TOP 5 Deck building MISTAKES, and how to avoid them | TCG 101 | Genshin Impact TCG

  • Welcome to the TCG-101 series - the best way to become a better duelist with lessons in under 10 minutes.
Deck building is one of the hardest skills to learn in almost any TCG - even harder than playing the game well - and why you'll so often see people copying and playing meta decks. While copying a decklist online is great if your only goal is to win, our goal here at Invokation Akademy is to help you play TCG YOUR way - which means with YOUR own decks!
Unfortunately deckbuilding as a general concept is way too hard to teach as a single lesson - so instead, I'll take you through the top 5 most common mistakes I see from newer players who post decklists and ask for advice. By avoiding these common traps, you can quickly and drastically improve the quality of any deck you build!
For in depth deckbuilding, we're going to need individual lessons covering each archetype, as different decks demand different strategies - so keep an eye out for that!

I've always said that if you want to be a competitive player you'll only get so far by "net decking" and you should actually understand how the deck building process works.
Mess around and build "bad" decks as they'll force to you analyse what makes the deck work within it's archetype.
Building bad decks will also force you into making unorthodox plays which can help you gain more practice for those types of descions in real matches.
    Absolutely great video btw!
Talking about deck building is one of my passions because you can go so deep down the rabbit hole

    • @blepthecat

Definitely a good point! Practice with a good list gets you a long way, but the best players that can build as well can stay ahead of the meta much easier which is definitely an advantage

as a newbie, i was actually very surprised when i first saw that normally, people would play 2 of each card rather than take all 30 different cards. As i got into the game more tho, i could understand why haha.

The biggest problem for me when it comes to deck building is not that idk what am i suppose to do, but rather how am i suppose to do it. I watched a quick guide to deck building (for any card game but mostly hearthstone) by Funki Monki back when GI TCG first came out, and he break it down into 8 palatable steps.
    1. Idea (what mechanics you want to base your deck around)
    2. Win condition (best way to implement those mechanics)
    3. Synergy (best cards to achieve win condition)
    4. Draws (add cards to your hand)
    5. Removals (remove threats)
    6. Balance (balancing costs to ensure maximum use of resources)
    7. Go through collection (see what can better replace cards in the deck)
    8. Play test
However, i couldnt put these steps in the context of GI TCG because of it being completely different game to hearthstone that Funki Monki used for his examples. So perhaps you could contextualize these steps in terms of GI TCG, that would be really helpful.

I started out trying to do that, but quickly found myself needing to explain each archetype different for each step - which meant the length of the script went up really fast and I didn't think I could do it in under 10 minutes.
This video definitely covered what I think are some of the common elements, and touches on a few of those, but that's a pretty nice framework as an example! Thanks for sharing

I also think refining an existing deck can be under the umbrella of deck building, not to the point of mistake #5 but to an extent where you'll see the performance improving regardless of matchups. Definitely helped how I build decks since then

I don't really build deck, I just copy a deck with 2 or 3 characters I want to play with, play it and gradually change only support cards to match my style, I think trial and error is a good way to improve your own deck, my main deck now is a weird deck with 3 bow users, run magic and a little bit weapon engine with Where's The Unseen Razor/Golden House, I've played it for 3 months and it's so comfortable and fun to the point I don't think of changing my deck, at least for now.
I think building deck is similar to finding your playstyle, it's difficult at the start, but when you have the better grasp of it, it will be much easier.

    • @blepthecat
      @blepthecat  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

That's a good strategy - this is more for people who don't like to copy a deck from the beginning.
Though copying a deck and modifying it is risky since a lot of the competitive decks have very close card synergies and changing it up a bit can have a lot of unintended effects.
Still, if you found a deck you enjoy that's the end goal anyway, so great!

@@gloom9799 No, I mean Beidou + Candace + any char that relies on normal attacks (ofc Beidou can can sweep too, esp with her talent)
Both Beidou and Candace have super high survivability and decent damage unless you're up against say TM or a freeze team where you literally can't deal any damage with your skill
So they can both survive upto round 3 easily so you can actually burst on both pretty easily, esp if your third character is electro (pref Dori for heal or Razor for main carry), because you can use a lot of cheap energy cards in that deck and easily burst both Beidou and Candace on r2 even without Jeht
It's not that hard to play, but you do need to draw like 20 cards by R2 if you want a decent chance to get and proc both Jehts by R3 😂

Nice video! I think it's pretty frustrating how common it is to see new players asking for advice building/tweaking their decks, only to be told to copy a meta choice or abandon a character they want to build around.
As a pretty new player myself I tend to make mistake #3 most often. Especially considering most of my games are just against NPCs (where even the greediest strategies will probably work) it's all too easy to get wrapped into making an extremely demanding setup deck that can be dismantled in an instant by a surprise KO or just bad dice rolls/card draws. Interestingly, a lot of the NPC decks themselves seem to have this problem. They love spending multiple turns loading each character up with weapons, artefacts and food, only for the player to be ready to teamwipe them before they can actually use any of it.

I always thought that, if you want to use weapon cards, it would be best to pick 2 characters that can utilize the same weapon card. Although you do have to be careful which characters to bring and what weapon to choose in order for this technique to be effective
I also built this one noelle deck where every card in the deck is chosen to serve noelle. It was a bad deck, all the cards were useless if they werent being used to support noelle, but when it works, IT WORKS. I was able to:
    1. Take no damage
    2. Deal BIG damage
    3. Heal everyone else at the same time

    • @blepthecat
      @blepthecat  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Two characters sharing a weapon usually isn't enough to be worth including weapons. There's really only a few weapons that are strong enough to be useable, and even then not every deck even needs or wants weapons!

I built a Noelle carry deck a few months ago and it’s my favourite by far, I’m always improving it when there are new cards tho. The characters I use are:
    1. Noelle
    2. Gorou
    3. Raiden
It’s also a Jeht deck, that’s why I use cards like Dunyarzard (idk if I wrote that correctly xD), Liben, that guy with a book in hand that can draw cards (forgot his name, he’s from Liyue), Mamere, Paimon, Seelie and the Sorush card.
The only equipment I use are Gamblers and Wolves Gravestone for Noelle. For sustain I only use Lotus Crisp and Geo Ressonance, since the only character that should survive is Noelle anyways. As my Arcane card I use Fresh Wind of Freedom, but others could work too. And ofc the Geo Woven dices :) There are 3 more card slots left, but I’m not sure what I put there atm… I think I also used I-haven’t-lost-yet? Ohhh and ofc also the Inazuma Ressonance for dice fixing!
On the first round I just try to get up my Raiden burst and draw as many cards as I can if I have Seelie, Mamere or the book guy. If my dice are too bad to use Raidens skill and NA I just try to ramp with Liben or something else. Next round I use my Raiden‘s burst and then either ramp more or switch to Gorou and use his burst. Raiden is completely useless after her burst, so you just need to keep her alive until she bursts. Her summon is great for crystallise so your Noelle gets a bit more damage and surviveability later. Gorou can die too, but sometimes he’s useful to end the game if Noelle somehow died. After the Gorou burst you can either ramp more or I sometimes also try to get up a second burst if I still haven’t gotten enough Jeht stacks/my Jeht cards. When you’re ready just switch to Noelle and finish the game :D
I really enjoy playing this deck (and playing Noelle in general, she’s my favourite TCG card) and it’s also pretty good! The only times I have lost was because I played against aggro decks that just killed my Raiden and Gorou before I could do anything or because I just had very bad luck with my card draws… or when I was playing dumb ofc ;3
Idk if anyone will read this message (it’s quite long xD), but if you do, then you could try out my deck if you want to! Have a nice day everyone :D

I don't have any specific videos talking about it - but I suppose you can see these cards being played in many of my gameplay videos from this and last version.
In general, if you are playing the right cards in your deck, there's no real difference with how you play than normal - you just happen to have a lot more cards in your deck that can generate dice advantage.
"Magic" is a bit of a buzzword to me which is why I haven't made a video specifically about it - plus I didn't expect it to stick around in the meta this long heh. I should definitely have considered it earlier on, but I'm still expecting it to get nerfed so I'm not sure if it'll be worth making a video (same thing happened with Itto lol)

Haha I'm no expert either - most decks I play are copied from top tournaments as well. But you always have to start somewhere!

I still don't understand why people bring 2 talent cards ngl, you could have better action cards instead, I just bring a lot of card draw to p much guarantee to get them within round 3 anyways, the only problem is not overdrawing by accident and burning cards

    • @blepthecat
      @blepthecat  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Usually aggro/combo decks will run 2 talents because it's important to maximize drawing them Round 1.
Stall decks you'll find mostly playing 1 talent because they use those as finishers or for value.

@@blepthecat I run only 1 in my aggro decks too, it's not too big a deal because it's a 37% chance to to draw your talent in the first 10 cards (starting hand) even with just one talent (yes I actually calculated just now because I can), and double talent is still just a 61% chance, which isn't so much higher to be worth putting two in imo but ig it's good if you don't really want other cards
Double Stormterror seems like a more reliable way of fishing for talents than double talents imo, esp if you want a talent you didn't already get, getting dupes from Stormterror is a huge waste esp when you could slot in a card draw instead of the dupe talent (We have what, Liben, Chang, Seelie, Silver and Melus, Strategize, Flowing Rings/Echoes, Vourukasha/Khavrena, Veteran's Visage, Weeping Willow, Liyue Harbor, Lumenstone... that's like 26 cards right there, even if you don't include the weird 2 cost 4 card drawing card and Pankration which are kinda hard to control
And Stormterror is technically a card draw too since it thins your deck, so that's 28 cards right there, no shortage of card draw)
and even if you don't run a 4/5 cost skill on your team, Stormterror is still great to sacrifice for Sunyata even if you can't use it all three times, I consider it a more directed Strategize since it costs two to get you one card that can be used at a one dice discount
So yeah, not a huge fan of double talent, it doesn't actually double your chances of getting the talent, it's more like a 1.5x chance

@@justapasserbyrandomperson9325 yep you do get diminishing returns, but in the end it all depends on which character's talent and how important it is to draw early. Duplicates are less bad because you can always tune so it's not a completely dead card. There's no real way to generalize whether you should run one or two

Well, these are just the 5 most common ones - there's plenty more, and after you deal with those you still need to be able to evaluate cards well to know which specific cards to play. There's a reason I said deckbuilding is hard!

@@Iris_0_8 you'll have to be more specific with which part exactly. If you are struggling a lot with deckbuilding, the best thing is to just start playing with existing list until you are more familiar with mechanics and cards. Then you will be able to applt these better
