufacturers for the same colour?
Professional Watercolours (and professional oils) will have pigment info (PY, PR etc.) listed which you can get by googling each manufacturer’s charts for that info.

@@hc-fo4et There again, it depends on the professional brand. Google your manufacturer's brand of acrylic and specifically ask for pigment information.
