    Darkhorse Duo comments:
    1. There may never be another chance like this. Bret's proposal is so sound and elegant from a Game Theoretical perspective that it has legs....steal the majority in the middle back from the lunacy on the far left and Trump, who has some ardent supporters, but won on his best quality of being Not Hillary. Also, I think Michael Moore phrased it best by saying Trump was a Molotov cocktail lobbed at a system by people who had been locked out of it.
    2. MONEY - This will need serious money. Some very deep-pocketed individuals will need to be in support or it will be DOA. Can such people be convinced that A) the danger of utter collapse of the Republic is real and B) it has a chance of working. Peter Thiel could probably be brought on board by Eric. Could Mark Cuban possibly be recruited?
    3. Staffing - This needs all the pieces of a full-on presidential campaign without the party machinery. How to find the right balance of experience without the party hackery of the politically experienced. Also, I love the coldly analytical style of Bret and Heather, but there will need to be all types involved: ra-ra types, door-to-door sales types, mudslinging types, cloak-and-dagger types, etc.
    4. This will probably be ignored by the DNC and Team Trump until it gains significant momentum, then they will attack it with everything they got. Attacks must be anticipated and responses laid out in advance. Trump is a master at political manipulation and the DNC not only has the vast financial resources and legions of experienced political operators, but also the allegiance of most major media outlets. These cannot be underestimated.
    5. Authenticity - I think there is a huge opportunity for this movement to be authentic, in fact I think there is a massive thirst for a little. We don't have every answer, but we know how to have a conversation and we know the right questions. I think of the ad campaign that rescued Dominoes Pizza...it was authentic and highlighted the companies imperfections. People are starved for this kind of genuine honesty.

Hi, I was intrigued and somewhat alarmed at Mr. Weinstein and Mr. McWhorter's observation of the riot's and how it appears that BLM,ANTIFA, and other groups have morphed into something resembling Maoism. I attempted to tell a liberal friend of mine about this and he accused me of trying to start a fight. I am still bewildered how talking about the observations of 2 professors would cause my friend to think I am trying to start a fight. In conclusion I agree, if this movement is not confronted soon we will be in a civil war.

    • @lukedavis6711
      @lukedavis6711 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It's not a confrontation we need. The only examples I can think of of the spirit of abstraction being stopped is characters like MLK; how did he stop the spirit of abstraction? He understood human nature, brought people together, and gave them the tools they needed to put an end to the cycle of dehumanizing. We need someone to explain to us the real problem and help us combat the dehumanization that antiracists are committing.

My skepticism about the civil war concern is where would the physical battlefield be? It seems feasible if major cities were comprised of 50/50 Right- and Left-wing populations. But they aren't, the two requisite sides exist in very distant spaces, rural versus metropolitan.

48:40 - the hypothesis that lower school funding in selected urban areas is the cause of lower black achievement seems to be challenged by at least four things. 1. low school funding and opportunity in rural areas 2. lower funding and opportunity in homeschooling 3. how asians perform in the same urban area schools. and 4. the increased (inflation adjusted) US school funding over the last 5 decades with decreasing or static performance on standardized tests. All 4 factors challenge the hypothesis that low funding is a primary cause of low achievement and increasing funding will therefore cause higher achievement.

The crowd applauded, maybe with somewhat less enthusiasm than for earlier points. The speaker then scolded the crowd again, declaring that of course none of them would really do it. (I suspect some actually would, but probably not many.)
Now, for all I know, Robin DiAngelo does live on $45,000 per annum and give (or rather "give back") anything more. I suspect, however, she does not. What if the Movement decides that it's racist NOT to do that? What if it decides real "Allies" will sign over their paychecks to BLM/Antifa , and live on an amount to be determined by the Movement? University Profs should not quit *prematurely* unless they face some time sensitive opportunity that requires it.
    .
Do what you can to obviate the brazen foolishness.
    .
*TAKE A STAND* like this: "I commit to the proposition that it is never harmful to anyone to *ask a question*. I reserve the freedom to *ask any question*. I will support anyone who is attacked merely for *asking a question*. And I will oppose anyone who attempts to restrict the freedom of anybody to *ask a question*.
    .
I would post this on my office door. I would post it on my webpage. I would hand it to all my students. And I would become Socratic in my public voice. If there is any claim I would like to make, but which could give my enemy a hold, I would instead *ask a question*. If I were to publish papers, I would frame sensitive materials *explicitly* in the form of *asking questions*. And if the enemies descend, I will point to what I have posted (and I hope have become known for) about the freedom of asking questions.
    .
I may be cancelled, but in the process I will try to *force my opponents* into framing their objections as objections against *the freedom to ask questions* -- i.e. to force them to the most unpalatable defence, a defence that makes them look as bad as I can possibly make them in the eyes of the public.
    .
Then, having been cancelled, I can say that I fought the good fight.
    .
NOTE: My posted 'stand' might not be the best formulation of anything, but 'you are not allowed to ask certain questions!' is not a position easily sold to the non-deranged. In other words, if they attack you, force them to bare their fangs in a way that others can see.

He really appears to be a political grifter... Like a true grifter, not the meme/slander/ad hom that gets tossed at ideological opponents like a frisbee, and I don't say this with any malice towards him or his audience, just that he's about as anti-intellectual and "wonk-for-pay" as anyone I've ever seen. Can relate to personal filter and paradigm fixation when it comes to hysteria over being left out ... it has some parallels though possibly not the same extremes as the current movement. Was a social work intern with a welfare office for 6 months and gravitated immediately to a small crew that was constantly hatching revolution regarding workplace prejudice and their trials in trying to compete professionally. After a few weeks, the anger became contagious in a manner I couldn't understand logically as I had nothing racially in common (being white) with any of this group. Quite surprisingly I started to become hugely affected by this filter and perspective in ways I couldn't source at all. I started re-interpreting simple social encounters in the narrative I had been listening to for the previous few weeks to the extent that in no time I was seeing obstacles everywhere and that this narrative somehow applied to me, strangely enough. In a few days viewing the world through this lens, I was paralyzed and withdrew to my desk in a fuming mass, limiting my communication with everyone lest another simple social or professional encounter feed this beast anymore. I think it may have started as an empathetic mechanism, a real deep effort to understand that somehow internalized unwittingly and morphed into something else. (this would be an interesting area of study) I come from a recovery background, am a member of a recovery organization that has some vocal critics in the media and thought this might be extending in this environment and I had not been seeing it for decades. I encounter it rarely in my travels, perhaps 10-20 times a year where people indirectly infer that addiction is a moral issue and that the recovery model is a sham for weaklings and sour grapes. I know intuitively that this is not the case and it has never really raised my ire much in that last 15 years. Part of my recovery instruction is to listen to any viewpoint and to honestly dismiss or take it on it's value in every case. Older members might counter, "maybe you do have sour grapes of some sort... ever think of that? " I spent years sorting whether this viewpoint had any merit and decided that it was largely based on ignorance and to not waste my time on individuals or institutions who might think differently. If I was to be an effective ambassador of a truly serious issue, I could not stumble into unvetted personally motivated grievances lest I fall into a destructive bias. Like many in the current movement, I had as much or more support, given plenty of objective consideration in the press (though not seeking it) and lots of enclaves where I could thrive.. and that it is of no value to engage fools in arguments as you will lose in some fashion regardless. Medicine and the law were on my side and that's all I really needed in the end... could make my way quite well despite a significant vocal cohort telling me I was bitter, weak and some kind of born again religious nutcase. By not wearing this on my lapel and scaring people into compliance with personal anger on the issue, I could be the most effective amabassador and dismantler of damaging stereoptypes and archetypes. It comes up regularly in my inner circle, even after 20 years, but in the form of eggshell paternalism at times, if I'm feeling OK and to hang in buddy. Was a bit annoying at first but that is an entirely inappropriate response, anger and accusation, to someone doing their best and who does not know any better, but is trying and who may still hold the same beliefs after our encounter. I was instructed that this kind of response was not ethical or defensible and could often be founded on ego, self serving interpretations and usually ended badly with all parties being the more ignorant for engaging. This organization considered the political angle, through a century of trial and error, was too full of mines and egos to ever ultimately serve it's social goal, political groups relying on funds and regularly amended their stances based on funding and political alliances, and they abandoned it 80 years ago citing the experience of other organizations. Not too mention, indiscriminantly deputizing all sorts of personalities to go out in the streets and unleash their individual interpretation of a thoughtful, hard won vision. 20 years after this, they had an impeccable reputation, were welcomed by the courts as allies (though being seen as a total nuisance only 20 years before, regularly being beaten by cops and the public in general, not to mentioned a complete ostracism that would make today's oppressions seem mild) , were honored by the President and given numerous medical and social awards for their efficacy in restoring a once hated group into full and unquestioned standing in society through simply avoiding the political arena and working diligently on the single issue at hand without outside funds, political endorsement or publicity. It was also the first organization not to bar or ban anybody based on their orientation, race, political belief or appearance (this was in the 1930's) as they understood more than anyone that exclusion, even in other arenas, could literally mean the death of an individual .

Interesting. The 'blank slate' that allows people to be highly up-gradable, and presumably able to outperform another less upgraded competitor feels like a "nature" trait which allows "nurture" to have a more significant impact. In a way it moves selection more into a group competition instead of an individual competition. Someone with a robust "family" network supporting them should be more successful, and desirable both because they have better "upgrades" and the "family" support system which you would want your offspring to be raised by.
Although the down side seems to be that the lack of a undeveloped initial state leads people into preserving "upgrades" which are considered to be core tenets of their personality despite their efficacy.

At the very end, you guys were riffing off the last question of branding. You mentioned IDW, RebelWisdom, Upcoming Hall/Schmact/Wheal Podcast, and the GameB/Emancipation Party.
Your enlightened, first principles, good-faith "conversation" within the IDW, for example, is the local model of the "national/state" model that I am putting forward below. No participant is trying to defraud anyone into changing their position. No participant is trying to force another to their position via social aggression and boycotting. The only way you win is by actually honestly changing the mind of the other through civil discourse and relational proximity.
In my opinion, there seems to me to be an impulse underlying the last question and the response to "scale up"..... (in the question: branding in order to accumulate numbers to fight the baddies who have numbers). This strategy is inherent to Progressivism in our Political System. Progress being your group's goals realized population-wide. In the current ideological scene, "Conservatives" have certain goals and "Liberals" have certain other goals. They both want to seize power and ram through their program to achieve their goals - achieving their version of progress by forcing everyone using the police power of the state.
I think this is problematic for two reasons:
    1) There is a difference between each groups' stated goals and the actual goals of the leadership. Scale creates this problem in any kind of organization. Once some org is powerful enough to actually affect change, it is already corrupt. The leadership is remote enough from the populace they are leading (due to group size) and can thus use the org to their benefit with impunity. Like moths to the light, the people susceptible to the corrupting effects of this trap inevitably gravitate to it.
    2) There is also a natural bureaucratic quagmire effect immediately below the leadership level in orgs beyond a certain scale. The org inevitably eventually effectively is an impediment to its stated goals and its desired outcomes (schools beyond a certain scale make kids dumber, medical care beyond a certain scale makes people sicker, the cities wasting the most time in traffic have the most/biggest roads, etc..)
This is why I think what is needed is something that is NOT a branded ideological group with stated goals that gets big enough to fight the other bigs and impose its will, but rather we need a container that has as its basis no ideology but a principle of non-aggression. That way all the ideologies could cooperate and compete with each other fairly within the container. So no one could use the power to force others to their goals. Everyone participating with one ideological group or another would do so voluntarily. The only overarching rules would be the Lowest Common Denominators of (no murder/rape/assault/fraud/theft) - in other words a non-aggression principle.
This is what "the IDW-type conversation" looks like at scale. It is not a political party, a corporation, or even a non-profit. It is a principle. A movement that has a principle rather than an ideology at its center and a decentralized, viral-like organizational structure rather than a hierarchical structure could compete with the bigs. If we stop wasting time, talent, and treasure investing in the bigs, we could have the freedom to all attempt to reach our goals in a fair marketplace of ideas. Those that won in reality would eventually be adopted by others - voluntarily. And if the container is maintained, folks could defect from that winner in the future if reality changes.
    END RANT :-)

about defeating the duopoly, would changing the voting mechanism to something better than first past the post be something doable before hand or would it have to come after wining with the duo?

My guess is they like mcraven because he wanted to overthrow Trump. These are not people who respect voters. They view them as ignorant rubes. I just went to work the day after Obama was elected. And I knew it would be a disaster cuz I did a ton of research on him when he announced in the primary. But since I do adulting I just went to work.

Amen. No McRaven. (Military brat here.) Love these folks, but their ignorance of this community (as with all progressives) is disturbing. Crenshaw 😁 -- we'll talk about red flag laws (also background in mental health).

@@tuck-brainwks-eutent-hidva1098 You hit it. Their total ignorance of the military in every capacity is amazing. It is like a giant blind spot that they can just ignore. Astounding.

@@Marriedrebels It really is. At least they lack the open sneering distrspect that most folks of their "deeply progressive" (as Bret calls it) stripe seem to have 😉. Many thanks for your service....🇺🇸🙏🕯
