Hearing from an engineer familiar with the Mazda transmission, it’s a conventional transmission with an internal clutch pack serving as the “wet clutch”. He claims this possibly limits the ability to launch from a standstill, and also makes it incredibly complex to modulate as it’s acting as a torque converter at a standstill, needing to prevent rollback but also engage on demand. Hopefully it was engineered for reliability…
Well, it's been the same transmission style in the Mazda 6-speed for years. And they have been decently reliable. Hopefully the new 8-speed is the same.
AFAIK it uses the mild hybrid electric motor to launch and then handoff to the clutch. There is no torque converter so it cant move the vehicle from a standstill without the electric motor.
@@thomasbezak1090 sounds like a better more reliable system then since the electric motor will take the most pressure by initiating movement from standstill. This should be standard imo

Mazda wins, no question. Way more power and better fuel economy. Much better driving dynamics. Fantastic front row / cabin. The "Calligraphy" trim of the Palisade is expensive (very close in price to the CX90), and now it looks so basic, so if you pay almost the same, why accept less?
I don't want bold and aggressive. The Mazda looks so fine and elegant, it looks like an early-mid 2000s car with subtle refinements. What a great design inside and out!
6:48 In Hyundais you can just lock the doors at any point. As long as you have the smartkey with you, the trunk will still open, and then when you close it it'll be locked again.
Exactly this. 90% if people here might want the CX-90 for its I6, RWD, turbo, including myself. But we are such a small percentage (less than 5%) of new car buyers. Most would prefer the Palisade for its extra few features, and especially space/carrying capacity.
@@zogadwoe As a single man, I go with the CX-90 for driving performance. If I have a family, I will go with the Palisade. Preferably the Caligraphy trim.
I noticed Mazdas are always smaller than the competition and not as comfortable... They look good, and seems like the interior is more designed for looks rather than comfort.... I noticed the same theme for almost all the Mazda cars...
I'd rather have the mazda, too, for the driving experience. But the Hyundai isn't too bad! I've had a 2016 maxcruz and put over 200k miles on it. the only caveat, tho is you can't drive for 20 hours continuously on a hot day. I live in saudi arabia so it reaches 50c over here.
Saw a lot of people here trying to decide between the telluride, Highlander and the CX-90. It’s simple, if interior space is your priority, CX-90 would lose every time, as it was never designed to be a minivan alternative. But if you care about design, craftsmanship, driving dynamics, and how all of them come together as a whole, it would literally be an insult to even compare the CX-90 to the highlander, telluride, or even the MDX. Nobody in their right mind, given they know at least a little bit about cars, would compare a RWD inline-6 turbo setup to a bunch of FWD turbo 4 and V6 cars and ask which is better - they are not even in the same league. Can’t believe we are still having this conversation…
Absolutely agree with what you said. I am looking for an optional 3rd vehicle. Yes, 3rd row is a little tight, but for me with a family of 4, it will be optional and only used rare cases. When it comes looks, styling, interior, I am in love with CX 90. I did check Palisade, New Pilot and the interior quality does not match. I am looking to buy CX90 Premium Plus in artesian red. I own 2015 CX5 and no issues so far with Mazda.
I don't understand why Mazda can't manage to build a car that both drives well and is class competitive in practicality. Its as if they want to stay a sales also-ran.
For me, the sweet spot in the CX-90 line up is going to be the 280 HP engine in the Premium Plus trim level. It’s down a little bit on horsepower than the high output 6 and is missing a couple of little luxury features like the power steering wheel or rear ventilated seats, but it does check off all the other boxes … panoroof, front ventilated seats, and bonus, it seats three (kids) in the third row, so it has slightly more seating capacity. For nearly $10,000 less than its high output counterpart, it will retain the awesome handling.
Nice making such an wonderful video I am pleased. That car is expensive but I can show you how to afford the money to purchase that car within two months. Ask me how it works if you're interested
@@platano4924 Well to be precise I don't take bmw or Mercedes at all, just saying hypothetically I would take a "lesser model" of them over the high end Mazda or Hyundai.
Last year drove Hyundai Kona with Lane Keep Assist. It was the best lane keeper I've ever drove: it keeps the best trajectory on any speed and do it very comfortable. The second place I give to Opel Grandland. Interesting is it the same over all cars in Hyundai.
I think all these reviews are sleeping on the lower trim CX-90s. Mazda always has really good value options, and the trim levels always feel very fairly equipped. The inline six really helps with the premium feeling, not sure it really matters if it has more HP or not. 280hp in base trim is more than adequate. Whatever the first trim that unlocks the bigger rims is probably the sweet spot.
Palisade/Telluride definitely are still the value king in its segment. However, I prefer the Mazda chassis, powertrain and over quality/refinement for an extra $10k if I was to keep it for 6+ years.
The Mazda has the Turbo 6 available in a medium level trim that is cheaper than this palasade. This comparison didnt actually compare apples to apples. Need more info, but both are nice.
Also you don’t need a top trim. You can get the lower HP i6 with most of the features in this car for around 50k which is the same as the loaded Pallisade before markup.
@@tmarriotti You don't think the Mazda is going to have a huge markup? They'll be in limited supply...you figure out the math. You didn't think you comment through. Also, not all Hyundai/Kia dealerships have huge markups. Do better than this.

Yuri, I totally get what you mean about the eco system. I have a 2016 CX-5 and ordered a 2023 CX-5 and love the rotary dial life. I have elantras and Corollas at work and I hate using that touch screen, especially when I’m on a bumpy road, my finger keeps moving when I want to select stuff. Plus no finger prints if I don’t use the touch screen. Side Note: I asked on Twitter to confirm the apple car play touch screen working while driving and I appreciate that you guys snuck it into this video. My 2016 CX5 has no CarPlay so couldn’t test it myself.
Mazda owner here...similar with Yuri with the CX-5 and it's not bad...but noticing squeaks and rattles now, but the biggest letdown is the infotainment. The dealership experience was not great either (just switched Mazda dealerships). I think the CX-90 is decent looking (except for the headlights which are not wide enough) and nice interior. But at $63k, would rather fork over more and go for a Lexus / Acura or Genesis. Both great cars, but at $53k range, I would probably go Palisade / Telluride
I rented a cx5 in 2022 while I was waited for my Mazda 3 to come in from Japan. As to infotainment the new one is light years ahead of the old. It’s very enjoyable. As to the squeaks and such, Mazda pretty much fixed this after 3 years of the car being out for the 3. So there might be some growing pain for the new cars too. That or they’ve fixed whatever issues were going around brand wide
I totally agree with everything mazda. It is something you just need to experience it. Once you have a mazda you won’t like anything else. It is just better.
I prefer bmw’s driving experience. But when you compare cost to buy and reliability, it surely looks like Mazda is a total winner. I drove the 90 yesterday and couldn’t get over how well it handles accelerates and steers. The fit and finish while not German is still remarkable for an Asian reliable car. I’m trying to negotiate a purchase of the cx70 this week.
@TheStraightPipes you need to get that CX-90 over to Tuxmat so they can laser scan it.😊 I recently cancelled my order for a 2023 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy and now have a 2024 CX-90 Signature on order. As an enthusiast FR with an inline 6 and that beautiful interior are hard to pass up.
The Palisade for sure is a nice rig and offers good value, but the CX-90 is absolutely worth the extra $$. The Mazda is soooooooo much better looking inside and out, faster and handles much more competently. We picked up a new Acura MDX A-Spec in the last year and if the CX-90 was available at the time, we almost certainly would have went that route.
I'm waiting for the reveal of the coming CX-70 (2-row) version of this. Hoping it will be offered with that 3.0L Skyactive 280hp. Will be perfect for me.
The cx90 with the grey two tone interior looks insane. Very minimalist with a nice german looking exterior. If I was into suvs I would consider the cx90.

I think I’m this segment, having a FWD layout might be the better option. They are more space efficient and most parents that are buying this don’t really care for what engine their vehicle has or anything. That being said, I can’t wait to see what other vehicles come on this Mazda platform
Transverse engine and automatic transaxels have a well known history to be garbage especially the later ones used in kias/hyundais having so many issues. Components have to be far more compact to fit under the front hood compared to a conventional longitudinal engine and transmission layout that they can make alot larger and stronger.
@@TheRandomActivity Wrong. Longitudinal engine and transmission needs to be compact than a transverse engine because it takes a lot of space in the hood (you need longer hood length), longer wheelbase, and a hump in the cabin to accomodate a driveshaft, which reduce cabin capacity. And all of that makes the chassis heavier than a fwd. Meanwhile, transverse fwd engine takes less space because the engine and transmission is only located in the front and provide more space in the cabin. Honda and toyota have been making fwd cars for a long time and it's known for their reliability. I don't want to talk about bmw, merc, and other euro cars about reliability lol
Well, if you really need to transport 5 passengers regularly, a minivan would be infinitely better than either. That's where you really get space efficiency
You're missing the $10k dealer markup on the Hyundai that we're seeing in the States. Wife got a CX 90 PHEV over the Palisade Calligraphy because after dealer mark-ups the prices were within $1,000 of each other. She's absolutely loved her CX-90.
Hyundai has been really good during this decade, although I have been really annoyed by the "Wahs" of the commercials, especially when I'm watching hockey
I would love to see mention of auto-dimming exterior side mirrors. It's a feature so many automakers overlook but it is a necessity for me personally and I would love to know which models have it.
Oof that’s a good one ! How do you locate cars with that? Do you just default to buying more high end expensive cars because they often have them and you don’t have to think, or do you find the mainstream cars with them?
@@Natethegreat200c I have astigmatism so dimming side mirrors were a must-have when I was car shopping. Virtually no economy cars have them besides the odd VW or Nissan (and even then, you might need to import parts from overseas). It's generally limited to premium/luxury brands. Genesis includes it on most trims, so I went for a used 2015 sedan. And Mercedes only includes it on the driver side for some reason.
I'm just going to have to say it. Mazda is the best overall car company there is. No other company combines great style and driving dynamics WITH reliability as well as they do. Lexus may be right there with them, but Mazda's on top in my opinion.
Commenting before even watching the whole video: this is a test I needed to see although I would have liked to see the non Turbo S version as it's similar priced and more apples to apples.

Agreed! I’m just concerned they will go to American and try to make it wider than the European version. One thing I love about my CX-5 is the size. Fingers crossed
The good thing about the Mazda's infotainment is that the screen is at a good distance where your eyes don't have to adjust as much when glancing back and forth from the road to it. Also, the dial is right where your arm will naturally lay, so you can comfortably use it without having you hold your arm up trying to touch the screen while going over bumps and stuff.

I just priced a CX-90 with every option and it stickers for $68K. Cmon man - I can get nicely equipped Audi Q7 cheaper than that! Mazda has lost their minds.
Interesting I think the mazda is better way better. The coming cx-70 with that 3.3T inline 6 is going to be an rdx slayer and a gv-70 competitor for $7k -$10k cheaper than both.
100% the Mazda and I’ve never owned either of the brands. I can’t get past the front on the Kia/Hyundai where the headlights are placed awkwardly in the bumper. It’s like the headlights were just randomly placed with no style effort put into it.
Why is everyone so upset about the Mazda touch screen situation? I think the rotary control knob is easy to use and much less distractive. And the Mazda feels clunky because of the transmission. The electric motor is actually driving the car forward briefly before the clutch engages to the engine.
I understand you get the vehicles the car companies give you but you could just compare the entry inline 6 Turbo Premium Plus with the Palisade for an Apples to Apples comparison. The entry inline 6 is 280 HP and 319 tq and has all the same driving dynamics, it’s just less boost.
13:35 the Mazda DOES have a towing mode but its hidden until you hook up to something with the trailer hitch and the electronic connections that you would have installed with your hitch. Its the same for my CX-50. No need to display the option when you are not towing anything.

A car that just copied the design of another company. A Hyundai car without commitment and pride is worthless.
Mazda is a huge step up from the Hyundai in terms of brand and appeal. Worth it for that alone
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Exactly, this comparison is a crime.
100% No matter how good the candy wrapper is, Hyundai (and KIA, for that matter) are still no match to Japs... especially engineering-wise
@@spilot1016 Maybe for ICE vehicles...but for EVs, Koreans have the edge in 2023. Whether that continues in the future, we'll see but it's been an absolute disaster for Toyota / Subaru EVs from the get go.. I've driven primarily Japanese vehicles, but my next SUV will probably be a Genesis EV..
I'm a Mazda SUV owner and disagree with this. Mazda is not all that desirable and they're going to get stomped on by Lexus / Acura and likely even Genesis. $63k for a Mazda SUV is going to be a tough proposition for many. As an entusiast, there's no way I would ever trade my CX-5 for the CX-90, even though I could afford to do so. $50k-ish is a sweet spot and above this, I'm going with lux name plates. Pretty sure most would follow suit. More than anything, the wonky hybrid powertrain is a deal breaker, fuel efficiency be damned..
Being a cx5 and Mazda 3 owner I couldn’t relate to Jacob’s complaints at all 😂 except the third row room. I was expected a solo review of the cx90 tho 😮
Mazda brand image is so much better than Hyundai, even Hyundai's newest cars didn't have any logo on the steering wheel because apparently they want the interior to feel upscaled but the Hyundai logo just didn't cut it.
They didn’t want to fool you cheaply though, like calling their CVT transmission with IVT. 😂
The Hyundai logo their using in their electric cars is 4 dots which is Morse code I believe for H
I bought my Palisade to be a road trip machine and it excels in that. Very comfortable and lots of space. Not perfect, but worth the $.
What year? And reliability issues?
When you say not perfect, what do you find it lacking in that would make it perfect for you?
@@xxk4rilsxx ten year warranties same with telluride. I've owned mazda's and they always broke in four years and had no warranties 😂.
One reason why I want a Telluride. Want to take my family on lots of road trips.
@@scoopaway9176 mazda is basically an entirely new company after 2014. QC has gone way up on their cars, and good luck getting your warranty honored lmao
This system should be more reliable but uses the electric motor to smooth it operation. Like Mercedes they have similar gearbox now
@@thomasbezak1090 sounds like a better more reliable system then since the electric motor will take the most pressure by initiating movement from standstill. This should be standard imo
isnt that the same style they used for the 6 speed? my 2021 mazda 3 has 140k yes it sucks from a standstill, but its been flawless so far. most of the driving is city driving to. unlimited KM powertrain warranty for 5 years.
I'm team rotary knob. I recently bought a CX-5 and wasn't sure how I'd feel about it, but after just a month I can do pretty much everything without looking by counting clicks!
In another review vid I learned there’s a deep menu setting that enables touch screen.
same, they are amazing to use😊
same i know what and where every click will take me and with seconds i can get where i want do what i want and then enjoy the ride im rotary clicker ALL DAY skrew the touch skreen that was increfibly annoying to be honest
I had a CX-5…There’s definitely a learning curve to the Mazda infotainment system….but once you figure it out, it’s pretty intuitive.
Pallisade is FWD while the CX90 is a RWD with a 6 in line, that compromise the interior, also the propeller shaft and diff in the rear
If i was the driver, I take the CX-90. If i was a passenger, Palisade hands down for more room and comfort!
Exactly this. 90% if people here might want the CX-90 for its I6, RWD, turbo, including myself. But we are such a small percentage (less than 5%) of new car buyers. Most would prefer the Palisade for its extra few features, and especially space/carrying capacity.
Good opinion. I bet most people would agree with this if they are driving enthusiasts
But the driver buys the vehicle 😉
@@aaronj5573 and the passengers help you keep it 😅 especially if you have a partner and kids 😊
I have a Mazda. It interior is lacking compared to other brands but I LOVE the way it drives. Very sporty! I’ll stick with Mazda for that reason.
I rather the Mazda .. luxurious & will last way longer than that Hyundai
WAY LONGER.
This. It’s either buy a car so your family can have a party in the back OR by a masterpiece
Je suis tout à fait d’accord avec vous
But let's let the new MDX turbo compete. Relax
280HP is so little. I need at least 500HP.
@@littledovecitydustbro what???
Kudos to the reviewer for this detailed comparison! It's refreshing to see two strong contenders in the SUV market. 👍👍
Mazda is killing it, gutdamn! Can't wait to see what they'll do for the next gen mx5 😍
Hopefully put the straight 6 with turbo in. 😅
Nice making such an wonderful video I am pleased. That car is expensive but I can show you how to afford the money to purchase that car within two months. Ask me how it works if you're interested
It's also kind of crazy how the $70k Mazda is considered "affordable" these days. Anxious to see what the EV9 is like in the real world.
60k at Mercedes and bmw gets you two sizes smaller, base version with a lot of tech missing.
@@hamburglar83I would still take them over Mazda or Hyundai.
@@BrianKenney-wc4qd🤣 you take a bmw or Mercedes over a Mazda.. are you perhaps leasing not buying, right?
Whatever the first trim that unlocks the bigger rims is probably the sweet spot.
agreed but at the price point Im wanting ventilated seats
Palisade/Telluride definitely are still the value king in its segment. However, I prefer the Mazda chassis, powertrain and over quality/refinement for an extra $10k if I was to keep it for 6+ years.
Except most dealers all have huge markups on Telluride/Palisade so they are basically even
The Mazda has the Turbo 6 available in a medium level trim that is cheaper than this palasade. This comparison didnt actually compare apples to apples. Need more info, but both are nice.
Also you don’t need a top trim. You can get the lower HP i6 with most of the features in this car for around 50k which is the same as the loaded Pallisade before markup.
Indeed.
Historically, the Mazda will run forever.
The Hyundai will be used up @ 120k.
@@tmarriotti You don't think the Mazda is going to have a huge markup? They'll be in limited supply...you figure out the math. You didn't think you comment through. Also, not all Hyundai/Kia dealerships have huge markups. Do better than this.
The power matters when you add more passengers. The vehicle performance is weighed down by additional weight and the vehicle will perform sluggishly if it doesn't have ample power.
I use the camera feature for the mirrors all the time as an owner of 2 cars with it. Especially late at night
I think it speaks to Mazda's design ethos that even its largest SUV offering is still fun to drive! I'd love to get one of my own
Yuri, I totally get what you mean about the eco system.
14:43 that screenshot edit had me spill my coffee 🤣 10/10 I love you guys

The Palisade for sure is a nice rig and offers good value, but the CX-90 is absolutely worth the extra $$. The Mazda is soooooooo much better looking inside and out, faster and handles much more competently. We picked up a new Acura MDX A-Spec in the last year and if the CX-90 was available at the time, we almost certainly would have went that route.
that cx90 looks so much better in and out

@@PaulHojdaTrue if you’re transporting 6 regularly. For 5 a minivan is overkill, and excruciatingly boring overkill at that.

Palisade has it, but you'll have to option up to Limited/Calligraphy I believe.
My 2009 mazda6 has auto-dimming exterior and interior mirrors. Not sure if Mazda still offers that. It requires a light sensor in the center mirror.
I'd bet the 90 has it. My 16' mazda6 has them. I'd be shocked if they omitted that feature on their most premium product ever.

Mazda any day, for interior and exterior! Best SUV we ever had.
The screen shot gag was gold I actually was thinking my phone took one
I wish ya put this up against the Pilot Elite. But still good review. Thanks for the content!
Why? the Pilot is a joke and sorely outclassed by anything in this class.
Why is everyone so upset about the Mazda touch screen situation? I think the rotary control knob is easy to use and much less distractive.
And the Mazda feels clunky because of the transmission. The electric motor is actually driving the car forward briefly before the clutch engages to the engine.
Mazda looks So Stunning 😍✨
I will take a comfortable ride over a sporty ride any day.
I like the Palisades tech. Mazda seems outdated inside and outdate tech.
Mazda all day long. 2020 Palisades and Tellurides now showing up in the used off-lease market and they are exactly what you'd expect to see in a three year old Hyundai or Kia.
